I repeat, COME EARLY (the store opens at 9:00 AM) No, this does not mean you will have to line up before the store opens, HOWEVER, if the event space reaches capacity, THEY WILL CLOSE OFF THE EVENT I repeat, THERE IS A CHANCE YOU WILL GET SHUT OUT OF THE EVENT. Secondly, I highly doubt (anyone who knows for sure can correct me) Jewel will be signing any copies at the event. It is a reading and a question and answer session. Much like the release of ANWA at the Virgin Megastore in NYC way back when, I expect the books to be either pre-signed or have a bookplate signature sticker on the inside. I have no idea if there is a limit to the number of books you can purchase, but in the past there have been limits of one book per person attending. I'm sure they will make the decision on-site as they see how many people show up. Apologies for any inaccuracies, but I have much experience with B&N events at my own store (Lincoln Triangle) and at events in Union Square itself. Tune In! I know many of you are very curious about accurate setlists from the solo acoustic tour last week. I haven't logged them yet, but I'm working on it this week and will post the complete accurate setlists (including Steve Poltz's setlists) by the weekend. West also took plenty of photos which will be featured on the website soon. And yes, as Michiel posted, the Mountain Winery shows were proffesionally filmed and recorded for a possible NetAid webcast later this year. We'll keep you informed on that in JeweLink as it progresses. Lately, a lot of people have also asked about hearing Jewel singing on some currently running Home Depot/Olympics commercial. I haven't heard this myself, but I can say that it must be a sound-a-like, because she has never recorded any such commercial. Also, please be sure to check the jeweljk.com calendar. There is so much activity going on that I've been updating/correcting it several times a day lately and that will likely continue over the next few weeks. I hope you all get a chance to enjoy Jewel's new book over the next few weeks. There's been countless personal questions raised on this list, over the past five years, and I can assure you that Jewel addresses a great many of them in the book. There's also quite a few vintage photos you've never seen before. Her book, A Night Without Armor, sold more than 700,000 copies, a phenomenal number for a poetry collection. Now the singer/songwriter is back with a new book — prose this time — called Chasing Down the Dawn (HarperCollins, $24). Hitting bookstores this week, Dawn is a series of musings, anecdotes and little line drawings about growing up, becoming famous, and the people who have affected her life. Jewel Kilcher, 26, worked on it last year during her Spirit World Tour as she traveled from Rome to Knoxville, Tenn. Now, while starting to promote the book, she's doing a handful of acoustic shows until Nov. 18, when she winds up in Santa Rosa, Calif. Dawn is "very different," Jewel says, calling from Saratoga, Calif., while traveling to a hotel before yet another gig. "It was odd. It was the first time I hadn't written poetry. I had 1,000 pages. Weeding it down was a real chore. It's not a conventional story." Although she led somewhat of a vagabond life, growing up in Alaska and later living out of a Volkswagen van in San Diego while trying to support herself, she says, "Traveling is really hard for me. I tend to feel unsettled." One of her anchors is her mother, Nedra Carroll. Her parents divorced when she was 6; she and her two brothers went to live with her father, Atz. When Jewel was in her junior year of high school, her mother had a small heart attack. "For some reason, I felt no fear. . . . The moment of her heart attack was frightening; yet an enduring calm came over me. I knew that Nedra would not leave me," she writes. Her mother recovered and is still very much a part of her life. "My mom worked with me on the book a lot. She was part of my editing group." Her dad, she says, "is a pretty neat guy." Although she is writing songs "all the time," she says she hasn't decided on the direction of her next album. Her first two albums, Pieces of You and Spirit, have sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. She is already thinking of her next book. "A slim book, maybe 20 poems, all really romantic, love poems. A little Valentine's book to give as a present." She could give it to her boyfriend, a cowboy named Ty Murray. Another phone rings. She chats quickly and ends the call with "I love you, baby." Was that Ty? "None of your business," she says, laughing. I havent seen too many posts on the book, and dont believe that i have seen ANY reviews whatsoever. So here I go *dont worry itll be short* ;). I thoroughly enjoyed the book, a lot more than ANWA (which i enjoyed as well). The book put me on an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. There were times where i had a huge grin on my face, times when i was in tears, times when i was hysterically laughing, times when i felt a sense of warmth and love, times where i felt awe and wonderment, and times where i felt compassion and understanding. This book achieved one major thing, an important thing that cannot be reached easily: It showed me the essence of being human. *the mystic angel* Jordana"I'd rather see the world from another angle."-Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Oct 8 22:10:57 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id WAA20433 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 8 Oct 2000 22:10:43 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200010090210.WAA20433@smoe.org> From: "Amanda Sharp" To: Jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: [EDA] sat morn show Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2000 10:05:38 -0400 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Well, i woke up at 7 am to watch and record the moning show. the calendar on jeweljk.com said 7-9 am. finally i went back to sleep. In all seriousness though, yes it is good to venture in new musical directions every now and then, but the whole African-influenced thing is tough to pull off for a white girl from Alaska. At least she's playing guitar again. Back-up singers are almost never a good idea, and this is another example of such. Jewel's strength will eventually come to the fore when she realizes her greatness lies in minimalism. As for the song, lyrically it seemed kinda vague: something about a disco ball, the subjugation of women(a la "Enter From the East"), and getting on your hands and knees before either an ego or eagle, I couldn't figure out what she was saying. I definitely need to hear this song again before passing judgment. I must admit it is moderately intriguing, but it's more arrangement than content. There are relatively few lyrics. Her vocal delivery was a departure as well, for the most part. Not sure what to think of that yet either. And she looked fine(not tawdry as someone else's post recently implied, would you people be happy if she started wearing burlap sacks perhaps), not an offensive amount of make-up as in the past. And the red dress was pretty, but again, a little too Tina Turner and her hair a little too Farrah Fawcett. But her appearance is of little importance although it is often overanalyzed here. No one seems to know what the song was yet. For some reason she(Atlantic Records I prob'ly should say) had Letterman promore the Joy CD along with her new book. She didn't get to talk, just the quick performance. Which, if you ask me, makes little sense. She's not promoting an album, she's promoting her book. Why not just skip the song altogether and do an interview AS AN AUTHOR, if she expects to be taken seriously as one? Seems kinda counterproductive to perform a song with no album. And the book signing tomorrow was not mentioned either. Well, that's my take on things. Moderately intriguing song, didn't love it, but at least it's different. And again, would've rather heard her talk about her writing. Chasing Down the Dawn, Jewel's follow-up to her bestselling book of poetry A Night Without Armor, details the childhood of a girl from Alaska who would become a pop superstar and reveals through stories, journal entries, poems, and sketches the endless creativity of an artistic mind. As multifaceted as its author is multitalented, Chasing Down the Dawn covers a lot of ground. It is organized loosely into chapters, some passages covering Jewel's early life. Jewel vividly describes growing up in the outdoors: riding horses and enjoying what nature had to offer in the breathtaking Alaskan landscape. A natural performer, Jewel also recounts her earliest gigs, traveling to remote villages in Alaska's northern interior to perform with her parents. Over the course of the narrative it becomes clear Jewel's parents were a constant source of support and encouragement for her creative aspirations. Interspersed between sections that deal with Jewel's upbringing, family, and friends are passages that touch on her current fame and status as a pop superstar. In journal entries, Jewel offers a glimpse into life on the road: waking up unsure of what city she is in, signing autographs, performing onstage, worrying about and treating voice problems, and soaking up every minute of downtime. In poems, Jewel examines the life she has chosen and reflects on her own identity, which seems a dual identity at times. Drawings that smack of curiosity and self-awareness touch upon themes both serious and lighthearted. Chasing Down the Dawn will strike a chord with younger fans anxious to hear more of this gifted artist's life story and her journey to fame. But it will also resonate with more mature readers as a chronicle of an artist's development and her pursuit of self-discovery. And Jewel's anecdotes about other celebrities she has met or performed with are sure to please everyone. There's a lot of Alaska in it, you transport yourself to this place in your mind if you have a good inmagination, there's a little of Ty there too, she's completely in love with him. A lot of insight to the cowboy life, even though I'm an animal's right activist, I totally respect that profession and culture(though I rather take some really bad criminals from an institution and chase, rope, castrate and mark them with fire hot steel instead of defenseless creatures..) I'm not a veggeterian and I do understand the need to kill animals in order to preserve the food chain, as long as it is done in a painless way with no abuse, though I wouldn't have the heart to kill anything ,even if my own surviving were at stake, but thank God I'm not in that situation :) The book has no chronological order to it, you jump from Alaska to Kuala Limpur in 2 pages, from her being a teenager to her being 26 shooting some targets with Ty. A lot about how her parents divorce affected her and her sibblings and her relationship with her father through the years. Anyone will certainly enjoy this book and the way it was put together it's marvelous, credit to the editor and publishers too. This morning