We've already fixed the links on Jewel's site to go directly to the correct page, but if you go to AmericanGreetings.com main page, you'll need to click the box in the upper right hand corner that says "Celebrity Smooch". This is simple enough to do, but if you prefer going directly to the page where you can send Jewel a "SmoochMail", go to this URL directly: http://www.americangreetings.com/promo/cs/index.pd Websitemasters, please update your links accordingly if you want it to be even easier for everyone to go directly to the "Celebrity Smooch" page. Thanks to everyone who takes a minute to send Jewel a SmoochMail between now & Valentine's Day! It's FREE & very simple to do. Every time you do it, you will be helping to raise the contribution to HGH's Clearwater Project. We had a HUGE turnout last year, and I hope for the same. And don't worry. All the information you send is strictly CONFIDENTIAL. No one will know who is how old or where they are from. REMEMBER to include BOTH: 1) your age 2) your location (state for US, country for outside US) If there is more than one EDA in your household, feel free to e-mail me all the ages and the location in one e-mail. The results will be posted in about two weeks. Hope you all enjoy this again. I'll just brace myself for the 200+ e-mails coming tomorrow :-). Thanks. To get tickets you pretty much have to live in Austin. See this link for more info: http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/faq/faq.html#12 For all you Austin EDA's, here is the info you've been waiting for: KLRU has updated their answering machine, and you need to listen to KGSR 107.1 FM tomorrow and Friday. They (KGSR) will make the announcement when tickets are available outside the KLRU studios on the NW corner of the UT-Austin campus. Tickets are limited to 2 per person, so if I even get to the studio at the right time I CANNOT get tickets for anyone else. For a map to the studio, go to http://yp.yahoo.com then change your location to Austin, TX or type in the ZIP code 78705. Then search for KLRU. It will take you to an interactive map that you can print. Email me if you have any questions, want some specific directions or if you would like to work out a KGSR listening schedule/phone tree. (w/ steve of course) YWMFM (just her and guitar... and not too much baby voice) ROSY AND MICK (w/ atz lee on harmonica, much better with the band) YOUR IN CLEVELAND TODAY!!!YES YES!(those of you who know me can imagine how far out of my seat i jumped... it was an excellent version) LIFE UNCOMMON DOWN SO LONG EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEONE (SOMETIME) LOVE ME JUST LEAVE ME ALONE WHO WILL SAVE YOUR SOUL encore: ANGEL STANDING BY she was introduced and walked out in a plain black top and pants, minimal makeup, and straight, simple brushed hair her mood was jolly, although her voice was not quite up to par, nonetheless it was a great show. she begain with angel, her voice cracked a few times, so i doubt it will make the broadcast. then she started talking about texas. she has lived here for a month. she talked about how she likes meat. "i just like the taste of it... a lot!" how much she likes the barbeque in texas, etc. she made the same joke about how she never thought she would spend much time in texas because alaska is so much bigger that she did this summer at the woodlands show. the funniest thing she said was, and look out woody, "i would eat *plywood* with bbq sauce!" thank goddess there was no mexico story, and an abbreviated story about meeting steve and how he is the best song writer she's ever known, etc. he talked about his show tonight at la zona rosa. she also made a funny joke about how crazy she was acting..."it's the heroin talking" (note the word joke, please) overall, it was a really good show... the broadcast later this year will be only thirty minutes, but with no commercials. hopefully they will put some of the new stuff, and not just the sappy spririt stuff on the show. remember there are no commercials on PBS, so there will be more than three songs :-) it was sooooo nice to meet other EDA's. Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel's Austin gig! To: "'Jewel list'" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Since no one else has posted about this yet, I guess I'll go ahead and send a quick message about it. As most of you know by now, Jewel and her band were in Austin this past weekend to do a taping of Austin City Limits, the show on PBS. After waiting over 3 hours in line, myself and a few others with me got in the door. Jewel had an outstanding show, playing almost 2 hours....the longest set I've seen from her to date...even compared to her tour shows. She opened with 3 new songs (yes, these WERE really new), then played SIBTW, then the band came out. They did I'm guessing about 10 more songs then. Including You're in Cleveland Today, all the singles, and she closed with Angel Standing By as an encore. The sound was phenomenal, and better than any other shows I've seen of hers. The audience was restricted to 431 people do to fire marshall codes...so the setting was extremely intimate. If it weren't for Luna enduring hours and hours of standing in line to get the tickets (with the flu!), I would have never gotten to see Jewel yesterday. So a big thanks goes out to her for that. Afterwards, I bumped into Steve and the band again and got all their autographs on the program they handed out before the show (minus Brady's). Even got Atz to sign it. He was there with them, and did perform one new song with Jewel on stage that night. Also got a few pics too, but unfortunately had to leave before Jewel made her way out of the studio, assuming she was still in there, which I think she was. But to see a show like this (the unedited version I mean) is something most never get an opportunity to, and especially during an artists peak time of their career. And while they're not even on tour, and won't be for who knows how much longer. Jewel's voice was notably weak I'm guessing from being off stage for so long, and she was drinking alot of water also to clear her throat. Even after starting over on Angel Standing By, she still had some difficulties hitting the high notes...but on other songs like Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, she did quite well (in the yelling parts). Steve was having