It's actually somewhat positive ... they said the book is a mixed back, but genuinely honest and that jewel is a good writer. they said they thought the book should've been a straight memoir because the best bits are concerning her childhood in alaska, which they described as "genuinely fascinating". i think what they're saying is that the originality of the book comes out of these sections. i dunno... it was quite a positive review. steve From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Nov 3 14:57:45 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id OAA05796 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 3 Nov 2000 14:57:36 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200011031957.OAA05796@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 22:38:45 -0500 (EST) From: MrBB To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: EDA/HGH Christmas Project & Card Advice Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, I just wanted to status update you on the EDA/HGH Christmas Project. We ARE going to have specific instructions for EDAs, so we can track your contributions like last year. It will be a week or two before we can have these procedures in place for you, so please be patient. Of course, we welcome anyone donating to Clearwater at any time, but if you'd enjoy having your contribution counted with EDA totals earmarked for your Gualsea water site, then please hang in there a little while longer. We'll still have plenty of time before the holidays and with so many other things going on simultaneously in everyone's lives this time of year, we want this to run as smoothly as possible for us all. In the meantime, I'm told there's confusion over sending Jewel an EDA Christmas card to go along with this project. I haven't been following list discussion on this, but I've been through that same confusion for several years in a row now, so with the help of your online list archives, I found last years "card advice", which may come in handy now. I hope it helps. Originally posted Thursday, November 11, 1999: I have a few suggestions regarding cards. I highly recommend that ONE card with ONE eloquent message be designed as opposed to doing another "book of EDA messages", photos, sending many cards, etc. HGH or I cannot hand deliver piles of EDA messages/cards to Jewel. It's preferred that EDAs designate an EDA team or person to create one card and write an eloquent message to Jewel explaining how you wanted to "give something back" to her in this manner. (Or in this years case, to continue this great project.) I'm not trying to discourage anyone from writing Jewel and wishing her well (and of course anyone can do that at the PO Box and website anytime they please) but that's not the focus of this generous project, and I think it's important to keep such a huge project logistically simple, especially when you're dealing with deadlines. This is totally up to you, but in my opinion, one (hand delivered) card with a well written message, from the EDAs, will have a more personal impact than many cards and messages through regular channels. You can always do what you want in addition to the EDA Card, so please try to work together, if you decide to create an "EDA Card" for Jewel. End Nov. 11, 1999 transmission... If the EDAs wish to give Jewel one collective card, you have about six weeks to have it in my hands, if you'd like us to give it to Jewel for Christmas. If the EDAs would like us to deliver the card, it must be in my hands no later than Saturday, December 16th. If you decide to do it this way, I'll make arrangements for whoever you choose to get it to me in time. Thank you to everyone who's into this EDA/Clearwater project! Wereally appreciate it! For new folks who were not with us last year, many EDAs raised almost $5,000 for HGH/Clearwater as a Christmas gift to Jewel last winter. This money, combined with a $25,000 "Smooch For A Cure" grand prize, (which the EDAs helped Jewel win for Clearwater), led to an HGH/Clearwater site in Gualcea, Honduras being dedicated to the EDA's. You can learn more about this site at: www.clearwaterproject.org/cchonduras.html The funding for this project is being implemented in two stages. The first stage cost $30,000, which was the money mentioned above, that initiated the Gualcea water site earlier this year. The second stage will cost approximately $45,000 and will be sent sometime next year. Many of you have indicated that you want to continue this effort, as this year's Christmas present to Jewel. Your contributions are very appreciated and along with HGH fundraising efforts, will help complete this project. Those of you subscribed to JeweLink, will soon see similar instructions posted there as well, but as long as you follow Shane's EDA instructions, we'll include your donation in EDA totals. Here's Shane and here's to great success with this year's holiday project! MrBB ******************************** Hello EDAs! As we've mentioned, Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH), the non-profit organization founded by Jewel and Lenedra, is working with Netaid.org to raise funds to benefit HGH's Clearwater Project. Through this collaboration, Netaid.org and the Clearwater Project hope to raise much-needed monies that will be used to build or repair facilities that provide water to those living in extreme poverty. To kick off this holiday season fundraising effort, this Thursday, November 16th, NetAid.org will begin webcasting an exclusive Jewel solo acoustic concert, taped at a recent Mountain Winery show in Saratoga, CA. This exclusive Jewel concert will be available at http://www.netaid.org/go/jewel5. This particular concert (the second of two nights) finds Jewel relaxed and comfortable in the intimate setting of the Mountain Winery. She delivered many new songs that evening, including "Does Anyone Believe In Love," "Rosy and Mick," "Stephenville," "Violet Eyes" and the only version of "Until The Fall" ever performed live. There's plenty of unreleased older material as well, and Jewel is particularly chatty with the audience between songs. This intimate, all-acoustic concert also features a few duets with Steve Poltz, among other favorites. