Read on & I'll be back following Shane's message. Here ya go: _________________________________________________ BIG WET KISSES! The American Greetings "Celebrity Smooch" was so successful that combined with the EDA Christmas gift to Jewel, we now have enough money for a new community water site! We are currently researching potential communities here in the US for our next site, and we want to dedicate it to all of you who took the time to make a difference. We have some really great ideas about how you can all participate in this new site, and can't wait to make it happen. Shane Kilcher ClearWater Project _________________________________________________ Hi, now it's me again. I also want to tell you more great related news. There's been some confusion about the "Celebrity Smooch" procedure & it so happens you all did even better than we originally thought. It turns out that each celebrity's represented organization recieved up to $10,000 for their smooches. The $25,000 grand prize for the celebrity with the most smooches was IN ADDITION to that. So... You actually helped raise $35,000 for HGH's Clearwater Project!! Cool, huh?! That combined with all the EDA Christmas Gift contributions totals almost $39,000. Incredible! As Clearwater determines the next location & this next community water site progresses, we'll keep the EDAs informed, so you can enjoy hearing about the great results happening at the new water site that many of you helped become a reality. There will also be information available at the ClearWater Project website. I know there are countless questions out there & they will be answered in time, so please be patient. We will definitely keep The EDAs informed. In the meantime, you can visit clearwaterproject.com for more information on current projects and for what you can do to help. Thanks again to everyone!! Now that spring is in the air, it's time to shake off the winter doldrums and announce a couple of upcoming EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF) events... ****** APRIL 9: EDAS TALK THE TALK AND WALK THE WALK FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS The annual New York area MS Walk starts April 9 at 10 am. Once again, we have entered the Jersey City Walk as "Team EDAF", with a goal to top our previous pledge amount of $740 by at least $100. Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating disease that generally strikes young adults. As of now, there is NO KNOWN CURE. There are several ways you can participate in the MS Walk: - EDAs in the NY/NJ area can join Team EDAF at beautiful Liberty State Park to walk 6.2 miles along the boardwalk in the shadow of the New York skyline, Ellis Island, and Lady Liberty herself. You need to raise at least $35 in pledges to participate in the walk (don't worry, it's much easier than it sounds). - For other EDAs, there are walks going on all around the United States. Check the National MS Society's website at www.nmss.org for your local schedule. If any international EDAs know of similar events in other countries, please let us know! - Even if walking isn't for your thing, you can still get involved! The MS Walk needs hundreds of volunteers to do things like man the registration tables, hand out water, etc. - And of course, you can sponsor Team EDAF walkers with a pledge! For further information on the MS Walk or Multiple Sclerosis in general, please contact Amy at w1ggy2@aol.com ****** APRIL 15: LIFE'S A BEACH, BUT WE KEEP OURS CLEAN! It's time for our third bi-annual cleanup of Angel Beach (aka, the South Amboy Waterfront). EDAF'ers will be cleaning our adopted beach in New Jersey on April 15 starting at 10am. Tradition calls for something incredibly fun afterwards for the participating EDAs (details to be announced soon). Everyone interested in joining the cleanup, please email Amy at w1ggy2@aol.com. For those not in the NY/NJ area, PLEASE look into joining or starting a cleanup in your area! What goes onto the beach goes into the water, eventually affecting our lives and earth's ecology. While it may not seem like much to clean a single waterway, it is a FIRST STEP. And every journey begins with that first step... Look around your neighborhood, find a place in need of a cleanup, and pitch in! Make a difference in your own backyard. ****** We would also like to applaud Jason and Sonja Vierling, Lori Arthur and all the SoCal EDA's who have been so active over the past few months, cleaning beaches and collecting blankets and coats for the homeless. You guys are great! We'd love to see more groups of EDAs get inspired and do similar things in other areas... let us know what you're up to! Hoping to see many of you at the spring and summer events, Amy, Dennis, and Tom for The EveryDay Angels Foundation ********************************************************* The EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit public benefit corporation whose mission is to promote grassroots volunteerism and community involvement. Lot's of people have been asking me to do it, but I'm quite busy with other things. I assure you, everyone here will find this new LONG interview thoughtprovoking. Surely there's one motivated EDA capable of doing this for everyone here, in a timely manner. Hope that kickstarts someone! ;-) If you haven't entered our current contest, please do so. This time, we'll be giving away a copy of the 1997 Time magazine featuring Jewel on the cover, autographed by Jewel herself. First, our newest guest artists are up. This time, we bring you performance poets Harold Branch III and Aaron Kabir Celious aka Unspoken Word, a two man team committed to sparking social change through the power of poetry. I know we have a lot of people interested in poetry here & you should check out their work. Fully loaded language that's dangerously true! I hope many of you checked out our last guest artists Cowboy Junkies while they were just on tour here in the US (primarily east coast). They're now recording a new album back in Toronto, but they'll be on the west coast this summer. A great band very worthy of your attention! We're keeping an ongoing archive of "guest artists" at jeweljk.com so if you are curious about musicians like Steve Poltz & Joy Eden Harrison, as well as other artists we highly recommend, enjoy this feature & the links it'll help you explore. For those still interested in the original West Kennerly photograph of Jewel (autographed by Jewel), JMerch only has a few dozen left, so don't wait much longer. These were limited edition photographs & will not be printed again. You'll also find a lot of "price drop specials" going on now at the Jewel Store. Too many to mention so have a look around. Not that any of you would need these, but the Jewel store does now carry all three of Jewel's albums: Pieces Of You, Spirit & Joy. You'll also find both home video releases, including "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" (now only $14.95!) & Joy (aka Sessions). And finally, by popular demand, we have added (for the first time anywhere!) the accurate lyric transcription to the song that seems to be blowing minds of EDAs everywhere: "Break Me" Just navigate to the lyrics page at jeweljk.com & there it is. It's already up on both highend versions & should be on lowend by days end. Correct all those lyric transcriptions out there & enjoy! Also, Juliet knows this already, but I never meant to discourage anyone from trying to transcribe lyrics or insult anyone for trying. My one & only point was simply to encourage anyone who had the Exhale interview to transcribe THAT as a next top priority of EDA interest. I'm telling you, it's by far the most intriguing interview Jewel has done in years & I simply hoped everyone here could enjoy it if someone who had the video would take the