This is a review of the DVD, from the August 2000 issue of the UK movie magazine Empire. ---------------------------------------- Popular with the Academy but unjustly snubbed by the cinema going public, Ang Lee's thoughtful Western is due for discovery. Certainly a departure for the Tawainese director, whose reputation is founded on conversational relationship flicks (often with food), it is an expansive rites of passage saga, that contains due Lee-type character interaction, but also a lot of mighty fine gunplay. Tobey Maguire (the most pleasantly unassuming of the new breed) is the "coming-of-age" in question, as he joins up with the guerrilla gangs of the South (known as the Bushwhackers) with his best pal, Skeet Ulrich. Over a series of historically accurate conflicts, he'll do all the epic growing up stuff that only happens in the movies: death, loss, betrayal, love (with the excellent Jewel), and a life-defining friendship with former slave Wright. Elegant, stirring, a tad long-winded at times, but - flop status aside - maintains Ang Lee as one of the most consistently nourishing directors out there. (Four Stars) The menu: Just assembled images from the movie and annoyingly frustrating to operate. (One Star) DVD extras: A fairly mediocre "making of" featurette that divulges how physical a shoot it was, how Jewel spent her time completely terrified, and what a nice man Ang Lee is. No great shakes. (Three Stars) IAN NATHAN Issue 134 August 2000 ------------- Chris. B: How did you feel watching yourself on the big screen? Jewel: I still think i look ridiculous. You can't make up for the fact that you've never done it before. B: What's the greatest misconception about you? Jewel: I don't know why people seem to think i'm this kind of Pollyanna neo-hippy. I'm generally very irreverent. And i have a sense of humour! B: How do you cope with fans? Jewel : I don't pretend to be in a good mood when i'm not. So if they want an autograph and i'm in a really bad mood i say to them, "Sorry, wrong day to be asking". B: What's the worst thing about being a celebrity? Jewel: The loss of anonymity is difficult for a writer. You feed on watching people but now people watch me back! B: Will you be writing a song about making the movie? Jewel: What a boring song that would be! [She sings mockingly] "I'm in my movie trailer...I'm going to the craft services truck soon... I'm really bo-ored." B: How did you feel about baring your breasts for the camera? Jewel: There's no sensational quality about it, so i knew it would be all right. But when i was watching the film with my band, i ordered them "OK. Everybody shut your eyes! Nobody who works with me can see this scene." *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Hehehe. Back in April of 97, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were on a US tour together and doing a gig in Cambridge, MA. Their next gig, two nights later, was scheduled for Albany, NY (a very long drive). They discovered that the Albany venue mistakenly advertised their gig on the wrong date, so rather than drive all that way for a certain wash-out gig, they contacted members of the Jewel list and suggested doing an impromptu gig in the Boston area, if The EDAs could provide a venue and there was enough interest. Amazingly, within 24 hours The Snyder family in Boston volunteered their home and approximately 25 people from around New England descended on the Snyders home with food, drink and piles of audio and video equipment. At first, everyone was a little anxious not knowing what to really expect, especially the musicians. As we eased into the performance, everybody relaxed and began totally getting into the spontaneity of the moment. This intimate approach dramatically changed the dynamics between performer and audience. The musicians were totally getting off on the fact that everyone really was there to listen and the audience experienced a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. Total communication between us all inspired Cindy Lee and Elizabeth to play for almost 4 solid hours and everyone (including them) left a bit stunned and amazed at how great it was! It was certainly the most memorable night of their tour. Shortly after this, the musicians, myself and several other friends here on this list, began discussing the viability of doing a revolutionary approach to touring and somehow facilitate more of what happened in Boston. The idea was to cut out "all the suits", i.e., management, promoters, agents, etc., and book a summer tour directly into fans homes. I won't get into all the details but this was done and it was a huge success! Shows were booked in various EDA homes around Northeastern USA, promoted by fans on the Internet and a ttended by hundreds of people over the course of the tour. Every date was incredibly special in its own way. Some shows were actually in living rooms and several were outdoors in yards. Each attendee paid $10 toward the musicians. This "LRT Concept" has taken focus