To: jewel-news@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk So, hello all... Well, the only reading she actually did was to read about how Jacque (which I thought was pronounced Jack but apparently is said as Jackie) died. How morbid, I almost wanted to cry! Almost. After the performance I was waiting on line to get my copy of the book signed and I overheard the people in front saying, "I can't believe someone asked her to read that, I mean, it must have been pretty hard to print it on the book" and I was surprised, because I hadn't thought of it that way. But I was surprised by how composed she was reading the selection, not breaking down. I was amazed. She even helf-joked, "Thanks for giving me an easy thing to read". The interview was by a man from Rolling Stone. That enough was a big deal to me. I muttered "damn" as he was introduced. "Rolling Stone" is a big deal to me. He seemed to know a lot of the things in the book, so it wasn't like, "So, you lived in a van when you were eighteen? You lived in Alaska?" Actually, he did ask about Alaska, but it was much deeper into it, and she'd talk about gigs and everything. And there was talk about her relationship with her dad because we always hear Nedra this, Nedra that, not that I don't mind, but wouldn't her Dad feel left out? What else? Well, Noo Yawkers as we are, we refused to turn off our cell phones and not to take pictures. So the person next to me, well the one after, took a pic of Juel and the usher came and was like "If you do that one more time we'll take the camera" and then some man came and just asked for it right then and the person was like "No" (great...). So they got some high position lady to come and the person was like "I don't have anything" so they left the person alone. Behind me, were these really nice people who laughed heartily and were loud kinda but weren't too bad. Juel said something funny, and this little girl giggled and Juel asks who laughed so cutely, and the people behind are laughing, waiting for a response, so that makes her laugh which makes everyone laugh. (Did you get that?) Juel said her favorite song right now was Rosie and Mick and the person behind me said "Oh, YEAH" in approval and Juel thinks it's funny, "Oh YEAH, I haven't even released it". Hm. Also, Juel was talking about how she'd gotten 100,000 bucks and rented an expensive $1300/ month apartment, and the interviewer was like, "It's not to New Yorkers!" (especially that neighborhood, they're pretty rich on that side) Everyone laughs, haha, hoho, so funny. Anyway, she had been worried about saving money and everything and had been talking to her friend, and he was like, "What are you talking about, there'll be more coming" and she asked him "You mean there's more where that came from?" Then people were able to ask questions and someone brought up the Clearwater project and fundraising and raising awareness. So Nedra talked to us a little. Before everything started Nedra came and everyone was just staring like, "Omigod is that Nedra?" and I whispered (actually, I was pretty loud, my dad kept telling me to quiet down) "Dad, I think that's her mom" and he's like, naw, so I said "I told you!" I thought the HGH people had only worked in Honduras but Nedra was naming so many more places where they'd made a difference, so I was real happy. One girl was called on to ask a question and she's like, "Me?" Her voice trembled and she was sobbing and had to catch a breath while she asked her question, so Juel said "God I'm sorry to do this to you, but could you ask me the question again?" I didn't have a copy of the book, and the interview had ended and there were copies of the book, and my dad's like, "I'll buy you one", when just a few weeks ago he hadn't wanted to because it was 24 bucks. It was 50% off, but he denied that wasn't the reason. I was like, whatever. And then I wanted to go home, but my dad's like "get it signed!" So I sighed and I waited on line. I got there and I said hi, and she signed it so fast I only said thank you and left. She didn't even say hi back, I don't think. (Don't start fighting again though, she had already said she didn't have much time.) I wish I could have told her, "Guess what? I graduated in that interview hall. I've been on that stage too." Maybe when I'm a famous person... ===== ~*Liz*~ the Misplaced Angel HARMLESS & SHAMELESS PLUGS (if you can, check 'em out!) In addition to talking extensively about the new book, the popular author, singer, and actress revealed to LAUNCH that she intends to start recording a new album in January. "I'm going to start working on a new record at the beginning of the year. I finally decided to jump back in," she said. "I've been writing music, you know? I write all the time. I don't know what the record's going to end up like--I have no idea. I've been on the road doing a lot of rock performance stuff--you know, all band-driven rock music--which I've been enjoying a lot. And since I've been off the road, I've been doing a lot of storytelling--I guess 'folk music'--and enjoying that a lot. I've been working with some friends and doing bossa novas and Cuban music," she added, "so I have no idea which way the record's