Your questions today expand a bit on the questions answered in our last edition. Alie Campbell asks: Hello, I was just wondering whether managing your daughter has had any effect on the way you handle certain situations, and whether or not you have ever gotten in a serious fight about a decision of yours concerning her career? Also curious about this aspect was Thomas Miles, who asks: Dear Lenedra, I was wondering... How has your personal relationship with Jewel affected your being her manager? Have you ever had a conflict between how you would advise Jewel as her mother versus how you would advise her as her manager? Lenedra replies: How do we handle disagreements, if there are any? We do not always see eye-to-eye. We are both creative people and in many ways have very different views and approaches. However, we have a great respect for one another's opinions and intuition, and an agreement to hear each other out. Jewel has had to consciously avoid the tendency of the child to automatically give in to the opinion of the parent. She often has information and a view that is vital to my role as manager. (And mother.) The moments most likely to get crunchy are when we are tired, hungry and pressed with business decisions. We've developed a language, sort of a short hand, which gets us through. One of us may say (sometimes rather tersely) "Not now, I can't go there!" We may indulge in a little snarl riff in which we make growling noises. This always makes us laugh and back off. At such times we usually agree to visit the matter later. Other times we simply have to acknowledge that one or both of us is on edge, muster up good manners, and get through the list or situation. There are times when we feel offended or hurt by the other. Our agreement in such cases is first to trust that the other will care about it and to each bring respect and interest to the situation. Second, the one who is offended or hurt is primarily responsible for bringing it up and the other for listening thoroughly and responding thoughtfully. Both of us agree to assess our own reactions and feelings and not the other's. We both try to bring as much self-honesty to the situation as we can. Sometimes we simply stop everything and have a mother-daughter snuggle without another word. These methods get us through tension and disagreement. -Lenedra **************************************** Hi, MrBB here again. One of my favorite things about the Internet is that it so easily facilitates sharing passions about music with many friends. From the inception of Jewel's web site, this was an aspect that we wanted to include. Many of you might wonder what other artists Jewel, Lenedra and various people on the J-Team enjoy and recommend. This is why we created our "guest artist" pages, where we can turn you on to other artists and musicians that we feel are deserving of your attention. This area of jeweljk.com continues to grow and we hope it becomes a great resource for you to discover other artists that you can also feel passionate about. You'll find in-depth looks at artists we feel very fortunate to have experienced. Some have busted in on the big time and others are quiet secrets. One thing they all have in common is that they are all gifted with artistry and soul. At our "guest artist" pages, you can educate yourself, listen to audio files and find links to a lot more information about the artists. Previous features are archived for your reference. You'll currently find information about Jewel's old friend and frequent songwriting collaborator Steve Poltz, as well as highly recommended artists such as Joy Eden Harrison, Cowboy Junkies, Unspoken Word and John Harrelson. Jewel descends from a long line of performing and songwriting talent and at the "guest artist" pages, you can also enjoy learning about some of the music from the previous generation of the Kilcher Family, such as Jewel's Aunt Mossy Kilcher. More great features are planned for the future. Which brings us to our newest guest artist and one we feel honored to include: Rickie Lee Jones. Since her 1979 debut album, Rickie Lee Jones continues to take her music to new places. Not one to rest on a rock-solid foundation of songs, like "Chuck E's In Love" or her collaboration with Dr. John on "Makin' Whoopie," she has produced a bold body of work that seduces both critics and fans alike with its invention and honesty. Although a powerful poet and talented musician, she is perhaps first and foremost an unforgettable and uniquely expressive voice. We invite you to journey over to our newest "guest artist" feature at jeweljk.com to listen and educate yourself. Even those of you who've been hip to Rickie Lee for a long time will enjoy the fairly extensive bio here and the links to live concert recordings. Few musicians or songwriters have the ability to produce consistently outstanding albums for over 20 years, but Rickie Lee Jones