Here's an interesting little tidbit on how Jewel says she's managed to endure being in the music business ( 2nd paragraph ) , and it indicates that her book does come out next month ( first paragraph ) . --Joe ( from InfoBeat , 5/30/00 ) (Launch) - Jewel's second book - tentatively titled "Chasing Down The Dawn: Life Stories By Jewel" - will be published by HarperCollins in July. "It's been a long book to write," Jewel said. "It's a different process than poetry. It's a book of short stories and prose and crap like that." In addition to writing, Jewel has spent the last four months launching her non-profit, humanitarian foundation Higher Ground For Humanity. She said she credits her work on the foundation with keeping her interested in remaining in the music business. "I got a little bit...really freaked out. I didn't think I'd ever go this far, and I started feeling a lot more like a pop star than I was feeling useful, and what's the point of that?" [ * yesterday ] : ... Jewel will perform at an event to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council dubbed "Earth To L.A.," which takes place at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles on *Wednesday. Larry David, Al Franken, Diane Keaton, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Carole King, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Rob Reiner are among the stars scheduled to join Jewel for the evening of music and comedy to benefit the NRDC's environmental work nationally and in Southern California. ===== folk_rock@yahoo.com My Home Page --Currently on KOSOVO , etc. : http://www.geocities.com/joeshenk From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Jun 2 18:33:34 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA14864 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 2 Jun 2000 18:33:18 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200006022233.SAA14864@smoe.org> From: Bearsville2000@aol.com Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 10:25:23 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: NJC: NEW BEARSVILLE DATES!!!!!! On page 11 there is a new pic of Jewel (with this caption under the pic-- Jewel shaded her shiner.) with this small story. Jewel In the Rough *** Jewel understands the power of gossip. When she showed up with a black eye at the ASCAP Music Awards show in the Beverly Hilton Ho- tel in Los Angeles on May 22, the pop star took time onstage to explain the shiner before rumors got started."I was really paranoid that you'd no- tice it and wonder," she told the crowd, which in- cluded Christina Aguilera, Lisa"Left-Eye" Lopes, Bill Withers and Steely Dan. "If I didn't say any- thing, you'd look at me and then look at my boyfriend and go,'Oh.' But there's not a good story. My beagle, all 20 pounds of him, did it." Jewel also offered some reasons the performance might not be her best: She not only had a cold but had also written one of the songs only about a month earlier. *** So what songs did she sing? We look forward to establishing an even better and more enjoyable relationship with you! Welcome! Before I continue with what's going on these days, someone would enjoy saying hello. I hand you over to Jewel: ************************************* Well, I suppose many of you might be wondering where the heck I've been since I quit touring around Christmas of last year. And the answer is hiding out. I've been on a 2,000-acre ranch a lot in Texas, just staring at open space and resting a lot. I was really tired. I had walking pneumonia all during my Christmas promo shows. My body was just plumb worn out. I was really tired of traveling and never being still. It took me a while just riding horses and being quiet before I started feeling like writing songs again - but thankfully the love and desire has returned to me, and continues again to be a great source of comfort, expression, and joy. For now I have no plans for a record. I've been busy on my new book, a bunch of short stories about things in my life from being on the road to canning rose hips in Alaska. It's called "Chasing Down the Dawn," and I hope it will be in stores by this Fall/Christmas. I'm looking at movie scripts. If I find one I like I'll do it this fall, otherwise I'll start working on a record. That's all for now. If you want to know what else we're up to, surf my website and stay tuned to JeweLink. I'll check in from time to time and let you know what I'm up to. Now I'll turn you back over to MrBB. All my best, Jewel ************************************* Hi, it's me again. Many of you are already aware of various activity going on, but for the sake of all our new friends out there, here's the latest accurate information: Jewel is wrapping up her second book, titled "Chasing Down The Dawn: Life Stories By Jewel," featuring short stories and prose. Contrary to speculative news reports stating it will be released in July, Jewel's second book should be published by HarperCollins later this year. A release date has not yet been set, but JeweLink will keep you