a good ole time as always too. I met a few new EDA's also, that was cool. And one EDA who has been on the list since 1995! Not often I find someone whose been here longer than myself. Overall I'd guess there were about 10 EDA's there...pretty good turnout being that only 431 people were there altogether. So there ya go, all of yall get those VCR's ready come June or July when they decide to air it. Unfortunately it's going to be cut to 1/2 hour show, so I'm thinking they'll only air about 5-6 songs tops. Oh well...I'm sure they'll pick good ones and leave the heroin stories out of it. ;-) Derrick PS...she opened with Fly to Me Angel, technically not a new song, but not often sung anyway...and she did yodel some in that song, as usual...but no chime bells this time around. Here's the answers to most of the questions & related meaningless trivia: "Break Me" A great electric tune with band & powerful singing. This one has been hidden away for awhile. She's only performed it once before & that was right here in Wallingford CT back in September of 1997. It was part of an extremely experimental mini-concert played for local radio contest winners at The Oakdale Theater on the afternoon of her concert there. The half hour set was all electric, with the band she had on that tour, & Jewel first played "Break Me" there. (She also did "Under The Water" & the only electric band arrangement of "Everything Breaks" that she's ever attempted, among other treats.) "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" She wrote this rockin electric tune on the second leg of the Spirit Tour last year. The music was based on a very catchy electric guitar riff Jewel was fixated with for several weeks & then developed into a song. She first performed it on August 15 in St Paul & played it almost every night for the rest of the tour. "Rosy & Mick" "Stephenville" These two are among a batch of songs that are....ta da!..... ....brand spankin new. Cheers, Alan Only 5 Days Left! Pop star Jewel said she didn't mind taking time away from the massive crowds and grueling reporters to sing and talk to a small group of Terrace Hills Middle School students. Especially since she was able to do it from her Los Angeles hotel room two minutes after waking up. Thirty advanced language arts students got to speak with the Grammy winner via a telephone conference Thursday morning at their school library. The teens couldn't see Jewel, but students said talking to the star and hearing her voice sing a few notes was enough for them. List Moderator Note - the author of this article is wrong. Jewel has never won a Grammy award. "you didn't get to actually see her and shake her hand and see if she was in her pajamas," said eight-grader Nikki Vonweller, "But I'm still gonna tell my mom I got to meet her. We got to talk to her. That's more than most people got to do." The phone visit was actually a prize for eight-grader Josh Campbell, whose poem was selected by Jewel from 6,000 others that were entered in a nationwide contest sponsored by Scholastic Book Clubs. The club publishes various reading materials for young people such as Scholastic Magazine. Students in teacher Jared Boyett's class typically write letters every Friday to musicians, politicians and community members, Boyett said. In November, they had the option of writing poems to Jewel. About 10 students participated in the contest and Josh was the lucky winner, he said. "i like writing," said Josh, who admits he is not a huge Jewel fan. "It is a way for me to express my emotions." Jewel shares the teen's passion and said that is why she got involved in the contest. The musician is also a poet who recently released "a night without armor," a compilation of her own poems designed for young readers. Each of the Terrace Hills students in Boyett's class got a signed copy of the book, as well as a copy of Jewel's latest CD, "Spirit." Jewel said she also likes to talk to young people in hopes of inspiring them to express themselves though words. "Writing has always helped me keep track of myself and keep track of how I am feeling," said Jewel, whose last name is Kilcher. "I love to see kids writing. It gives you a compass inside of you that helps you navigate." Jewel said she needed that direction growing up. The 25-year-old started writing and performing at age 6 with her parents for locals and tourists in Alaska. It was in anchorage that Jewel learned to master yodeling, a skill many of her fans admire. But some tough times hit the youngster. Her parents divorced when she was about 8 years old. She said writing gave her comfort until things started looking up. In 1995, Jewel released her first album, "Pieces of You" and was named Best New Artist by American Music. "Spirit," her second album, debuted in 1998 and sold more than 11 million copies. Jewel said "Spirit" inspires inner strength and self-determination and send the message that it is OK to be who you are in a world where being thin and pretty is often No. 1. She shared that message with terrace Hills teens "I'm pretty scruffy sometimes," Jewel told the students. "I don't always brush my hair when i walk out of a room and I'm not perfectly behaved. I don't know one person who is." (Run Jewel run! :-) Now I know each of the charities involved is a very worthy cause, and part of me objects to the nature of this contest, that being competing one charity against another for deserving donations. However, it is NOT a winner-take-all "contest". Depending on how many votes they get, EACH of the charities can win up to $10,000 while the "winner" with the most votes gets the $25,000. So, by the looks of the present standings each of the other charities certainly seems to be in position of winning thousands of dollars from American Greetings too :-) I myself have voted for each of the charities at least a few times (one in particular that rings true to my heart got more votes than the others) but I did vote more times for Jewel's charities, as they are not as well known as the others and likely don't get the at-large donations that some of the other charities do. Having said all that, and with less than 37 to go in this Celebrity Smooch, I would like to see us as a group put this thing away and clinch this thing for Higher Ground For Humanity/Clearwater Project. (after all, you never know, some other fan club kind of list