is unquestionably one. We hope you enjoy all our new jeweljk.com content. It has been a lot of hard work, but I am almost ready to start distributing the tape. However, I only have ten branches for the tape tree. I've never tried to tree a tape before, but I have a feeling that many of you will want a copy of this tape. THerefore, I will most likely need more branches (so that I do not overwhelm the people who have agreed to make copies for people). So if anyone is interested in being a branch please email me privately. I need people that will be able to send me a blank as soon as possible. In the meantime, check back for a post from me on Friday in which I will release the set list. I will also begin treeing the tape then. Please be patient with me as I have never tried anything like this before. And please do not email me yet unless you want to be a branch (which means that you agree to make copies for other people). Thanks for your support. And don't forget to check back on Friday!!! When Jewel broke big with her debut album, "Pieces of You," everyone heard the story of this Alaska native who lived the starving artist lifestyle -- making a home in her van before being discovered busking in a coffeehouse. Her angelic appearance, natural charm, and easy rapport with audiences only continued to win her fans and fame. Jewel even released a book, "Night Without Armor," a collection of poetry that received mixed reviews from the critics. Jewel is one of the highlights of this evening's set of performances with other talent, including Juice Newton, at Oaks/Blenheim Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, Ortega Highway and Antonio parkway, San Juan Capistrano. Down So Long Down Your In Cleveland Today-I know its an oldie but it was the first time I heard it and it sounds a bit like a Dylan song Everybody Needs Someone Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul Encore--> Don't -forgot the lyrics and so borrowed a POY booklet from a guy up front Chime Bells -(slow to start, fast finish and acapella) Jewel talks about how when she was 6 years old, she would sing songs with her dad while in lieterhosan and one of the songs had a line about kissing and she'd feel embarassed to say the words and shy away from the mic. Then she said "Hello Cleveland" whacked herself on the head with her hand and said to herself "no, no, no" and starts the song I saw and EDA in the crowd that was recording the show on tape(Larry?) and maybe whoever it was could tree the show since even though its got that "spirit tour" vibe (Poltz, Pettibone, Steve George, Brady, and Tony, band for the tour) they had some fun with the same old songs and everybody loved the show. BTW, i saw that some people had camcorders, were any of you one of the people? if so, i would like to trade ... my collection is pretty good so maybe you could find something you liked. She told us to say hi to Ty for her at the beginning. anyway, it started off with NEAR YOU ALWAYS (which she messed up on!) and then DEEP WATER, WHAT'S SIMPLE IS TRUE, HANDS (did "If i could tell the world just one thing, it would be, that's i'm happy to be in orange county..." ), YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME (jewel imitatates steve from the video and later steve and jewel sing the chorus together.. i wish i had brought a camera or camcorder!), LIFE UNCOMMON (jewel asks steve to give him a "G" but he gives her an "H" instead, he corrects it and she sings...) and FOOLISH GAMES. Then she got into the acoustic part and said she was gonna sing some new songs, which were STEPHENVI LLE(she forgot the words and had to think about it!, SOME NEW SONG (she says it brand new, but you know how she always says that. but truthfully, i've never heard it. the chorus was: Do you remember when we were younger [and better words were said?] Making up was your favorite part Well, I ain't young no more And I'm sorry I can not mend a broken heart). Then the band came out and she did the electric guitar/rock stuff. DOWN SO LONG , DOWN (i think she messed up a bit in this too...), YOU'RE IN CLEVELAND TODAY, EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEONE SOMETIME, LMJLMA (her and steve did some cute dancing stuff. again, i wish i had brought a camcorder! ), WWSYS(she did the kitty cat bit and the scatting thing with Doug). She came back out for an encore. She sang DON'T (and didn't remember the words and like Alex said, she borrowed the POY cover from somebody..she still skipped a whole verse) and CHIME BELLS (i loved the way she sang this ... another reason why i love jewel. she changes the way she sings the songs a lot) The crowd was nice ... there wasn't any wierd stuff going on. i was closer than when i watched her at Irvine Meadows last year except for the end when i was about 10 yards from her. anyhoo, i was still in a good place. BTW, i was able to record a cassette tape of the concert. it's