It's an intimate epic, contradictory in its ability to perfectly recreate a distant historical era with intense, sensual immediacy and populate it with characters who remain complexly human, even when their actions seem most situationally inhumane. Based on Daniel Woodrell's novel "Woe to Live On," the movie wins immediate points just by choosing to tell its story from the less traditionally defensible position of a group of Southern "bushwhackers"--civilian militia groups conducting their own little war against "the forces of Northern aggression", and ranging on bloody guerilla forays across the occupied area of the Kansas/Missouri border. Poor but proud second-generation German-American Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire) chooses to side with his childhood friend, Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich), after Jack Bull's slaveholder parents are burned from their hereditary plantation, even though -- as Jake's immigrant father reminds him -- most Southerners still consider "Dutchies" like Jake to be slightly less valuable than the "niggers" they want to keep on owning. But the struggle he soon finds himself engaged in is even less cut and dried than it initially appears--especially after Jake ends up spending the winter hiding out in a hole with Jack Bull, war widow Sue Lee (Jewel) and former slave Daniel Holt (Jeffrey Wright), who's paying off his debt to the "master" who freed him by acting as a scout for the same people he should logically be trying to take revenge on. Jake's tentative, beautifully unsentimental realization that he has more in common with Holt -- a fellow outsider -- than any of his white Southern compatriots is just one of Ride With the Devil's many hidden treasures...like Wright's angry, dignified reticence, or Jewel's unschooled but earthy performance as a woman just beginning to see that her husband's murder has liberated her from being seen as any living person's chattel, or Ulrich's instinctive dissection of one aristocratic Southern Romantic's deathwish. This film boils what we've been trained to consider a simple case of right vs. wrong right down to its tangled roots, leaving us in a place where neighbor kills lifelong neighbor over a difference of opinion and some lines on a map; where mercy becomes an insult, and even when you suspect you're on what will inevitably become the losing side, you keep on fighting anyway. Maybe, like Paul Verhoeven's blistering take on American consumer culture in Robocop, it takes a transplanted sensibility like Lee's to re-examine the underside of what's become almost as big a myth as Gone With the Wind's nostalgic longing for some distant, literally whitewashed vision of the Courtly South: the idea of the Civil War as a pre-World War Two "good fight", rather than the violent birthpangs of a true melting-pot democracy that STILL hasn't quite brought itself to term. Simply put, a gorgeous and enduring piece of work. shad 96c / 3B CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. / sarah slean / steve poltz / emm gryner / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. I am pleased to invite you to a special concert taking place on January 16th. This show is special because of the artists and the enviroment in which it is presented. On January 16th at 5pm we are pleased to present a special double bill with Edie Carey & Nini Camps both from New York. If you want the basics you can scroll to the bottom. This concert is part of a homegrown series called Longfellow St. Concerts. Longfellow St. Concerts is a series of shows held in our home. Our goal is to present some of the best acoustic musicians in the business, in an intimate, comfortable enviroment. This type of show has long been the standard through the middle of the country where folk clubs are few and far between. For years artists like Greg Brown, Christine Lavin, and others have opted to play shows in peoples homes rather than risk playing a show in a local bar. Because we live in one of the richest music enviroments in the country we have been not been given the privelege of seeing artists in such a small, intimate setting. Because we saw how special some of these shows are, we decided to bring this unique experience of live music to the city. Our concerts have an attendace limit of 30 people making each show a special experience for audience and artist alike. It is very hard to describe how special these shows are. The only way to know what they are like is for you to come one. Once you have seen the joy in the artists faces you will never want to miss a show. Seeing an Edie Carey show is like watching someone read a diary of their deepest thoughts. Whether singing about an enveloping love, or talking about her childhood pet Edie has a