time to transcribe it. Yes, its a big job, but one that I'm sure would be appreciated by all the EDAs unable to receive the show. Hopefully some thoughtful EDA is getting this together as you read this, hint, hint. ;-) Have a good night & great weekend all! I will meet you in some place / Where the light lends itself to soft repose / I will let you undress me / But I warn you I have thorns like any rose / And you could hurt me with your bare hands / You could hurt me with with the sharp end of what you say / But I'm lost to you now & theres no amount of reason / That could save me So break me / Take me / Just let me feel your arms again / Break me / I'll let you make me / Just let me feel your love again Feels like being underwater / Now that I've let go & lost control / Water kisses fill my mouth / Water fills my soul So break me / Take me / Just let me feel your arms again / Break me / Make me / Just let me feel your love again Kiss me once or maybe twice / Oh, it never felt so nice / So break me /Take me / Let me feel your arms again / Break me / Make me / Just let me feel your arms again / Just let me feel your love again ---- A wonderful song by Jewel on Oxygen network, let's hope more will follow with the Austin City limits show. let's hope the show chooses songs that Jewel didn't sing so many times in concerts. Ok...it was a Jaguar and it was parked in my parent's driveway but it only had AM radio and I had to push the buttons. Anyway, tonight I will be talking to Jewel about her amazing journey from rural Alaska to the top of the pop charts. If your good she'll even sing a song. If your really good I won't sing with her. So stay tuned...it might save your soul and don't forget to Exhale. CB: Jewel is an actress, a poet, and a multi-platinum selling songwriter and recording artist. Her latest cd is titled Spirit. Welcome. Thank You so much for being her we're so excited. Jewel: Thank You CB: You have such a magnificent voice and I've loved listening to your music. But I was watching the VH1 Storytellers concert you that you did... I was so struck by how wrapped your audience was. They were almost spellbound. Hmm, how have you made such an immediate connection with people? JK: Huh, when I was about 18, I never really sung my music for people before. I grew up singing other people's songs in bars. And I didn't think I had anything that was really interesting, it's hard to value your own thought process. You know? but when I started going through things I started putting into songs uh, I don't know, I realized when i was singing in front of people, in a little coffee shop, my own songs, that people just want what's honest and sincere whether it's angry, scared,or hopeful, or in love, it's interesting to people cause it reflects those same feelings in people. So like the only thing I think about when I am on stage is try to be as honest as I can with where ever I'm at and that seems to keep people really loyal to you. CB: I didn't expect to see your name in the same paragraph with Marilyn Manson. But ,uhm, but in last summer's 'Vogue' cover you did the interview inside this is how they enlarge it for me. You can read it Laguna. Uh...hum you in talking about that, you said "All you can do is be honest and people will respond to it that's why people love Marilyn Manson, he's real, I worship him. I think we're different sides of the same coin. I think he wants to do the same thing I want to do, which is break down boundaries and teach people to be more open, to think, that's all I want. We're the same thing." It's Great JK: I got put on the Catholic or Christian prayer groups for that comment. "Pray for Jewel we've lost her." I'm not kidding. CB: There's a lot of people out there praying for you. I think you were just saying that waitresses are praying against you, praying for your destruction. Do you just want to tell me what we were, you were talking... JK: I did Rosie, and she said,uh, "So is it hard being famous", and I felt kinda embarrassed, you know? To be ungrateful for what I have, so I was like "oh, you know, it beats waitressing" and a lot of people took offense to it and started an organization CALLED "WAJ" Waitresses Against Jewel CB: I didn't think anybody would ever label you as being against the working class. Uhm, Who is your core audience? Are they young people your own age, or they suburban, are they city? JK: I've been really lucky to have, um, that's funny.... when I was just singing coffeehouse , before I got signed, I had a little 60 year old couples coming in... little 8 year old kids, and everything in between. Real strong male as well as female. It's something I wanted very hard to try and reproduce, though I know in today's market it's a young buying audience and those tings but I've been really lucky, to feel like, ah, I just did Austin City Limits...ah, last night and uh, I just feel really lucky. I always have 30-40-50 year olds and always young kids, so I like that. Well I did a show in Florida once with a bunch of bikers there and they were singing 'I'm Sensitive, laughing, so I like it a lot.< more laughing > CB: Unbelievable ability to connect with people. Um, your lyrics, are um so revealing, they're so direct. Your, your so unambiguous about your wants and your needs, and,uh,and I'm always reading you what you said....um, you said "Cynicism isn't smarter it's just safer. I've noticed a belief that somehow optimism lacks intelligence and that optimism must stem then from a lack of experience in L'FATAE (?not sure of word here) I don't believe that." JK:HMM.. CB: You, um, are you um,fighting cynicism single handily in our culture? JK: No, just in my own life, you know? I...I really think cynicism is a luxury people who can afford to lose hope. I may think at certain level when things get hard enough in someone's life it's a sink-or-swim situation and it becomes a 'am I gonna keep complaining and continuing this or I'm I gonna start seeing what I can do about it.' I mean....you know? Life is really a perception of it... it's a glass, half full or empty. It's a choice, I don't think one's more real than the other. Except for what you make real and sort of actualize and I just got to the point in my life where I realized I was making my life a lot harder on myself. Umm and the most faithful people I know are often the poorest, because they to have faith to continue and...and the most cynical people I know are....well,umm....journalists.... often, because you know, I think they can afford that, they have an income that I think can afford them to be a little bit cynical. CB: Are you surprised by how,um, how many un-cynical some people are...how there are pocket's of people who do, who are optimistic who are positivists....who want to try and change things and make the world better which is what you want? JK: Yea... CB: Or do you think we are fed because of what the media and, and what we're exposed to we think cynicism is more prevalent than it is and that maybe America is a more optimistic country than we thought? JK: Yea, I don't know, honestly. I mean I'm always surprised to see how cynical I am, you know? There are so many layers to it. I still noticed I am still quite guarded, and you know try and be cool and protected and not reveal myself too much in certain ways. I'm always surprised that it's still, you know? There's still so many areas where I'm like that. And I guess it's like that for people, some places I dare to have hope, and some places I'm pretty guarded about. I think a lot of people are like that.I notice with kids, kids really want...you know? People who are looking for places in the world to be tender; people are looking for places in the world to make a difference without it being some sort'of hippie commune or some kind'of ...uh un-grounded