Since everyone seems to be getting a little restless and repetitive speech is not uncommon, I have decided to translate another piece of the Dutch Article from the magazine ONE :) BE AWARE OF THE STUPID AND IGNORANT COMMENTS OF THE WRITER OF THIS ARTICLE..(sorry not trying to give my opinion..just had to say that :)) Ok here we go : DATE WITH A SOAP STAR Pieces of you became 8 times platinum, she appeared in cheesy talkshows , sang at the Superbowl, participated in a Sing-a-long night full of easy-listening at Madison Square Garden and got a make over for the cover of VOGUE. Her clast tour was sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger. She dated male model Michel Francouer, and she dated soap-star Christopher Douglas. All the roughness that made her cool, has been lost. What happened to the shabby troubadour? "The success, and most of all the fame, overwhelmed me" Jewel admits. "I rebelled against the press , who were only copying things of one and other, and began to make tougher music because I thought it would be the cool thing to do. None of this was released. When I listen to the tapes it feels like it wasn't even me. I just sounded angry. This is a weak position to write from. And it was a little cliche to think that 'middle of the road' couldn't be cool." She lost the anger as a result of trying to combine worldfame and being truthful to herself. " When I wasn't famous yet, every song I wrote, was my own. As I write songs about things close to my heart, it all made sense. But when I suddenly had a hit, the songs belonged to everyone, and everyone had something to say about it. I am sensitive , so I took it personal. It then became clear that I had to follow my own path, if I wanted to keep enjoying it all. But it is very hard to stay on that path if everyone is trying to take you in another direction. It is hard to stay pure in a situation like that." Increasing Frustrations Pure, a typical Jewel-word that stands for honesty, clear, truthful, straight-forward. She is convinced that she is all of the above. People mistakenly see her as someone with arrogance. But, didn't she create those opinions herself? With anger, tears about bad reviews and screaming at journalists who, in her eyes, didn't try hard enough to understand her. And then there was Ride with the Devil, a western drama set in the American civil war. It was the first time Jewel was in front of the camera. The movie was directed by Ang lee, a director who is not known for his angry moods, but during the taping the frustrations were clearly apparent. " I underestimated how hard it would be for her to keep up with experienced and talented actors" he says. " After the first week the tension luckily decreased". What Ang Lee however doesn't tactfully mention, is the fact that Jewel acted like quit the diva on the set. " I think it was lack of experience" says a co-worker who wishes to remain anonymous, " but she did a lot of things that were very distracting. As soon as the camera was pointing in another direction, she started to rehearse her lines outloud and doing little dances. She didn't stay with her part and was easily frustrated:' Ahhrg I can't believe we have to do this again..' she just made it hard for everyone. She also irritate other actors, by playing her guitar and by speaking to crew members with a little baby -voice. She treated them like imbeciles. " Oh may I please have a glass of water?' she would squeak. The after to someone else, that's how you should treat them." "To be honest I don't know what you are talking about" Jewel responded. " But I think they probably didn't understand me. I tend to joke around allot. One time I came into the cafeteria and said 'Everybody out !' , they didn't get it was a joke. They expect me to be this music diva , while in fact I actually always make fun of that. I had to stop making those jokes because they took me seriously. And about that baby voice,, have you ever heard how idiotic everyone talks to actors? ' Can I do anything for you, Massage your neck, peel an apple, kiss your royal butt ??? I was just making a joke of that too..." ok everyone :) I told you it wasn't going to be pretty :) Just remember there are always people who are filled with jealousy and try to tell Jewel down.. I know it isn't true, and that's enough 4 me :) Next weekend I will probably write the last part of this article, so if your interested keep your eyes open :) have a great week :) Caroline From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Apr 2 21:04:48 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA22308 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 2 Apr 2000 17:54:45 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200004022154.RAA22308@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 17:47:39 -0400 From: MrBB To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB - Jewel: NickNews Tonight/TNN on Tuesday Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Just a quick reminder that Jewel will be featured in a NEW "NickNews" segment tonight at 8:30PM EST on the Nickelodeon cable network. Also, this