wonderful ability to make you think you're sitting down with a life long friend. Her songs are overflowing with emotion. From the mother's grief of "Black Wool Dress" to the love, and joy of "I Never Thought I'd Say This" to the self loathing of "If I were you" Edie's songs take you on a complete emotional rollercoaster. "Edie Carey has the voice, the songs, and the presence that will take her right up alongside such stars as Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco," Matt Smith of Club Passim. "She effortlessly lures people into her musical spell, and then she continues to entrance when the music stops." http://www.folkweb.com/ediecarey http://www.mp3.com/ediecarey Nini combines the excitement of a rock concert, the intimacy of a diary, and the passion of a hot Miami night. Her songs rock with a passion, and intelligence rarely found in todays musicians. When she sings a song like "I Thought I Knew You," there is no doubt that you are hearing everything she has. Nini's songs range from a the love of "Mi Amor" to the NiNi Camps, a native of Miami, left the palm trees and espresso of her hometown for the concrete island of Manhattan in the early '90's. Before long, she was playing solo acoustic shows at the Bitter End and other NYC venues. Nini's folky, pop songwriting, laced with a hint of her Cuban heritage, attracted a large audience, as well as some of the best musicians in town. So, in the summer of 1997, NiNi formed her band, LOVE PIE! LOVE PIE's recently released, self-titled debut album has been receiving rave reviews as well as radio airplay. "Her songwriting is as solid as her guitar playing is sure...she rocks. Nini is at her best playing hard with style. Just good music." In addition to the 800 x 600 version, we've now put the 1024 x 768 highest resolution version online for your enjoyment. It's simple to choose from the entry page at www.jeweljk.com We're also giving away several tourbooks from the 1999 Spirit Tour in the newest website contest. These tourbooks are quite nice & are autographed by Jewel. It's real simple to enter. Just visit the site, click contest & enter. Good luck! Also, this is old news to most of the SoCal EDAs I'm sure, but others might be interested in the fact that Java Joe's, well known as a focal point of great San Diego music, has moved from thier Newport Ave location. They didn't move far though, just around the corner to 1956 Bacon Street. It's a larger room with a bigger stage area but still small enough to be intimate.Steve Poltz is involved with the new location & it promises to continue bringing countless great performances to Ocean Beach. I'm also happy to hear the Living Room Concert scene seems to be raising its head again in various areas of the country. One of the things I plan on doing sometime soon is putting together the long awaited Future Folklore Volume 4. This will contain some highlights from the 1998 LRT which featured many wonderful performances from Joy Eden Harrison & Lisa Sanders. If you don't know about these two artists, you should! Both have excellent (fairly new) albums out. Joy's "Unspoken" CD was my personal favorite release this past year & I highly recommend it. Lisa, who won the prestigious San Diego Music Award for Best Acoustic artist two years in a row now, has just released her second album "Life Takes You Flying" & all who saw her on the 98LRT will discover fully realized versions of much of the incredible material she was then unvieling to The EDAs. It's very easy to get to from NYC or the surrounding area by car or train and the music won't start until around 8:30 or 9:00 so you'll have plenty of time to get there if you're coming from work or school. Jason is an awesome artist; I know you'll love him! Besides, you'll get to meet Dan Stark who is one of the only (if not the only!) still-subscribed original member of the Jewel list! :-) Email me right away at w1ggy2@aol.com if you'd like to come and I'll send you directions. Early on, he broke away from the yoke of strictly Asian filmmaking to veer off in a different direction each time out, and this is the case with his latest movie. This time, Lee tackles the Western genre with "Ride With the Devil," a very personal epic about a series of skirmishes on the periphery of the Civil War. But despite the period costumes and setting and its storyline, "Ride With the Devil" is very much in sync with every other Ang Lee movie. Once again, as in "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "The Ice Storm" (1997), he presents his usual social consciousness, this time in yet another disguised and fragmentary form. His films are all about human nature. "Personal epic" might seem a self-contradicting expression, but it suits "Ride With the Devil" in that the film has