Very few EDAs canceled for the rescheduled concert and there were easily enough previous invitees (who canceled for this past Monday, but can now make it) to take those new cancellation spots. No more invitations will be going out and the EDA guest list is now officially closed. I'll keep the JewelConcert@aol.com account open until 9 AM (East Coast time) tomorrow morning, at which time it will again be terminated. I'll be leaving for Nashville myself and no further changes will be made as of that time. There is now only one reason why anyone will be writing the JewelConcert@aol.com account, and that reason is: If you are on the guest list and still need to change your guest, you must let us know by tonight (Thursday). We need an accurate count of people and must know all invitees AND their guest's names BEFORE we leave for Nashville tomorrow . Additional changes will not be possible after that. Most invitees have had plenty of time to decide on a guest, so it shouldn't be a problem. Only people whose names are on the guest list will be permitted to enter the venue, so please make any last minute guest changes today or they will not get in and you'll have to attend without a guest. This probably only applies to a few people at best and possibly applies to no-one, so things are otherwise finalized at this point. It's been quite the workout over the past two weeks! Thank you to everyone who followed instructions in a timely manner. It's appreciated. I look forward to meeting many more of you in Nashville. The EDA guest list is finalized and everyone who was invited has the info they need. Jewel is feeling much better and looking forward to Sunday night. Every invitee should already be perfectly clear on these things, as they were addressed in the invitations and previous posts, but a few helpful reminders: This concert is being professionally filmed and recorded for possible later release, so you must leave all cameras and recording devices outside the venue. If you are bringing these items for your travel use, make arrangements to store them elsewhere during the concert. You will not be allowed in if you are carrying these items on you, so leave them in your car, another EDA's car, hotel or whatever you feel best. Trying to sneak them in can result in you being asked to leave, so please relax on this issue and simply enjoy the music and great company. As far as photo ops after the concert go, nothing like that is planned and should not be expected. Those kinds of opportunities are rarely ever planned and only happen when everyone, including Jewel, is feeling comfortable. So lets just see how it goes. Primarily, I want to re-remind all invitees and their guests, DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR ID OR DRIVERS LICENSE! You will not be able to enter the venue unless your ID matches a name on the guest list. We certainly don't want anyone left out because they forgot, so please remember to bring an ID. Looking forward to meeting a lot more EDAs at this event. Come up and say hi! I'm that guy with a big nose and beard wandering around looking like I just woke up. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey yall, Back by popular demand... The Nashville Gathering Plans! The basics: DATE: 8/5 TIME: 2pm CDT PLACE: Riverfront Park Directions: Riverfront Park is located DIRECTLY in the heart of downtown. If you drive to the end Broadway Blvd., you are there. There will be some rather large steps there, near the Riverfront Stage. We'll be hanging out there. I'll be in my BRIGHT YELLOW hat [as I might be taking it out of retirement for this special event]. We might even have the oh-so-traditional BLUE EDA balloons. I honestly don't think you'll miss us. From wherever you're staying, just head downtown. Parking: Unfortunately, parking in Nashville is very bad. There is a VERY small area for free parking, if you can find it. It's located on Gay St. It's a street located RIGHT along the river. Go to the end of Broadway and take a left, go past Fort Nashboro and hang right, that's Gay St. There are many paid parking lots around the area also, that range from $5-$10. (The parking garage by Kinko's is $5, I know that.) The Plan: As everyone arrives, we'll do the meet and greet. It's basic EDA protocol. We all sit/stand/dance around talking/hugging/(as of lately)fighting. Since we are downtown, there are 8 billion restaurants. (Eating is about the only thing to do in Nashville if you don't enjoy Country Music.) Those who would like to pick up a quick bite to eat, can go to these eateries which range from all price ranges. If you don't feel like eating feel free to go over to the Country Music Hall of Fame, if that's your bag. There are lots of little shops around this area, if you'd like to do that. We also have the Frist Museum of Fine Arts that just opened recently. I figure once everyone gets together, you'll know what yall will want to do. I'm just providing options. It's nothing big. We can only