Tuesday (April 3rd), the Nashville Network (TNN) will be rebroadcasting "Merle Haggard: For The Record". This is a re-edited version of his Las Vegas career retrospective concert, which was originally broadcast live as a pay-per-view event last October. Jewel is featured singing two duets with Merle: "That's The Way Love Goes" & "Silver Wings". It's a three hour broadcast beginning at 8PM EST. Now, I'd pay to watch David Duchovny read the phone book for two hours, so I went to see this movie despite the fact that I'd heard it was sappy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I genuinely enjoyed it, *and* there was an added bonus: during one scene, "Angel Standing By" is played! PLEASE help :-) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) For those of you that don't "know" me, I am the guy that runs/manages the Jewel@smoe/EDA list. I have a special request, the result of which will benefit many list members. I am writing to try to help fellow list member Jodi Damon obtain a crisp clear version of Jewel singing "Break Me" from her appearance on Candice Bergens' show Exhale (from the Oxygen network) which was broadcast in late February. (for those new here, this brand spankin' new song was all the rage on the list in February/March) Jodi is putting together a new Jewel-only angelfood tape for the list (the first NEW one to be treed in OVER three years), and this song is really needed for this tape, which will be treed to the list once ready. ( if you do not know, for more information on "what the heck is a tape tree?", head to http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/tapetree.htm ) Jodi has posted twice trying to get a recording of "Break Me" for this tape, but sadly NO ONE has helped her out.......so here I am! :-) What I want to get is the BEST possible copy for her....and what I need to do that is an original VHS video cassette recorded on a Hi-Fi Stereo VCR from a stereo broadcast of Exhale. (it does NOT have to be a Hi-Fi *TAPE*). I want someone to send *me* their ORIGINAL video tape (I will reimburse the postage)...I will then make a pristine copy of the audio to send to Jodi, and send back the original video tape to whomever sent it to me. As a thank-you bonus, in return I will send the person who sent me the video tape a quality set of the JewelStock Tapes (a 3 tape set). If you already have this set of tapes, we can work out another set of angelfood...I have a fair amount of stuff. (if you do not know what the JewelStock tapes are, trust me, you will not be disappointed.....more information on what JewelStock was is here http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/jsorig.htm ) So, if you have what I need....a stereo copy of Jewel singing "Break Me" on Exhale recorded on a Hi-Fi stereo VCR, and are willing to send me your original tape, please reply to me so we can get the ball rolling :-) Mike :-) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/jewel * Many basic/common Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * Need some Angelfood? I recently went to see "Boys Don't Cry" at the art theatre in town, and picked up a copy of FilmFinesse, a free movie mag about upcoming films. On page three there is an article about RWTD. Quite positive (gee, the first one maybe? :þ), as you'll see below....enjoy! ============================ Ride With The Devil A complex and dicisive time in American History is painted in admirably expressive shades of grey in Ride With The Devil. Impressing audiences once again with the diversity of his choice of subject matter and milieu, director Ang Lee has made the brutal yet sensitive film about the fringes of the Civil War, and about the families and neighbuors who were divided among themselved along the Missouri-Kansas border. "As powerful a war movie as Saving Private Ryan. Dynamically directed by Ang Lee." - Graham Fuller, INTERVIEW With this, his sixth feature film, Lee has chosen to focus on the American Civil War. The quitessential turning point in America's History. And, as with THE ICE STORM (1997), he shows an astonishing ability to cut to the heart of the matter. This is not a political diatribe against slavery, but a carefull constructed exploration of the effects of a war that divided families and communities, and had men fighting out of loyalty even when they didn't believe in the cause. The four main characters Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire), Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich), George Lyde (Simon Baker-Denny), and Daniel Holt (Jeffret Wright) are members of the Missoui Irregulars, a poorly organised, rag-tag group that wages guerrilla warfare against Union loyalists. Like their jayhawker enemies, these bushwackers often attack without warning or mercy, killing men and burning whole villages with seeming impunity. The story develops over the course of a winter, where the four men hide out in a crudely built shelter on the property of a pro-Confederacy family, the Evanses. A youing widow in the household, Sue Lee Shelly (Jewel), becomes involved with Chiles, and Clyde spends much of visiting