sweep and grandeur and runs a leisurely (and very slow) 138 minutes but also has a relatively slim storyline. What's complicated about the piece is the density of its characters, their often clashing feelings and how they interact. Despite its periodic outbursts of action, "Ride With the Devil" is a multiple-character study, examining the battles that people are willing to wage not only on behalf of their own survival, but also on behalf of loyalty. Like most people, these characters never gave much thought to the notion of loyalty until they were tested. The film is set in 1861, along the Kansas-Missouri border, at the height of the Civil War but actually far from the military battles between the North and the South. Missouri, a slave-holding state, has sided with the Union, a situation which has given rise to the Bushwhackers, young Missouri men not in any army, who fight for their beliefs -- which means that the situation is one of friends fighting friends, neighbors fighting neighbors and no one trusting anyone. The fact that they don't wear uniforms only adds to the confusion. The movie, adapted by James Schamus (who worked with Lee on "The Ice Storm") from the book "Woe To Live On" by Daniel Woodrell, is about the activities among five young Bushwhackers and the friendship between two in particular -- a friendship that mutates amid all the chaos. Ride With the Devil 3 stars Cast: Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, Jeffrey Wright, Simon Baker and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The friends are Jack "Bull" Chiles (Skeet Ulrich), whose father is a prosperous plantation owner in southern Missouri who is murdered by Union marauders and whose farm is destroyed, and Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire), the Americanized son of German immigrants. Just between these two young men, you have a lot of issues that the film takes time sorting out. The others are Pitt Mackeson (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), your requisite sociopath who adds more luggage to the piece; Black John (James Caviezel), more or less the gang's leader, and George Clyde (Simon Baker), a Southern gentleman with his slave Daniel Holt (Jeffrey Wright) in tow. Holt is unofficially the sixth Bushwhacker here, and the fact that a slave would be fighting on behalf of the South adds another wrinkle. While there is plenty of action in "Ride With the Devil," particularly in Lee's masterful staging of the Quantrill Raid, the movie operates mostly as a work of observations, accompanied by dialogue that's never real-sounding but feels written and rehearsed, lending a sort of rustic poetry to the piece. A major subplot involves a young war widow named Sue Lee (singer Jewel in her acting debut and turning in a genuine performance), whose husband was murdered three days after their wedding. When the boys hole up on the outskirts of her farm for the winter, Sue Lee provides them with food, becoming involved first with Jack and then, when it's discovered she's pregnant, with Jake. Corny as it might sound, the movie details how the experiences of war and first love -- and the responsibilities of both -- turn Jake into a man. While I appreciate Lee's near single-minded attention to detail, a shorter film would have been easier to sit through and to understand. But then, without those rich details, the smoky-colored "Ride With the Devil" wouldn't be personal -- and wouldn't belong to Ang Lee, for whom it is another exercise in the tenuousness of life and the ambiguities of human behavior. --WebTV-Mail-13261-1219 X-URL-Title: Sacbeat Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit http://www.sacbee.com:80/sacbeat/news/sacbeat02_20000107.html --WebTV-Mail-13261-1219-- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jan 10 19:04:14 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA09556 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 10 Jan 2000 19:03:47 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200001110003.TAA09556@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 12:06:27 -0500 From: Mike Connell To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * ORIGINAL You Were Meant For Me video on MTV2 soon :-) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) Well, not tooooo soon actually, but there IS a guaranteed showing coming up, assuming a December USA Today was correct. Many of you newer subscribers may not know this, but there was an original/first video of "You Were Meant For Me" (YWMFM) that was directed by Sean Penn, using the "Juan Patino version" from the YWMFM/Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra promo CD. This is the same YWMFM version that is on the Rare Angels angelfood tape many of you have, and the video