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to use the Internet to immediately impact the health, well-being, and education of rural Honduran communities that lack access to safe and reliable water supplies. Again, to enjoy this exclusive Jewel concert webcast, surf to http://www.netaid.org/go/jewel5 beginning this Thursday. All you need to enjoy the webcast is a RealPlayer. At the click of a button, it will automatically load and play. Also, don't forget that tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov 14th), both Jewel and Lenedra will be participating in a few online events at http://www.iVillage.com. At 3:00PM EST, both Jewel and Lenedra will be featured in an iVillage.com radio broadcast followed by another live online chat event later that evening. Jewel will answer your questions live beginning at 9:00PM EST. We look forward to seeing many of you at Jewel's concerts later this week. All it took was the question: "What inspired you to write your latest book, 'Chasing Down the Dawn'?" "I write all the time," said Jewel, who performs acoustically tonight at Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. "I have my whole life. It's like a habit or something and it happens whenever I am sitting down." Written during her recent Spirit World Tour, "Chasing Down the Dawn" (Harper Colins; $24) is a collection of prose, poetry, sketches and photographs of the people, places and events that have touched Jewel's life. "The title came from a poem that I wrote about returning to Alaska and reconnecting with how I went from being a homestead child to a star," said Jewel, who was born in Utah but raised in Alaska. "The book is about all sorts of things, from chasing cattle as a child to being at a show in Australia in front of 20,000 people." >From a young age, Jewel Kilcher began developing her gift for writing and performing. At 6, the future star began spending evenings around the dinner table singing, performing skits and telling stories with her parents. During her junior and senior years of high school, Jewel attended Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, concentrating on visual art and voice. Upon graduating in 1992, Jewel moved to San Diego, where her mother was living. In order to save money and allow Jewel to focus solely on her music career, the pair lived in separate Volkswagen vans. During that time, Jewel wrote songs by day and performed at local clubs and coffeehouses at night. Jewel's sacrifices and perseverance paid off. By 1993, she had a large enough fan base to attract the attention of record executives and land a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Her 1995 debut CD, "Pieces of You," sold more than 11 million copies and featured the hit singles "Who Will Save Your Soul," "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant for Me." The CD, which has become one of the top-selling albums ever by a female artist, also earned Jewel an American Music Award for Best New Artist and a Diamond Award for U.S. sales. After enjoying the success of her second CD, 1998's "Spirit," Jewel felt it was time for a rest. "I dropped out for a year because I was tired of it," she said. "And I was tired of the traveling. It's a typical story. You get tired and burned out, so you take time to relax and re-evaluate what you're doing." She did manage to squeeze in a film role, starring in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil." While the film from the highly acclaimed director did so-so business, Jewel received fairly positive reviews. Although writing a book satisfied part of Jewel's artistic drive, she admits the motivation for her current acoustic tour came from missing her early days as an entertainer. "I wanted to do some solo shows again," she said. "I missed doing it, so I set up little gigs that I could play the way I used to." For Jewel, that means a guitar and a great amount of creative freedom. "From the beginning, I've always played songs I've written that day or songs I've written on the spot," said Jewel. "My fans have gotten used to it. The show changes every night. There's no set list." While most artists may not be able to get away with so much improvisation, Jewel believes her honest, intimate performing style is what has made her so popular. "To me, a live audience is different every night," she said. "I think it's best to tailor the show to fit their mood. And the audience loves it when you're honest. They like it much better than when the show is fabricated." As Jewel reveals the pieces of her journey through her songs, poetry, art and prose, her life remains an open book. And like a true artist, the chance to share her heart inspires Jewel to keep chasing down her wildest dreams. "I love performing like nothing else," said Jewel. "There's nothing like being on stage and being able to feel people. I love that." JEWEL with guest Steve Polz Where: Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, 12700 Center Court Drive, Cerritos. Playing to a nearly sold-out crowd at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, the folk-pop singer delivered a nearly two-hour set offering spontaneity and several new songs, lacking the formality of a concert tour performance. With her album "Spirit" already long peaked on the charts, Jewel is playing a series of concerts in theaters as she auditions new material and allows the audience to choose the other songs she performs. The 26-year-old Rancho Santa Fe resident, whose 1995 album "Pieces of You" sold 11 million copies, making it one of the top five-selling albums of all time by a female performer, opened her Escondido concert with two new songs. She then threw things open, beginning a string of self-deprecating jokes that would continue throughout the evening. "So many hard decisions," Jewel said in a ready-for-my-close-up voice. "It's tough being a rich rock star." Playing alone in an all-acoustic show, Jewel launched into "So Close to Heaven" from her 1999 tour, then slowed down but became intense with the poignant "Little Sister." The metaphor-heavy sex satire "Race Car Driver" followed not long after, then Jewel again invited requests from the audience, who obeyed en masse. "You're trying to trick me with all the obscure ones," Jewel said in mock complaint. Soon after, longtime pal and songwriting partner Steve Poltz joined Jewel on stage, at which time Jewel began making jokes about Britney Spears, insisting she could dance and sing at the same time, as Britney does, then proved it. Jewel and Poltz sang a new song, "Valentine," so new that Poltz had to whisper the lyrics to Jewel as she sang them. The duo then offered a flubbed and funny version of the mega-hit "You Were Meant for Me," a song the two had written together long before Jewel became famous, filled with giggles and an improvised lyric mentioning the new film "Charlie's Angels," including a sung complaint by Jewel that "Cameron Diaz made me feel so fat." Jewel showed the crowd her new book of memories, "Chasing Down the Dawn," and chose a poem to read, settling in on a short and not-so-sweet childhood remembrance of her family's mean goat, whom they killed and ate, apparently with untasty results. A clean, inspired variation of "Hands" followed, illustrating perhaps her most completely realized song, then Jewel closed with "Who Will Save Your Soul," an overstretched piece of simple wisdom that despite its featherweight content, allows Jewel to show off a truly amazing vocal reach. The lullaby "Chimes" closed the encore. Jewel might dig a little too deep in some of her more poetic songs, which seem to fragment easily, but she also has a firm grasp on the wants of her intensely loyal following, and a seemingly endless potential, should she choose to continue challenging herself. Her Escondido concert showed a Jewel able to laugh and easily connect inbetween crises. Poltz opened the show with a spirited, friendly performance that included his hit "Everything About You," a trio-sung "Silver Lining" with San Diego Padres third base coach Tim Flannery and his brother, and "The Area Code Song," telling of Poltz's great dismay at being switched from 619 to 858 without his having a say.