pretty good quality. you can hear me talking a bit in between songs, but it doesn't get in the way. i'd say it was a 7 or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best and i'm willing to trade or make copies. so, yea, this was kinda long and thanks for reading it if you got this far ... love ya lots! ~Elizabeth From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Aug 7 20:56:05 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id UAA20330 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 7 Aug 2000 20:54:28 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200008080054.UAA20330@smoe.org> Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 10:54:18 -0700 Subject: Jewel-News: FWD: JeweLink NewsFlash! I have listened to Jewel avidly and continued to by all her new stuff, but my faith had dwindled and I was beginning to lose interest. until, this morning when my friend called me and woke me up. "Guess What?" she said. "Jewel Is going to be down in front of the capitol building this morning and we can watch her for free." I promptly got up and changed into some fake leathor pants (I later regreted deeply) and a cool white shirt I just bought and headed with my friend downtown. Jewel was apparently the entertainment for the Al Gore announcing his new runningmate. (We live in Nashville, TN by the way.) We waited in line for an hour until the told us we needed ticket. I asked,"If it free why do we need tickets?" Anyway we walked four blocks to get them and went back. Finally Jewel came out in a cute tanktop. She said,"It's a bit hot for my alaskan blood." Then she sang WWSYS in which the middle she stopped and said, 'There is a girl who has fainted and may need help if anyone cares." Apparently she had just been laying there recieving no attenion. I thought thats my Jewel. After the song she asked the girl if she was alight and the girl said I just collapsed from the heat. Jewel said ohh just a little collapse ay I collapse all the time. The crowd giggled. She then proceeded to sing Chime Bells at which point Noone was really listning to Jewel at all she stopped middway yodeling and said, "come on guys this isn't easy." At which point people laughed and started to clap. I took with me the Jewel songbook and The rolling stone magazine with her on the cover hopeing I might catch her to get an autograph. WEll, no such luck. Security was so tight with the VP being there and all there was no walking around buildings. Anway she was amazing and i haven't posted in a while and just thought I would share the experience. As many of you know, Jewel descends from a long line of talented singers and songwriters. The Kilcher family has always been one filled with original music. Many of you who caught Jewel's performance on VH1's "Hard Rock Live" several years ago also caught a rare glimpse into Jewel's early years, when she brought her dad Atz Kilcher up on stage and they performed together on a humorous favorite of Jewel's called "Yo." Over the years, many have asked if Atz Kilcher's recordings were available and if so, where best to get them. Well, we are very happy to add Atz Kilcher's first solo album, "You Are What You Are" and his brand new CD, "Spirit Filled Air" to the JMerch online catalogue, now making it much easier to find and enjoy his recordings. Personally, being one who enjoys following the "influence path" of favorite musicians, I've been interested in and have enjoyed various Kilcher Family recordings for several years. One of the things that makes Jewel so unique is the fact that early on, she was strongly influenced by the music of family; more so than popular music of the time. Atz Kilcher's new CD has been on heavy rotation here lately, but rather than express my enjoyment, here's what others have to say about Atz Kilcher's two solo albums: "Spirit Filled Air" Thirteen songs considered the very best of Atz Kilcher's songwriting and performing. Even for those familiar with it, the style is very difficult to describe. Think of a camp fire in a beautiful valley. Think of friends singing and telling stories. Close your eyes and think of love and intimacy. See the horses grazing beneath cottonwood trees, and hear the breeze through the leaves. Feel the air, heavy with the spirits of all those who have traveled this valley and sat around many evening fires. The Fox River runs silently by. The coyotes cry to the night. You are snug in your sleeping bag on soft saddle blankets in an old cabin. You might hear violin or fiddle, soft strains of mandolin and piano from the next valley. The bass you hear may only be the pulse of the waves on the not-so-distant beaches. You will feel the drumming of hoofbeats. Most clearly shining through will be the voice and guitar of Atz Kilcher, as he sings his stories of love, life and land. Most strongly your will feel the spirit-filled air that is giving shape to this stretch of the