I caught her appearance in the "Early Show" on CBS and she sang a beautiful song, very Jazzy and smooth in that way, then the anchor started throwing questions at her , and it seemed to me that she was almost uncomfortable with the questions, since right now seems she hasn't decided wich direction to take with her career and most of the questions were about what is she doing and what does she plan on doing, it seemed she doesn't have the answers to those questions yet. It's ok, I guess she will have them soon. In the meantime I just enjoy her writing and her singing , she is a very amazing person and most of all she is just a person..she doesn't have to have the answers all the time , it's better for me that she's honest than look or sound fake with all of the rest of her life planned out. Makes her more real than the other artists out there, I like that. take care Lucky Angel. To: jewel-news@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey everyone. Wow, I haven't posted in awhile but I just wanted to comment on the few things! First, I'm glad Jewel is back these days. I've missed seeing her on TV and everything. I got Jewel's book on October 3rd at my doorstep. It was amazing, I dove right into and read through it till about 2:00 AM that night. It was soothing, yet honest. I could hear each word being spoken in her voice, and I fell asleep with the book in my bed. Luckily, it didn't get wrinkled! It was just like being read a bedtime story and with each one I felt like I was taken to a foreign place because the descriptions were so clear. I was just so intrigued by it! She shocks me everytime, and even the fact of that stuns me. I also watched Letterman, hm..I've listened to that new song quite a few times. It's pretty good, definately not one of her best because it was a bit confusing and I couldn't really feel her through soul through her voice like I could in most of her other songs, but it's definately not bad. I like the fact that she's still doing new things. Now the main focus of this is the book reading. I wish it would've been longer, since I spent practically the whole day waiting for it to start and it was only like a half hour long, but I still enjoyed it anyway. I got there around 10:30 and had 3rd row center seats. It was almost silent when I arrived. Everyone was hiding their tired faces behind books and magazines like turtles slowly curling up into their shells. As more people arrived, they began to open up more causing the silence to slowly diminish and make room for the growing excitement. She rooted herself to the small stage abling herself to absorb the emotions of the crowd. She looked beautiful as always, looking like a delicate rose dressed in red. She read from her book and afterwards answered some questions. She really connected with the audience and spoke to a few briefly from their seats. She was both serious and funny, which kept it entertaining. Besides seeing Jewel, I got to meet some new people there like I did at the CD signing, if any of you are reading this right now I'd like to say hi and hope you had fun too! The best part of the day was at the end, as most things are! It was worth the wait. I got to meet her, even if it was only for half a second that she looked into my eyes and said to everyone who was waiting there "How are you guys?" "Thanks for coming", and leaped into her limo. Not many people knew about that little exit so we got pictures of her and she didn't run right through us. We waved goodbye to Jewel as her limo tumbled down the street, growing smaller as a rock being carried through a winding stream, insignificant amongst the maze of many tall buildings. -Jade*Tiny Angel* From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Oct 8 22:16:55 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id WAA20838 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 8 Oct 2000 22:14:52 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200010090214.WAA20838@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 18:47:05 +0800 To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: Barry Howarth Subject: Jewel-News: [EDA] "Serving the Ego" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi Angels, "Serving the Ego"- A lovely song but with bite. Jewel loves irony and this one is loaded with it. Not picking up on the irony has often meant people misunderstand Jewel and her sense of humour: I'm sure there will be those who see this song as urging women to be subservient to the great male ego, as the Bible teaches. Of course, she means the very opposite. This song also works on multiple levels. This is something I have noticed Jewel experimenting with more over the past couple of years: the beginning of "Hands", "Do You" (another song loaded with irony), "Stephenville" (there's irony there too) and now "Serve the Ego". At one level it's a song about relationships and women's attitude to men- don't be subservient to the man, don't just satisfy his pleasure, don't be what you think he wants you to be. This is a pretty common theme in Jewel's songs and it makes me think that Jewel herself has a great deal of difficulty in her own life taking this advice: maybe it's a constant struggle she has against an inclination to be dependent and to want to please her man. But then she has to tell herself, "Everything's temporary given enough time" (Stephenville) and he'll soon be "yesterday's lover". This really saddens me - and may explain the sad look she so often has in her pictures/posters - as it makes it very hard