The first was a CD of Bob Dylans songs, recorded live by various artists at the Warwick Valley Winery in the Hudson Valley. The second was a collection of songs sung by the velvet-voiced Caroline Doctorow, all written several decades ago by Richard Farina, one of the truly underrated talents of the song-writing world. The third project was the completion of our compilation of various artists cover versions of songs by our friend and long-time mentor, Nanci Griffith. Dylan, of course, is not suffering from a dearth of tribute albums, but each one reveals new facets of his deep catalogue, and the Winery CD has the added electrical charge that accompanies a live recording. Nancis CD is, hopefully, the first of a string of such projects that will establish her as not only an engaging and tireless performer, but also a writer of the first order, following in the tradition of Texas authors and songsters who have traveled the four corners of the world, and still maintained their uniquely Texan viewpoint on the curves and straight-aways of human relationships. Dylan and Nanci both have well-deserved legions of fans, gathered during long decades of touring and recording, but Farina will always remain an enigmatic figure. Every time you think you have him categorized, he disappears around the next bend on his motorcycle. He died on that cycle back in 1966, two days after his first novel was published. In a short but action-packed life, hed also managed to put together two wonderfully eclectic albums with his wife Mimi, finding time between trips to Cuba to check out Castros rebel camp, a sojourn with the IRA in Northern Ireland, and street singing and a bit of small-time smuggling on the streets of Paris, London, and Brooklyn. He lived the life that others read about, and he had more stories to tell when his two wheeled machine left the road. But there is a cache of songs, and Carolines CD will be the first audio retrospective to examine it in detail. Her voice is wondrous, and Farinas lyrics are somehow on the cutting edge of to day in their unflinching, even ruthless, examination of relationships, and their panoramic vision of world music (the term wasnt even invented back then) as a vehicle for bold imagery that can, by turns, sooth or shock, and he always leaves you with more questions than he answers. Farinas songs will be a revelation to those who are more familiar with his former running buddy from Hibbing, MN, but, like Dylans early work, they hold up, and even seem to have gathered strength, as the dark forces they confront have gathered their own. This forthcoming CD, Another Country, by Caroline Doctorow, is not to be missed. And now, we travel down the LIE from the South Fork of this long, long island to our home in New York City. ******************************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for September 2008 Wednesday, Sept 3 - solo residency at The Living Room, NYC: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo. - 7pm sharp The Living Room, 154 Ludlow (between Stanton & Rivington), New York, NY 10002 (solo residency: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo) 212-533-7235 Price: no cover; $5 suggested tip jar, 1 drink minimum, no reservations. 21 & over. http://www.livingroomny.com/ Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7, 10am-6pm Saturday; 11am - 6pm Sunday Colorscape Chenango Arts fest, Chenango County Courthouse Norwich, NY Performers include: The Kennedys, Pete Kennedy solo, Maura Kennedy solo, Professor Louis and the Crowmatix, Brooks Williams, Vance Gilbert, Gandalf Murphy Price: Free Phone: 607-336-3378 http://www.colorscape.org/ Wednesday, Sept 10 - solo residency at The Living Room, NYC: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo. 7pm sharp The Living Room, 154 Ludlow (between Stanton & Rivington), New York, NY 10002 (solo residency: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo) 212-533-7235 Price: no cover; $5 suggested tip jar, 1 drink minimum, no reservations. 21 & over. http://www.livingroomny.com/ Saturday, Sept 13 - 8pm show; 7pm doors Sounding Board, The Congregational Church, South Main Street in West Hartford Center West Hartford, CT Price: $14 members; $16 non-members; $8 twelve and under ,For reservations or more information, contact Brent Hall at reservations@folknotes.org or 203-272-8404. http://www.folknotes.org/ Wednesday, Sept 17 - solo residency at The Living Room, NYC: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo. 7pm sharp The Living Room, 154 Ludlow (between Stanton & Rivington), New York, NY 10002 (solo residency: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo) 212-533-7235 Price: no cover; $5 suggested tip jar, 1 drink minimum, no reservations. 21 & over. http://www.livingroomny.com/ Saturday, Sept 20 - 7:30pm Occasional Concerts: The Plainfield Opera House, Plainfield, VT Price: $12 Call for tickets: 802-454-7334 Sunday, Sept 21 - 11am-5pm 17th annual Harvest Fair and Joe Davies Folk Festival, Middleboro, MA Located at the Soule Homestead Education Center, 46 Soule St, Middleboro, MA 02346 Price: $7; children 6 & under free Phone: 508-947-6744 Wednesday, Sept 24 - solo residency at The Living Room, NYC: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo. 7pm sharp The Living Room, 154 Ludlow (between Stanton & Rivington), New York, NY 10002 (solo residency: Maura Kennedy solo/ Pete Kennedy solo) Phone: 212-533-7235 Price: no cover; $5 suggested tip jar, 1 drink minimum, no reservations. 21 & over. http://www.livingroomny.com/ Sunday, Sept 27 - 8pm show; doors open at 7pm Narrows Center For The Arts, 16 Anawan St, Fall River, MA 02721 The Lonesome Brothers open Price: $15 advance; $17 day of show Phone: 508-324-1926 http://www.ncfta.org/ Please check our website: http://www.KennedysMusic.com, or Musi-cal calendars for changes.