place. But there are people, like you were saying with your show here... I think, where people are starting to actually do that in the work place, and make places where people can be that way. CB: We're going to take a break. Stay with us we'll be right back. *** CB: Welcome Back to Exhale...I'm Candice Bergan and I am talking with Jewel. Umm, you were just saying that it's hard to fight being guarded uh, but how do you manage it all now with the kind of success you've had? I would think it would be impossible not to be guarded with the kind of attention you've gotten, the kind of media scrutiny that you've been under....do you have to fight it tooth and nail all the time? JK: I wonder how everybody does it you know? I've actually kind'of started, lately, wanting to talk to people about how they've handle their lifes and their careers. I've wanted to talk to like Oprah, and yourself and Madonna just to see how people stay alive and stay creatively alive and viable and relevant, at the same time have a life and those kind of things. I don't ,really honestly, have it all figured out yet and I've been going through a lot of changes and just trying to figure out is this what I want ... is this, you know? ...Am I going about it in a good way? How do I want to go about it? Um...and I ... you know? I'm sure I'll figure it out. The thing that is most important to me is.... being happy inside of myself, I'm just really miserable when I'm off my center and I am really aware of it. CB: What...what throws you off your center? JK: A Lot of things...I mean a lot of things make me outward. You know? I used to read all the reviews I'd suddenly see myself outside of myself... and it was hard for me to experience myself....genuinely inside myself cuz I started fearing so much of how it would be judged and you know? being judged is one of the worst over- censorships when you start concerning yourself, overly.Hmm, so I just think constantly remaining focused on what interests me right now and doing that regardless of how you think that will perceived and those things. CB: Do uh.. do you feel sometimes that you are not a woman of your time? Do you feel that your a woman of an earlier era? I know that you were raised with Ella Fitzgerald, and Cole Potter, and Edith Peiof and your parents read to you, you were surrounded by poetry. Um.. your music in a sense harkens back to a somewhat earlier time. Do you feel of this culture, of this moment? JK: Uh-huh... I do feel of this culture, and of this moment. I realized I was raised in certain ways that is very different, you know? from a lot of kids...say raised in New York or something. But I think I struggle with the same....you know? starting from the same point and living in the same world that everything else is and trying to figure out how to do that. CB: What do you think about American Pop-Culture? JK: I knew when I was a kid, raised on a ranch, I felt comfortable when I was out of doors and when I would have to, look at fashion magazines I would feel very uncomfortable. Cuz I felt really compared and I really compared myself to that. And so I've always kind'of avoided them and I always felt like, the standard that we're given by pop-culture is really sort of unattainable ...you have really perfectly beautiful people that can afford to do things to their bodies that most teen-age girls can't. And girls hold themselves against that kind of standard and it's been a hard thing for me to be in the public eye and go against that cuz I, like anybody else, feel the pressure of going,"well...maybe I should get my tits done" or something.....or like,uh, maybe you know? I should get my teeth fixed or my nose done or something. But I really do want to try and remain honest, and you know, and try and reamin, not create to big a gap between what I am and what most people are.....cuz it is the same thing. CB: I think..um, I think that your probably doing exactly what you should be. Which is just to fight to be honest....um, which is a struggle-- considering that you have to participate to a certain degree and um..... JK:Yea..... CB: You have to look like this...... JK: I'm sure you run across that all the time too, being a woman in this industry is really....the certain things, you know? CB: Just being a woman growing up in this country. JK:Yeah... CB: And this culture, um..... JK: Do you notice it a lot more here than abroad? CB: Ohhh.....Oh Yea!! JK: REALLY??!! CB: YEA!! Yea!! JK: Like everyone in France like eats cream and butter and the're still skinny.....I don't know how they do it. I mean why is that? CB: I don't know either. It makes me nuts CB:They Really Do.... JK: It's funny too it's like if I did fix my teeth people would riot. I mean that's a funny thing too, it's like it's my prerogative to fix my crooked teeth. CB: Oh, I beg of you not to. JK: But like Tommy Hilfiger did an ad with me and fixed my teeth without telling me..... CB: Ohhh.... JK: for an ad.... CB: I would've sued... JK: What's funny is like, people had a near riot and what's funny is in Japan there's actually girls getting their teeth surgically altered like mine. I mean it's a very weird thing. CB: REALLY??!! JK: YEA!! CB: Do you write about what happens in your life? When, for instance, a song like...Foolish Games, on your first album. Which is sort of lament of a failed love affair. JK: Right..... CB: Do,um, is that your own experience. Do you, your work being so honest, does it always reflective of your own life? JK: I kind'of exaggerate..really, you know...like CB: Well you are a storyteller JK: I take a little something that might have, I felt one day in the relationship a little bitter and torrid and I turned it into a whole song where you know, I said all the clever things I never had the courage to say, really ...in real life -- um but oddly enough when that became a hit I had just broken up with a boyfriend and that was years later after I wrote the song, maybe 4 or 5 years later, but it really summed up it was funny. I was just like any person driving down the road hearing a love song going "Yeah, that asshole!" JK: It was really funny CB: How do you meet guys? How do you meet guys and deal with the dynamic of the "Jewel-ness" of it all? JK: CB: how, um.... JK: It has been a little weird, I was always so poor that the man had to take care of me. I think men are actually comfortable with that role....I was pretty un-comfortable with it. And I noticed that when I got rich and famous it was harder for guys not having as much money as me, it put a real stress, and in the dynamic. Meeting guys hasn't been hard, I mean when people come up to you for their own reasons, it's obvious....you know? You know how it is, they're so transparent it's not hard to detect. Umm I've never really had a problem.....I don't really meet tons of people. I find my life to be actually be very isolated and I work a lot, and I notice that now while I am young I don't have a huge focus on it right now. CB: Like right now you're taking a semi-time off. Umm so what is that time off for you? Is it catching up with friends that you don't get to see when your touring? Is it um...when your my age it gets to be doctor's appointments Umm, what do you do? Ahh you live with your mom JK: Hmm...mm CB: And do you have horses? Do you ahh... do you try ...is your life kind'a nature bound life? JK: Yea... I've been umm, I've actually been living in Texas umm on my boyfriend's ranch, he has a like a 2,000 acre ranch there, and for me just to be able to get outdoors again and get quiet, and be in silence again and relate to myself irreleative of fame has been really important to me. Last time I looked I was 18 and I was just starting out and now I am 25 and becoming a woman and it's, and I am famous and I have money and I