going to go. I guess we'll just see how it goes." The still-untitled new Jewel album will be the follow-up to 1998's Spirit, which spawned her hit singles "Hands" and "Down So Long." -- Jason Gelman, New York ---------------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk for Pieces Of UK; Jewel Enquirer; Jewel Weblog From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Dec 1 12:36:49 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA05247 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 1 Dec 2000 12:36:29 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200012011736.MAA05247@smoe.org> From: PinkFleshyHeart@aol.com Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 09:56:17 EST Subject: Jewel-News: [EDA] Vote for Jewel in Fave "one-named star" poll online To: jewel-news@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone :) Wow...two posts in three days! I'm on a roll. USA Today.com has a poll for your favorite one-named star, and Jewel is one of the six choices they give. Jewel, Madonna, Cher, Sting, Prince and Chad are the choices. I think Chad is a joke choice. Duh! You can find the poll at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lfront.htm and the latest results are not good at all. Of 95 votes thus far Jewel is in last place with 8.4% while Sting leads with 21%, but with the many EDAs here, we can easily blow away those 95 votes with a few hundred of our own. I am not sure, but I think these polls run for one day or two, so you better hurry! So personable and intimate She sat there with a guy who interviewed her. She talked about all kinds of things like her childhood stories and why she chose to write a book about them, her feelings on the idea of "becoming famous", how she was afraid of developing into the illusions that the media wanted to create of her, and even her upcoming album and tour!It lasted at least an hour, which from what i heard is much longer than her recent booksigning. She really talked away.. after each question, she would answer and then continue on into a relative story. Her mom who was sitting right behind me stood up to talk about HGH. Then she took questions - lots of questions from the audience. and afterwards had a signing where she even stood and let people take pictures with her! It was one of those awesome opportunities that I am really glad I didnt miss out on! The two new items for 2000, the Limited Edition Jewel Ornament/Lightcatcher and the 100% recycled glass candleholder are selling briskly. Last year, the 1999 Edition Ornament sold out quickly and many people were disappointed when they could not purchase one. There's also a "Holiday Spirit Special" assembled that includes four of the best selling items from the Spirit World Tour at an unbelievably low price. On a different note, JMerch is announcing its newly created Clearance Department at http://www.jeweljk.com/store/shophome.html, featuring many items at up to 75% off! We'd also like to congratulate Amparo Herrera from Texas, who wins the "A Night Without Armor" bookstore poster in our last www.jeweljk.com contest. Our new contest begins now. Producer Dean English told MTV News that the footage will be packaged in three different versions: a theatrical release, geared for film festivals, which will run 95 minutes; and two different television specials, running one and two hours each, for network broadcast. The program has already been sold to Canada's WIC television network, though the U.S. and world rights have yet to be marketed. The producer said that he expects this fall to be the earliest the program will air, with the latest being next spring. English explained that the project isn't simply a string of onstage performances, but more of an overview of the entire Lilith Fair experience. The production includes interviews with founder Sarah McLachlan, her co-conspirators, her band, the crew, and the audience, as well as performers from all three of the festival's stages. At least one retail video version of the documentary will be made available for sale in stores. This article does have a little Jewel content (one small mention), but I feel it fits in with the general genre of this list. Mike :-) From http://www.usatoday.com/life/lphoto.htm Title: The disappearing popular songwriter By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY NEW YORK It's after 3 o'clock on a late-summer afternoon in downtown Manhattan, and Joan Osborne is finally ordering lunch. Osborne has been busily promoting her new album, Righteous Love, the long-awaited follow-up to her 1995 major-label debut, the multiplatinum Relish. The delay, she explains, was because of a number of factors, including Mercury Records' decision to drop her in 1999 only three years after she garnered seven Grammy nominations and graced the cover of Rolling Stone. Joni Mitchell 'Big Yellow Taxi' 'The Circle Game' James Taylor 'You've Got a Friend' Osborne muses that label executives "might have lumped me in with a Lilith Fair moment that they thought was over," alluding to the concert tour that became a media metaphor for the critical and commercial success of young female singer/songwriters in the mid-to-late '90s. "But I don't