do so much with the time we were given, but I think it will be a great time had by all in all cases, no? I also realize a lot of you are getting here over the weekend. If anyone has any suggestions to do anything on those days... I'm open to it. Email me or post it to the list, don't be shy. However, I'm planning on the Riverfront Gathering being the main gathering of the event. I don't know if anyone will have the energy to do stuff after the show, but if you are over 21, the bar scene at Nashville, is very interesting, to say the least. You'll find live music at 9 out of 10 bars (There might even be some Reggae for you, Dennis. I promise I'll go with you this time.) I suppose will get to the bridge when we cross it. Please feel free to email me here at VCavallo@aol.com or Cara at EDAGatheringTN@aol.com for any additional information and/or questions. We all want to help you have the best time. I can't wait to see yall. Mike, was that an honest mistake or are you trying to trip us up? :-) OK, here's the scoop. What I had done was was a little search-engine query for "Jewel" and "Nashville" and searched for URLs no more than 7 days old. I wanted to see if any online or newspaper articles somewhere referrred to NashBash last Sunday. One of the hits was that Rolling Stone page, which had a date of "August 5, 2001" on it AND the copyright at the bottom was "2001". Also, it was a report from Nashville. Seemed pretty much breaking news to me. I thought it was legit. Normally I would have called MrBB to see if this were true before I sent it on, but I know he's out of reach right now on vacation. So I sent it on. Of course now it seems it's a 4 year old piece of "breaking news". I learned my lesson. Sorry. There's a little bit of new information on the album. Jewel confirms once and for all that it's not a country record, and that two or three songs were recorded live (ie: at the EDA-Nashville concert I assume). There's one new name that comes up as a co-writer, and she confirms that most of the album was co-produced by Dan Huff. Anyway, it's an interesting read: What do you do for an encore after selling 20 million albums, writing one of the best-selling books of poetry ever, starring in a film by acclaimed director Ang Lee and becoming an international celebrity? For Jewel, the answer was easy, if not risky in this era of fleeting attention spans and fickle fans. "I took two years off, and decided I wasn't going to do anything in music that I didn't want to do," said the local singer- songwriter, who recently completed her fourth album, "This Way," in Nashville. She will preview a few songs from her upcoming album when she performs with her new band tonight and tomorrow at Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay on Shelter Island. "I like the craft of performing and songwriting so much," Jewel continued, speaking from the Rancho Santa Fe home she shares with her mother and manager, Nedra Carroll. "But I'm in this strange position of being a singer-songwriter in this massive pop medium, and the most important thing is maintaining my authenticity. So I decided to make a record I liked and believed in, and not pay attention to radio or trends. And if it hits, it hits." And if it doesn't? "The music business has really become similar to the movie business, in that it's all about the opening week (of sales)," she said. "But all of that is buying into a mythology, and I just decided not to believe in any of it anymore. I'm oddly about as ignorant about pop culture as I ever have been. I don't tend to listen to the radio; I just write little songs and go about things in my own way. "And I'm looking at it more as a career; it's just my fourth record and there will be more. So I took a lot of the pressure off myself. . . . It's important not to get stuck in that game of outdoing yourself." Commercially speaking, trying to outdo herself would be a foolish game for Jewel. Her 1995 debut album, "Pieces of You," has sold 13.5 million copies. Her 1998 sophomore effort, "Spirit" (5.5 million copies sold), and her 1999 Christmas release, "Joy: a Holiday Collection" (2 million copies), were also successful, as was her first book, 1997's "a night without armor," -- which with 800,000 in sales is one of the most popular poetry books ever. It also inspired the parody "a night without armor II: the revenge," by New York slam poet Beau Sia. "I thought it was really cool," Jewel said of Sia's satirical book. "I met that guy. Actually, he was really nice. I knew my poetry was something relevant that would speak to kids. That's why I included a lot of my really early poetry, so kids could watch my progress develop. Doing that encouraged so many kids to start writing and keep a certain self-awareness through their lives." Her first album yielded three Top 10 singles, "You Were Meant for Me," "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "Foolish Games," the last of which was featured in the soundtrack for the film "Batman and Robin." The videos for those songs made her a staple on MTV and VH1, and she was subsequently featured on the covers of such publications as Time and Rolling Stone. Jewel also did network TV, appearing with the likes of Leno and Letterman, and in January 1997 she performed at two inaugural balls at the behest of President Clinton. Later that same month, she won Favorite New Pop/Rock Artist honors at the 24th annual American Music Awards. A month later, she joined comedian Mike Myers to present an award during the Grammys telecast, where she was a double nominee. "It's funny how it hit my little brother, Atz Lee, that I was famous," Jewel said, reflecting on her ascent from struggling San Diego coffeehouse singer to top-selling folk-pop diva. "For him it was the fact that I was featured in a magazine ad for a (mail-order) CD club. That made him go: `Holy cow! Now she's famous.' I'd sold 8 million albums and been on a million magazine covers, but for him it was the CD club. "For me, it was opening concerts for Bob Dylan and getting to sing `St. Louis Blues' with B.B. King on a TV show in England. That made me think: `What a weird, wonderful world I'm traveling in, that I get to rub shoulders with people like that.' " A star is born Jewel, as is now well-known, grew up poor in Alaska and briefly lived in a van in Pacific Beach after moving here in 1992. Landing a weekly gig at the Inner Change in Pacific Beach, she built up a loyal cult following. She was signed by Atlantic Records in 1994, and she recorded most of her debut album live at the Inner Change. She toured relentlessly, opening shows for artists as varied as Jeff Buckley, the Ramones and Goth-rock icon Peter Murphy. Blessed with a batch of simple yet effective songs, a strong voice and an even stronger work ethic, she toiled to promote an album that wasn't expected to sell more than a few hundred thousand copies. But her rise brought intense media attention, which had much to do with being an attractive young woman who combined star power with a refreshingly un-starlike attitude. Soon more scrutiny was given to whom she was dating (Sean Penn!) and what she was wearing (that see- through dress at the 1997 Grammys!) than to her work. "I remember talking with Steve Poltz about this a long time ago," Jewel said, referring to her local musical mentor and erstwhile band member and songwriting partner. "We were both kind of locally famous, and both had record deals, and people started treating us different. I wasn't famous like I am now, but it was the first phase of things changing. And Steve said: `You're not changing; everybody's perception of you is changing.' And that's how it feels. "You find yourself constantly adjusting to how people think of you. That's where the real adjustment comes from. You react to the fairy tale because people react to the myth, because they're not able to know you, which is only natural." Invoking an interview conducted with her pal since 1997, techno star Moby, for a book about Jewel, she said: "For him, fame was like an accident of doing something he really liked doing vs. going out to get fame and using music as a vehicle to get it. It's been that way for me, too. "It's very surprising, humbling and flattering, and also kind of scary. Fame is definitely a strange thing to deal with. Now I sort of feel a lot more at peace with it. Luckily, I haven't been in the gossip columns too much, just because I'm such a hermit. I'm not the most-talked-about artist in the world, which suits me fine." Jewel's public image is both glamorous and down-to-earth. But her confidantes are familiar with other facets of her personality. "Before I knew her as a friend, my understanding was she was a delicate, retiring folk singer," said Moby, in a Union-Tribune interview last year. "As we became friends, I realized she was as far from a retiring folk singer as you can imagine. She's got the bawdiest sense of humor you can imagine. She's made me blush many times." Jewel giggled when asked about keeping her bawdy tendencies under wraps. "It's not that I try purposely to keep it hidden, it's just the nature of the beast," she said, adding, "You can never let your true personality shine (in public). "Without knowing me well, or spending years to become a friend, attending my concerts is the best way to see a pretty full spectrum of me -- the seriousness and the humor." Nashville skyline Jewel's growing emotional spectrum should be evident on her new album (due out Nov. 13). Recorded in Nashville, it was co-produced by Jewel and veteran studio guitarist Dann Huff, who also produced the latest Megadeth album and has worked with such acts as Madonna, Shania Twain, Bryan Ferry and Whitesnake. The album features some of Nashville's top country and Christian- music studio musicians, though Jewel stressed that "it doesn't sound like a Nashville record. It is not a country album, at all." She co-wrote some of the songs with tunesmith Rick Knowles, whose