primarily with San Diego and Boston area musicians, but is continually expanding. Musicians who've participated in LRT gigs include members of The Rugburns, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Randi Driscoll, Cindy Wasserman, Peggy Watson, Jody Blackwell, Jenny Bruce, Renatta Bratt, Kevin So, Eric Gerber and of course Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill (and now even CLB's entire Garage Orchestra). Almost everything so far has been recorded and there exists an extensive archive of the LRTs so far. Some video clips will eventually be on various websites and some of the recordings have been released (with authorization) on the "Future Folklore" tape series, which itself was inspired by that 1st "LRT gig" in Boston. Other authorized releases will be forthcoming. This "LRT scene" continues to generate incredible interest. Many musicians have expressed interest for future LRT's, including fairly high profile artists like Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin and Tara MacLean. Every musician who's done it, definitely wants to do it again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I am currently working with Stephanie Hewett to hear her music via MP3 or more infor check out her website at www.stephaniehewett.com. There are some people born into this world with a special talent as a musician. As the years pass, life seeks to find this talent and ignite its expression. For Stephanie, music lives inside her spirit and is released through thythm and harmony of her songs. Born in rural Kansas, Stephanie grew up in a small farming community. She began piano lessons at age 5 and drew inspiration from jazz and rock classics, the sound Stephanie would later claim as her own was emerging. It was during college that longed to leave the orchestra, where she played a bass, and let loose to experiment without boundaries. Stephanie broke away from what she felt were the stiff rules of standard music and is currently working on a new album due out this summer. ------------------------------- A Living Room Show is an informal concerts, usually in people's homes, where 20 or more people can sit comfortably to enjoy an initmate concert. Its a great way to bring a musician to your town. Living Room Host Provide: Space that can fit at 20 or more folks comfortable. Let's begin with the latest news: Jewel has completed her manuscript for her next book, "Chasing Down The Dawn." Now we're diligently working on final layout and the selection process for some great never-before-seen vintage photographs and original artwork by Jewel. Things are progressing nicely and we'll keep you informed as publishing information becomes finalized over the next few months. We also have some breaking news about a documentary that may be of interest to you. David Crosby, well known for his musical adventures with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, began an awareness-raising film and book project back in 1997 called "Stand And Be Counted." The focus of this project is to educate young people about social activism in music. Jewel was filmed for inclusion in this documentary and this footage will see the light of day on The Learning Channel next month. "Stand And Be Counted" will be broadcast in two parts on The Learning Channel on Tuesday, August 22nd and Wednesday, August 23rd. We don't have broadcast times yet, but we will be adding that information to the website calendar and in JeweLink with plenty of time to spare, so not to worry. We think many of you will find this documentary very interesting, so mark your calendars! I'd now like to turn you over to Chuck, manager of JMerch, who'll be dropping in from time to time with information for you. Take it away Chuck: ***************************** Hi, We at JMerch are excited to let you know about an upcoming opportunity for you to have access to specials and exclusive products that will only be available to JewelLink subscribers! These special offerings and discounts will not be available through Jewel's Official Website at www.jeweljk.com. To kick off our involvement with JeweLink, we are currently putting finishing touches on an exclusive product that will soon be available ONLY to members in an upcoming announcement through JeweLink. To take advantage of these upcoming specials you will have the option to order online from JMerch via a direct link. Also, I'd like to invite anyone who has not visited JMerch at Jewel's Official Website to stop by and browse. We now have the third original West Kennerly photograph in the limited edition autographed photo series available. You can view the newest image at our website store. As many of you already know, Ang Lee's highly acclaimed Civil War movie "Ride With The Devil," starring Jewel in the female lead as Sue Lee Shelly, will be available for DVD and VHS video rental in North American markets next Tuesday, July 18th. The DVD includes twenty minutes of additional footage cut from the "theatrical version." It also includes