in no way at all resembles the 1996 video most of you have likely seen. It was filmed October 10th 1995 (the same day she taped VH1 Duets with Melissa Etheridge) and was released shortly thereafter. Anyway, for those of you that get this channel, I read in a late December USA Today that beginning on January 1st 2000, MTV2 would begin showing EVERY video that MTV aired since its' inception in the early 1980s. (Note, that is MTV2 that is airing these videos, not MTV). There are over 20,000 different videos they are running, and they are showing them in alphabetical order by title of the song, not by artist. The article in the paper said it would take until March or so to run them all, and being a "Y" song the original You Were Meant For Me video would obviously air near the end of the run of 20,000. This will be a RARE taping opportunity for collectors and folks who have not seen this video yet (like me). Could someone who gets MTV2 verify that they are doing this (airing all of the videos), and keep us posted as to when the "Y" videos begin to run? Jewel & the Cowboy Junkies actually have a lot in common, besides mutual respect, heartfelt music & great female vocals. They also share a lot of friends & road personel, including live sound & monitor engineers, lighting directors, transportation & other tour management personel. If anyone here has never checked this band out, we highly encourage you to do so! They'll be touring North America again in about a month (see dates link below) & have a great new album out of difficult to find "Rarities & B-sides". Have a look at their feature, listen to some audio & click on over to their site (also a very cool site with some hilarious content as well as info) from the feature on jeweljk.com.The CJ feature is up on lowend & the 800x600 highend version, so everyone can access it. It'll be a little while before it's up on the high res version. Also, & this is specifically directed to new EDAs, we have several previous features within this part of Jewel's site, where you can educate yourself & listen to other great artists you may not be aware of. For instance, you'll hear Steve Poltz mentioned quite a bit on this list & you can get a brief accurate history of Steve here. There's several features including Joy Eden Harrison, a wonderful jazz-influenced singer songwriter whose music developed through the same InnerChange/San Diego scene as Jewel & we also feature Mossy Kilcher, Jewel's Aunt, who recorded a charming double album of original Alaskan folk songs (back in the late 70's) that was an early musical influence on Jewel. So stop by jeweljk.com & enjoy the Cowboy Junkies & these other talented musicians. They've all brought endless enjoyment to me & you may discover something just as enjoyable for yourself! ENTERTAINMENT POLISHING ACT Dave Larsen DAYTON DAILY NEWS 01/09/2000 Dayton Daily News CITY Page 1C (Copyright 2000) Can Jewel shine in a (silver) screen setting? TORONTO - Rumors circulated that Jewel acted like a diva on the set of her film debut, Ride With the Devil. One published report said that the pop singer frequently retreated to her trailer and wouldn't eat lunch with her fellow cast and crew members. She did so at the behest of the film's director, Ang Lee. `Ang had me eat lunch separate from everybody, because I couldn't get back into character as easy as the other guys,' Jewel said during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. `As much as there were people around me, I was really having to struggle.' The Grammy-nominated singer makes her movie debut in the epic Civil War drama as Sue Lee Shelley, a young widow who comes between two childhood friends fighting for the pro-Southern Bushwhackers, played by accomplished actors Skeet Ulrich and Tobey Maguire. Adapted from Daniel Woodrell's novel Woe to Live On, Ride With the Devil opened Friday at the Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs. Jewel had no professional acting experience, but Lee felt she was right for the film's only female role because of her intelligence and personality. `Can she act? I spent about three months observing and participating in her acting lessons, doing screen tests,' Lee said. `Finally, after all the meetings with the other actresses, I said she's the risk I want to take. It's not really a great risk because that part doesn't carry the movie. It's not like Tobey's part.' The Taiwan-born director, whose credits include the acclaimed films Sense and Sensibility and The Ice Storm, gave Jewel very simple and direct instructions. He spent an extra hour a day working with her on her character and accent. `The first part of shooting is problematic because she's inexperienced and she's working with some of the most talented young American actors, and