This year was especially memorable. Maura held down the first official slot, as part of a workshop discussing new on-line methods of music promotion (like the one youre reading right now). Sadly, John McCain, who recently announced that, as president, hell finally get around to checking out this Internet thing, was not in attendance. Then we got down to the music, kicking off the weekend with A Day in the Life, with Tracy Grammer, Jim Henry, Joe Crookston, Anthony da Costa and various members of the Strangelings, Gandalf Murphy, and the Falcon Ridge house band joining in for a raucous atonal crescendo of dissonance that, hopefully, had John Lennon smiling down from his eternal Dakota in the sky. The Strangelings were unintentionally prophetic when we evoked Lennon again, with a big choral version of Rain. That was to come back and haunt us... The Snacks set was appropriately chaotic, with kids from the audience supplying new lyrics and air guitar moves, kicking the songs to their own level of energy. A guitar workshop turned into a showcase for Mauras new songs, including Just the Rain, completed just hours beforehand. Everybody on stage jumped into the action, ratcheting the festival once again to the next level. The Strangelings hit the main stage at just the right time, sundown, and as the songs got darker, so did the sky. Season of the Witch kicked off just as the audience was bathed in a delicious blackness. We couldn't see them but we could feel a wave of energy, and see a wave of glo-sticks, as they rose up in a mid-summer tribal dance that would make an ancient Celt feel right at home. The pan-denominational gospel wake-up was amazing as always; to be surrounded by the symphony of voices that make up Eddie From Ohio, with the Nields and Vance Gilbert putting their stamp on the proceedings, was inspiring, and the Strangelings did a quick arrangement of Stephen Fosters Hard Times that will just have to stay in the repertoire. Only a tour de force by Mother Nature could possibly top all of these musical high points, and thats exactly what closed the show, quite literally. The Strangelings were on stage with several other bands for our last performance of the weekend, when the air started to literally crackle with electricity. Distant thunder is a magical sound, but thunder a few feet over your head is truly terrifying, especially when lightning starts striking all around, and you realize a really violent storm cell has stalled directly above you; no buildings, no shelter save a canvas tent, and several thousand people contemplating the next few minutes. When the sky turned pitch black, the wind hit gale force, and golf ball-size hail started raining down, the big circus tents started tearing loose from their moorings, as the storm meteorologists say it was an aerial tornado slowly passed over us. Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt, although the festival site was devastated, and we repente d for having sung Rain and Just the Rain over the weekend. I suppose next year well all be sporting I survived... tee shirts, but in the long run, itll be the music well remember, whenever we remember (all together now) the way we were. ************************************************************************* 2) Tour Calendar for August 2008 Friday, August 1 - 9pm (doors at 8) Acoustic Cafe, 2926 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06605 Phone: 203-335-3655 Tickets: $15.00 http://www.acousticafe.com/ Saturday, August 2 - 8:00pm Center for Arts, 14 Summer Street, Natick, MA 01760 Kennedys' good friend Ray Mason opens.