think my time has passed because I'm a woman who sings and writes songs." Fast-forward about four months, to the present. Righteous Love, which arrived in stores Sept. 12, has sold fewer than 80,000 copies, despite glowing notices and numerous high-profile television appearances. Certainly, it's too early to proclaim the album a dud, or to issue a postmortem on Osborne's career. The singer notes, "An artist can have loyal fans and a legitimate career without being on the cover of every magazine at a given moment." Still, it could be argued that the relatively slow progress of Osborne's latest CD highlights a trend that has affected similar artists, both male and female, in recent years. As bubblegum pop and more aggressive forms of rock and hip-hop have gained commercial clout, the singer/songwriter that folk-based breed whose stock in trade is the ability to craft and deliver songs is becoming less prominent on magazine covers and, more significantly, radio playlists. Prefab and image-driven acts have, of course, always played a key part in rock 'n' roll. But since the '60s, the singer/songwriter has, in various guises, also managed to remain a forceful presence in rock music and culture. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and others shared the public's fascination along with The Monkees and Alice Cooper. Creatively autonomous stars as diverse as Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, Prince and Tracy Chapman, Sinead O'Connor and Sheryl Crow followed. But radio is seemingly less friendly for many of those artists and their would-be successors today. Even contemporary stations that have traditionally embraced singer/songwriters are relying more on boy bands and baby divas. Sean Ross, editor of radio magazine Airplay Monitor, points to the cyclical nature of pop charts and playlists. "Eventually, radio turns on anything that it plays a lot of," he says. "I guess the cycle turns on what (programmers) get sick of." Over the past two years, Ross says, that has led to a backlash against some female singer/songwriters who came to the fore in the Lilith era. "When the last Jewel album came out, there was only one hit. The last Alanis Morissette album didn't have many hits, either." Ross also identifies "a generational split that has affected some older rock artists. You have 26-year-old (program directors) who don't want to play Billy Joel or Don Henley." Actually, Henley's current album, the platinum Inside Job, is one of the few CDs released by baby-boomer singer/songwriters recently Sting's double-platinum 1999 effort, Brand New Day, is another that has shown tenacity on the commercial airwaves. But Henley remains concerned about the state of radio and about what the declining profiles of singer/songwriters artists who often develop careers more slowly than other pop sensations, and who are valued for injecting thoughtfulness and social commentary into pop music may reflect about the music business and society at large. Overfed and undernourished "I don't begrudge the kids their teeny-bopper music," Henley says. "But I have a concern about the balance on radio and in the marketplace. There should be a wide spectrum out there. But it seems we're not living in a very philosophical or introspective time. There are a lot of young people who are socially minded, but many of them are laboring in relative obscurity. The emphasis is now on exhibitionism. That's always been true to a certain degree in rock 'n' roll, but I've never quite seen things reach this level of form over content. "I think we're living in an age of unbridled capitalism. And as we're seeing the (music) industry become more and more caught up in the global corporate machinery, we're seeing less support for art and more support for artifice." Paul Simon, who also recently released an album, the widely praised You're the One, perceives a similar dynamic. "There's no dearth of people who are producing beautiful and satisfying music for every taste," he says. "But that diversity of talent is not reflected in the corporate culture. "The problem is that what radio lays out isn't broad enough. That's because radio owners are concerned about revenue, and revenue is decided by creating demographic groups and serving those groups a certain menu, repeatedly, so that they end up overfed and undernourished." For James Taylor, this problem is exacerbated by the "merger mania" that has seen record companies folding into conglomerates. "When I was coming up, the business was more whimsical and friendlier to the artists," Taylor says. "But there are about five record companies now, and if you're an executive at one of those companies, you have to show a corporate overlord a bottom line. So the businessmen are sweating bullets, too." Michael Penn, a critically respected singer/songwriter who had one hit single, No Myth, a decade ago, concurs. "There's no longer a system where record company executives feel like they can establish tenure and dedicate their time to developing an artist," he says. "They're always looking over their shoulder, waiting for the ax to fall. So it's 'What's on the radio? What's selling now? Get me something like that, fast.' And I