they're all very experienced,' Lee said. `But once she would overcome that stage and re-pace herself with the shooting schedule - it's another profession - she's quite good and she's very devoted to the part.' Born Jewel Kilcher , the 25-year-old singer-songwriter-poet was raised in Alaska and discovered at San Diego's Innerchange coffeehouse, where she was performing to standing-room-only crowds. Her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, has sold more than 10 million copies. Her second album, 1998's Spirit, has sold more than 4 million copies. In November, she released a top-selling Christmas album, Joy: A Holiday Collection. Casually attired in dark gray khaki pants and a loose blue T- shirt, with a diamond-studded cross around her neck, Jewel was pleasant and laughed easily. She was honest about her ability as an actress and didn't seem at all like those rumors portrayed her. To prepare for her role, Jewel took the unique approach of writing several songs from Sue Lee's perspective. One of her compositions, What's Simple Is True, plays over the film's end credits. `I was not a trained actress,' Jewel said. `I didn't have any method skills at getting into character. You're trying to get to an emotional place in yourself, and you want the quickest route to it, and my most established path is music. When I sing I immediately feel an emotion I'm singing about. It immediately overwhelms me.' Jewel needed to convey the unspoken emotions of her character, who loses a lover and has a baby over the course of the film. `I couldn't count on the dialogue to get me there in the movie,' she said. `I had to come in with that. So the best way for me to do it was I wrote a song about losing, and it just put me in that mood immediately. And I was able to walk in with it.' Working without the benefit of an audience was difficult for the fledgling actress. `I've been in front of an audience my whole life, and my whole show's been geared on reading a crowd,' she said. `I have a lot of skill at reading a crowd, and what I give them is relative to what they're needing and wanting. I didn't have a crowd. I would have been better at theater, probably. I feed off of a crowd. My humor and my spontaneity really come from a live interaction of having a new audience to impress every night and having to be fresh every night.' As Lee indicated, another problem was readjusting her body clock. Jewel typically performs in the evening, giving her all in a two- hour burst. Film shoots begin as early as 5 a.m. and can stretch on for 14 or more hours, depending on the production schedule. `I was spent by noon every day on the film, because I was used to this sort of different pacing,' she said. `Ang's the one that actually noticed this different rhythm about me. He took me aside and said you need to go longer, slower burn. That's just something I hadn't thought about, and it really changed everything for me.' Lee also taught Jewel little things, like to keep her chin down and not move her hands or eyes a lot, because such movements look exaggerated on the screen. `Technically, that's stuff you just pick up,' Ulrich said. `That's no big deal. You can work through that. But the thing about her performance is that it doesn't stand apart from the film, and that's why it works.' Ulrich, whose credits include As Good As It Gets and Scream, speculated that an actress of some prestige or stature might have overdone that part and made it something more than the film. `I learned very early on with Ang that you can trust him,' Ulrich said. `He's not doing things on a whim. He's not casting celebrities because they're celebrities. He's casting the people that he wants to do the part because he sees something in them that's right.' Acting has always been part of Jewel's plan. Her agency contracts cover film as well as music, but she waited until she had successfully established one career before embarking on another. Ride With the Devil is more than she could have ever hoped for in a first role. `I don't think many people ever get that kind of opportunity,' Jewel said. `To work with someone like Ang, to work with a cast like I did and to work with such a good script that was so artistic. You don't get more than that.' However, her fame added to the pressure of the production. `I've had my whole life to get good at music,' Jewel said. `I didn't have to learn in front of people, more than a drunk person in a bar. . . . I have to learn this in the public eye.' Reviews have been favorable of Jewel's performance. Entertainment Weekly 's Lisa Schwarzbaum wrote that `crooning poetess Jewel acquits herself pleasantly in her film debut.' Variety said she `suggests a calm, determined confidence.' Still, Jewel doesn't expect her transition from music