for her to find the lasting happiness of a stable relationship that I feel she seeks. I'll be interested to read "Chasing Down the Dawn" to see if this theme appears. So the song offers general advice but has a personal side as well. Then there is the more philosophical level: don't serve the ego, don't be subservient to selfishness, cast off the ego as "yesterday's lover". This is another common thread in Jewel's writing and, of course, is a common theme of most religious, ethical and philosophical traditions, but one which needs reiterating in our society where we are subject to constant brainwashing through the commercial media that that greed is good, selfishness is a virtue. Selfishness is, in fact, the root of all evil. So, I think "Serving the Ego" is a really great new song. It's musically experimental for Jewel too, but then she's always experimenting. And I thought she looked great, though the guitar didn't really go with the beautiful dress. She may have been better to just sing without the guitar. How she looks is, I think, integral to the total performance and, therefore, a proper topic of discussion. I'm sure Jewel dresses for effect when she's performing. Remember the very short mini-skirt she wore singing "Hands" on one TV show? Was she making a statement that you can be sexy and spiritual at the same time? I think so. Susana The Azorean Angel __________________________________ Jewel Shines The luminous folk star dazzled the audience at Villa Montalvo's Mountain Winery By Sarah Quelland Because Villa Montalvo in Saratoga is known as an artists' retreat, visiting performers (at both Montalvo and its sister stage, the Mountain Winery) are granted greater artistic license than they are at more traditional venues. Often, appearances are special bookings unrelated to regular promotional tours, and although Jewel does have a new book of poetry coming out soon (Chasing Down the Dawn), her concert Sept. 27 at the Mountain Winery seemed more like a fun break from routine than just another gig. Rather than sticking to any rigid set list, the 26-year-old modern folk-pop star took the opportunity at this intimate gathering to share as many stories as songs, and she limited the number of commercial hits she played in favor of gems from her vast repertoire of unrecorded material. Material Girl With two nights (Sept. 26-27) lined up at the outdoor venue, Jewel had some downtime in the Bay Area. "I went shopping," she announced, showing off the body-hugging blue denim outfit and new shoes she was wearing. Then, quickly switching subjects, she revealed, "I've never been one of those people that likes taking pictures." Because songs from her two multiplatinum albums (Pieces of You and Spirit) tend toward more serious subjects, it was exciting to find her so conversational, lighthearted and funny. Making the appreciative audience laugh, she said that when prepping for a photo shoot she lies about her size. "What size is Ashley Judd?" she asks the stylist. "I'm that size, pretty much, basically, kind of." Jewel's a much better role model than the Britney Spears and Christina Aguileras of the world. Her girlish image and naive innocence are more down-to-earth, wholesome and attainable than those of the pop superteens, and her healthy weight and imperfect teeth are part of her friendly, girl-next-door appeal. But she seems dogged by people determined to correct her "flaws." She was surprised when an ad she did for Tommy Hilfiger came out. "He leaves my love handles and straightened my teeth!" she exclaimed: "I can't believe he did it--fucker!" She also talked about a fan in New York who approached her because her boss, a cosmetic dental surgeon, really wanted to fix Jewel's teeth. Which, Jewel explained to the Winery crowd, meant, "I'm not just a country hick, I'm a country hick with bad teeth." But, she said with a smile, "I'm not gonna fix my teeth yet." Amazing Grace Jewel's poetic grace and presence were enchanting whether she was speaking or singing, and the night had the feel of an episode of VH-1's Storytellers (the performance was being recorded for some type of webcast). In between anecdotes, Jewel sang several songs from Pieces of You, including "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "Little Sister," along with selections from Spirit: "Deep Water," "What's Simple Is True" and "Innocence Maintained." Jewel's former flame Steve Poltz, who opened the show, joined her onstage during her set for a flirty duet on "You Were Meant for Me," along with songs from his own album, One Left Shoe ("Silver Lining" and "I Thought I Saw You Last Night"). Poltz co-wrote the hit "You Were Meant for Me" and is featured in the video, and Jewel asserted "We write really good songs together. He's the only one I can write songs with." The whole night had a spontaneous quality. During "Don't," Jewel paused. "Uh oh," she said, losing her place and appealing to the audience to help her out with the lyrics. She took requests as well (including the cute "Cold Song"), but when asked to sing "Carnivore" she had to decline. "You know, I almost learned 'Carnivore,' but I didn't. I've been teaching myself my own songs backstage." With more than 100 original songs to choose from, Jewel also performed special songs that aren't available on her albums, such as "Gray Matter," "Too Darn Hot," "Sometimes It Be That Way" and "Race Car Driver," along with some lovely material that sounded new. Everyday Angel Thanks to her ethereal vocals, Jewel can sound like a musical angel with an