have lost my own amenity, I've lost my Alaskan roots. So I think I grieve a lot over the loss of certain things umm, and I am tremendously thankful for other things. So for me, to tell you the truth, like this month,I've been writing a lot and I've been just thinking a lot about ... now that I am 25 who am I? Who do I want to be? What does success look like? Do you have to work every single day? And never have friends, to keep popular? Like do I want lots of hits? Or do I want to just have a folk underground career? What I want my job to look like, now that I am here? Umm... so that's sort of what it's been all about for me. When I was in my... when I was in my car I got signed to the record label, I wanted to make a difference in the world, I wanted to feel useful, cuz I woke up everyday feeling like I was just passing time. I didn't want to spend my whole life like that....consiously knowing that I was doing really nothing that made me feeling like I wanted to wake up in the morning..... and when I started singing in front of people, and helping people feel less alone, and helping myself feel less alone, I suddenly I had a real...felt like I had a purpose in my life. And I wanted to never, I wanted to try and not disable people and I knew I was getting into a you know, an entertainment industry, that mainly disables people that says "don't think just buy", so I wanted to try and go about it in a conscience way and I felt like I had achieved a lot of that through a lot of my career and then I started feeling just like a pop icon and I felt like I was adding to the hype and I was adding to the.... and it made me feel bad about myself and I don't care to be a pop icon enough, I don't care for the adulation enough to kinda get me though it. So I lost a lot of motivation and it's something I am now getting back to, of how do you do that? You know? CB: We have to take a break, don't move JK: < Continued in Part 2 of 3 > From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Mar 18 23:45:24 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA12862 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 18 Mar 2000 23:44:56 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200003190444.XAA12862@smoe.org> From: Sabato229@aol.com Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 20:26:01 EST Subject: Jewel-News: Transcript to Jewel's interview on Exhale - Part 2 of 3 To: Jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk **Exhale Transcript** part 2 of 3 CB: Welcome back to Exhale. I am Candice Bergen and I am talking with Jewel. Um, I see you're wearing this really beautiful cross.... JK: Um..hmm.... CB: Is that, the fashion accessory that it's become, d'jour today? Or is it really that you are religious, or...? JK: Just cuz it sparkles, No...... A Lot cuz it sparkles. I'm not, I like wearing crosses. I wasn't raised with a religion, particularly,really..... CB: That's what I was wondering. JK: where I do, I mean, I do believe in God and.... CB: You had said before that you had lost touch with your Alaskan roots......how? Completely? JK: Not that I lost it, but for the first time in my life I hadn't been able to go back. And for me when I had problems as a kid growing up, I could go outside.... and just keep things balanced out because being in the natural world there's such a balance you really can't continue to feel bad or depressed, I couldn't. It was a very spiritual thing for me, it always helped me stay centered and focused. It kinda like an antidote..it would feel full of faith again. And the hardest thing, for me about touring, is basically been that I've been constantly on the road, and I haven't been able to use the tool I was raised with to get centered. So I've had to find other ways....I've depended on writing a lot more. But it was hard for me to feel God, you know in a tour bus or in a crappy hotel room, you know? CB: But, JK: I was used to seeing...feeling it outdoors. CB: Jewel, you've reached this level now, where I mean, you are this pop and musical icon. Do you have to tour continuously? Is that the catch-22 of it all, that in order maintain it, you can't stop? JK: Yea, I don't know. I think that it depends what kind of level you want..you know? I look at people, I honestly don't know. Like I look at Mariah Carey's life, and I look at Madonna's life and I think "Wow, they've been doing it" for, Madonna's been doing it and keeping hits out and that takes such a tremendous amount of energy. I don't know what kind of life she's had on the side or not, and I don't know if it's something I want or don't want. And it's something, actually I'm just thinking about you know? Trying to figure out what kind of career do I want? How important is it to me to have hits? What brings me satisfaction? You know, what other ways are there of doing things. Like in business,like....um, there's people now looking very, you know, high powered, very smart business woman that are looking for places to work. That aren't as "toothy" and "mean" and "back-biting" and "scary" to work at, they want to find places that are safe to work at and use there intelligence. Like me starting Higher Ground, I have some great people working for me who were looking for the opportunity, that you were saying you have here... CB: Well, talk to us about Higher Ground. Explain, that's a foundation you founded with your mother? JK:Hmm..mm CB: that is dedicated too..... JK: Umm, just humanity really. Um, I wanted, we both wanted to kind'of start a foundation that wasn't just helping rain forests or just helping woman or just helping you know, just one specific thing. We've created an umbrella organization called,Higher Ground for Humanity, that has many non-profits existing beneath that umbrella. Uhh... it could be as many or as few, it can be organizations we start, and well, you know... from ground up. CB: What are the organizations that are dedicated to specifics? JK: To all aspects of humanity from hunger to environment to spiritual needs to all those types of things. We have,ahh...The Jenna Drugg foundation that is somebody else's that we fund. That helps people deal with the loss of children, families who've lost children. Huh...we have clinics in India helping people there. One of our own projects we started is called the clear water project and it's, umm putting technology into third world countries to clean water, and they'll eventually be able to bottle their own water and,ahh... sell it themselves, and make money off of it. Umm...and there are many different, many different things that we have been doing. CB: And then you tie the certain amount of your earnings to that? JK: Yea, zero money of the organization is spent on fund raising. Um, 40% of my income, I think, last year went to it and 60% of my mom's. And that's just something that we started out to do before I even got famous, and I thought if I can get popular and use that as a platform and I do that as it's sort of always was a goal. And after only 4 or 5 years we've got to do that. CB: Umm, I don't mean to be vulgar, but umm.... if you tied 40% of your, of this year's income, and then you pay 50% taxes..... JK: YEA!! CB: And 10,20,30 to managers are you just in a debt? JK: Umm... I have great money people working with me, and it is an interesting thing, and sometimes I worry, you know? I think "Oh,what am I doing"? and, but... CB:40% is high! JK: Yea, my mom is kinda....she gives 60 and makes less money than I do, she makes a percent of what I do than she gives more than half of that to that, but I've just really.... I have enough to live on, and I'm gonna be fine. I can retire if I wanted, so it's like how much money is in the bank? I just always have to ask myself that. I'm okay, I'm well taken care of that way, and the rest I don't necessarily