trail that Atz is journeying on. We say it is a unique Atz-Alaska style! "You Are What You Are": Atz Kilcher's first solo album was recorded in Switzerland, in the small town of Zuchville. This is where Atz's father Yule grew up. All the songs on this CD were written while he was touring Switzerland and Germany. There are songs of meeting new people, and seeing new places; songs of love and friendship; songs of reflecting back on Alaska where he was raised, and reflecting on being a dual citizen and being back in the land of his birth. "Fox River Grass," a song reflecting back on a beautiful valley where he grew up, and "Woodland Rockabye," a song about his mother teaching him music, are two of the strongest songs. Another favorite is "Not To Do What I Have Done," about a Viet Nam veteran friend committing suicide, is also a favorite which received the most air play in Alaska. It is truly a wonderfully written chapter in this Swiss/Alaskan balladeer's life. It gives you a rare glimpse into his heart and heritage. This CD has a country rock feel, containing 20 songs. Atz does lead vocals and acoustic electric guitar. His Swiss friend and producer Willie Ruefer plays all other instruments. The accordion and one Swiss dialect song give this 1996 release a nice Swiss-Alaskan country rock folk blend. Please visit our jeweljk.com website store, where you'll find both of Atz Kilcher's recordings are now available in our "CD and Video" department. For your convenience, the website store now offers several CDs by some of our previously featured guest artists, along with Jewel's album and video releases. While you educate yourself about our current guest artist Rickie Lee Jones, you may enjoy knowing that Atz Kilcher is our "on deck" guest artist. You can look forward to his feature next month. Speaking of Jewel's influences, those of you in the New York City area who are also fans of Jewel's friend, occasional collaborator (and acoustic guitarist in her band) Steve Poltz, he will be participating in a special "In Their Own Words" songwriter series at The Bottom Line in NYC tomorrow night, Friday August 12th. This series has featured an impressive list of the world's most talented songwriters and has been running very successfully for many years now. I've been to several of them and they always have four (usually very diverse) songwriters participate in each one. Usually, the way it works is that the host asks interesting questions and the artists take turns answering them and performing a song that relates to the question. It rotates between the four guests throughout the show, with each taking turns playing songs and answering questions. Occasionally, unusual collaborations happen and the interview and songwriting dialogue aspects of these shows can be really fascinating. (I went to one years ago that featured John Cale of Velvet Underground fame, Joan Baez, Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes and Natalie Merchant. Quite a strange combination, but very engaging!) These "In Their Own Words" shows usually last approximately 2 hours and there is both an early and late show. While they won't be typical marathon Steve shows, it should be extremely interesting to anyone interested in various approaches to the songwriting process. The other three songwriters tomorrow night are Robbie Fulks, Don Dixon and Marti Jones. Doors open at 6:00 PM for the 7:30 Show and 10:00 PM for the 10:30 Show. The Bottom Line is located on 15 West 4th Street, on the corner of West 4th and Mercer in NYC. You can call the box office at (212) 228-6300 or buy tickets at the club, which is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 11:00 PM. Quite a bit is going on at the moment, so we may send you additional communications over the next few days. I'm sure most of you remember last winter, when so many of you raised almost $5,000 for HGH/Clearwater as a Christmas gift to Jewel. And we all know you made the difference when Jewel won the "Smooch For A Cure" $25,000 grand prize for Clearwater Project, several months ago. Many of you are wondering what the next steps would be and how things are going. Wonder no more, because I deliver this message directly to you from the Clearwater Team. Read on and then enjoy your weekend! MrBB *************************************************** It's been awhile since you've received an update on our progress with the Clearwater site funded by the participation of so many of you in the EDA community. Between the individual donations sent to us directly and your participation with Smooch for a Cure, we have had $30,000 set aside in a bank account specifically earmarked for a site that would be dedicated to the EDA's. In the beginning we were hoping to do a site in the U.S., but we have found that difficult to carry out. The number of approvals required in the U.S. for a site can take more than 2 years to get underway. And we