acoustic guitar rather than a harp for her instrument. The most profound moment of the evening came when she quietly told the audience, "This is a song I don't play ever. I wrote this for my best friend in the whole world. She died about a year ago with cancer." Her voice was exquisite as she remembered her friend's "violet eyes" and mourned, "Time can seem as fragile as a looking glass." Her voice trembled with emotion as she sang, "If I could write a postcard to you and know that somehow it could get through/I don't know if I could express this aching in my chest/I guess I'll always miss you." One of this Alaska native's most distinctive traits is her ability to yodel. It's a skill that never fails to win over an audience, and one that every audience demands. After checking her watch and realizing she was running out of time--the Mountain Winery has a strict curfew--she assured the crowd, "I'm gonna yodel," before dazzling her fans with a traditional song called "Chime Bells." http://www.metroactive.com:80/metro/jewel-0040.html --WebTV-Mail-3078-1510 X-URL-Title: MetroActive Music | Jewel Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit http://www.metroactive.com:80/metro/jewel-0040.html --WebTV-Mail-3078-1510-- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Oct 9 16:19:03 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id QAA09860 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 9 Oct 2000 16:18:03 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mail.rdc1.ct.home.com (imail@ha1.rdc1.ct.home.com [24.2.0.66]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with ESMTP id QAA09637; Mon, 9 Oct 2000 16:14:05 -0400 (EDT) Received: from jeweljk.com ([24.8.100.72]) by mail.rdc1.ct.home.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.00 201-229-121) with ESMTP id <20001009201356.HEKK24491.mail.rdc1.ct.home.com@jeweljk.com>; Mon, 9 Oct 2000 13:13:56 -0700 Message-ID: <39E22704.1AB1063D@jeweljk.com> Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 16:13:55 -0400 From: MrBB Reply-To: alan@jeweljk.com Organization: Future Folklore X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61C-CCK-MCD AtHome0407 (Macintosh; U; PPC) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org, ducksoup@quackquack.net, aBershaw@aol.com Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB: All the recent setlists available now! To: "'Jewel list'" Subject: Jewel-News: [EDA] Jewel in NEW book! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Just got back from the local bookstore, and saw that there are 2 pages about Jewel in a new book called Face Forward, by Kevin Aucoin. One page is a full-sized (approx. 11x14) color photo of her, close-up of her face (great shot!), and the other page contains text and a smaller b/w photo of her (full body). The book is very good quality and hardbound with thick pages. Other celebrities in it include Julianne Moore, Christina Ricci, Wynona Rider, and many others. I'm not sure if it's worth the $29.95 cover price, but for the die hard fan you may want to check it out. At least go to your book store and find a copy to browse through it. I wish there was someway I could just get the pages with Jewel on them...haha. Derrick PS...some of you veteran EDA's may remember another book called Making Faces, also by Kevin, that Jewel appeared in back in 1997 I think it was. That was another awesome photo of her as well, yet it went almost unmentioned on the list, as has this one. No, contrary to gossip and tabloid rags, Jewel is not engaged. #2. I'm happy to be bombarded by email inquiring about how best to continue the EDA/HGH/Clearwater project, started last year! Your efforts culminated in the opportunity to begin building a Clearwater Project location to assist the people of Gualsea, Honduras. (Honduras is on the East side of Guatamala, which is just South of Mexico. This specific location was funded through generous EDA donations combined with your efforts helping Jewel win the "Smooch For A Cure" $25,000 prize for Clearwater Project.) I'm sure Clearwater/HGH/Jewel would all be thrilled to have EDA support of this location continue and I'd be honored to check on it for you. Please give me a few days. I'll talk to Shane Kilcher and find out how best to do it this year. Good timing too! We'll be educating you about the Gualsea location very soon. Thanks for all the interest in this! Jewel says: Hi! (with a stuffy nose) Digital Dish Diva says: Jewel, it's great to meet you! Thank you for joining your fans today to talk about your new book, "Chasing Down the Dan: Life Stories." Digital Dish Diva says: Well, I know you are sick. Thanks for being with us. Digital Dish Diva says: Let's start with the audience questions. Digital Dish Diva says: distortionchris Asks: Is your new book about you or is it another poetry book? I have read your first book many times. Jewel says: It's about me. I guess my poetry book was too, but it's not poetry. Digital Dish Diva says: Guest_heather Asks: What encouraged you to write "Chasing Down the Dawn"? Jewel says: A couple reasons. One is that I've been really interested in short stories and prose and enjoyed writing in that format. The second thing was because the hardest part in my job is the distortion that occurs through media. And I enjoy writing books so I can more accurately portray aspects in my life. Digital Dish Diva says: daniboy says: Do you feel overexposed at all when you write a book? Jewel says: No, there's plenty I don't put in the book. (laughs) And I enjoy being honest. I feel