think that's devalued music." Adds Rickie Lee Jones, "Ninety percent of people in the record industry wouldn't know a good song if it called them on their cellphones. I don't think anyone has anything against singer/songwriters personally; there's just a general malaise, a decline in things artistic." The obvious question, then, is where the next generation of influential singer/songwriters will come from, and how or if they will be nurtured. This is an especially significant issue for Billy Joel, who is focusing on writing classical music but whose 14-year-old daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, is a budding singer/songwriter. "She writes extremely interesting chord progressions -- very different, very unorthodox," the elder Joel says proudly. "But when I try to encourage this individual voice, she says, 'Dad, I can't be a pop singer if I write that way.' That may be indicative of how a lot of young people feel now. All the radio formats seem very strict, and it's probably very intimidating for a young person with a unique, original approach." Another fledgling singer/songwriter whom Joel admires, Shawn Mullins, has additional worries about the current pop climate's influence on young people. Resurgence in storytelling Mullins, whose 1998 breakthrough hit, Lullaby, made him one of the few new singer/songwriters to crack the top 10 in the past couple of years, says: he shares Henley's ambivalence about the abundance of apathetic or, sometimes, violent lyrics and imagery in today's flashier and frothier pop. "I'm all for people expressing themselves however they want to. But some of the stuff I'm hearing, from people like Eminem I think, man, we need to take a look at this. The singer/songwriters I've loved would talk about important stuff in a constructive way. I'm hoping there's a resurgence of real storytelling. I think there will be, because younger people are starting to think politically again." For longtime cult favorite Aimee Mann, the lack of substance and sensitivity in songwriting is a reflection of "the cynicism of the record industry. If all people hear is music written by people who don't care what they're writing about, that's what they'll buy." Another esteemed veteran, John Hiatt, is more optimistic. Hiatt sees the singer/songwriter tradition being adapted and revitalized in a contemporary vein by stars such as Macy Gray, whom he praises as "a great example of the boat being shaken up." Indeed, Sade, a forerunner of Gray's, recently entered the Billboard album chart at No. 3 above Ricky Martin with the album Lovers Rock, a collection of spare acoustic songs that she wrote and produced herself. VH1 executive Bill Flanagan, creator of the singer/songwriter-driven series Storytellers, adds that many of today's more rock-oriented singer/songwriters, particularly men, are fronting bands. "There were a lot of openings for female singer/songwriters on the pop charts in recent years, but very few for men," Flanagan says. "I think the male singer/songwriter has very much gone into rock bands." Flanagan won't get an argument from Lilith founder Sarah McLachlan. "There were great male singer/songwriters like David Gray and Ron Sexsmith who couldn't get played on the radio a few years ago if it killed them," McLachlan says. "At one point, there were certain stations that played nothing but women. It was like, 'Women are hot, so we're not going to bother with men.' "I just wish there was more of a sense of balance. I don't think that when Lilith ended, Limp Bizkit suddenly took over, but the industry makes it seem that way. The bands making that kind of harder, slightly misogynistic music are now the ones getting the covers of Rolling Stone and the record sales and the MTV play. But I think people still listen to me and Tracy Chapman and Sheryl Crow. And I think there's the same frustration over radio that existed when we were getting tons of airplay and David Gray couldn't get any." Perhaps McLachlan can take heart in Gray's progress in recent months. Flanagan identifies him as one of several artists who have emerged from England as a "great, classic singer/songwriter." Pop fans are beginning to agree: Gray is one of a pair of young British minstrels the other, Dido, is a woman who have enjoyed steadily rising album sales in recent months. Notably, both artists use modern technology to update their approach. "I think songwriting has to move into the next century," says Gray, whose fans also include Hiatt and Henley. "It's going to look more and more ridiculous to emulate things that happened in the '60s and '70s. There have been some massive characters in the singer/songwriter field that have cast huge shadows, and that's been a bit daunting for those coming after them. But maybe there's enough of a gap now that it can be done differently." Former artist manager and major-label executive Danny Goldberg, now CEO of the independent Artemis Records, agrees. "There's always been a lot of competition in music, because the public only has an appetite for so many heroes," he says. "But I still think there's an environment in which people making personal, idiosyncratic statements can reach an audience." "There's a