have requests coming in from other parts of the world where clean water is so very critical to the health and well being of the people. Shane Kilcher, along with scientists and engineers working with Clearwater, have recently embarked on a trip that includes Honduras, Tanzania (in Africa), Kerala (in India), and Bangladesh. They have already completed their stay in Honduras and there is a wonderful opportunity to assist the people of Gualsea, Honduras. (Honduras is on the East side of Guatamala, which is just South of Mexico.) We have learned that key to the success of Clearwater sites is that the community requests this kind of assistance and is organized such that it will carry out the project on a long-term basis. The people of Gualsea initiated the request for assistance and have already formed a Water Committee which has obtained the necessary government approvals for this project. All that is needed now is funding! The funding for this project is planned to be implemented in two stages. The first stage will cost $30,000 and the second stage will cost approximately $35,000 and will be sent sometime next year. Depending on weather conditions, the timeline for the project is approximately 1 1/2 years and is more extensive than sites we were considering in the U.S. However, we plan to send the initial $30,000 next week so this project can get underway! Our plan is to dedicate this site to those of you who made a difference with raising the $30,000, as well as to all of you who have contributed in ways beyond measure to your family, friends and community. It is our experience that people in other countries are amazed that people who have never met them care about the quality of their lives and raise money for these kinds of projects. We plan to present the people of Gualsea with a plaque in both English and Spanish (Spanish is their native language) acknowledging that this project was made possible by the Every Day Angels and Higher Ground for Humanity. Jewel is among the many performers and musicians featured in this four hour documentary. David Crosby, well known for his musical adventures with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, began this awareness-raising film and book project back in 1997. "Stand And Be Counted" will be broadcast in two parts on The Learning Channel. Part one premieres this Monday (August 21) from 9:00PM to 11:00PM EST, with a rebroadcast at midnight. Part two premieres this Tuesday (August 22) from 9:00PM to 11:00PM EST, with a rebroadcast at midnight. We expect this documentary to be very interesting and we are looking forward to viewing it ourselves. Now we turn you over to Lenedra, who today enters less serious territory, while answering more of your questions. Many of you were curious to ask these two questions: Why does Jewel call you Nedra instead of mom? Do you prefer Nedra or Lenedra? Lenedra replies: While both of my sons have always called me "mom", Jewel began to occasionally call me by my first name when she was in her early teens. She had two cousins who called their parents by their first names and occasionally she did this with me. When we started working in the music industry, however, she switched to calling me Nedra most of the time. When I asked her why, she said it was out of respect for my abilities and talents. She said she noticed that when she said her "mom would call," people had less respect than if she said "Nedra would call." It bothered her that people assumed that a mom had less professional ability and intelligence, so she switched to my first name. I can say that when I began in the industry, people did rather treat me as though I had birthed a little baby genius and then had a lobotomy! It was funny to me. I'm very patient about such things and I believe that respect grows over time based on performance. In fact, this has been the case. For Jewel, the slights and weirdness about it were bothersome. She often wonders what people think about mothers. She finds the underlying attitudes about mothers, in general, to be very strange and thinks that the role seems to be praised in some odd ways and to denote a very confining box in other ways. Jewel also thinks it is rather unusual how much this question comes up. People are often very puzzled, even disturbed, that she calls me Nedra. Do I prefer Nedra or Lenedra? I prefer Lenedra, but because Jewel calls me Nedra, it is the name most commonly used in business. That's fine too. A funny side bar: When my spell check program comes to the name "Nedra," it suggests "nerd". So... Maybe it is personal. -Lenedra ****************************************** There you have it. Anyway, As ya'll have read in other posts, our great EDA friend, Laura, "Luna" Taylor has started a Living Room Tour, that began here in the Dallas/Ft worth area of Texas, and should be ending in Canada near the end of September. Both performances here were simply