need.and a lot of my, you know business expenses, you just.... a lot of mine has gone into things, building businesses and things like the Clearwater Project will start making money, to start funding, you know....going back into other non-profits. So it's really just what I feel right about. CB: It's Great. It's Great, that your so young to be so organized. Umm... JK: That's my mom. I mean my mom is a person who is unwavering commitment in grace and execution, Ahh, and she set up all of these businesses, I sort of been the front runner, you know...the like horse out there doing it's job and umm... she organized these things with tremendous vision, and just grace. She puts really neat businesses and companies together. CB: So you success, and the fact that the two of you work so closely together, has not driven a wedge between you or what sounds lie just the opposite. If it's not to personal, when you grew up in Alaska, uh...you..ah, you grew up with your two brothers and you were raised, basically without electricity, without television, with poetry, with wonderful music and then your mother left when you were 8. JK: Hmm,mmm CB: Umm... did you choose to stay in Alaska, were there reasons that you didn't go with her? And then you re joined her when you were 14? JK: Yea...my mom didn't leave, my parents got divorced, and we all tried to live together as a divorced family in the same house and then that obviously didn't work. And so my dad moved to Homer...and my dad's the one that had the income and so we moved with him. My mom had no income. And,uh.... she started getting job skills, you know...she was a Mormon housewife and she had to start. She lived in Anchorage and became a glass artist and started making a business and doing things that would bring her income, so we could see her more than just on holidays. CB:Ah,huh. JK: Hmm, so it's not like my mom left or anything like that, it's just my dad had a good income and we lived there for the majority of the time. CB: Now, I didn't think she...abandoned you, I just didn't quite understand how,umm...that worked. And then when you re-joined her,umm...you had to, you had a time of real turbulence, around the age of 18? JK: Yea, hmmm...just mainly because I'd gone through high school and realized college wouldn't do anything but help distract me from figuring out what I was doing with my life. And,uhh... I wanted to figure that out. I've always had felt real restless, where like we should be doing something. I just had no idea what it was. And it made me desperate, umm... and my mom's always been so focused on....believing what's un seen is just as real as what's seen....and really helping me with my internal emotions and figuring out, why am I here? You know....help an 18 year old with questions like that....that maybe an 18 year old wouldn't always ask themselves and it encouraged me to stick with that, instead of just hiding from it.....cause it was scary enough that maybe I would have just got married and never had thought about it again Hmmm... so she really stuck with me and so it was a very turbulent time but also one of those times where it just changes your entire life. You know.....and it,and it did change my entire life. CB: And so she helped to guide you to a kinda of a epiphany about what you wanted to do with your life? JK: Uh...ummm... CB: Hmmm... JK: I remember, when i told her "Ok, I want to sing, that's what I want to do" Which took me forever to get to, even though you think...cuz I was raised singing, CB: Yea... JK:it would be a natural thought....but it....I never thought I was good enough to make a real living at it, you know? But, when I, as I wanted to sing, she says "well, that's fine. I'll help you do whatever you want, but you have to tell me why." And I had to go back, I had to write a list down, why I wanted to sing and I thought.... well mine's gonna be great! and then I thought Well...boy that won't do anything for me really and then I thought...well everybody loving me would be great! Oops! you did that whole popularity contest your whole life,Jewel.....you know? You weren't popular in high school you don't have to take it on the rest of your life. CB: You showed them! JK: And then see Johnny who never liked me.... And then I realized it's cause I wanted to help people and that's what my mom was looking for. Was something that would anchor me enough that it would keep me grounded through a career that she knew would ask me to remain grounded, if I was gonna remain at all.... CB: Does she do counseling? She sounds remarkable..... JK She's really cool CB" Umm... then you did a film last year with really gifted director,Ang Lee. How did that happen? JK: I've been looking at doing films since the beginning of my music but never could take time off from my music. CB: When I..... JK You know? CB: watched tapes of you,ummm.... you are so focused and you take stage in a way that's so natural and so confident that it seems a very logical step for you to take. JK: They're pretty different, I found. It does lend itself, like I think if I hadn't been in front of cameras and people so much, and acting/pretending on stage, I would have felt weird about it. That definitely helped....but, it's a real different thing. I am pretty used to performing in front of an audience...like all of my timing, works off an audience, you know? My timing, my jokes, all those kinds of things, when to break someone's heart. I just grew up on the stage, so I am used to that, and doing it in front of a camera I had a real hard time feeling my timing, you know....it was a real different thing and there's no one to impress. It was like if your a tree falling in the forest, why would you make a noise if no one is listening? You know....it was sort of.... CB: Yea, we could understand that here..... JK: CB: how did..uh, just tell us one of the reasons that he cast you, well we're sort of going back to your tooth, right? JK: Right..... I had period teeth he said. JK: You know I was egging on. I was kinda like fishing for a compliment, cause I just had such a low self esteem, you know, like why are you choosing me? You could have anybody you want! You now I was looking for a little bit of a bolster, he wouldn't give it to me. He was like..."'cause you have period teeth". I'm like CB: JK: Okay CB: Yea, my orthodontist was a bear JK: CB:Hmmm... what did, did you find it,umm.... over whelming in terms of the technical things that you didn't know, when you were acting marks and camera angles? Were you helped by the actors in the movie? JK: Never, felt.... CB:Or did...? JK: like I jumped in at the deep end of the pool, you know... CB:Yea...'Cause it was a very demanding part. JK: Yea,umm... I was glad to cuz I was really needing a change...you know? I felt like this limb is a singing and song writing limb and the rest of my creative body was just atrophying, and I was beginning to feel useless. And I wanted to keep myself alive, creatively......ummm...but I didn't realize how scary it would be until I actually got there and realized how behind I was, on those things, like you said those technical aspects and everybody was really.....really helpful and you know.....it took me, I had to scramble and I kinda got to the point where I got the basics down. CB: Was it exhilarating to do something so frightening that you, that you weren't so at home in? Something that was that challenging? JK: It was great! I mean it was frightening, it really was one of the most frightening things I've done. 