informed as a release date approaches. The current excitement here revolves around the first time ever official JEWEL AUCTION with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Higher Ground For Humanity (HGH). The auction is your chance to bid on many highly prized collectible Jewel items including rare tapes, CDs, t-shirts, Jewel's surfboard, her mountain bike and the list goes on and on!! There's way too many items to even begin listing them all. Let's just say things have really been jumpin' here over the past few weeks! It's not too late to participate in the JEWEL AUCTION to benefit HGH or to simply enjoy viewing the auction items online. Simply journey over to www.auctions.com/jewel.asp. It's that easy! The auction will close at midnight (12:00AM EST) on June 6. Two opportunities to catch NEW Jewel performances recorded this year: Austin City Limits: Earlier this year, the 6th floor studio of Building B at the University of Texas was jumping as Jewel and her band entertained an audience of several hundred ticket winners. Taping an installment of the highly acclaimed PBS series "Austin City Limits" adds Jewel's name to an astounding list of performers over the past 23 years. Jewel's installment of "Austin City Limits" will be a rare full hour devoted to one artist and will contain new material never performed previously! Look for this program to begin broadcasting on PBS stations nationwide beginning this weekend. Many PBS stations will broadcast this on June 3rd (this Saturday). PBS stations have different schedules in each area, so check local listings for transmission times and availability in your area. Radio Shack Concert: Next week, Jewel will be performing a private concert in NYC and this concert is being recorded for a special RCA high definition TV promotion, two days later, on June 8th. Anyone within distance of a Radio Shack can go watch this concert for free, because on June 8th Radio Shacks nationwide will be broadcasting Jewel's concert on walls of high definition TV displays in their stores. We were told that the concert will begin broadcasting at 7PM regardless of your time zone. (Call your local RS to be sure.) It's also an opportunity for you to meet up with other fans in your area. For those of you who were unable to catch Jewel's performance in Ang Lee's critically acclaimed Civil War movie "Ride With The Devil," you won't have to wait much longer! The North American DVD and video rental release of "Ride With The Devil" (starring Jewel as Sue Lee Shelly) will be on Tuesday July 18th. The DVD contains extra footage and a few special additions including a behind the scenes look at the movie, the trailer and Jewel's video for "What's Simple Is True," a song featured on the soundtrack. Please visit Jewel's official website ay jeweljk.com for our calendar with additional detailed updates and TV listings. You'll also find all Jewel's official merchandise at her website store and remember, we feature NEW never before seen Jewel photos every Tuesday. There's also a brand new contest just beginning, so enter to win! On July 30, five lucky winners will be randomly chosen and will win one Spirit World Tour t-shirt, one natural ribbed Jewel tank top and one Spirit World Tour book. You'll find all this and lot more at jeweljk.com. Once again, welcome to JeweLink. Very obvious spoilers, including Stephenville lyrics and all the dialogue.. I was worried.. Was this going to suck? I thought about how long Jewel had been out of the spotlight, and thought that might have hurt her.. But it turned out to be the exact opposite; Jewel's little time out has so tremendously improved her that sometimes I wish she's pull a Celine Dion and take a two-year hiatus...but not really. What I just saw was a happy woman, genuinely happy, unlike the times she had the flu and still was under obligation to endlessly promote her Christmas album or the times where she had to sing the exact same songs on the exact same late-night shows to a stiff audience who really didn't care.. Her voice was great (check out those Janis Joplin-esque screams, they've improved greatly since she started), she looked serene, and there was just a great vibe. I remembered why I love Jewel so much, and, not too sound too horribly corny, it's like she says in Stephenville: 'I'm 25 years old.. It ain't the end, but it sure ain't where I began'... Let's start at the beginning Jewel's wearing a simple black outfit, looking very comfy indeed.. She starts playing the guitar for Stephenville and talks to the crowd.. "Hello you guys.. If y'all haven't heard, I was raised by wolves in the Alaskan wilderness, and then I was crucified in a van, for which the press will never let me forget.. [laughter] ..but it has been really, really, really, really, really really weird to get famous.. I mean, it's a weird trip, right? I mean, it's hard to imagine.. I never thought it would happen to me.. And it's a weird thing to deal with.. I've had kind of a hard time with it.. I mean, I guess it's hard for anybody.. [puts on a fake "survivor" voice] but I'm doing pretty good.. I just keep doing heroin everyday and I don't think about it.. [laughter] [fake New Age trendy voice] ..no, but it's been really hard, I've been meditating a lot to handle it and I'm taking an extended trip to India and I'm going to quit eating meat .....