amazing! The first show began at Courtney's(another fabulous EDA!!!) wonderful house north of ft worth. Luna's set was great and included songs of hers like, "Quality Time", and "Wild Beast" which both can both be found on her web site http://www.geocities.com/lil_waternymph/mariposa.html Besides many of her wonderful songs (i'm bad with titles, so please forgive me) she also did a cover of radiohead, and at the crowd's request, a couple of jewel covers. A highlight of which would be When the entire audience sang YWMFM while Luna played her guitar... After the show Derrick, Luna, Chris (Luna's traveling companion, roadie, friend, and a jolly good fellow!), and myself ended up that night at Denny's (hey, that is a required EDA stop, right?)There we talked, and luna shared pictures from her past journeys... After that, again Luna found herself listening to the three of us begging to hear more, so at the hotel she played us two songs for the road. Saturday night began in David's loft Apartment not too far from downtown dallas. It was an amazing loft with original hardwood floors, a huge bay window, and great, studio quality acoustics. The night went by smoothly, as we talked, while waiting for everyone to arrive. I think about twenty-five people attended last night. The crowd was quite diversified, containing construction workers, school teachers, architects, and musicians. Alas, I was the only EDA at that show, but it was still a really good group of people. The night went by with the audience laughed at Laura's wonderful tales of adventure's in song writing, and also sat, mesmerized, watching her nimble fingers quickly dance across the frets of her guitar. As her graceful voice filled the room with her songs, people could be seen reaching for the hands of their dear ones, and I could hear sighs of contentment from people sitting near me. During a break, there was dancing, laughing and talking. The host, David, kept us all well fed and entertained. The night included luna's singing, dancing, and even a passing conversation/lesson in German and spanish!(Speaking of which, I've never heard anyone speak german so seductively than David. He made me appreciate the beauty of that language) There was a good time had by all that attended... Anyway, I won't lie... It was a great night! I urge everyone out there to attend a Living Room Concert if they have the chance... It is the perfect excuse to get together with some great EDAs, and an even better way to meet new people, and hear some great music! I'm sure Luna will be posting her next dates once she gets back east, so check them out, and I promise you a good time!!! ya'll take care rowdy From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Aug 22 18:32:34 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA21109 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 22 Aug 2000 18:31:41 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200008222231.SAA21109@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 15:37:43 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Scott Evans Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel in the new Rolling Stone Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk In the new Rolling Stone (with the ever-so-hot Gisele on the cover), there's a picture of Jewel at the Gore-Lieberman running mate announcement concert (with a cute red and white polka dotted dress on...this isn't what she wore at the radio shack concert, is it? i can't remember..) and a mention of Jewel that includes a quote that should answer the question over whether Jewel has been Democrat-affiliated on her own free will.. On August 8th, when Gore announced Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, Jewel was on hand to sing "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant For Me." "I believe in the Gore campaign and what it stands for," she says. "And I like to encourage kids to get involved in the democratic process." On to another answer for you from Jewel's mom and manager, Lenedra Carroll. Today she answers JeweLink member Julie Herron, who asks: Was there one specific time in either of your lives (you or Jewel) when you knew she was going to be so inspirational to so many people and touch so many lives? Lenedra replies: It wasn't until Jewel was 18 and realized what she wanted to do, and why, that I knew she would provide inspiration through her music. In her earlier years I observed that when she focused on a goal she succeeded, so I felt she would succeed if she pursued a passion. She didn't do well at things that didn't interest her. For her the key was to have a deep sense of purpose in her choice of work. This, I felt, would lead to satisfaction for her, and success. -Lenedra *************************************** Before we go today, we encourage you to check the jeweljk.com calendar for a comprehensive reference of current and upcoming events.