'Cause singing is just so, natural to me. Now, you know all the phases I went through at learning it were a long time ago. So by the time I got in the public, on stage, like when that time I hit...you know, when I got signed I had a lot under my belt. So I got to do it pretty gracefully, and this...you know, I had to learn an camera, and that's embarrassing, you know? You have to like make mistakes when your famous, and that's a much scarier thing. CB: Yea, no kidding. Umm...stay right here we'll be right back. *** CB: Welcome back to Exhale. I am Candice Bergen and I am talking with Jewel. Ummm. did you ever rebel against your parents? It's seems like there was nothing to rebel against in your house-hold.... JK: CB: I, what do you do? You become Martha Stewart?.... I mean to rebel against..... JK: CB: Was there anything to....? JK:There was a lot of things about my childhood that weren't real fun. Ummmm.... CB: Like? < Continued in Part 3 of 3 > From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Mar 18 23:55:24 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA13096 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 18 Mar 2000 23:54:27 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200003190454.XAA13096@smoe.org> From: Sabato229@aol.com Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 20:26:15 EST Subject: Jewel-News: Transcript to Jewel's interview on Exhale - Part 3 of 3 To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk **Exhale Transcript** part 3 of 3 JK: I don't talk about it much cause I kind'a hate bonding with people over pain and I also didn't want'a hurt the people that, you know, that it all happened with. But, you know, divorce is never easy, and being a single father isn't easy, and it's not.....you know, it wasn't the most graceful transition in the world. Umm... and there was a lot of things that, you know, I had to work through and I'm still working through with all that, but I felt like I was given the tools to over come it, you know? I felt like I was given, ahh... free thought and I was taught to be a thinking person and I think that gift is more important than anything. Because I think it's what sort'of frees you to over come anything your given. And, ummm.... writing as well, I went through phases where ... you know, I remember like with my mom, when I moved back with my mom, I suddenly had a parent. My dad was really like "sure go stay with who ever you want, just call me when you get back", I was sort of like a little adult....you know...and suddenly I had a mom going "no be back by a certain time" and I was like "AH-HA"! You know, REALLY?! Ummm and so there's, I think, a kind of a bumpy transition where I would sneak out to clubs and those kind of things...ride home with men who shouldn't be driving, and CB: JK: You know, those kinds of things where you look back on your life and go I'm so glad I'm still alive, and we didn't get in a car crash or something. CB: Umm... I feel like that too...ummm... JK: CB: Uhh, your parents sound like they gave you an enormous amount of tools, that you've used, umm brilliantly. Ummm... your so undaunted when you perform did you learn that then? When you... JK: Yeah CB: were so small? JK: It's been an evolution...my dad's a great performer. I mean my dad's really good on being on stage and if nobody is listening, cause everybody's just, you know, drinking and talking, he'll make up songs on the spot about people and they'll suddenly be going "is he talking about me"? And he'll tell stories and he'll change a set-list so that if people came in tired, they just want to have fun, he'll do that. If they come in and they want to be heart broken, he'll do that. So I learned those kinds of skills, that I used when I opened for Peter Murphy from Bailhouse, which is a goth band, one of my first tours was that. And, you know, it was me standing in front of a bunch of kids, with vampire fangs, you know, going I'm Sensitive and singing, you know, faggot off of Pieces of You, you know? It was like.... CB: JK: But because that bar background, I was just like "hey, shut up, hey listen." And if you can't win 'em over like that like that tape you saw, you just keep singing anyway , you know? CB: Ahhh... that tape in Norway...... Oh,that was traumatic just watching it, they were yelling and you were just so focused, I was so impressed. Ummm. how is it, do you still have a relationship with your brothers? Is it difficult to maintain that? Because of distance, because of this elephant in the room which is become your success? JK: Right.....no,actually it's been really good. Umm,my brothers and I weren't real close after the divorce because it sort'of, I think divorce just fractures a family and all of a sudden every kid is going how am i going to survive? How am I going to get through it? My brothers and I weren't real close. Umm, and my older brother moved out pretty young, and I moved out on my own when I was 16, so... you know, it was one of those things but over the years we've gotten a lot closer and my older brother works with me now and little brother writes songs and plays guitar and is just really talented and he's about to get married. And we've actually become a lot closer and they've never flinched, actually, at fame or anything like that. CB: Is it hard to find inspiration for songs when you, when you ah, I would imagine come increasingly isolated by your success? Are you able to move about in the world and have experiences that can feed you inspiration? JK: I don't guess I've ever had, the only time I've had a problem being inspired is when I stopped being romanced by life. Like my poetry dies when that happens you know, cause I, like the last year or something I haven't been writing as much poetry as I used too, which to me is a real big sign. And I don't think that has as much to do with my fame or my isolation as it had to do with I starting to feel disconnected, and mistrustful as my fame grew....ummm,and I have been working through that. But it is a weird thing when you know, fame is supposed to be so glamorous. You always hear about like "Ohh, the lifestyles of the rich and famous" and the party's and...I... I moved around, like a different school every year since I was a kid so I never had friends in school and then being famous now I'm always on the road. You know,I'm never at a party, I'm never .... CB:Being on the road sure doesn't sound glamorous. JK: Yea, I don't think it really is really glamorous.....I love doing shows. But getting to the shows is really hard. And I haven't really made any more friends than I ever have, I have a few great friends, which I like, but...... CB: And you've been able to keep you close friends? JK: You know, I didn't make any friends until I was about 18 or 19 you know, Steve Poltz, who wrote You Were Meant for Me,with me, is one of my best friends's. and I have maybe one or two other friends and that's really it. It's not like suddenly your friends with you know, Mick Jagger, or you know, it's not like suddenly everybody is calling you going "Jewel you have to come to my party" you know,"We'll fly you there" CB: CB:Mmm, your poetry book, which just had 15 printings, right Jewel. JK: Hmm,mm CB: Well done...do you work through some of it in your poetry and in your songs? Is that how you work through all of these conflicts and dilemmas? JK: Yea, I work through it less in my songs and more in my poetry. My poetry is like has always been very personal and very like makes me working things out. CB: Ahh.... do you do you want to read, hmm, cause we were talking about being on the road and ummm, I thought this poem that you wrote called Tai Pei, well theres Tai Pei one,two and three JK: Right CB:But, hmmm... I thought it was ummm, it was... JK: Should I read the whole thing or part of it or? CB: You just want to read just like the second half of it? JK:Hmm.....mmmm, I am the strange her, with no language but my pen. Sex fills the air. It is humid and ancient. Many lovers have been taken here, taken down exalted, fallen, risen kissed by