the trailer for the movie and a documentary about "The Making of RWTD" that will show behind-the-scenes footage. It's in letterbox format so you can enjoy "wide screen" viewing. You'll also find Jewel's video for "What's Simple Is True," a song featured on the movie soundtrack. If you'd enjoy owning an original copy of this, we'll be carrying the DVD. There's some confusion as to when the VHS format will be commercially released and available at retail pricing, but we'll keep you informed as we learn more about that. Chuck ***************************** Chuck will be back in future editions of JeweLink and will soon fill you in about exclusives for JeweLink members. Stay tuned! Wrapping up things today, we now continue with another answer to your recently submitted questions for Jewel's mom and manager Lenedra Carroll. Today, Lenedra responds to the following related questions: Neil Flanders asks: Jewel has inspired so many lives, especially mine. How has she affected your life and understanding of the human spirituality and soul? Amanda Vigurs from Queensland Australia asks: How does it make you feel when you are so loved and admired by your daughter who is also your best friend? My mother and I don't have that sort of relationship and I envy you greatly. Mandy Petzold did an excellent job of representing what many of you wanted to know by specifically asking: Out of all the great things your daughter, Jewel, has accomplished, what are you most proud of her for? Is it the singing, the book, the movie, or the humanitarian in her that you admire her most for? Lenedra replies: A number of the questions received were about the relationship between Jewel and me, so I will address some of these over the next several JeweLink communications. Mandy Petzold, for instance, asked which accomplishments (book, CD, movie, music, humanitarian focus) I am the most proud of and admire Jewel the most for. While I greatly respect and enjoy Jewel's artistic gift and prolific creative output, it is her commitment to personal growth that I admire most. She is committed to learning to evolve her behaviors and thoughts in ways that create more health within her and in all of her relationships. Jewel faces her fears and limitations with courage and determination. I have witnessed her passage through many hard-won personal transitions and I am in awe of her courage. Jewel possesses a breathtaking willingness to be honest, to self assess, to change, to correct and improve, to accept advice and wisdom and to develop her own wisdom and intuition. It is this willingness and the results of applying it, that makes her a human being that I can thoroughly delight in over a lifetime. -Lenedra ***************************** That wraps it up for today. Visit the jeweljk.com calendar page for continued daily event and TV scheduling updates and the website store for official Jewel merchandise. We'll include more of your questions and Lenedra's answers in the next edition. We hope you continue to enjoy JeweLink! Unfortunately it's looking like the options we are left with (at least for this year). Option #1 is Sleepy Hollow campgrounds - those of you who have attended in the past years may remember passing them in Phoenicia along the creek/river right on Rt. 28. They assure me they have sites further from the road where we'll be placed (on 5 sites), so hopefully it's not too open..... The plus side, however, is that they have showers and flushing toilets etc.... The cost per night is a little more, but not too much - it will be $8.50 per person per night, but if I remember correctly, Steve had raised the price last year to $7, so it's pretty close..... Quiet time here is 11pm-7am, but I'm also assured that there will not be anyone too close to us. Option #2 is The Hideaway Campgrounds, which has more trees, and privacy, but has no flushing toilets (at least near the site we'll be on) and has two port-a-potties at the front of the site and no showers! The cost here is still $5 per person per night. Quiet time here, I believe was 12am-7am, but loosely enforced. *Note from Mike*: When the decision is made, I will post detailed instructions on how to find the chosen camgrounds. Sleepy Hollow is incredibly easy to find, as is Hideaway, although I would have more detail and online pictures to guide you all to Hideaway. These are are main choices and I have reservations right now at each, but need to cancel at whichever one we won't be using ASAP in the interest of being considerate, so please let me know what you guys think ASAP :-) Neither has a web site..... Also, when you respond to this please let me know when you think you will be arriving and who is coming with who etc...... (Kelly, have you talked to Steve Messina?) There is the usual plan of tubing at least once for those interested - the town tinker has a web site so you can check out prices, etc... at http://www.towntinker.com - if you think you may want to do it, please review the site for any additional items you may want