tremendous underground swell of songwriters and players who have no interest in who or what the latest pop sensation is," Paul Simon says. "The whole concept of stars is bogus, anyway. What's a star compared to a song that lasts 100 years? Nothing. Absolutely nothing." I'll send the other one next. :)Dee Jewel:The Exclusive MusicMatch Interview with Jewel by Jason Riggs In many ways, the story of 26-year-old Jewel Kilcher resembles a fairy tale. It has the classic formula: a pure-hearted girl of modest means realizes her dream after overcoming a variety of obstacles. Plus, it's a story that has probably been told more than Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood combined. Since growing up as a ranch-hand in Homer, Alaska, Jewel has gone from living in a van and playing coffeehouses in San Diego, to a celebrated actor, author and multi-platinum artist performing at major arenas and festivals nationwide. However, her new book Chasing Down the Dawn, illustrates how her fairy-tale story includes its share of growing pains, life lessons and heartache. For years, Jewel has shared countless personal stories with her fans during live performances, but Chasing Down the Dawn takes that intimacy to a whole new level with deeply personal and poignant prose full of striking imagery. MusicMatch caught up with the very busy but extremely accommodating Jewel to discuss her solo acoustic tour, the well-timed re-release of Joy: A Holiday Collection, her charitable Higher Ground for Humanity and Clearwater Projects and her insightful book, Chasing Down the Dawn. Jewel's Latest Charity Projects MusicMatch: How is the Higher Ground for Humanity project going? Jewel: I was really, really pleased that Netaid picked it up. We were really happy about that and real proud of that. It's been pretty blessed. It's been lucky that way. MM: The Clearwater Project is interesting because it focuses on something that a lot of other causes overlookbclean drinking water. What inspired you to champion that cause? J: Water is tremendously expensive, even for us. I drink about eight - [1.5 liter] bottles of water each day, because of my kidneys. And, there was a time when affording that bottle of water was very hard. It got me concerned at that age to start wondering why there is bottled water and I learned what a global problem it was...and how easy it actually is to have an impact on it...how easy it is to install water sites and those types of things. There doesn't have to be a lot of red tape. You can actually just spend money, put in the site and people have better water. It seemed like a really good and viable first project for Higher Ground to start up. MM: You've already made a difference in Mexico. What was that like for you to bring clean water to this impoverished region? J: Four continents actually: Honduras, Mexico, Africa and India...already MM: You are doing a webcast for Netaid on November 16. Can you tell me a little bit about that? Will it be a solo performance? J: Yeah, it's solo stuff. Touring, Recording and Writing MM: What motivated you to undertake a solo acoustic tour? J: I just love it. I enjoy it a lot. It's real simple to tour that way. It's not like you have to have a big hullabaloo traveling circus with you. It's just you and your guitar and [Steve] Poltz is with me so that's really fun. I get to play new songs and it's a lot of fun. MM: How many new songs do you have? J: I don't know I haven't counted...I just write all the time. MM: What was it like recording your Christmas album Joy: A Holiday Collection? You were playing a lot of Holiday standards, working with choirs...that must have been a new experience for you. Was it intimidating at all? J: It was one of the easiest records that I have done. Arif Mardin has immaculate efficiency and, I think, very good taste and he made it a very easy record. I was doing it when I was on a world tour b as you can imagine it's quite difficult to do a record that way. But, he laid all the tracks just like I wanted them. I didn't have to be there supervising which was a tremendous relief in a lot of ways. Then I ended up just coming and being able to sing. I liked singing those songs because I got to use my voice in a different way than I do on my own stuff and in my pop stuff. I got to sing in more of a classic voice. I loved doing "Ava Maria" and those songs, which I don't get to do on normal records...though, live, I do sing arias and those kinds of things. MM: Your new book, Chasing Down the Dawn, is extremely personal b which is something that your fans have come to appreciate about you. But, was there something different about putting such personal events and thoughts in a book as opposed to a song? J: I think it's real different. I think you get a better feel for how my mind organizes thought and perceives circumstance and environment. So, it's a little more detailed than a song that's three minutes. My songs aren't, real often, very autobiographical...it's usually whatever tells a good story for the song. Whereas this [book] is pretty direct. There's not a lot of fiction in there at all. MM: Did you contemplate adding any topic or event that you ended up omitting? J: There's