So P&M played more Kennedys material than usual at a Snacks show, including 3 songs they'd recently played at a Johnny Cash Festival in Warwick NY. Get It Right What's Going On Namaste Easy People Half of Us Make It Last Run Red Lights I Found a Road Jackson (Johnny Cash) Get Rhythm (Johnny Cash) Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) I reminded Pete after the show that Chris & Meredith Thompson do the best version of "Ring of Fire" I've ever heard, and mentioned that I was surprised that the Strangelings never did that one (since C&M were both in the Strangelings in the beginning). I love shows by the Snacks! They're different, intimate, and fun. In previous years, I didn't go (or wasn't able to go), even though Gandalf Murphy and Chris & Meredith Thompson were on the bill. This year, the Wachusett Valley Folk Festival featured the Kennedys, Christina Thompson Lively, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, John Gorka, Trina Hamlin, the Rafters, and MacTalla Mor. Pete and Maura played on "Tanglewood Tree" and "Season of the Witch" in Christina Thompson Lively's set. I want it stressed that Maura does the lead vocal on "Season of the Witch," while Chris sings harmony. I'm always impressed by how these particular artists interact, with style, grace, and electricity flying all over the place. Chris played with the Kennedys in their set too, on "Matty Groves" and "Stand." Life Is Large Half a Million Miles 9th Street Billy Breathe Midnight Ghost * The Bells Rang (Pete solo, w/ Maura harmony) Sun Burns Gold (Maura solo, w/ Pete guitar) * Williamsburg Bridge (Pete solo) Thing With Feathers (Maura solo, w/ Pete guitar) Matty Groves (w/ Chris) Stand (w/ Chris) I'd never heard Pete do either "The Bells Rang" or "Williamsburg Bridge" before. He told me after the show that he'd played "The Bells Rang" once before, at the Christopher Street Coffeehouse, but that this was the first time he'd done "Williamsburg Bridge." I couldn't recall if Pete had ever played guitar with Maura before, on both "Sun Burns Gold" and "The Thing With Feathers." This was a wonderful Kennedys set, ending strong with the powerful "Matty Groves" and their classic "Stand."