a local lady friend. This gives Roedel and Holt an opportunity to get to know one another and sets up the inevitable tragedy when combat occurs, and not all of the participants escape with their lives. After the Irregulars stage a bloody raid on Lawrence, Kansas (a Union stronghold), they are hunted down by Northern troops and cut to pieces. Injured survivors seek shelter with friendly families, and are forced to re-evalueate their participation in the war. As the film progresses, Lee increasingly stresses the pointlessness of the Irregulars' struggle. The only thing they are accomplishing is killing people. Nothing they do has any impact on the war. This truth occurs to everyone, beginning with Sue Lee and ending with Roedel, as disillusionment convinces each of them of the folly of continuing the fight. RIDE WITH THE DEVIL also illustrates the horrible excesses that some men go to in the name of cause. >From a technical perspective, RIDE WITH THE DEVIL is nearly perfect. The attention to detail invested by Lee and his crew shows. From costumes to props, everything has the unmistakable hallmark of authenticity. The perfomances are all top-notch and Lee continues to astound the film-going public with his amazing grasp of historical and cultural representatations in countries foreign to his Taiwanese background. "Another Ang Lee masterpiece. A vivid, poignant film that wil touch your heart. Brilliant performances from a terrific ensemble cast." - Bill Zwecker, NBC-TV (Chicago) ================================================= -- Koos van Zyl >>>>>>> The Savage Angel <<<<<<< Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. However, for those who'd enjoy reading a little "sneak preview" of Jewel's next book (tentatively titled "Chasing Down The Dawn: Life Stories by Jewel"), there will indeed be an excerpt published in this new "O" magazine. This premiere issue of "O" includes an article focused on journal writing in general. Jewel contributed a "book excerpt" of her own journal writing, which is featured as part of this article. This new magazine, published by Oprah Winfrey, hits newstands & bookstores this Wednesday April 19th & should be easily available. Last Wednesday, Jewel was in NYC. She performed several songs at a fundraising charity event. The event was put on by Cable Positive with all proceeds going to AIDS research. Many people are still writing me asking me about Jewel TV broadcasts. This is one area where I will not answer private email. PLEASE check the website calendar. I update it at least once a day & all accurate current info is always there. Even though Jewel is not doing media appearances lately, theres still plenty of repeat broadcasts & segments featuring her, being broadcast. All that info is at your fingertips at jeweljk.com 24 hours a day. Also, I received several (inquiries &) emails saying Jewel recently won a BAMMY Award. No, although she was nominated, she didn't win a BAMMY. (For those wanting to know, the BAMMIES are the Bay Area Music Awards, an annual San Francisco area award show.) Also some very interesting news for NY/CT/MA EDAs: The first week of June, the incredibly talented Joy Eden Harrison will be swinging through the area performing at some very intimate venues. I highly recommend anyone in these areas take in these performances. You won't be dissipointed! Joy has never officially toured this area of the country (other than the incredible 1998 Living Room Tour shows) & this is a great opportunity to listen to her in a comfortable setting. Hi, It's Duff and I have begun to set up a series of Living Room Tours for July through October and you should sign up! ----------------------------- I am currently working with Stephanie Hewett to hear her music via MP3 or more infor check out her website at www.stephaniehewett.com. There are some people born into this world with a special talent as a musician. As the years pass, life seeks to find this talent and ignite its expression. For Stephanie, music lives inside her spirit and is released through thythm and harmony of her songs. Born in rural Kansas Stephanie grew up in a small farming community. She began piano lessons at age 5 and drew inspiration from jazz and rock classics, the sound Stephanie would later claim as her own was emerging. It was during college that longed to leave the orchestra, where she played a bass, and let loose to experiment without boundaries. Stephanie broke away from what she felt were the stiff rules of standard music and is currently working on a new album due out this summer. ------------------------------- A Living Room Show is an informal concerts, usually in people's homes, where 20 or more people can sit comfortably to enjoy an initmate concert. Its a great way to bring a musician to your town. You Provide: Space that can fit at 20 or more folks comfortable. Anyway, hi angels! There is a tiny mention of Jewel in May's Seventeen.. really small. In a review for Jill Sobule's new album Pink Pearl (check this girl out!!) they compare her with Jewel.. saying something along the lines that she's Jewel with a sense of humor! If only