previous collaborators include Sinead O'Connor, Madonna and *NSYNC. Another song, "Till We Run Out of Road," was co-written by Jewel and her boyfriend, seven-time world rodeo champion Ty Murray. "It's a very versatile album," she said. "I don't know if people will say it's really different or makes sense. There's more rock 'n' roll, two or three songs we recorded live, and some mellow ballads. "If there's something I wanted to avoid with this record, it was being at the mercy of a producer. Not that they aren't super- talented, but I wanted my voice to shine through. I've always been a live musician, and my expertise is in how to work a crowd and communicate with an audience. "So making records was really foreign to me; you're singing (in the studio) for no one, which is really absurd. And I didn't know how to get a good performance out of myself, vocally. I'm a lot more comfortable now, because I'm finally getting to the point where the craft of recording isn't as foreign to me." The big question, though, is how her new album will fare in a world now dominated by teen-pop and rap-metal. In this flavor-of- the-month musical climate, is there still room on the charts for an introspective singer-songwriter like Jewel? "Record sales come and go, and I don't hold myself up against that measure -- that I'm only good if I sell X-amount of records," she replied. "I just hope to stay relevant as a writer, which means staying honest about where you are. And that's hard, in that songwriters start losing touch with the social pulse. "As an artist my talent has never really been to be hip, in the sense of following trends. All I know how to do is what's honest to me. It's why I think my fans have connected with me. But I think I'll always be curious musically, and try new things. "I don't want to look back on my music the way you look back on your photos in high school, when you had poufy hair. I want the music to sound honest and good in 20 years." That homey image works especially well in San Diego. As fans know, Jewel (born Jewel Kilcher and raised on an 800-acre Alaskan homestead) once lived in a van in Pacific Beach, surviving mostly on carrot sticks and performing weekly at the Innerchange Coffeehouse. Her success transcended the wildest dreams of all broke, struggling musicians. Although her lyrics and poetry have been derided as trite and self-important, Jewel has sold roughly 21 million albums, and her book of verse, "A Night Without Armor," spent considerable time on The New York Times Bestseller List. Briefly crossing over to another medium, she co-starred in Ang Lee's film "Ride With the Devil." (There has been at least one instance of a young fan having her teeth permanently altered to resemble Jewel's.) So along with the hound dog on Sunday, Jewel brought the confidence that comes with these surreal achievements. Almost immediately upon removing her red jacket at the beginning (an act rewarded by enthusiastic applause), she began projecting accessible unaffectedness. "Whoo, she took her coat off!" the singer gently mocked the audience. "That's what I like to be applauded for." As if to show she's more than a pretty blond pop star whose tank top and belt buckle were roughly the same size, Jewel began with an operatic, ethereal song in a foreign tongue that evoked thoughts of Enya. Jewel was so down-to-earth, in fact, that she forgot the lyrics to one of her songs -- "Kiss the Flame" from 1998's album "Spirit" -- and called upon a girl in front to come upstage and whisper them in her ear. The stunt, which could easily have fallen flat, charmed the crowd as the fan hammed up her performance a bit. Jewel is ideally heard accompanied by only her own guitar, because her crystalline, versatile voice is best appreciated on its own. Sunday night's band -- playing together for the first time -- tended to overpower that voice, drowning out its nuances and range. Very occasionally, one even heard something approaching the neer neer neer of an '80s hair-band electric-guitar solo. The hits were there, of course -- "Hands," "Who Will Save Your Soul" and the best-known song about pancakes and eggs in music history, "You Were Meant for Me." Each chart-topper was slightly restyled -- sung higher or rocked-up. The night was heavy on novelty songs, as well as lengthy introductions to them. "This is one of my deep and profound songs," Jewel said of "Cold Song." "Like all truly deep songs, this is a polka." The ditty, about getting frisky while feverish, got its share of laughs, and was immediately followed by the jaunty "Race Car Driver," a song based on a scary hitchhiking anecdote. "I was on the 15 north of Poway," she said of the experience. "Aren't we so local?" The concert contained a good preview of Jewel's album, "This Way," due Nov. 13. Although producers have touted some of its tracks as a "dangerous" stylistic departure, much of Sunday's new fare jibed with Jewel's previous work. The slow, airy ballads were there, as