to film to be an easy one. `I think the criticism will be just and unjust,' she said. `To say that I'm good at music, much less acting, at age 25 would be absurd. I don't think you're really great at a craft until you're about 50, and I plan to take a lot of hits until then.' I do have some news for you today (for those going through withdrawal). First, Jewel will finally be taping another show that I know many here have wished for: Austin City Limits! This is another GREAT hourlong PBS show that has had a lengendary list of performers over the years. This will be taped in Austin in February & will be broadcast this coming May or June. Jewel will also be taping a brand new program hosted by Candice Bergen called "Oxygen". I put some more details up on the jeweljk.com calendar & I'll soon add the broadcast time, when we know it (This will be shown in Feb). Check the website calendar for more info. Also it's Tuesday(for a little while longer), so that means NEW PHOTOS DAY at jeweljk.com. This week we continue with more of our favorite "never before seen" shots from the Spirit Tour. We focused on band members as well as Jewel this time. There's also a nice one of Jewel's brother Atz Lee joining the band one night (on harp) & one older Java Joe's shot of Steve & Jewel. Other than that, Jewel will have a track on the "Jingle Ball 99" charity CD to be released by STAR FM in San Diego next month & work on her second book continues. Oh yeah....Sending Jewel a FREE CyberKiss for Valentines Day will raise funding for HGH's Clearwater Project! Details to be announced soon! Stay tuned. Be curious. I hope everyone is making some final plans to attend the Tara shows this coming weekend in Austin, TX! I haven't heard from anyone in about a week, so I guess yall are all taking care of your own plans. Should we meet at a certain time/place? Just a suggestion. I plan to get to Austin around 5:00pm on Friday so if anyone else is there then, or before then, maybe we can all meet up somewhere before the first show. Also, does anyone know how much before the show she's been doing her soundchecks lately? Just wondering so maybe we could go check that out too. Here's a copy of the letter I've been sending to these lists now for the past month, it contains the names of those who have stated they want to go, or are going for sure, so if anyone else decides they want to go, let me know and I will add you to the list as well...but there's not alot of time left now. I doubt I'll post a letter on Friday since by then it may be too late anyway. Here's the letter and list...... Here's an updated list of everyone's name whose told me they intend on going to one or more of the Tara MacLean shows in Austin, TX on January 21-23, 2000. If you're interested in going to this and meeting fellow EDA's and Tara fan's, e-mail me and I can add you to the list. The show is FREE all 3 nights, start's at 8:00pm, and is at a coffeehouse called Ruta Maya. I don't think there is a minimum age requirement, since it's not at a bar or club. Most going are between 16 and 30. If you see someone's name from your area and want to go but don't have transportation of your own, you may be able to work out a carpool with them. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Now THAT'S an intriguing subject line, eh?! This goes out to all EDAs & all EDA websitemasters that may be inspired to help with a timely Valentines Day project that will be both fun for EDAs AND help raise more awareness & funding for HGH's Clearwater Project (which the EDAs greatly contributed to recently). Jewel will be among seven celebrities participating in AmericanGreetings.com's "CYBER SMOOCH FOR A CURE". Each celebrity will be representing a non-profit organization that helps fight life threatening or debilitating diseases. Naturally, Jewel chose to represent HGH's Clearwater Project. Here's how it works: Beginning February 1, seven celebrity photos (including Jewel's) will be featured at AmericanGreetings.com's website. Every time a visitor clicks a button to send Jewel a FREE "SmoochMail", AmericanGreetings.com increases the donation to Clearwater Project. Plus, if Jewel receives the most "SmoochMail", Clearwater Project will receive a $25,000 donation from AmericanGreetings.com. So... I encourage everyone to please help with this campaign. There is nothing to purchase & no financial obligation of any kind on your part. Simply go to AmericanGreetings.com between Feb. 1 to Feb. 14, click a button & send Jewel a FREE "SmoochMail" for Valentines Day! Jewel-content website masters can also help greatly by having links & info about this while its running, which will be from Feb. 1 to Feb 14 (Valentines Day). We have some cool FLASH animation & a link to it planned for jeweljk.com, but