for one of the other celebrities or a charity mailing list might be planning the same for their cause and have a last minute rush and end up blowing right by Jewel/HGH/Clearwater and winning this thing down the stretch). So, I say let's clinch this thing right now! Head to http://www.americangreetings.com/promo/cs/index.pd and vote! Remember, all of the charities are going to be winners :-) Mike :-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Feb 13 13:35:32 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id NAA02365 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 13 Feb 2000 13:34:34 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200002131834.NAA02365@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 13:21:39 -0500 From: MrBB To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-"What's Simple Is True"- not so simple facts Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, A few astute listeners wrote asking me questions about the various versions of "What's Simple Is True". The most common question is whether the movie version is the same as the single & MTV video version. Good question & oh, if it was only that simple... ;-) Since, I figure others are also interested in the various versions of this, here's the deal, and yes, it's very confusing, so you may need to read this over & over... There are 3 significantly different studio versions of "What's Simple Is True". They are: 1) The original album version. This was recorded & mixed during the 1998 sessions for Jewel's 2nd album "Spirit". For all future reference purposes, known as "the album version". 2) The radio remix version. This is the single version. This was remixed in 1999 & released as a radio single. (For collectors, the single was only released to radio stations & is catalogued as Atlantic PRCD 9044.) This version is also the one used in two significant other places: It's the version used for the video of the song (as shown on MTV) AND is the same version on the "Ride With The Devil" movie soundtrack CD. For all future reference purposes, known as "the single version". And just when you thought you had a grip on all this: 3) The "RWTD" version. This is the version that plays while the credits are rolling in the movie. It's yet another mix with somewhat different instrumentation than the single version. Surprisingly, it's NOT the version on the soundtrack CD & is only available on the movie itself while the credits roll. For all future reference purposes, known as "the movie version" (even though it is not the version on the soundtrack CD). That's the not so simple facts on the various versions of "What's Simple Is True". Hope that answers all related questions about this song, other than "MrBB, what the *@#% are you babbling about?" ;-) Alan There's only 2 more days to sustain your cybersmooching momentum, so please keep up your collective efforts. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi All, On Feb 9th, Jewel taped a new show hosted by Candice Bergen called "Exhale". She interviewed Jewel for an hour & a few NEW songs were performed live. I'm not sure how this will be edited, but I can tell you it's one of the best interviews ever done with Jewel & there's a performance of "Break Me" that had many in attendance choked up & teary eyed, including Candice Bergen. The new Oxygen Network will broadcast Jewel's appearance next Thursday, Feb 24th. Check your local cable listings for time & availability in your area. I went to the Oxygen Network Website www.oxygen.com ( I believe there is also info for watching the shows on the computer) to find out when "Exhale" airs and it says it airs Mon-Thurs 10-11pm and then repeats at 1-2am and on the weekend 7-8pm. When you go here www.oxygen.com/who/programming/ontv/index.html it says.... "Exhale" is our nightly hour-long conversation (it's definitely not your average talk show) among Emmy-winning actress Candice Bergen and the most intresting people of today from actors to architects. It's the smart, savvy alternative to the standard late night talk show fare. And at www.oxygen.com/exhale it talks about Candice and how she takes photos of each guest so check back to see gallery and has a message board to recommend guests. I called my cable company to see if we carry it they have yet to so I will miss the show unless I can find a friend with the channel or one of you nice angels will copy/trade with me. You can read more about it at the Grammy Awards official web site, http://www.grammy.com/awards/index.html then click the link that says "The Best Show You'll Never See" Although there isn't much more about Jewel, there is a photo of her performing with Moby. That duet would be a pretty intriguing piece of Angelfood, don't you think? Since I don't know whats been posted already by EDAs, I'll probably repeat some common knowledge... On Monday night Jewel & Moby performed together in LA for MusiCares, which was honoring Elton John. She sang a version of Elton's 1st (1969) hit "Your Song", which many of the older EDAs might remember. Earlier that day, she also taped a segment for an upcoming A&E Biography show on Merle Haggard & an upcoming MTV spot for SonicNet.com. Check the jeweljk.com calendar periodically for updates on broadcast times. Other than that, I just wanted to let you know that I will soon be sending along a message from HGH/Clearwater as promised. There's a bunch of details being worked out & we want to thoroughly update you, so please be patient. All the info is good, good, good & will be worth the wait, I assure you! For those who haven't checked lately, we do have yet another great set of photos up this week so have a look. We're also revamping the calendar on high end, so as to be more easily accessible & to enhance it's look with flash. Also, don't forget to enter our current contest if you've yet to do so! Things are busy here, but I plan to take in shows at Java Joe's the next few nights, so stop by & say hi if you're in the area. I'll likely not be back to you until I return home next week. Cheers! (for those that did not know, you can read back copies of all list posts and digests at http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives while Jewel-news archives can be seen at http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel-news ) She even has some angelfood too (the JewelStock tapes for one).