[normal voice again] So I've been living in Texas for awhile here [loud applause from crowd and Jewel laughs] If I mention like your local football team will you freak out? [raises arms] Texas, whoo! It's been great, [playfully] I mean I never thought like being in Alaska I would live in Texas, because we're so much bigger we're so much bigger than your state [big laughs -- some "hey!" reactions].. *Jewel starts into Stephenville, a nice acoustic rambling autobiograpical-type song* Housewives trying to recapture their youth by wearing floral print and suede Fixing their hairdos with PC, chemical-free hairspray Martha Stewart taught them to make on TV I was raised a farmgirl I'm too far from home, all alone on the road Trying to figure out who I am now the the stardust has turned to sand And the sand has turned to stone on the starmaking machine I'm 25 years old That ain't the end but it sure ain't where I began And my daddy, he wrote songs and he broke colts[?] And he went back to school to get a degree Now he teached music to kids, he taught music to me And this Alaskan girl was living in Stephenville, Texas Yes, you guess it, I moved here because I fell in love with a man And I moved his ex-old lady's things out of the closet The same closet I had to move my things back in It didn't make me feel that great, as if to demonstrate Everything's temporary given enough time But hey, I've got nothing to lose I'm a singer for crowds, I'm a writer of songs Hey Mom, look, I'm an entertainer I'm a modern day troubadour trying to find justice with six strings Trying to make the world make sense out of me Trying to be loved completely, trying to love honestly Trying to find a decent high noon cup of tea In another shitty hotel I'm trying to listen to the leaves speak Trying to steal secrets from fishes in the creek Trying to figure out who I am A singer, a pretty bad cook, maybe a good mom What will it be? Anyways, a few days ago I left work and saw this huge poster in the window that said FREE JEWEL CONCERT, so of course, I was totally happy. I still don't know if I can go, but I figured I'd ask if I could get the poster they had hanging as a Jewel momento. So I wanted to go into there before work since they close early the next day, but of course I get to work late so I missed the oppurtunity. Anyways, the moral of this sorta-long-for-this-kinda-thing story is that this guy came in to buy a soda, and sure enough he was wearing a RS tag so I asked if I could get that poster, and he told me they were supposed to be getting free posters in Wednesday night to hand out Thursday, so he'd save me one. So I dont know if it was mentioned before, but there's a possibility of scoring a poster at the concert too, so check it out beforehand :) Thank you for your patience, you are now free to fly away... fast. :) Sheila, the angel whose never been to a concert but is happy cuz she's getting a poster of Jewel to put next to her Dawson's Creek and Spirit promo pic. The show was remarkable for a number of reasons and I highly suggest you continue planning to get together with other EDAs in your area & view it tomorrow night at Radio Shack. The Hudson Theater is tiny & is located in the Melinnium Hotel on Broadway in NYC. Beautiful old style theater, great acoustics & it only sits 600 on all three floors combined, so about 200 people on each level. Nice & close regardless of where you sit. The show began with a great surprise (to me, anyway). Lyle Lovett opened for Jewel & did a great (but short, approx 30 min) set in quartet fashion, instead of his well known Large Band. It was also great to again hear Lyle's cellist, John Hagen, who was a member of Jewel's "Tiny Lights Tour" band. Jewel's set began in typical "Spirit Tour" setlist fashion for the first few tunes. Well played, but nothing special, really. When the band left & she began her solo acoustic material is when things began jelling. The room was dead silent as Jewel played a new one called "Stephenville". As oldtimers know, Jewel's acoustic music is always best in a quiet room & silence often inspires her best acoustic performances. This was definitely the case for this & the next tune. It's another new one that is sure to please those who loved "Break Me". It's called "Violet Eyes" and it's probably the best thing Jewel's written this year. Following the acoustic set, things got rockin with the band and I'll go as far as saying "Everybody Needs Someone", "Down So Long" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" were the best versions I've heard since the Europe shows last year. What made them stand out was in the approach. Last year these were often attempted at very fast tempos, but last night they were all slowed