"Well I had no choice, had to be there, follow my heart..." (Wendy MaHarry, "California") Peter Yarrow did his soundcheck right about 6:30, announcing he'd just gotten off the plane from Israel. The emcee announced that the duo Women in Docs would be missing the festival, due to a death in the family. Pete & Maura worked up a Women in Docs song, in honor of the absent festival favorites. They did "I Recall," a Chanel song (Roz and Chanel split songwriting and lead vocals in Women in Docs). I first saw Women in Docs at New Bedford Summerfest 2008, my Sweet Holy Grail year, the year of my 500th Nields show, of the Last Strangelings show, of my discovery of Raina Rose during the Mountaintop Weekend, the year of my seeing every Kennedys show in NYC, the Year of Maura Kennedy solo, and of my seeing Women in Docs 16 times in just July and August 2008. Tonight at New Bedford, the Kennedys announced that this was the first show of their having their new CD, "Closer Than You Know." More on that in a bit. Here's what the Kennedys played: I Recall (Women in Docs song) w/ Annalivia Cradle to a Boat Rhyme & Reason I'll Come Over Happy Again Made of Sand Matty Groves w/ Annalivia Heavy on the new songs from "Closer Than You Know." I'd never heard the Kennedys do "I Recall," "Cradle to a Boat," "Rhyme & Reason," "Happy Again," or "Made of Sand" before! "Matty Groves" was great with Annalivia, who added 2 fiddles, a mandolin, and 2 women harmonies to what Pete & Maura were doing. Right after the Kennedys set, I almost ran to the merch tent to be the first person to snap up the new Kennedys CD ""Closer Than You Know." Then I went straight to the Kennedys, where the CD was signed by Pete & Maura, and Maura certified it #1 on the spot. This was the easiest #1 Kennedys CD I'd gotten. 9/4/03 I got the first "Stand" at the Grey Goose in Londonderry NH, and 9/20/09 I had to cross the Hudson River from Boston to get the first Maura Kennedy "Parade of Echoes" at the Turning Point in Piermont NY. "California, well I had no choice, had to be there, follow my heart..."