definitely things that aren't in there. [laughs] MM: But, is there anything specific that you wrestled with adding to or omitting from the book? J: I was real mindful of how I put my relationship with my dad in there, obviously, because I wanted to do it justice and honor. I wanted to accomplish something specific with it that wasn't gossipy as much as it was hopefully to be educational to kids that are in relationships with their parents that may not be the best. I feel proud of how I did that. MM: I think my favorite section was the "Texas Draught." It had some great visuals (even though the castration scene left a knot in my stomach) J: That's so funny. People are having a really strong reaction to that. MM: Your writing is so refreshing: intellectual and honest. Is writing something that has always come naturally? J: I think this is the first time I really tackled prose. I think my patience is really growing as a writer. I've always enjoyed poetry because it was so instant b the same as songwriting b it's just a page long. But, I've really been enjoying the prose format. I like that as a craft a lot. I enjoyed doing it tremendously. MM: Your book is also available on an audio CD b read by you. Were there any unique challenges in reading and recording spoken word as opposed to music? It's not as easy as most people might think. J: I think I wished I'd spent a little more time with it. I did it all in one afternoon and that was a lot of pages to read. So, I don't think I thought about what I was doing as much as I could have. Actually, I haven't listened to it ...oddly enough. But, it is different. I didn't know how it would come off to tell you the truth. I didn't know if I just sounded monotone [laughs] or just bored after a while. You know, your throat gets hoarse after seven hours. The Simplicity of Life MM: You've always been a person who lays everything on the table. Does that ever make you feel vulnerable? J: I'm very protective of certain things...obviously. I tend to, for some reason, feel a lot less vulnerable when I'm honest. Because, there's nothing people can't find out about you. What do I have to hide really? Who cares? I think everybody has probably shoplifted in their life, and if they haven't it's not some big deal. You know what I mean? I think it's good for kids to know that we're all human and we all do things that are good and bad and we live and we grow. That's kind of what it's all about. It doesn't really bug me too much. MM: Obviously, being in the position you're in has its benefits, but do you wish you could go back to being that young singer/storyteller playing at the Innerchange in San Diego? J: Sometimes I miss the simplicity of it, for sure. But, I'd never change anything. I think it's important to remember that I can make my life as simple as I want it. In this business, you start to feel like your life becomes dictated by what you've chosen. Like I put in the book, you're dreaming the dream...you feel like you've become dreamt by the machine. So, I think always remembering that...you have control and it can be whatever you want b retirement at 26 and going back to coffee shops or continuing in ways that you enjoy. So, I think I can always go back to that. I think the only thing that's scary is stalkers. It can be a real drawback. MM: Have you had any scary stalker incidents? J: Yeah definitely. It's scary. It's life-threatening and very serious. A lot of people deal with it. MM: Do you still get star-struck being in the company of music legends? J: Definitely. There's always people that make you amazed to be around. MM: Is there anybody in particular that stands out? J: I think BB King. He's the nicest guy in the world. He's like talking to someone you've known your whole life. He's so great. It's hard for me to fake those things, and I don't find much use in doing it. Plus, I live my life in front of people, and it would be terrible pretending [all the time]. It would be hard. Q: Your book is very personal and reveals a lot of private thoughts -- what do you think that does for your privacy? Does it open a door and sort of throw people a bone? It just brings me closer to Jesus. That was a joke. I feel safer the more I reveal and the more honest I can be about it. People find out everything about you anyway ... When I was young, my role models were people who were the most honest in their writing, good and bad. You know, people like Bukowski, Anais Nin, a lot of people where you saw the depravity as well as their fleeting bits of courage. And that made me feel like that was a real role model, somebody that you could style your life after, somebody who had the courage to live life honestly. And I didn't want to leave those things out, because I would feel hypocritical to what I admired as a child. Q: You've done poetry, prose, written songs. How do you decide what ideas you save for a song, as opposed to what becomes a poem? I don't know how I pick. I get asked that question a lot, and I never really have an answer for it, unfortunately. I think you always end up in the same place. If a fan reads a poem or listens to a song, or reads something out of a book b& I think they all take you to the same