down just enough to give them a much better groove. I hope those of you who venture out to a Radio Shack tomorrow night to watch the High Definition TV satellite feed enjoy yourselves! Hope to see some of you at Dennis Harris' Living Room gig Friday night! Though she is not on tour, but rather penning new material from her Texas home, the pop-folk singer performed as part of a concert co-sponsored by RCA and Radio Shack. The concert will be broadcast on televisions in Radio Shack stores beginning Thursday and will run until the end of the month. Opening the show for the crowd of 300 was singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett. The Texan performed some of his older songs, including "If I Had a Boat," off 1988's Pontiac, and "Good Intentions," from Lyle Lovett and His Large Band (1989). Jewel, whose most recent release was Joy: A Holiday Collection, in December, performed a set of hits that included "You Were Meant for Me," "Foolish Games" and "Who Will Save Your Soul" (RealAudio excerpt) from her debut album, Pieces of You (1995). She then moved on to more upbeat hits, such as "Down So Long" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Deep Water," as well as the more folk-oriented "What's Simple Is True," from her sophomore release, Spirit (1998). "My voice is kind of hoarse tonight," Jewel said between songs. "Sorry about those high notes." Nevertheless, the 25-year-old singer, looking decidedly sophisticated in an orange silk dress and black high heels, was energetic and in high spirits as she strapped on an electric guitar to belt out a new, rock-country tune that took her into Bonnie Raitt territory. Other new offerings included a Bob Dylan-esque folk song about living (and loving) in Texas, as well as a ballad that Jewel told the audience was about a friend who recently died of cancer. The concert was part of a special RCA-Radio Shack promotion to announce that Radio Shack is now selling RCA digital audio and video products. The alliance of the two companies will kick off with an international music series called "Music in High Places," which films musicians playing at international sites such as Peru's Machu Picchu and Egypt's Great Pyramids. According to RCA, Jewel will film an episode for the series. I hope it formats properly cause I've just come from an exam and am not in the mood to edit! Jewel Rocks Out in New York City 06/07/00 Though it might seem an unusual method to test out new material, Jewel took the stage Tuesday at New York's Hudson Theater to shoot her latest collection of songs for a promotional demonstration video. The concert will be used to display the audio and video quality of RCA's Digital Entertainment Center at RadioShack stores throughout June. It also served to launch the fall cable series Music in High Places, which the two companies are sponsoring. "I think they only got me because Sting couldn't do it," Jewel joked. "But I love doing shows where people don't have to pay anything." After a twenty-minute warm-up performance by Lyle Lovett, Jewel took the stage with a full band (including her one-time beau and co-songwriter Steve Poltz on guitar) and rushed through her earlier, softer material before getting to what she really wanted to work on -- her newer, huskier songs. Some, she said, weren't completely finished, joking that she would have to write the final verse to one as she sang it. Referencing her past few months living in Stevensville, Tex., Jewel made it clear that she intended to roughen up her sound with a bit of heartland rock. The newer songs, played during the later half of her set, at times made the former folkie sound schooled in electric Dylan, Sheryl Crow and John Mellencamp. Yet she apologized for her vocals, passing her richer voice off as a sore throat ("Excuse the high notes, please," she said at one point). But she was clearly able to overcome that, shrieking and wailing with an intensity she hasn't often shown in the past. She even scat-sang along with her band mate's guitar, matching it note for note despite difficult octave changes, during a loose and rowdy version of "Who Will Save Your Soul." Her songs, though always seemingly intimate, were also clearly autobiographical and deeply personal this time around as well. "No one has heard this before, except my friends," she said when introducing one song about a friend's slow death from cancer (the working title is "Violet Eyes"). "It's hard to write things that are close to me. I've always tended to write things that sound personal, when they're not. But this is." In addition to modifying her songwriting style, Jewel also said that she's been writing more about her life in short story form. She said her collection of short stories, to be called Chasing Down the Dawn -- which will be out by Christmas on Harper Collins -- was written while she was on tour last year, mostly during short bursts of insomnia late at night. "It's an odd book," she said. "It's not chronological, though it traces growing up to being homesick and other