less endangered the more honest I am. Digital Dish Diva says: Liserd Asks: Jewel, did you have any help writing the book? Or are you just naturally gifted in this area as well as music? Jewel says: Oh naturally brilliant. (laughs) I wrote the book by myself and a lot of friends helped me by reading it. I had one friend that helped me a lot by typing it all up because I wrote it in longhand. Digital Dish Diva says: everydayangel_0 Asks: I found the Eskimo ice cream story very funny! Is that the weirdest thing you have ever eaten? Jewel says: I think when you grow up in Alaska you grow up eating some weird things. Some gross things like cow tongue and heart. Like barbecued moose legs. Digital Dish Diva says: For those who don't know the Eskimo ice cream story, can you tell us about it? Jewel says: It's kind of a long story, it might be easier for you to buy the book, but in short, when I was a young child, we toured Eskimo villages performing and one village offered my ice cream that I excited agreed to, only to find out that it was frozen berries, snow, and seal oil. With sugar. Digital Dish Diva says: How was it? Jewel says: It was as bad as it sounds. Digital Dish Diva says: Guest_Jill Asks: In the book, you mention a song that you hated but the record company thought could be a popular single. What song was it? Jewel says: It's called "Tough Girl." I don't think it's out anymore. Digital Dish Diva says: James_Blue_Eyes_27 says: Hi, Jewel, with your rise in stardom, have your inspirations changed with your change in lifestyle and have they affected your creatively in any way? Jewel says: No, I'd say the same things inspire me. The change I have noticed is how to deal with fame. The only time I got uncomfortable with my job was when I feared what inspired me went against what it takes to do my job. Like the more I began to feel my job was just about a popularity contest and running for home coming queen every year, the more I felt out of place because I've always loved song writing and being around people. I got disillusioned at some point until I realized it doesn't have to be a popularity contest. Digital Dish Diva says: Learn more about Jewel at her website at Jeweljk.com Digital Dish Diva says: Swim27 says: Do you adapt a different mode of discipline when writing prose, poetry or music, how can you steer a poem to be a poem and not become a song, do you control this, or just let it free itself? Jewel says: They do tend to come very different. It's sort of like each different way of writing is like a different vehicle that takes you to the same place. I can't really turn a poem into a song and keep the integrity. Although they do sometimes swap like "Foolish Games" was a poem that I wrote when I was 16 and 2 years later became a song. Digital Dish Diva says: annoying_menace says: Jewel, did you enjoy making your book as if you would enjoy making an album? Jewel says: I was really ready to make this book. I didn't want to make a record, I was glad to have a break from music. I like writing because it's quiet and my personality, like my humor, can come across in my writing. Also my thought process can come across, how I view the world. I really enjoyed that. Digital Dish Diva says: babiesbreath says: Did you family express concern about them being portrayed in your book? Jewel says: No, my family didn't. None of it was a shock to them, they all read the book before it came out. I wasn't pulling any punches. I had their blessing. Digital Dish Diva says: Guest_Basho Asks: Thus far in your life, what would you cite as the most positive achievement, both personally and publicly? Jewel says: Professionally I'm very proud that I've been able to remain creative in a fairly uncreative business. And I'm really grateful and thankful for the success I've had. And personally, there's a couple things. I'm really proud of my health, I've gotten a lot healthier with my kidneys. I'm able to tour more without worrying about getting sick. Digital Dish Diva says: Trojan8Horse Asks: Jewel you are a very earthy open spaces kind of person. Is it difficult to put yourself in a situation of big crowds and big city environments? Jewel says: At first it really was. When I first moved from Alaska it was like culture shock. When I visit New York, it was really hard for me, but I love it! As long as I can get away, I enjoy it. The city is definitely fun! Digital Dish Diva says: TrealGangstaD says: Why did you title your book "Chasing Down the Dawn"? Jewel says: It was hard to find a title for this one. In that poem really summed up the whole conflict of the book which is missing Alaska, fame, and how do you reconcile. The last line of the poem is "I will return to you Alaska, but for now, I'm chasing down an endless dawn." That seemed to summarize the quest for truth and beauty that permeates the book. Digital Dish Diva says: BenInSF Asks: Jewel, I really enjoyed your performance in "Ride With The Devil." Do you have any plans to do more film work? Jewel says: I've been looking at scripts. It's hard to find really great well-written scripts that haven't been offered to another great actress. I would like to continue in film. Digital Dish Diva says: peaches says: Hi Jewel. Do you mind doing press? You were great on "The View." Were you upset by something on the Saturday morning show? Jewel says: I do enjoy press. But early in the morning-no. By the time the Saturday Morning show came around I had been through a whole week of press and about an hour to eat a day. I was just disappointed that