of course the more fansites joining in too, the merrier. Also feel free to post about this to appropriate message boards, etc. Thanks in advance! With all the EDA polls & various online "voting for Jewel" you always support, this should be a piece of cake, right? ;-) Any EDA with web access can do this for the fun of it. It's a simple click of a button by Jewel's photo to send her a "SmoochMail". By doing this, you will help support HGH's Clearwater Project. Cheers! For those EDAs sending me private emails begging for tickets, please stop. Thanks! Alan Question: I'm thinking about coming to Austin and I'd like to see Austin City Limits. How can I get tickets to a taping? Answer: There are five steps for obtaining Austin City Limits tickets. 1.Please call the KLRU Hotline at (512) 475-9077. 2.Listen carefully to the message and find out the artist, taping date, time and which radio station(s) to listen to for the ticket distribution announcement. 3.Listen closely to that radio station in the morning and afternoons. That radio station(s) will announce what time the tickets will be given away usually within an hour from the announcement. 4.When you hear the announcement, come to KLRU immediately, located in Communication Building "B" at the corner of 26th Street and Guadeloupe on the University of Texas campus, for the ticket distribution. Tickets go *very quickly*, sometimes within five minutes of the announced giveaway time. Tickets are distributed by KLRU staff and are free on a first-come, first-served basis. Two tickets per person are allowed. Unfortunately a ticket does not guarantee admission to the taping. However, KLRU strives to admit every ticket holder for every taping. Fire codes limit our capacity to 400 audience members. In order to be assured of a full house for the taping, KLRU distributes in excess of 400 tickets to account for the "no-show" factor. Our advice is *arrive early* on the night of the taping. List Moderator Note: In case you missed it, a few days ago Mr BB posted this: Jewel will finally be taping another show that I know many here have wished for: Austin City Limits! Other nominees -- who must have been residents of California during 1999 -- include Offspring, 311, Lit, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Master P, Dr. Dre, Sugar Ray, Will Smith, Buckcherry, Korn, Macy Gray, Ledisi, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Cher, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, The Donnas and Tom Waits. Outstanding debut album nominees are The City's Stroke 9, For Stars and Applesaucer, as well as Sacramento's Oleander and L.A.'s Bell Rays. Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind expressed amazement that his band, which spent a good part of the year in the studio and not on the radio or MTV, had received so many nominations -- one for each band member, and for songwriting, outstanding group and outstanding rock/pop album for its well-received second album, "Blue." "Wow, no kidding?" he said when given the news. "I'm as shocked as I was the first time. Sometimes it feels like we (in Third Eye Blind) create in a bubble, and I'm pleased and amazed that people are noticing." Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, an outstanding guitarist nominee, said he was thrilled to hear about Rage's seven nominations. "It's a tremendous honor," he said. "We could have never imagined when we formed this band that we would be getting these acknowledgments. And these awards -- unlike the Grammys -- always seemed to be by and for the people." This year, with the demise of BAM magazine, which for years was the sponsor of the yearly awards, Tower Records has stepped up to take over sponsorship. It'll provide ballots for the final voting -- which is done by fans -- in all its retail stores, as well as online at Towerrecords.com, and in its in-house magazine, Pulse! We took a different path this week & selected photos away from the stage. Those who have the "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" video may recognize a thing or two, as several of the shots were done during filming of that home video. Download them while you can! New ones next Tuesday. Speaking of photos, there's a new limited edition item at the website store. It's an original 8x10 photograph of Jewel taken by extraordinarily talented photographer West Kennerly. Many have written me over the past year asking me if West would consider selling you an original photograph, so here you go! These photographs are also autographed by Jewel & come with a certificate of authenticity. You can view this image at the store. Also, if you purchase any Jewel Mug now, you'll also receive a FREE 8x10 Jewel promo photo by "Spirit" cover photographer Matthew Rolston. JMerch is