Sat. 3/29/08 - 120-Minute Folk Festival at Concerts at the Crossing, Titusville NJ. This was a humongous beginning for me, and by 20/20 hindsight also something of an ending, a pivotal moment in time. Chris was my traveling companion to this unprecedented event, featuring the Kennedys, the Strangelings, the Stringbusters, Hungrytown, Christina Thompson Lively, Pete Kennedy solo, and Maura Kennedy solo. This trip was epitomized by the Kennedys song "I Found a Road," and in this sense this was a new beginning for me with TK. This was also my first time seeing both Pete solo and Maura solo, a dual-solo alignment which would dominate the rest of my year, especially in the fall. I'd long dreamed of a folk festival built on and revolving around the Nields, the Kennedys, Gandalf Murphy, and Chris & Meredith Thompson, infallibly, every year. Falcon Ridge comes close, sometimes, and this mini-festival came close too. The 120-Minute Folk Festival was like nothing else I've ever seen, a watershed event, and I hope they do it again. The Kennedys show 6/6/08 at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington was an important turning point for me, one of several that came my way in 2008. Maura Kennedy blew my mind with her new songs, "Chains," "Freefall," "Sun Burns Gold," "Time Will Steal Your Heart," and "Patience," none of which I'd ever heard before. And this was the show where I got Pete's new album Guitarslinger, his first solo CD in years. 6/6/08 turned my fortunes, and my attention, irresistibly toward the Kennedys for the remainder of 2008, and I myself was in "Freefall" from that moment on.