excerpts of my life. The focus changes. The tone really changes. There isn't one voice. It's not like there's a theme. It just goes from being very lyrical to very practical to very sad." "Writing to me is my most important thing," she added. "When I get sick of singing, I need to do something else that's fulfilling, so I write." JENNIFER VINEYARD (June 8, 2000) ----------- That's it - hope you enjoyed it! Currently I am sending out Stephanie Hewett and along the way various musicians have been signing up to play at these special events. ----------------------------- Thanks to Mr. BB here's a history of the LRT phenomenon. Back in April of 97, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were on a US tour together and doing a gig in Cambridge, MA. Their next gig, two nights later, was scheduled for Albany, NY (a very long drive). They discovered that the Albany venue mistakenly advertised their gig on the wrong date, so rather than drive all that way for a certain wash-out gig, they contacted members of the Jewel list and suggested doing an impromptu gig in the Boston area, if The EDAs could provide a venue and there was enough interest. Amazingly, within 24 hours The Snyder family in Boston volunteered their home and approximately 25 people from around New England descended on the Snyders home with food, drink and piles of audio and video equipment. At first, everyone was a little anxious not knowing what to really expect, especially the musicians. As we eased into the performance, everybody relaxed and began totally getting into the spontaneity of the moment. This intimate approach dramatically changed the dynamics between performer and audience. The musicians were totally getting off on the fact that everyone really was there to listen and the audience experienced a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. Total communication between us all inspired Cindy Lee and Elizabeth to play for almost 4 solid hours and everyone (including them) left a bit stunned and amazed at how great it was! It was certainly the most memorable night of their tour. Shortly after this, the musicians, myself and several other friends here on this list, began discussing the viability of doing a revolutionary approach to touring and somehow facilitate more of what happened in Boston. The idea was to cut out "all the suits", i.e., management, promoters, agents, etc., and book a summer tour directly into fans homes. I won't get into all the details but this was done and it was a huge success! Shows were booked in various EDA homes around Northeastern USA, promoted by fans on the Internet and a ttended by hundreds of people over the course of the tour. Every date was incredibly special in its own way. Some shows were actually in living rooms and several were outdoors in yards. Each attendee paid $10 toward the musicians. This "LRT Concept" has taken focus primarily with San Diego and Boston area musicians, but is continually expanding. Musicians who've participated in LRT gigs include members of The Rugburns, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Randi Driscoll, Cindy Wasserman, Peggy Watson, Jody Blackwell, Jenny Bruce, Renatta Bratt, Kevin So, Eric Gerber and of course Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill (and now even CLB's entire Garage Orchestra). Almost everything so far has been recorded and there exists an extensive archive of the LRTs so far. Some video clips will eventually be on various websites and some of the recordings have been released (with authorization) on the "Future Folklore" tape series, which itself was inspired by that 1st "LRT gig" in Boston. Other authorized releases will be forthcoming. This "LRT scene" continues to generate incredible interest. Many musicians have expressed interest for future LRT's, including fairly high profile artists like Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin and Tara MacLean. Every musician who's done it, definitely wants to do it again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I am currently working with Stephanie Hewett to hear her music via MP3 or more infor check out her website at www.stephaniehewett.com. There are some people born into this world with a special talent as a musician. As the years pass, life seeks to find this talent and ignite its expression. For Stephanie, music lives inside her spirit and is released through thythm and harmony of her songs. Born in rural Kansas, Stephanie grew up in a small farming community. She began piano lessons at age 5 and drew inspiration from jazz and rock classics, the sound Stephanie would later claim as her own was emerging. It was during college that longed to leave the orchestra, where she played a bass, and let loose to experiment without boundaries. Stephanie broke away from what she felt were the stiff rules of standard music and is currently working on a new album due out this summer. ------------------------------- A Living Room Show is an informal concerts, usually in people's homes, where 20 or more people can sit