Any Kennedys show is good, but I particularly like the ones where they have the opportunity to jam with other musicians. This was a classic example. They brought with them two musicians from the Northampton area: Ray Mason and Rocky Roberts. We'd previously seem Ray with his band at the Green River Festival last year, and also playing bass with the Kennedys as The Stringbusters. Rocky is an excellent lap slide player and apparently a quite good singer-songwriter. Ray Mason opened, introduced by Pete. Ray did a set of solo rock oriented songs on a solo 1960's Sears Silvertone electric guitar, interspersed with amusing wry commentary including discussions of amp reverb levels and his campaign to revive the "fade out". "Castanets" "Reverb and a Zipcode" "I'm Not That Kind of Guy" "Cats Don't Wear Watches" "Never Run Out" - a song about having too much stuff. "I Want to Be a Holiday" "When She Walks By" - joined by Maura on vocals and ukelele, Pete on guitar, and Rocky Roberts on lap steel. "I've Got a Good Dentist" "Meet You on the Moon" Ray was immediately followed by the Kennedy's first set: "Life is Large" "Speed of Soul" - In the intro Pete mentioned that most of the songs on "Better Dreams" were written at a song writing workshop in the neighboring town of Wellesley. "I Found a Road" "9th Street Billy" "Midnight Ghost" "Breathe" "Matty Groves" "Shadows With the Lonely" - this is an, unrecorded, song that Maura wrote in December, reminiscent of Patsy Cline. With Rocky on lap steel/ "Rust and Dust" - This was one of Rocky Robert's songs, sung by Rocky, backed by Pete, Maura and Ray on bass. "Stand" - Pete and Maura backed by the others, they also brought up Beth DeSombre and Phil Knudsen to sing accompaniment. 2nd Set: "Wall of Death" - Pete and Maura Mini Maura set: "Chains" - Maura backed by Pete, Rocky & Ray. "Sun Burns Gold" - Maura with a great steel solo by Rocky "Just the Rain" - The song Maura introduced at Falcon Ridge, Maura backed by the rest. Mini Pete set: "Alabama Rain" - Pete solo Medley of "Everything I Know" - Pete solo, a guitar extravaganza medley of everything from Bach to Gershwin to various TV themes to more than I could keep track of. "Not Fade Away" - Pete and Maura with Ray and Rocky Encore "Cynical Girl" (by Marshall Crenshaw) segueing into "Words of Love" - with Ray and Rocky Photos from the concert are at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dan_tappan/sets/72157606517911640/ Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V9 #202 **********************************