also giving away copies of the long gone "Bits & Baubles" CD, if you purchase all 5 posters. There's other specials, as well, so have a look at what's new at the store. You can also find BOTH Jewel home videos at the store. We have plenty of the before mentioned "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" and we still have a limited quantity of the video version of "Joy: A Holiday Collection" filmed live with an EDA Audience last year in NYC. The store main page also has two handy resources some of you may enjoy, especially those who prefer not to web order. You can easily request Jmerch mail you a product sheet, so you can mail order. The link is right at the store page. Also if you have Adobe Acrobat, you can download the entire JMerch catalogue in PDF format from the site. And of course you can phone order during business hours (9am to 5pm west coast time) at 877-295-3935. To those who've written asking when the three autographed tourbooks will be awarded, the current contest ends mid February. Everyone still has a few weeks to enter this contest. Just click "contest" on the main page & fill out the form so we can contact you if you win. That easy. Oh & several have asked me about our URL. No, you don't need the "www" in our URL. It still works that way but you can simply go to http://jeweljk.com or simply jeweljk.com with most current browsers. Check the calendar for TV & scheduling updates. (Yes, new stuff is still being added quite often) Lots of rebroadcasts lately (including several Jewel programs EDAs were invited to) & some new things to look forward to. Jewel continues work on her book of prose & short stories. This will be out later this year from Harper-Collins publishing. It's titled "Chasing Down The Dawn: Life Stories By Jewel". I'll keep you updated as this project reaches completion. The J Team is also working on a few BIG new projects, some which will be revealed over the course of this year. So stick around! I'm off to shovel a path through the snow & make actual contact with the outside world. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Here's the accurate info about the "Jewel Smoochmail" campaign that begins on Tuesday. Enjoy! ...And if any SoCal EDAs are going to Java Joe's reopening gigs this weekend, please post or email me & let me know how it went. Alan --------------------------------------------------------- Jewel Smoochmail Information: This goes out to EDAs & EDA websitemasters that may be inspired to help with a timely Valentines Day project that will be both fun for fans AND help raise more awareness & funding for HGH's Clearwater Project (which the EDAs greatly contributed to recently). So... I encourage everyone to help with this campaign. There is nothing to purchase & no financial obligation of any kind on your part. Simply go to AmericanGreetings.com between Feb. 1 to Feb. 14, click a button & send Jewel a FREE "SmoochMail" for Valentines Day! That simple. Jewel-content website masters can also help greatly by having links & info about this while its running, which will be from Feb. 1 to Feb 14 (Valentines Day). We have some cool FLASH animation & a link to this on jeweljk.com, but of course the more fansites joining in, the merrier. For more information about Clearwater Project, please visit: http://www.clearwaterproject.com Send Jewel a "SmoochMail". It's easy! Go to: http://www.AmericanGreetings.com Begins 1st of February! I just read this on the addict.com web site. Josh Clayton, who played electric guitar on Down So Long and Life Uncommon on Jewel's Spirit CD passed away on January 19th. I honestly do not know anything about him, but below is what the addict.com web site had to say about this. Just thought I'd send on the news. Mike ******** Ex–School Of Fish Frontman Dies Guitarist and singer/songwriter Josh Clayton, former frontman for pop-rockers School of Fish, died of cancer Jan. 19, less than a month after he was diagnosed, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday. Clayton was 32. Formerly known as Josh Clayton-Felt, he led School of Fish — best known for the 1991 hit "Three Strange Days" — from their formation, in 1989, until they disbanded, in 1994. He played all the instruments on his 1996 solo debut, Inarticulate Nature Boy, which featured the single "Window." He was dropped from A&M, after the label was acquired by Universal Music Group, and later released two albums on his own Talking Cloud Records: Josh Clayton ... Felt Like Making a Live Record, taken from 1996 performances, and Beautiful Nowhere (1999), which he sold at shows and through his Web site (www.joshclayton.com). A third studio album was completed for A&M but shelved after the merger. Clayton played guitar on singer/songwriter Jewel's 1998 album, Spirit