comfortably to enjoy an initmate concert. Mike Connell will include your name, state and email address on the Angel Needs A Ride section of the Bearsville 2000 website (http://www.quackquack.net/bv/bv2000.htm), along with the names and email addresses of those who are offering rides. if you see an EDA listed as offering rides in your general area, it will be up to you to contact that person via email and ask them if they are willing to give you a ride. I will NOT be asking for phone numbers or street addresses from anyone, so it will be up to you to exchange that info, unless you are a minor, which brings me to my next point... If you are a minor (under the age of 18), need a ride, and would like to participate in ANAR, you must provide me with a phone number so that either myself or Tammy Campbell (tlcathome@aol.com) can get permission from your parent(s) for you to both attend Bearsville and accept a ride from someone who may be a complete stranger. Please understand that this is done to protect all involved. If you are able to find a ride, and will be attending, please also email Tammy so that she can put you on the list. That way we can get an idea of just how many people will be attending. If you are willing to offer rides, please email me at tnmiles@hotmail.com with your name, age, email address, number of people you are willing to take, and the general area in which you are willing to pick up (i.e. Philadelphia/Camden or northern NJ/NYC etc). (by the way, it was a pretty neat/different kind of musical show. Those who did not catch it missed out on something unique) Mike :-) P.S. The text below calls Jewel a Grammy Award winner. She's never won a Grammy. TSO: The Ghosts of Christmas Eve Atlantic recording artists Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO), Grammy Award winner and pop music sensation Jewel and Tony Award winner Michael Crawford headline an hour-long television spectacular. Hosted and narrated by veteran stage actor Ossie Davis, the fairytale epic underscores the power of love during the holidays and brings together some of the most extraordinary musical talent ever to share the stage. The award-winning Trans-Siberian Orchestra performs symphonic rock works blending the theatricality of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the poetic storytelling of Harry Chapin, the thematic drive of Yes and the raw edge of Aerosmith. Filmed entirely on location at the highly ornate, historic Loews Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, NJ, the special tells the story of a 14-year-old runaway who yearns to return home and be with her family for the holidays. Seeking a refuge from the cold weather, she breaks into an abandoned theater and instead of merely providing temporary shelter, the experience changes her life forever. Through loose pages that fall out of the young girl's diary, viewers learn of her desire to return home to her family. But, without a bus ticket or a dime to her name, the youngster takes solace in the quiet theater and falls asleep. The caretaker, portrayed by Davis, takes stage right of the ornate theater and with the flip of a switch sets the performances in motion. The runaway awakens to find a bus ticket and some money slipped inside her diary and leaves the theater with happy memories and her chance to return home for the holidays. Holiday selections performed include: TSO's "Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy" and "Christmas Canon;" Jewel performing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" (from her new album, "Joy: A Holiday Collection") and Tony Award winner Michael Crawford's unforgettable rendition of "O Holy Night" (from "Michael Crawford: A Christmas Album"). Radio Shack will also be funding "Music In High Places," an international television series that takes top recording artists to the most sacred sites on Earth. The show is designed to be "National Geographic for the MTV Generation," marrying great music and adventure with the wonders of lost civilizations. A portion of the proceeds from this series will be donated to UNESCO, a branch of the United Nations that raises money to protect sacred sites around the world. Jewel is scheduled to film one of the first episodes this summer. JeweLink and our jeweljk.com calendar will keep you informed as Jewel's involvement in this unique program progresses and broadcast information becomes finalized. Our talented photo team was let loose on NYC during Jewel's recent visit there and jeweljk.com will be featuring these new images from Jewel's performance as well as "behind the scenes" adventures for you to enjoy in the weeks to come. Every Tuesday, jeweljk.com changes the photographs featured on our photo page, so remember to check them weekly. We provide you with new Jewel images found nowhere else every week! Now onto some fun that needs your thoughtful input! In my area, our PBS station has a program on Sunday mornings called "Ask The Manager." Viewers can call or email questions related to the station which