destination; it's just that the trip of how you get there is very different. I find them to be quite separate. Like, my poetry very rarely translates into song, though I think I have a poetic approach to lyrics, but [poems] hardly ever get turned into lyrics and vice versa. The mediums are real different, and they do different things b& poems affect you in different way than music does. Q: The music world is very different than it was when you released your debut. Have you thought about how you fit into the new scene? I didn't fit into the first scene. I mean, I came out at the height of grunge. "Who Will Save Your Soul" got played in between Nirvana and Soundgarden. I think people tend to respond, with me [at least], to sincerity. I have careers that I admire and that I try to model my career after, looking for longevity. There's not many of those careers, but there are some, like, say, Neil Young, who've remained creatively viable. And I realized that it's not my job to be constant; it's not my job to produce constant hits. My job is to be constantly creative, but I don't think that means that I'll always be number one in the public eye or anything like that, and that's OK. Creativity has rhythms, and I feel like it's my job to be tenacious about pursuing that, and to stick up for that craft more than anything else, and to pursue that craft more than anything else, and to love that craft more than anything else. I think that where that falls in the public standing will fluctuate through the years, and sometimes it'll be more in and sometimes it'll be more out. But I do know that at least I'll have sanity, because of what I've done each time. Q: Were you surprised at how well your poetry book did? It's not as if poetry is usually a huge seller. I think [the publisher] was like, "OK, we'll do the poetry book, but we want the book with all the personal things in it, too, because that'll be the seller." Everybody thought that the poetry book would sell less and this one would sell more, but I don't know. The response I got from my songwriting and what I saw kids wanting, and the response I was getting to those teeny little poems in the back of the first record b& I knew that kids would be touched, that there was a strong emotional hunger in people and that poetry can fill that in a way that I think was pretty unique. And I was glad to see that; it did surprise me. And I was real glad to see the response and to see so many schools instilling poetry programs. I think writing has a lot to offer kids, whether it's music or poems, or prose. Q:Both your last single and Ride with the Devil weren't huge commercial successes. Can you shrug those things off, or does it bug you that success is measured by numbers like that? I don't think it bugs me that it's measured like that. I mean, that's what field I'm in, and I know how it works, but it's not how I internalize it, either. I think Ride with the Devil was an excellent first movie for me, because it was an invaluable partnering for me; it was a mentorship that I think I was incredibly fortunate to benefit from b& I don't know what other people expected, but I know I did a good performance, and I know that I got good feedback on it. Everything else is up to the fates. It's up to how movie houses promote a movie, and there's so many other things involved in it that you don't have any control over, and you can't take it very personally even if you did. I've always tended to do things that I feel very passionate about, as I've said before, and I know I won't always have successes, but I hope I'll always have the courage to do what I believe in. And I'm sure there'll be things that I don't pull off gracefully or graciously, but it'll be because I'm hearing something, I'm trying something, I'm grasping at something, and now I have to do that in front of people. I don't have the luxury of doing it in my own home. [But] to not do something because I fear the critics would be the ultimate sin creatively. Q: Do you have any idea what your next project will be like, or how the next record will sound? I have a Christmas record again this year, called Joy, and I got to sing on Rosie [O'Donnell's] Christmas record [Another Rosie Christmas] which was kind of fun. I'm going to start working on a new record at the beginning of the year. I've finally decided to jump back in. I've been writing music, you know -- I write all the time. I have no idea what it's going to be like, the record. I've been on the road doing a lot of rock performance stuff, all band-driven stuff, which I've been enjoying a lot. And since I've been off the road, I've been doing a lot of, you know, story telling, quote unquote folk music, and enjoying that a lot. [And] I've been working with friends doing bossa novas and Cuban music, so I have no idea which way the record's gonna go. We'll just see how it goes. Anything new to report? - Jim Chiang, Boulder, Colo. For the past few months, the singer -- whose first book of poetry was published two years ago -- has been promoting her second book, a collection of musings, artwork and more called Chasing Down the Dawn. But don't worry: Jewel, 26, who dates professional bull rider Ty Murray, is