the purple finger that seeks the plum blossomed Love. I have no Lover only my pen and an answering machine back in the states which no one calls. I am told I am adored by millions but no one calls. JK: CB: Ah,well now Jewel.... JK: Awww, CB: this is really sad JK:: There is happy ones in there CB: It's true... JK: It was a bad night... CB: Ok, as long as you get out of it.... JK: I hired a male prostitute CB: CB: So, in Tai Pei, ah, I was in Tai Pei and I don't want to even tell you, ahh... but, ah ... the person all the guys were going to visit was called the "banana lady". Take it from there JK: CB:You... you've always taken a very public anti-drug stand. Is ...has this always been the case? Based on what you saw, based on what you just always instinctively felt, based on growing up where you did? JK: I'm not real rigid hmm....about it. Like I didn't mean to take a anti-drug thing, statement. But I can't drink cause of my kidney's. so I don't think its ever been a real big option for me cuz my health is a little bit, it's just fragile enough that I've never been able to abuse my body. I also am not a person who enjoys losing control over my mental capacity, so I never enjoyed a buzz hmm,the way I think some people enjoy it. Mm,and I also just feel like it distracts me. I am a very efficient person, and if I have to learn something I want to get to learning it and I've always felt like drinking or drugs would take me down a side road that I'd have to come off of and get back to learning. Hmm, but I am not ah, you know, I'm in the music business, all my friends drink and you know, there's lots of pot around and those kind of things. It's just something I've never really been that into. Hmm though I have been drunk and those things but I've just never been real experimental. CB: When you mm,leave here are you going back to San Diego? Or are you going back to Texas? JK: My boyfriend is a bull rider. So ahh, there's this thing called the PBR, have you heard of it? No... JK: CB: Would the R stand for rodeo? JK: Professional Bull Rider's... actually. It's a bull riding organization, it's separate from the rodeo. CB: I haven't heard of it... but I'd like to hear about it. JK: It's really neat it's ....there, there, it's really a neat ...ah,sport. Umm, CB: So how do you meet a guy who is a bull rider? JK: At a rodeo..... CB: Well, that's logical.... JK: Hmm, I met him at a rodeo in Denver actually. And hmm... CB: He sounds like a really successful bull rider if he has a 2,000 acre ranch. JK: He is! He is the most, the most successful probably cowboy ever, in the history of cowboying. He is really, really, talented at it.. I mean,.he does rough stock, bareback and saddle-bronc as well as bull-riding. CB: Oh, this sounds very neat... JK It's been really fun, it's been really neat.... cuz we have, you know, real similar backgrounds about being raised around the outdoors. But he's also famous in is own field that my fame isn't freaked him out or anything like that. CB: So when your there, do you go riding your in the, what do they have in Texas, prairies? JK: Right ah, the hills, yeah he's been teaching me to team rope, steer and we've just been riding and I've spent a lot of time around riding. CB: So you can control the rope? and, JK: Hmmm CB: Oh Boy.... JK: Well, I'm getting good at it. CB: Well thank you, thank you so much. JK: Thank You, it's, it's nice that you guys have a program like this where you can actually talk. I really appreciate it. CB: Ahh, if you change the channel Jewel's not going to sing. So..we'll be right back. JK: *** CB: Ladies & Gentlemen, or ladies.....Jewel. I will meet you.... In some place..... where the light lends itself to soft repose. JK: Thank You. CB: Thank you soo much. Stay with us, we'll be right back. ....Ohh, Beautiful JK: Thank You *** CB: Before we go......I'd be your best friend if you yodel!? JK: You haven't been yet? CB: I am ...I am, I'm a convert. JK: It's funny, I get more requests for yodeling.I'm writing a book, a second book right now, and like I've actually gotten requests to write about how I started yodeling, and things and it's really odd... CB: Well it so exotic.... JK: It's odd.... CB: It's so surprising JK: We used to sing in hmm, Eskimo Villages when I was a kid. And we did yodeling contests, and these Eskimo villages were dry, no alcohol was allowed, and our,ah, our prize was a bottle of sparkling apple cider and they thought it was alcohol and they started, you know, riot in the village cuz they were trying to trample us to get to the bottle of wine.....so it's funny I never thought yodeling way back then... would become such a thing now. CB: 'Cause your family is Swiss and your father and Grandfather taught you to yodel? JK: Yep....hmmm.....ok, Yodel (she does about a 9 second yodel) CB: AHH!! Personally i thought this article was rather negative, but it would be naieve not to place it b/c of that....you can make up your own minds about it :) here we go : Jewel (25) A saint or a hypocrite ? (writen by E. Vermeulen) She used to live in a volkswagon-van, yodeld song and became world famous. Her fans find her holy. " Jewel is pure and Clean", they said. But Jewel did get her last tour sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger and she is no stranger to diva behauvior. Jewel is 25 and her money runs like water. Fans worship her on internet sites like Angel Standing By and Godess of Spirit ands Youth. Her style ( Versace in the toendra ) is copied by many, especially in the States. For them she is a spiritual guider who seems to translate their feelings on life - life hurts - perfectly. Critics see her as a fake with the charisma of kamille tea, who pretends not to know that she is blond and Beautifull. Wheter it is a smart marketing trick or naieve innocence, Jewel is a phenomona. She is might not be the only female folk-rock preformer that has made it before the age of 21 (Sarah MacLachlan and Fiona Apple), the difference is that Jewel - as she has said herself- made obscene amounts of money after her first album. " Pieces of you released in 1995" she said. " A collection of a of live songs and studio-tapes from Neil Youngs homestudio. I didn't think that people should be expecting to much of it. Besides I had an agreement with the label that I wouldn't be 'launced' but that I would gradually do things myself. The word 'single' never came up, it was supposed to be just a record, that's it. I certainly didn't see any charthits in it myself. When WWSYS was on the verge of becoming a hit, I freaked out". If any one is intrested in reading the rest of this article please email me, and I will transcribe the rest :) If not, I know I will know I am not wasting my time :) Caroline the dutch listnin' Angel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Mar 25 05:36:08 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id FAA07445 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 25 Mar 2000 05:35:48 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200003251035.FAA07445@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: "Rich Long" Subject: Jewel-News: * Jewel in MAXIM Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 22:58:32 -0500 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDAs, Though I would give you all a nice topic to chat about for a day or two. Besides a new cd and a biography , she also published a book of poems- for which she received millions in advance. In the bundle there are lines like "I'm writing this letter to tell you. I don't love you anymore. I don't miss you. I never have." " When you write someone to tell them you do not love them anymore, it always hurts." says Jewel. " I put many layers into what I write. If you read between the lines, there is much more to be found. Many people