I live in southeastern Massachusetts and saw Pete and Maura perform last weekend at the New Bedford Summerfest. (If you haven't heard about the NB Summerfest, you ought to check it out -- a truly wonderful event!) I had seen the Kennedys several times before, mainly at previous Summerfests, and knew that if I followed them from stage to stage I'd have a good time. They opened the festival with a workshop on the main stage and got it off to a great start, injecting their spirit and energy into some exciting jams with Women in Docs (singer-songwriter-harmonizers from Australia) and Gareth Turner (UK accordionist) -- even led the startled musicians through a terrific impromptu Day in the Life. I enjoyed them again through a few smaller workshops, and ended my Summerfest experience at a Meet the Performers set with the Kennedys in a small, cozy room with about 100 other folks. That last one left a glow that has not worn off (I'm not ashamed to say it brought tears running down my cheeks, as it does now as I write about it). Which led to my exploration of their website, and to this list. Their great music never fails to stir my baby-boomer soul, but it's the Kennedys' spirituality that makes me love them. They opened that last set with Namaste, passed the Dharma Cafe along the way, and closed with Stand. Pete's introduction to Gypsy Rose, connecting Dave Carter to Rumi, was a heart-opener. And Maura did the same with This Moment. Plenty of musicians mix warm-and-fuzzy psycho-philosophy into their stage patter, but Pete and Maura are the real deal -- djangos. So I've grown from a Kennedys enjoyer to a total admirer. I'm ready for a serious exploration of all their music (even the ukes, which, knowing Pete and Maura, will contain some unexpected jewels) and I look forward to interesting discussions here on this list. We usually go on vacation the 4th of July weekend, and I was simply "Left Behind" this year. I had my options -- "Let's see, mope -- New Bedford Summerfest - -- mope -- New Bedford Summerfest -- decisions, decisions!" :-) New Bedford's folk fest is so wonderful, so cheap ($15.00 total for Saturday and Sunday for TK, Women in Docs, PJ Wright & Dave Pegg, Pete Morton, Red Molly, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Chris Smither, etc. etc.), and so intimate at several of the stages, I'd love for all Jangle-Poets to know about it, but hate for it to lose its "best-kept-secret" status and get overrun with tourists. :-) > >I had seen the Kennedys several times before, mainly at > >previous Summerfests, and knew that if I followed them from > >stage to stage I'd have a good time. I snapped up a hard-to-find Australian import of theirs on Amazon for 1.99 (since it's the only place they have "Wanderer" on disc), and miraculously it came in a jiffy through the post, since both the sender and myself reside in the Boston area. > >even led the startled musicians through a terrific impromptu > >Day in the Life. > That was really terrific, especially with the added musicians. Maura always speculates about whether ghosts can travel faster than the speed of light, when she introduces "Speed of Soul." That "A Day in the Life" felt like a transcendental post-speed-of-light soul transmigration from where I was sitting! :-) > >I enjoyed them again through a few smaller workshops, and > >ended my Summerfest experience at a Meet the Performers > >set with the Kennedys in a small, cozy room with about 100 > >other folks. TK also have a terrific retro-sounding album called Evolver, so there you have it. Now you're an Evolver yourself! :-) You've already reached a better place, Jeff, and now you can share the excitement of evolving to a place of love, with the rest of us! I'm so happy for you! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Jul 2008 23:21:24 -0400 From: woodelldc@aol.com Subject: [JP] Better Dreams (with a side of WID) I just got my stimulus check the other day and before it was even deposited, I went online and order Stringbusters and Better Dreams, both of which arrived today. My car cd player seems to be "stuck" on "American Wish." Wow! I've yet to play the Stringbusters. ?As for Bruce's comments on WID, my friend Shelley in Australia is a big fan of theirs, and has sent me one of their cds. I love 'em, too.
