We had nothing to do all day but come up with song ideas, and record rough demos on a little dictation cassette recorder. Wed nailed down some good ideas, including a song based on Anthropology 101, Margaret Mead and her crew. That turned out to be Tribe. We wrote one based on the Odyssey, Sirens, that became a concert-closing staple for years, and we were fooling with a quirky little psycho-bubblegum gem called Blackberry Rain when the little old lady next door started banging on our wall. It was late, but we came up with another idea. We needed a really simple, direct anthemic song, the kind of big statement that Marley, Lennon and Bono raised like flags. Something that could be translated and still retain its power, like All You Need is Love, which Lennon wrote for the first worldwide satellite TV broadcast. We came up with the title, One Heart, One Soul, and the verses wrote themselves quickly. In deference to the lady next door, we waited til morning to cut the demo. A few weeks later, we were in a studio control room, listening to Nils Lofgrin warm up on his Stratocaster. He had regaled us with some road stories about the E Street Band and Ringos All-Star contingent, and now he was getting down to business. When the fade-out solo for One Heart... rolled on the big two-inch tape reel, Nils peeled off a solo that had jaws dropping in the control room. Amazing, I said on the talkback mic. You nailed it, first pass. Nils disagreed. No, I've got a better one. We weren't sure about that, but we rolled tape again, and he took it even further up the Mount Olympus of rock solos. We wanted to keep that one, but he played it several more times, until it was dead perfect. Now the tune needed some background vocals, and we were booked at a motel in Austin for a few weeks, so we had Jimmy LaFave and Michael Fracasso come in and harmonize, and Peter Holsapple and Susan Cowsill flew up from New Orleans for a session, but the tune still needed something. When we got back to the East Coast and did a Philly Folk Festival workshop with the Dixie Hummingbirds, we knew what we were missing: real gospel singers! The Dixie Birds didn't get together just to sing on Paul Simons Love Me Like a Rock. Theyd been traveling together on the gospel circuit since the 30s, and they are known to many as the greatest of all gospel quartets. Their lead singer, Ira Tucker, was a character on the level of Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington: a mold-breaker, one of a kind. When he walked into the studio a few weeks later, and they gathered around the mic to sing our song, their sheer presence was overwhelming, before they even opened their mouths! Well, they sang from a deep place of soul, and at the end of the session, Ira handed us a cassette. It was their rehearsal tape of them singing One Heart, One Soul, by themselves, in the style of a 50s gospel quartet. Its one of the most precious things in our tape archive, and when Iras thundering voice finally fell silent last week, we played it again, and we could imagine those big, bloodshot eyes smiling down from his beloved pearly gates, the place hed sung about for so many decades. Iras finally off the road, but were still on it, and maybe hell join Buddy Holly as a Kennedys patron saint. If you havent heard him sing, get Tony Heilbuts book, The Gospel Sound, with its companion CD, and search out some of the Dixie Hummingbirds great recordings, like Go Out to the Programs, Another Day, or Today. No matter what your creed is, youll feel the soul that ran deep in the grooves of those old vinyl records, and youll get a sense of how lucky we felt, just to sing with those guys. Thanks, Ira. ********************************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for July 2008 Saturday July 5 & Sunday, July 6 - 11:00am - 9:00pm New Bedford Summerfest, New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park, New Bedford, MA 02740 Phone: 508-979-1745 Tickets: $10.00 one day pass; $15.00 weekend pass. http://www.newbedfordsummerfest.com/ Tuesday, July 15 - 7:00pm The Living Room, 154 Ludlow, New York, NY The Upstairs Sessions w/Abbie Gardner and Anthony DaCosta Phone: 212-533-7235 http://www.livingroomny.com/ Sunday, July 20 - 2:00pm (1:30 doors) Ringwood Library, 30 Cannici Drive, Ringwood, NJ 07456 Phone: 973-962-6256 Tickets: $10.00 Seating is first come, first served.