the manager then answers on the air. In an effort to answer some of the questions many of you may have and to simply initiate some interactive fun into our JeweLink proceedings, Jewel's mother and manager Lenedra Carroll invites you to participate in an "Ask The Manager" question and answer session with her this weekend. If you would enjoy submitting a question to Lenedra, please do so by emailing your question to AskLenedra@jeweljk.com. Please include your name so that we may credit your question should it be one that she answers. For the next 48 hours only, questions will be accepted. All we ask is that everyone please limit themselves to ONE question. Questions will only be accepted through early Sunday evening, at which time that email address will be terminated. As of now, you have two days to email Lenedra your question at AskLenedra@jeweljk.com. So join in the fun and participate in this opportunity. While it will be impossible to answer every question, we look forward to hearing from you. We'll include some of your questions along with Lenedra's answers in upcoming JeweLink messages. So anyway, I'd like to have a gathering for those of us in the Rochester area. I lost all of the e-mails from Rochester area EDAs (That's why I never wrote back) AOL SUCKS!!!!! So if any of you are interested, even if you're not from the area, let me know. I have no clue what we should do. I'm not too familiar with Rochester. I do know some great places near Geneseo. Letchworth Park is pretty awesome. And there's this great waterfall, we call it Fallbrook. It's in this wooded area off the side of the road. You can't see it, just have to know it's there. See, told ya I never shut up. So write to me if you're interested, and give me some times that are good for you. If you want to get a copy of this directly as each issue comes out, you can subscribe to it by following the instructions on the official Jewel web site at www.jeweljk.com - Mike :-) ******************************************** JeweLink - The Official Jewel Communications List ******************************************** Hello again everyone, We'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of you who took time to submit a question to Jewel's mother and manager Lenedra during our "Ask The Manager" JeweLink project. Many interesting questions came in and we'll include Lenedra's answers to the two most popular questions in this edition of JeweLink. Before we get to that, we'd like to relay some information to you about Jewel's official website. As many of you probably have noticed, we are continuing to improve both the functionality and appearance of jeweljk.com. Low-end users will find that version has been improved for faster loading and a few bugs have also been fixed in the last week or so. Also, by popular request, we are now archiving the weekly new photos for the past few weeks, in order to give you more time to view them. As you know, we include new never-before-seen Jewel photos every Tuesday. Stop by and you'll find new images taken by Jewel's favorite photographer, West Kennerly, every single week! Last week we featured new photos from Jewel's most recent June 6th concert in New York City and this week we've added more new images (including Jewel doing The Limbo!) from last year's World Tour. Remember, if you are curious about upcoming events and TV programming featuring Jewel, visit the jeweljk.com calendar page where you'll find details on significant upcoming events and TV broadcast scheduling. We update this almost every day. You also have about a month to enter our current jeweljk.com contest! On July 30th, five lucky winners will be randomly chosen and each will win a Spirit World Tour t-shirt, a natural ribbed Jewel tank top and a Spirit World Tour book. There's no purchase necessary for your chance to win one of the five prize packages. Simply fill out the website contest form to be eligible. Winners will be posted on jeweljk.com and notified by email. A 1996 solo acoustic performance of "Who Will Save Your Soul" that Jewel recorded live at Radio Woodstock WDST FM is included on their 20th Anniversary Benefit CD titled "Tuned In". There's a handy link to details and ordering information on the jeweljk.com calendar. Proceeds benefit the FFA Breast Center at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, NY and Family Of Woodstock. ************************* OK. Let's move on to your questions for Lenedra. We should probably start with the #1 question, which is represented well by the following JeweLink members: Brett asks: I am from Australia and am currently visiting here in the US and through my following of Jewel and the great website that is produced, I had the great pleasure of seeing Jewel perform at the Earth to LA benefit night a couple of weeks ago, which I enjoyed immensely. I realize that Jewel is not touring at the moment but are there any plans in the future for her to do a tour to Australia in the near or distant future? I would love to see her in a full concert in Australia, she