I've seen many Kennedys shows where Pete does a short set of songs from his solo album "Guitarslinger," and I've seen a number of shows where Pete solo split the bill with his fellow Kennedy and wife, performing as Maura solo. Pete literally filled the stage with his impressive array of instruments, set up on their stands, just waiting to be played. Then he filled the living room of Dan & Faith Senie, hosts of the Still River House Concert series, filled it with people, and filled it with music, merriment, and stories relevant to the songs that he was playing. It was, in short, a fantastic way to spend May Day with fellow friends and lovers of music. Dan & Faith did a brief opening set of 2 songs, "Last Walk" and "Sleepy Town," both originals, with Pete Kennedy sitting in on first mandolin and then guitar, on the first song and on the second song, respectively. Then Pete regaled us with a veritable feast, a smorgasbord of his musical talents and extremely eclectic musical tastes, both being second to none, meaning his talent and his eclecticity. He took turns playing on the different instruments thusly -- Guitar -- "You Can't Catch Me" (Chuck Berry), "Alabama Rain," "Nature Boy" (Nat King Cole), "Coal Tattoo" (Billy Ed Wheeler), "Distant Thunder" Rickenbacker -- "The Bells Rang," "Mr Tambourine Man" (Dylan), "Jesu" (JS Bach) Mandolin -- "Angeline Baker" (traditional), "Dallas Rag," "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live" (Blind Alfred Reed), "Maple Leaf Rag" (Scott Joplin), "Rawhide" (Bill Monroe) Bass guitar -- "Pink Panther" (Henry Mancini) Octave guitar ("mando-guitar") -- Medley "How High the Moon," "Lover" (Les Paul) 3rd Guitar -- Medley "Freight Train," "Andy Griffith," "Orange Blossom Special," "Pipeline," "Blackbird," "Bouree," conclusion (break for yummy treats in Dan & Faith's kitchen) Ukelele -- "Minor Swing" (Django Reinhardt), "Rhapsody in Blue" (Gershwin), Medley "Song Sung Blue" (Neil Diamond), excerpt Piano Concerto #21 (Mozart) 4th Guitar -- "Run Red Lights," "Tower of Song" (Leonard Cohen) Banjo -- "The Coo Coo" (learned from Clarence Ashley), "Sago Mine," Medley "Earl's Breakdown," "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" (Earl Scruggs) Electric sitar -- Medley "My Lagan Love," "Norwegian Wood," "Paint It Black," "Little Wing," "Purple Haze," riff from "Sirens," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "I Am the Walrus," riff "I Feel Fine," riff "Pinball Wizard," "Leyenda" (Albeniz), "Nature Boy" reprise Encore -- "When You Wish Upon a Star" (Harline-Washington) You get the idea. That was quite a workout on the frets -- and quite a workout for me too, keeping track of it all! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V11 #9 *********************************
