After seeing Cadence Carroll and the Nields at the Living Room Friday night (reviewed elsewhere), I basically missed Raina Rose's entire set at Banjo Jim's, making it for her last song only, and then missed Bernadette when I went back to the Living Room looking for her. It suddenly dawned on me that all was not lost. I could see the Kennedys playing with Richard Barone at Joe's Pub. The Nields show was at 7 -- Raina's set at 8 -- Richard Barone at 10. I could definitely do it. Joe's Pub billed the ex-Bongos frontman's "Glow" CD release show as "elements of past and present work - and choice covers - in a continuous acoustic songscape." This continuous acoustic songscape included various different combinations of musicians Richard Barone (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Celeste (guitar, vocals), Chris Tedesco (violin), Richard Kerris (drums), Candy John Carr (bongos), Steve Addabbo (guitar), Pete Kennedy (bass, vocals), Maura Kennedy (vocals), and Deni Bonet (violin). Did I "Get It Right" -- ? Highlights included a sumptuous 2 violin arrangement featuring Chris Tedesco and Deni Bonet on "Love Is a Wind That Screams"; full-band renditions of the 3 new songs from "Glow" -- "I Fell For Myself," "Radio Silence," and "Glow"; and a rocking full-band encore on a cover of "Starman." Pete and Maura added a lot! I'd seen Pete play in a supporting role before, but seeing Maura as a girl singer in someone else's band was the furthest remove from her work in the Kennedys I'd ever seen her do. There are pix of the show online, on Richard Barone's Facebook page. I was wondering how the Kennedys knew him, and Gordon told me Richard had produced the "Downtown Messiah" the past couple of years, that P&M have taken part in several times. What a fun night of music! And I was glad I finally got to meet Deni Bonet, backstage before the show!