to pack for it :-) (Don't worry if you don't plan to go - there will be others not going - my girls are not old enough, so I'll be skipping the tubing again this year myself :-) A couple of us are also planning to try to go horseback riding (probably Saturday morning) We will be going to Silver Springs Ranch - their hours are 9:30-5 and the cost is $18 for 1/2 hour and $25 for an hour. I'm sure we will also make our usual trek into the town of Woodstock, and the Bearsville Theatre for those who like to go back and revisit for a few minutes :-) There will also be the annual tape grab bag, so don't forget to make a mixed tape of your favorite artists (remember no Jewel :-) Please check out the web site for the list of attendees etc... at http://www.quackquack.net/bv/bv2000.htm Lovies and stuff to you all!!!! I am certain many of you also prayed and/or had Andrea in your thoughts. I of course thank all of you too. :-) I sent each of the list and private emails on to Andrea and she thanks you all too (a personal message from her to all of you is below :-) Shortly after I sent the post , of which a copy is also below, Andrea informed me that the test results showed she indeed had cancer (the results were not a surprise, the news was expected). However, the particular cancer she does have is in fact one of the most highly curable kinds, so there is of course room for much optimism :-) So, with the proper treatment and regimen, and prayers from Andrea's family, friends (in flesh and online), we can all help do our part by continuing to pray and keeping her in our thoughts along with them :-) While Andrea has not been very active on the list the last year or so (one's senior year in high school can do that), she was at time very active on the list, and was quite involved with a number of EDA projects including the official "write the Down So Long video for Jewel" contest and the "20Q - questions for Jewel" project, and is a charter member of the EDAF (EveryDay Angels Foundation). So many of you may recall her from those days gone by. (By the way, she also was planning on attending this year's EDA/Bearsville 2000 event next weekend until all of this surfaced). Anyway, again, I thank you for all of your replies, as certainly of course does Andrea, whose personal message is next. Mike :-) ___________ A message From Andrea: hi EDAs, I just want to extend my thanks for all your prayers and concerns. I'm sorry I haven't replied to anyone's emails yet, it's been a busy past two weeks. (Having another surgery, recovering, etc.) What's amazing is the kindness of strangers, people who don't know me keeping ME in their thoughts and prayers. You can't imagine how much that means, it has surely lifted my spirits. I still don't know too much yet, I have to have more tests done to see where the cancer has spread and from there the doctors will decide on treatments, but I will keep you all posted. Again, thank you for everything, you are all angels 0:) Andrea Rotter ___________ My original post to the list on June 30th (for the benefit of newcomers mostly): Hi everyone. I first want to preface this by stating that I am not a religious man. I have always said I am not sure if I believe. I am writing this to all of you in hopes that I am 100% wrong, and that our prayers can and will help. So if others of you are out there that are like me and not sure of your beliefs, or even are sure and do not believe, please join me none-the-less to help someone who needs us. Just a few days ago, while chatting with a longtime, yet quite young member of the Jewel/EDA list, I found out that she is possibly facing a battle against cancer. She will find out for certain this weekend when test results are revealed. Respecting her privacy is of the utmost importance to me, so I will not say who it is, of course. However, as I said before, I hope that I am wrong in my unsure religious beliefs, and that we can do our part and help and pray that all works out fine for her. Although she has not been too active on the list in recent times, she certainly used to be quite so. Thus many of you may "know" her via posts to the list (the last time we discussed this, she had only actually met a small handful of fellow list members). While I know sometimes it is hard for people to pray for someone when they do not know who they are praying for, I know you all can do it. So please, join me in praying and/or hoping for the absolute best for our longtime friend. We CAN help :-) Mike :-) : \ / : -- o -- : / \ : .---. .