they knew the Jewel we knew.. they wouldn't dare say a thing like that!! With songs like Racecar Driver and Daddy She's A Goddess (okay this one is influenced a little by the funny ol' Steve Poltz).. Jewel's funny. That's my point. Anyway.. nice to have our little ol' list back .. partly. Bye!! Have a good Easter everyone!! "My journal has helped me stay in touch with who I most essentially am." Here, three excerpts. April 1996 I was stopped at a traffic light in Philadelphia. It was another town, another day, another drive in a record rep's car to another radio station so that I might sing for them in the hope they'd do more than offer me another sandwich. The window was rolled down and I drooped out of it. A beat-up old Chevelle pulled up next to me. It was some seventies shade of brown. The girl driving was looking straight ahead. She couldn't have been more than 19. I stared at her, admiring the brightness of her simple white cotton shirt against the dingy upholstery. Her hair was shiny and had been hastily combed into a messy pigtail. She looked over at me. I must have looked strange to her--a pale, scrawny girl with tired, puffy red eyes, crumpled in the front seat like a piece of paper. And her appearance certainly made an impression on me. She had a whopping black eye. Looked like yesterday's affair, but still pretty fresh. The whole side of her face was swollen. Someone had really put it to her. I wondered if she was on her way back to whoever did it, right now, with the groceries next to her on the seat. I wondered what could make her stay with him. I wanted to tell her to just keep driving until she got out of Philly--or until she got beyond the relationship that wounded her. She had the car. She had some gas. But, I thought, then what? Getting by in a place you know can be hard enough, especially for a poor young girl. How do you get by in a place you don't know? The light turned green. We drove side by side up the street, then turned our separate ways. Maybe she won't ever go near the person who did that to her. Maybe she just got in a fight with some girl. Rationalizing like this made me feel a little better, but I knew it changed nothing. Not really. my homepage: We Are EveryDay Angels check out my angelfood page, there's a link from my main page "But don't wander too far, My one constant star, Darkness exists, except where you are, My feet are filled with wandering, They follow your own, 'Cause everywhere you are feels like home." -Jewel, Last Dance Rodeo From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Apr 27 11:54:45 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id LAA26640 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 27 Apr 2000 11:54:30 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200004271554.LAA26640@smoe.org> From: "Scott" To: Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel's Sonicnet spots online Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 09:03:50 -0400 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk You can find Jewel's Sonicnet commercials online.. This one was really hard to transcribe because it's sung really high and the quality of the recording is only so-so. There are a couple of lines I couldn't figure out. LAY ME DOWN Lay me down with the childrem Lay me down for I'm tired and I'm weary And it's been so long since last I slept - weak The Japanese carpet and my feather bed's too big The shower's too wide and the hands of your memory leave me cold Now you say you're leaving me That's fine if you do It's not the leaving that hurts It's remembering all the kisses, the sweet smiles, the sunsets All the times we made love If only you were dead then I'd know you were gone You were the good one who said time meant nothing Now you're gone - time's all I have left [The next line is completely unintelligible. It MIGHT be "With some guy's tongue making me feel fettered and abandoned" or it could be something completely different!] His cold hands on my thigh And I wake up the next morning and I'm hurting and I know that you're gone 'Cause that said he would teach you how to cry [?] Lay me down with the children Lay me down for I'm tired and weary But it's been so long since I slept - weak And it has been so long From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Apr 30 23:50:10 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA26060 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 30 Apr 2000 23:49:22 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200005010349.XAA26060@smoe.org> From: W1GGY2@aol.com Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 23:28:19 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: Lyrics to DAMN THE DAISIES To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk As promised, here is the second of 2 transcriptions of songs from the Innerchange era (circa 1994) that have not been circulated before, as far as I can tell. So, that's exactly what I'm tryin' to do...and any of you who live in the area are more than welcome to drop by. Your support would be greatly appreciated, and I think you'll like the music...AMY :-)