do not do that." It is a clear sign of confidence to suggest that this 'poetry' is hard to understand. It sounds more like Candlelight (*note--a dutch radio show in which normal folks have their poetry read out loud by some discjockey...so not exactly a complement :( --)..: Listen! Do you hear it? I do. I can feel it. I expect a miracle is coming. Maurio DiPetro from her publisher : "I do not believe Jewel is preoccupied with the question if people think highly of her. When we selected the poems, she did not say once ' not this one, b/c it sounds stupid'. It was more like ' Maybe this would be of help to someone'. I find her more brave than resplendant. You do not have to like her poetry , but she is definitely not cynical. " Such a small amount of things really matter" says Jewel in Entertainment Weekly. I do not want to waste my time on small things. I do not want to look back on my life from my death bed and realise I have worried about things that are unimportant. It wouldn't matter then if I have sold 10 million records or what people thought of my poetry. Everyone says I am successfull . But I do not feel that way. I have achieved certain things , but that doesn't neccasarily make me successfull. It just all happend. I went from homeless to millionaire in 4 years. I admit, I am blond and I have talent. I am very thankfull for that, but that doesn't make me more valuable than someone who lives in a Volkswagon". ---I've got to go out for a while :), I'll try to write a little more tonight:) Caroline the dutch listenin' angel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Mar 25 17:00:11 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id QAA16589 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 25 Mar 2000 16:59:59 -0500 (EST) Received: from pronetisp.net (mail.pronetisp.net [12.23.44.4]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with SMTP id QAA16582 for ; Sat, 25 Mar 2000 16:59:56 -0500 (EST) Received: (qmail 3690 invoked from network); 25 Mar 2000 21:59:50 -0000 Received: from dialin-bing46-27.pronetisp.net (HELO pronet) (12.23.46.27) by mail.pronetisp.net with SMTP; 25 Mar 2000 21:59:50 -0000 Message-Id: <4.2.0.58.20000325165914.009c34a0@127.0.0.1> X-Sender: ducksoup/pop.pronetisp.net@127.0.0.1 X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.0.58 Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 17:02:13 -0500 To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: High priced "Ride With The Devil" video out now!!??!! The site does not say if these are in stock right now vs being a pre-order. (I am almost guessing it's pre-order, as other videos they are selling say "usually ships within 24 hours", while it does not say that for RWTD....on the other hand, their "advance order/ future release" site does not list it.....further confusing the issue) For those unfamiliar with this concept, "Priced For Rental" means you can buy the video, but it WILL cost you big bucks. It's priced at $89.98 but they have it at 20% off at cdnow.com for $71.98. (I'd wait for the "priced for consumer purchase" release if I were you) I guess what this means is that it should be out somewhat soon for rental only (unless you want to spend big bucks to buy one), although my local Hollywood Video does not show it on their list of releases for the next three weeks. So, if anyone else can dig up any "release for rental" information or any substantial info, it would help. If you do dig up info and post about it, please mention where you found it (web address too). On a related note, it was posted on alt.fan.jewel that some online stores were listing a DVD/video of Ride With The Devil being available on May 15th, but the post was not clear and you can take it he meant it was to be a UK release (England). he did not post any web addresses where he found this info. I just posted about how someone mentioned on alt.fan.jewel that Ride With The Devil would be out on DVD & video on May 15th, and how I myself found it for sale now on CDNow.com for $70+ Well, it turns out it's likely a different film with the exact same name that came out in 1998. Honest. Steve Cayford emailed me mentioning that he found this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305263515/qid=954029914/sr=1-2/103-7 153831-4961465 at amazon.com It's a film that came out in 1998 starring Scott Shaw and Julie Strain. My bet is that the one that was mentioned on alt.fan.jewel was this film too. I have a good excuse though, on cdnow.com where it mentions the film for sale, it has a picture of the soundtrack CD of Jewel's version of RWTD and mentions it as a "related product". It also says "1998" while Jewel's film came out in 1999. So, it looks like we probably have to wait a while yet for Jewel's Ride With The Devil to come out on video/DVD. However, this brings up a "beware". When it DOES come out and you order one online or at a video store, make sure you get the right one. The only place you can get it other than at San Diego area CD stores is direct from STAR FM at their website at https://www.histar.com. We also have a handy link on the jeweljk.com website calendar to the Star FM website, where you can find all the info about this release. Both Jewel & Steve Poltz contributed live tracks recorded at this concert last December. The proceeds from this release help support "Becky's House", which provides a safe place for victims of domestic violence in San Diego. #2- "Ride With The Devil" on DVD &/or VHS: On May 15th, "Ride With The Devil", Ang Lee's acclaimed Civil War movie, featuring Jewel in the lead female role as Sue Lee Shelly, will be released worldwide to video rental stores. It should be available on both DVD & VHS. Most video rental stores (at least here in the states) are carrying extensive DVD selections now. What this means is that it should be very easy to find in your local video rental store. Can you actually buy it? The answer is yes, but since this is NOT a commercial release date, it is priced at "rental-agreement" prices, which is approximately $75.00. Later this year, after its initial run as a rental, it will be commercially released to the public at normal prices. My advice is NOT to buy it on May 15th. Rent it if you're dying to see it & buy it later this year at a lower price, if you'd enjoy owning a copy. JMerch is looking into carrying this. So quite likely, you'll be able to order it direct from Jewel's website when it is commercially released. I'll keep you informed. I have no idea if additional footage or anything extra will be featured on the DVD version. This is often the case, but we are not directly involved in this, so we'll all have to wait & see on that. #3 Jewel on NICK News: Jewel will be featured on Nickelodeon Network's "Nick News" on Sunday April 2nd. We have an 8:30PM EST broadcast time, but check locally to be sure of broadcast time in your area. Yes, she's been on this before, but this is a NEW broadcast, not a repeat. #4 Joy Eden Harrison: I know many EDAs are fans of Joy. She'll be making a rare return to Java Joe's in San Diego on Sunday April 2nd on a double bill with Ripley Caine. You can call JJ's at 619-523-0356. The new location is 1956 Bacon Street in Ocean Beach, just around the corner from the old location on Newport Ave. If you still don't know about Joy, educate yourself at Jewel's website. (Click "guest artists" & you'll find more info on Joy & other highly recommended artists.) Joy's "Unspoken" CD was my favorite album release of 1999. She also has a website with several audio files for your listening pleasure at www.joyedenharrison.com. Also, EAST COAST fans (& survivors of the 1998 Living Room Tour) will be very happy to hear that Joy will finally be touring the East Coast with her band this June! Dates to be announced. I'll keep you informed.