the guy didn't know anything about my book. I try and be very professional and I was just disappointed. I am more generous when I'm not tired. (laughs) It was fun though! Digital Dish Diva says: Guest_Jill: Were you worried about the entire public reading about your relationship with your father? How are you able to be so honest when you know thousands will read your thoughts? Jewel says: Well I was glad to put that in because I'm proud of what we've been able to do together with it. I'm proud of my dad's growth and my own. And I'd rather kids know that it does happen to whatever degree. I didn't bring it up to focus on abuse, but more to know that you can get over these things. I think that's important because I have friends that are stunted because of it. I want children to know that you can get through and over it and be comforted. Digital Dish Diva says: AngelLauren Asks: I loved hearing your new songs on David Letterman etc. Does this mean you are writing new material for an album? Jewel says: I have been writing. I don't know what will end up on a record and what won't, but I've been enjoying writing. Digital Dish Diva says: Avianscooby says: Jewel, do you have any future plans on writing any more books? Jewel says: I'd like to write a novella. I'm also interested in doing a children's book, but I'm not planning anything right now. Digital Dish Diva says: Tonight's MSN Live event is sponsored by Pure Oxygen. Entertaining, informing and empowering women to do great things. Find out more at http://www.oxygen.com/pureoxygen/ Digital Dish Diva says: mxpxpxpixie says: What is the ultimate thing that keeps you going when times get tough? Jewel says: Fear of suicide. (laughs) No, I don't want to kill myself. I just have to move forward. My mom keeps me going and life and the unknown keeps me going. Also my love of service keeps me out there when I would quit otherwise. Digital Dish Diva says: What really cheers you up or thrills you completely? Jewel says: Phone calls from my boyfriend. Riding and of course writing. Tons of things, I don't think I can begin to list them. Digital Dish Diva says: pacer says: How many horses do you own? Jewel says: I own 1 in Alaska named Clearwater and I have one in San Diego named Chance. And a cowboy named Gary McDaniels recently gave me a colt because he said that where he's from if you want to give something to someone that means something, you give them a horse. (laughs) And that one is in Texas. Digital Dish Diva says: corabeth1 says: What is your favorite breed of horse? Jewel says: I'd have to say quarter horse. Digital Dish Diva says: thegraces Asks: Jewel, how did you learn to write? Have you ever taken any writing classes or have you learned through reading and trial and error? Jewel says: I think I've just learned through reading and over time. I always got good grades in writing in school. I was really bad in spelling and was sloppy and I hate rewrites. I had a teacher in 5th grade that wasn't a taskmaster, even the writing style was how to brainstorm with all these little rules. He let me not do it because he saw I lost creative interest of it, and I think that really effected my love of it. To me it's just a creation of story telling and I'm glad I didn't have teachers that didn't nit-pick me to death. Digital Dish Diva says: White11 says: Jewel, your eyes speak of an old soul, do you think you are? Jewel says: How very esoteric. That's a hard question to answer. I have been comforted often by knowing that even in the moments I feel most alone, that there is a knowing in me that I can rely on. So if that's an old soul or not, I don't know. Digital Dish Diva says: shreidan07 says: Jewel, What was your favorite bedtime story or song when you were a little girl? Jewel says: My record "Spirit" has a hidden track with my mom and I singing a lullaby "Little Bird" and it's one of my favorites. Digital Dish Diva says: peru says: I am very interested in Alaska. What is it like to have half a year of light and then darkness? Does it affect you emotionally? Jewel says: It does effect you emotionally. Up there they have a thing called cabin fever. People definitely get stir crazy as well as very manic in the summer months. Digital Dish Diva says: Guest_taylor Asks: How did you like Interlochen? Jewel says: I enjoyed Interlochen. I learned a lot there, I found boarding school hard. I haven't had any friends my own age my whole life and then I was suddenly living with a lot and it was hard. I think musically I grew a lot there. Digital Dish Diva says: lookingintomovealong says: What does she feel is the most empowering thing of her home Alaska? Jewel says: A friend of mine calls nature "Altered God" and I think a lot can be learned from that. I think it gave me independence and familiarity with common sense and a tremendous respect and awe in the beauty of the world. Jewel says: That is a very unaffected and unusual outlook on life especially as I travel. Digital Dish Diva says: wanabehayden says: Favorite childhood memory? Digital Dish Diva says: And is it in the book? Jewel says: I have a lot of them. A lot of them are in the book, I don't think I could pick one. I loved being in the mountains alone with my horse. I like singing in bar rooms and watching drunks nurse their beers. There's a lot of it I enjoyed. Digital Dish Diva says: Fonso2 Asks: Do you have any funny quarks in your writing process? For instance, do you have to sit in a certain chair or in front of a certain painting for inspiration? Jewel says: Boy if I did, I'd