were the interspersed upbeat tunes such as "Standing Still" (one of the few songs enhanced by the band). "Jesus Loves You," a wheatgrass-roots, refreshing dose of liberal folkiness, transported the crowd out of the mainstream pop world. What came closer to "dangerous" was Jewel's authentic scat-sing -- for a few moments she turned the oh-so-California venue into a 1930s New York nightclub -- and her underutilized capacity to get screamy-sexy in a Joplin sort of way. The smooth-haired girls near the front loved it, as did the young parents with small children, the 50-something classic-folk fans, and the guys selling popcorn. It was, in short, a far cry from fighting to be heard over a cappuccino machine. Sarah Sabalos LaSpaluto is a San Diego-based writer. For most of the time since finishing promotional duties for her 1998 album "Spirit" and the 1999 Christmas collection "Joy," her only public performances were renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on the bull-riding circuit--where her boyfriend, Ty Murray, is seven-time Professional Rodeo Cowboy Assn. champ. She was close to making that her only performance venue, period. After a whirlwind stretch of five years in which she sold more than 11 million albums in the U.S., wrote two books, became a fashion icon and co-starred in a movie ("Ride With the Devil"), she was done in. "I got real tired," says Jewel, 26. "It got real hard for me to keep up with everything. I ended up having to take a lot of time off and wasn't sure I'd want to come back to the business or not. There's a lot about it I love, but a lot that doesn't suit my nature." Jewel reconnected with her nature while living in the wide-open spaces of Murray's Texas ranch and in the rodeo world. But she also reconnected with her music and is ready to return to the pop life--although she's making sure her nature is reflected in both her upcoming album, due Nov. 13, and her image. On the latter, she says to expect down-home rather than designer. "It's every girl's fantasy to get dressed up," she says. "But now I want to be more of what I am in everyday life--blue jeans and messy hair." The music too will be less glossy this time around. She's traded in the pop sheen of "Spirit," which was produced by frequent Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, and the Christmas sessions, produced by veteran Arif Mardin, for an earthier approach closer to the folk-rock base of her debut, "Pieces of You." The new material was co-produced by Jewel with Dan Huff (Faith Hill, SheDaisy) in Nashville, and ranges from the expected first single "Standing Still" (which actually could go next to a Faith Hill song on radio) to the gritty "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" (which would be compatible alongside Melissa Etheridge rockers). The singer-songwriter even recorded an invitation-only live show set in a Nashville coffeehouse recently, with some of those tracks likely to make it onto the album. "On the first record it was easy to keep it raw and undone," she says. "Then suddenly people are thinking they have to make hits for radio. I was really protective of the songs this time." Not that Atlantic executives--and Jewel--aren't looking for hits now. But they agree that it all got a bit out of control before. "She's become incredibly mature and directed with a really fine sense of herself," Atlantic general manager Ron Shapiro says. "Marketing her now is about letting it be known that where we left her is not really what Jewel is. "She's not the cover [of fashion magazines]....We're not going to be too precious, not going to take advantage of every opportunity this time, but choose things that are going to let the truth be known about who she's become over the last two years." ------------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Aug 31 03:36:29 2001 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f7V7aSlj004938 for ; Fri, 31 Aug 2001 03:36:28 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id f7V7aRnU004937 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 31 Aug 2001 03:36:27 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200108310736.f7V7aRnU004937@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 03:25:19 -0400 To: Jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: [EDA] Austin City Limits with Jewel re-airing Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Rachel wrote: >Austin City Limits with Jewel will be on AGAIN on Saturday Sept. 1 at > 8:00PM Central time on your PBS station. Actually, it depends on the local PBS affiliate in each viewing area. Many stations will be showing it this weekend, many/some won't, and the days and times will vary for the stations that do. (it might be on September 2nd in some areas) It's best to check your local listings to see exactly when it will air in your area or to try www.pbs.org and then head to the "station finder" to see if your local affiliate has their own web page and online schedule.