ready to start a fourth album (counting her 1999 Christmas CD), for release in 2001. It has no theme yet, but material will be no problem. We're told she writes all the time and sometimes surprises audiences with a new song. The holiday items include the 2000 version of the Jewel Christmas ornament, which comes packaged with a special holiday CD (2 tracks) that Jewel and Lenedra sent to friends and co-workers a couple of years back as a holiday/Christmas card. Just so you know, there's about 125 of the ornament/CD packages left (of 300 originally available). The holiday candle also comes with that CD (about 25 packages left). Then there's the "Another Rosie Christmas" CD which has Jewel and Rosie duetting on "Face Of Love" and has 13 other tracks with various artists (Rosie does the same harmonies that Lenedra did on "Face Of Love" for the "Joy: AHC" CD) and also available is the video version of "Joy: A Holiday Collection". I'm primarily writing today because a few of you mentioned that you donated to Clearwater via their website donation form, but forgot to put "EDA" in the FAX field, so they could include you in EDA year end totals. If this applies to you, we can help you fix that. Please send an email to hgh@jeweljk.com simply telling them you are an EDA and forgot that step. Include your name and the amount you donated and they will match you to your donation and add your contribution to the EDA year-end total. For the convenience of new folks, a condensed repeat of the relevant info follows. Thanks and enjoy the weekend! MrBB ********************************************************** For new folks who were not here last year, many EDAs raised almost $5,000 for HGH/Clearwater as a Christmas gift to Jewel last winter. This money, combined with a $25,000 "Smooch For A Cure" grand prize, (which the EDAs helped Jewel win for Clearwater), led to a Clearwater site in Gualcea, Honduras. This water site was specifically funded from this $30,000 total and is officially dedicated to the EDA's. You can learn more about your water site at: www.clearwaterproject.org/cchonduras.html The funding for this water site is being implemented in two stages. The first stage cost $30,000, which was the money mentioned above, that initiated the Gualcea water site earlier this year. The second stage will cost approximately $45,000 and will be sent sometime this coming year. Many of you have indicated that you want to continue this effort, as this year's Christmas present to Jewel. Your contributions are very appreciated and along with HGH fundraising efforts, will help complete this project. Here's the instructions: You can either donate online or by mailing in a check or money order. In order to track the EDA donations, so that we can let you know how much you've raised, here's the scoop: If you'd like to mail your contribution, please write EDA in the upper left hand corner of your check. Make it payable to Higher Ground for Humanity (or HGH) and indicate Clearwater in the memo. Mail your contribution to: HGH/Clearwater Project Attention: EDA PO Box 9002 Carlsbad, CA 92018 USA We also have a new online donation page! If you make your contribution online, PLEASE ENTER "EDA" IN THE FAX FIELD OF THE ONLINE ORDER FORM. The minimum amount you can donate online is $10, so if you prefer to send in less, please use the mail-in instructions. The web site page is at http://www.clearwaterproject.org/dodonations.html - it also has instructions and a form you can print out for mailing your check. (This form isn't necessary, however.) I'm glad to report I am finally adjusting to a warm and sunny Christmas. In fact, I downright love it. I just returned from Germany, Bosnia and Kosovo where I managed to get my fill of the icy blustery winter thing. Yes, I did just casually mention Kosovo and Bosnia. Pretty cool, huh? I was entertaining the troops for the holidays for the USO. I flew from D.C. in an E-4 (an E-4 is a HUGE military aircraft which is the flying headquarters in case of war) with several sports figures and entertainers and Medal of Honor Recipients. John Glenn, Carole King, Terry Bradshaw and Michael Singletary just to name a few. We each did a short bit. Oh yeah, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were there too, in short shorts galore! It was great, though it probably just tortured the poor soldiers as much as it entertained them. The show lasted about 2 hours. We even did a show on a naval aircraft carrier. We were flown in a C-17 from Munich to Naples, then helicoptered out to the carrier. It was amazing. And as you can imagine, it was rewarding to sing for the troops. Nothing like a starved and captive audience in remote regions! Talk about appreciative. It was very fun and fulfilling. The troops really serve out of a genuine sense of honor and duty that is easy to lose touch with in our daily lives. It was very touching. And they are so young. It is heartening to see how many ways there are to serve our lives, world, country and humanity. Often I think of how proud I am of all of you for giving thought to the philosophy of giving throughout the year, and not just once around the holidays. But how great it is at the holidays!
