This show coincided with the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death. After sets by the Don Piper Band and the Edward Rogers Band (which included Pete Kennedy on guitar), the Maura Kennedy Band concluded, with the Beatles song "A Day in the Life" at the end, as a nod to John Lennon. This was maybe the best "A Day in the Life" I'd ever seen Pete and Maura do, in part because of the added musicians for this finale. For "A Day in the Life" -- Maura Kennedy, lead vocal and guitar; Pete Kennedy, second lead vocal and guitar; Ward White, bass; Tommy Allen, drums; Saul Simon MacWilliams, keyboards; Don Piper and Edward Rogers, vocals; Claudia Chopek, fiddle. I was reminded of the time the Kennedys did "A Day in the Life" at New Bedford Summerfest in July 2008 with Women in Docs, because Women in Docs lent a fiddle to "A Day in the Life" as well, with Savannah Jo Lack on the fiddle. For the rest of last night's show, the Maura Kennedy Band consisted of the following -- Maura Kennedy, lead vocals and guitar; Pete Kennedy, guitar and vocals; Ward White, bass; Tommy Allen, drums; Saul Simon MacWilliams, keyboards, guitar, glockenspiel, and percussion. Saul Simon MacWilliams was impressive in his Maura Kennedy Band debut, subbing for mad scientist keyboard whiz Andy Burton. He also played an unusual 1956 Martin guitar on the songs where Andy had been accustomed to sit on his hands, where no keyboard was required. Maura reprised her dazzling guitar solo on "Chains," and Pete reprised his guitar wizardry throughout, since Pete had been freed up to play guitar with Ward White returning for only the second time playing bass with the Maura Kennedy Band. Tommy Allen has manned the drums for every Maura Kennedy Band show I've seen, and last night he was as terrific as ever. Don Piper's and Edward Rogers' sets were very enjoyable too, with great songs throughout. Fiddler Claudia Chopek, in the dark before I saw her onstage, looked so much like a Maura Kennedy clone, I actually thought it was her, until I saw her under the lights. No Cadence Carroll for this show. I was gratified that the Maura band played a much longer set than they did 11/9/10 at the Living Room, when they played only 6 songs. By comparison -- 11/9/10 Living Room set Thing With Feathers New Way to Live Chains Time Will Steal Your Heart Make It Last Summer Coulda Lasted Forever 12/8/10 Bowery Electric set New Way to Live Thing With Feathers Sun Burns Gold Chains Patience Time Will Steal Your Heart Just the Rain Some Kind of Life October Summer Coulda Lasted Forever Make It Last A Day in the Life (with added musicians as noted) Maura's songs rock, but with her ever-improving rock& roll band, they rock even harder!