is a very unique talent. Thank you and I look forward to your reply. Alexia asks: My name is Alexia and me and my friends were wondering if jewel is going to go on tour again this summer? Thank you. Sean Reed asks: Hi Lenedra! Thank you for JeweLink! I love it! My question is what are Jewel's plans for the next tour and album? When can we expect its release? Maria asks: Hi, I live in B.C. Could you tell me where and how I can get tickets to watch her sing? I have always wanted to see Jewel play live. It would be greatly appreciated if you could answer my question. Lenedra replies to Question #1: A lot of you were interested in touring and next album plans. Jewel hasn't begun to plan her next record. She will tour when it releases. There's a possibility that may be next summer but that's very unknown for now. This summer she is doing a few 'one-off' performances here and there, usually private engagements. JeweLink and jeweljk.com will let you know of any upcoming shows that will be open to the public. -Lenedra And summing up the #2 most popular question, these JeweLink members asked: Steve Sharpe asked: When do you think Jewel may come out with a live album? I saw her twice in concert last year and her live performances are beyond compare. The humor, the music, the feeling she puts into her show is something I'd like to replay over and over again. In a related question, Tom Pierce asked: Jewel is obviously a prolific songwriter who could release at least a CD of new material a year. Is there any way to give her the freedom to put out more? Could you release a CD of her early songs (off Save the Linoleum, etc.) which would protect them from the bootleggers and give her fans access to them? Similarly, Geralyn, Jose, Anthony, and Alex combined asked: Greetings! It is my understanding that Jewel has a vast collection of unreleased recordings sitting on the shelf. I would love to hear some of this material (particularly songs from the sessions that yielded "Spirit"). Any chance that some of it might make its way into our hands anytime soon? How about some sort of exclusive CD to be released only to subscribers? Lenedra replies to Question #2: We are planning to release some live material, versions of the EPs, and other such in a variety of formats. We are currently in discussion with Atlantic about some of these ideas. As well, we are developing uses and methods within our company. I can't be more specific yet, but over the next 18 months you'll begin to get more of these from Jewel. There are issues to work out, but I agree that, with someone as prolific as Jewel, fans deserve access to a lot more of her material than can ever be recorded on conventional albums. -Lenedra ************************* There you have it. Other than a reminder that Ang Lee's acclaimed Civil War movie "Ride With The Devil," starring Jewel as Sue Lee Shelly, will be released on DVD and video rental in North America on July 18th, that's about it for today. Lenedra will continue to answer your questions in upcoming editions of JeweLink and we'll keep you informed about Jewel's projects and performances. Stay tuned! I first want to preface this by stating that I am not a religious man. I have always said I am not sure if I believe. I am writing this to all of you in hopes that I am 100% wrong, and that our prayers can and will help. So if others of you are out there that are like me and not sure of your beliefs, or even are sure and do not believe, please join me none-the-less to help someone who needs us. Just a few days ago, while chatting with a longtime, yet quite young member of the Jewel/EDA list, I found out that she is possibly facing a battle against cancer. She will find out for certain this weekend when test results are revealed. Respecting her privacy is of the utmost importance to me, so I will not say who it is, of course. However, as I said before, I hope that I am wrong in my unsure religious beliefs, and that we can do our part and help and pray that all works out fine for her. Although she has not been too active on the list in recent times, she certainly used to be quite so. Thus many of you may "know" her via posts to the list (the last time we discussed this, she had only actually met a small handful of fellow list members). While I know sometimes it is hard for people to pray for someone when they do not know who they are praying for, I know you all can do it. So please, join me in praying and/or hoping for the absolute best for our longtime friend. We CAN help :-) Mike :-)  : \    / :                    -- o -- :                      /    \ :                             .---.           .---. :                           /      \  @    /      \ :                         / / /     \(   ) /    \ \  \ :                       //////  /    '     `       --\\\\ :                     / /   /  / :         :   --\  \  \ \ :                    //  / /   /   /`     \     --\\ \   \\ :                  / /   /  /  / /  . .  . \ \  \    \   \ \                     We are everyday angels. :)