never write! I'm never in the same spot! I'm very fortunate to be able to write anywhere at anytime. I love writing and it's not something I have to supplicate like the Greeks did with their Gods. A lot of writing was done at 4 in the morning after shows. It can happen anywhere. Digital Dish Diva says: Jewel, we are going to close this chat with a final question from Jfan1 who says: You seem like a very romantic person who enjoys everything in her life. I would like to know what is your favorite time of day and why? Jewel says: I don't know if I have a favorite time of day. Of course morning and evenings are always lovely. I do have favorite moments in the day, it's nothing planned, just when the light settles in a room a certain way, or a feeling. I many different things. I think it's those times that life romances and is poetry. Those little pieces. Digital Dish Diva says: Jewel, thank you for joining us tonight on MSN Live and thank you for sharing yourself in "Chasing Down the Dawn." Jewel says: I enjoyed being able to talk with everyone! Shane asked that I forward this message along to you. _______________________________________ Well, it's getting to be that time of year again. Snow is falling nearly everywhere except sunny California, Christmas carols are being played in more and more elevators across America, and Mr.BB tells me that the EDA's are writing in, wondering what to do for this year's Christmas project. I know Jewel and Lenedra were absolutely honored by your interest and participation in the Clearwater Project last year. The fact that so many people came together to help bring their vision into reality was truly touching. I've been giving them presents my entire life (and sometimes forgetting entirely, I admit) and can truly say that they have never recieved a greater or more thoughtfull gift from anyone! The Clearwater Project in Gualsea, Honduras, is progressing at an amazing pace. The Community has been going through its education process and work has actually begun digging the trenches for the pipes. You can actually see some pictures of Gualsea in the new slide show at: http://www.clearwaterproject.com/gasshow.html I know that the project in Gualsea is only halfway funded and we are going to be fundraising soon to help finish the project. We are working out the details now, but I think it would be the perfect present to Jewel if we could raise more money for this project. I'll get back to you soon with details on how we can do this together and keep track of EDA contributions. Thank you! Shane Kilcher _______________________________________ OK. So, please hang in there and we'll get back to you soon. In the meantime, please educate yourself about Clearwater. The web site has just gone through a major overhaul and it's a whole new site now! Please take a look at www.clearwaterproject.com. We're really happy with the new look and many new features, including a much more detailed look at the Gualsea watersite, dedicated to the EDAs, and brought to reality through your efforts. Cheers! For those unfamiliar with this program, each night Bill Maher hosts a wildly diverse panel of four from the worlds of politics, media, literature, and entertainment. Through heated debates instigated by Maher, guests discuss various opinions about the hottest issues of the day. Often called the best talk show on television, "Politically Incorrect" is the winner of four Cable Ace Awards for Best Entertainment Host and Best Talk Show and has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards. Jewel will be a "Politically Incorrect" panelist on the Tuesday, November 8th installment of this program. It broadcasts on the ABC Network. Check local listings for times and availability in your area. The following evening, Wednesday, November 9th, Jewel will be participating in a special AOL event in conjunction with Helping.org. Helping Hands charity campaign has teamed up with In Style and eBay to kick off the holiday giving season with an online offering -- auction-style -- featuring artwork from numerous celebrities who are lending "a hand" in the form of their paintings, drawings, photographs and other creative renditions on the helping hand theme. Jewel has done two. One hundred percent of the proceeds from Jewel's artwork will go to HGH's Clearwater Project. Starting November 9, these "handiworks" will be showcased in a special online catalog on Shop@AOL (www.aol.com/shopping and AOL Keyword: Helping Hands), which offers links to bid on the artwork as well as one-click access to online giving and volunteer opportunities through Helping.org. In addition, Jewel will also participate in another live online chat that evening, at the AOL.com web site. Jewel will begin answering your questions at 7:00pm PST. Also, JMerch and Comcast Cable are proud to announce that out of 2500 entries recieved during the August sweeps and the TV showing of "Jewel: A Life Uncommon," the grand prize winner of the Taylor Jewel Signature Model Guitar is Sharon Brooks of Maryland. Congratulations Sharon! That's it for today. Please check the jeweljk.com calendar for many more previously mentioned upcoming events and TV programs featuring Jewel. Jewel was the last video, it just went off, I am sure they will rerun it later tonite. It was hilarious! She had some pretty funny quotes up there, and they of course had quotes about her teeth, funny but kinda mean, and some about her poetry, also funny but mean at the same time. It's good though, you all should try and watch it. GinaEastAngel