---. : / \ @ / \ : / / / \( ) / \ \ \ : ////// / ' ` --\\\\ : / / / / : : --\ \ \ \ : // / / / /` \ --\\ \ \\ : / / / / / / . . . \ \ \ \ \ \ We are everyday angels. :) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Jul 16 23:51:54 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA27746 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 16 Jul 2000 23:51:02 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200007170351.XAA27746@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: "Tom Skyles" Subject: Jewel-News: * Jewel's new book mentioned in latest Rolling Stone Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 22:48:12 -0500 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey everyobody whats up? Now, I'll hand you over to Chuck from JMerch: *********************************************** Hello everyone, Chuck here. JMerch is now ready to unveil our first new product designed exclusively for JeweLink members! When we were first given the opportunity to develop a new product for JeweLink members, we knew right away that we wanted to do a specially designed Jewel-related mouse pad. Coming up with the right image for it was quite another story, and not so easy. That is, until we ran across a unique mouse pad with a suede look and feel that was just the right quality and texture we wanted to offer. Rather than have an image of Jewel performing, we also agreed that it was the perfect background for a photograph of a special moment between Jewel and her horse. What we offer you now is a textured image that perfectly captures the relationship between Jewel and her horse, Chance. To help convey our excitement, we're making the Jewel mouse pad available at a very special price. For our U.S. and Canadian JeweLink members, the price of $6.95 (U.S. Dollars) includes all shipping and handling charges. For JeweLink members in all other countries, international shipping and handling is included for $9.95. It measures 7 1/4 " x 8 1/4" and it's the perfect size for any desk. Please note that this exclusive is a limited-time offer and available only while supplies last, so don't delay. For those who prefer not to order online, you can easily view it online and then phone in your credit card orders on our toll-free line at 877-295-3935 (please press 1 twice to reach a customer service rep.) during weekday business hours (9AM to 5PM PDT). You may also fax orders to us at 760-602-4886. Chuck *********************************************** And now, Jewel's manager and mom Lenedra answers another question. Her answer today relates to the following three questions: Michael Crossman of Canberra, Australia writes: Hello Lenedra, Thanks for the opportunity! Has taking on the role of Jewel's manager changed your relationship with her significantly? I ask because I find it difficult to imagine what it would be like to have a professional as well as a personal relationship with my own mother. With a similar question, Mirka Nuorento asks: Is it sometimes hard working together with Jewel, because you two have also a parent-child relationship? Elaborating on these questions, Judah asks How do you and Jewel keep a good balance between your relationship as mother/daughter, and business partners? Or is a balance even necessary? Lenedra replies: Michael Crossman asked if taking on the role of Jewel's manager has changed our relationship significantly. Michael added that it was difficult to imagine what it would be like to have a professional as well as personal relationship with one's mother. And Judah and Mirka wondered how we keep a good balance between our relationship as mother/daughter and business partners? Naturally our relationship has changed as a result of the business partnership. The business adds a dimension that wouldn't be present otherwise. Does it change it in a negative way? No. We feel pretty lucky to be able to work together. We have a joint sense of purpose and commitment that is foundational in our interactions. Recently, as Jewel is maturing and leading a more autonomous life, and as the growth of our companies and my personal goals take more of my time, we find it challenging to give the personal and mother/daughter aspects of our relationship the time we enjoy. It is easier, now that we spend less time together, to have business dominate our interactions. Last week we discussed this and how we miss the lengthy 'hang' time we used to have. It is a bit of an adjustment to realize that we now have to schedule time to simply enjoy each other at leisure. It's all part of how relationships change over time, isn't it? All relationships do change, so it's important to make conscious choices about it. -Lenedra ************************** Before we sign off today, a quick reminder that there's only a few days left to enter the current website contest. She's singing Sometimes It Be That Way (an old time favourite of mine). A question about lyrics to this song, there's a part of the song where she uses her own name, ".. Jewel, I don't think you quite understand". From what I've heard and read about the song, she used to sing it ".. sweetheart, I don't think you quite understand." In the particular version featured, she sings 'sweetheart'. Does anyone know when this recording is from> Is it an older or newer recording> thanks! She will be playing two, yes two, nights in Saratoga, CA on the 26th & 27th. Look in your mailboxes tomorrow. Details about these concerts and several more will be revealed in the next JeweLink. MrBB
