People continue to come to the Living Room to see them, and more shows like these have been scheduled -- Thursday October 9, Kenny's Castaways, 157 Bleecker St. NYC 7PM -- Maura Kennedy solo Thursday October 30, The Bitter End, 147 Bleecker St. NYC 7PM -- Pre-Halloween featuring Maura Kennedy solo & Pete Kennedy solo These solo Kennedys shows are historic, unique, and wonderful, as well as different from week to week -- 4 good reasons to keep me coming back for more. They're cutting edge Kennedys and they're just plain fun! Last night's show was the 3rd of 4 September residency appearances at the Living Room, with both Pete and Maura doing solo sets. This time, the Kennedys were dressed in fall colors in the more casual, less formal-looking style I'd come to associate with them over the years. The first and second Living Room shows were decidedly different in that regard. I'm reminded of what Chanel Lucas says at nearly every Women in Docs show, as to why they wear Doc Martens at every show -- "It's all about the fashion." :-) First Pete and then Maura fashioned a honey of a set -- Pete -- Beethoven's 5th Symphony Roll Over Beethoven You Can't Catch Me Alabama Rain Nature Boy Rhapsody in Blue When You Wish Upon a Star Pete played the Beethoven on the uke, all of the others on acoustic guitar. This was the first time I'd seen Pete attempt the "Rhapsody in Blue" on guitar, which must've been different, because he normally plays it on the much-smaller uke. "Roll Over Beethoven" was an inspired segue from actual Beethoven to the Chuck Berry-penned "You Can't Catch Me," although I didn't catch who shouted it out from the audience. It was completely impromptu. Both Pete and Maura seem to be gaining in confidence and having more fun every time I see them doing these solo sets. Maura -- Chains Just the Rain Freefall Sun Burns Gold Shadows With the Lonely New Way to Live Make It Last Maura played all songs on electric guitar, and this was her longest solo set to date (7 songs). Last week's 7 songs were actually 6 and a half, because she cut short "Sun Burns Gold" when she broke a string. I can't wait for the October 9 show at Kenny's Castaways, which will be Maura's first-ever solo appearance without Pete (in the modern Kennedys era) to the best of my knowledge, and when she will pretty much have the hour (and the venue for that hour) all to herself. Rocky Roberts was great in a supporting role on lap steel on the songs "Sun Burns Gold" and "Shadows With the Lonely." So I got to see what I had missed at the Natick show, when they did the same thing while I was off at Bethlehem Musikfest seeing Women in Docs. Apparently "Shadows With the Lonely" (which I'd never seen Maura do before) had been originally slated for a Patsy Cline or Patsy Cline-esque project -- I remember that being announced as "in the works" a long time ago. Since the song is so different from Maura's other solo songs, she just hasn't played it very much. But I thought it showed yet another facet of Maura's multi-faceted musical palette, like one of those disco-balls shining light in all directions from its many facets. "Multi-faceted" could be the middle name of The Kennedys -- "The (Multi-faceted) Kennedys." :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V9 #217 **********************************
