At Longfellows in Portland on Saturday night, P&M dedicated the rarely played "One Heart One Soul" to Dixie Hummingbirds lead singer Ira Tucker, who passed away earlier this week. The Dixie Hummingbirds appeared on the song "One Heart One Soul" with TK and on "Loves Me Like a Rock" with Paul Simon. Pete said that the Dixie Hummingbirds helped influence the Kennedys' style, such as the syncopated "hocket" effect on the two-part P&M vocals on the song "Speed of Soul," to give just one example. I used to request "One Heart One Soul" when TK still played it, since it sums up for me the whole Kennedys ethos as effectively and as powerfully as the song "Stand" has been doing for the past few years. Both "Stand" and "One Heart One Soul" stand for the unity of a common bond amongst people and the victory of love over the forces that hinder love's realization. -- "Stand" -- "It's between the darkness and the light, And the deepest stillness of the night, There's a fire that burns where hearts can find their wings and take to flight." - -- "One Heart, One Soul" -- "Two lovers, two friends, One world, without end, Drawn close to the flame Love will stand against a fire of change." Since "Stand" came out in 12/02, it could be said that it has basically replaced "One Heart One Soul" because they're so similar, hence "One Heart One Soul" has scarcely been played for the past 6 years whereas "Stand" has ruled. I think they're even in the same key. When the time came for "Stand" to close the show, Pete started to play "One Heart, One Soul" instead, again, to the surprised laughter of both Maura and me, before he stopped and then managed to "Get It Right." :-) "One Heart, One Soul" -- two Kennedys, doing two shows in one venue in one day! And I was one happy camper with those two posters! Apparently this was TK's first-ever appearance in Portland, ME -- hard to believe! Longfellows at One Longfellow Square hosted the two Kennedys appearances, a 1PM Snacks show for families with young kids and an 8PM Kennedys show for the grownups. It appears that this was the first Snacks show as the Snacks in the modern Kennedys era since the Snacks CD came out last summer at FRFF, where P&M did two shows billed as the Snacks with members of the Strangelings on the Family Stage. Hence, this Portland appearance was the first-ever Snacks show featuring just Pete and Maura. I'd been wondering if the Snacks CD would once again be made available on account of this Portland show, but apparently TK weren't able to do that on account of many other obligations that have been consuming their time and attention this summer. The Snacks 1PM Life Is Large Half of Us Shaking Hands The Creature Was a Teacher Some Kids (impromptu kiddie circle-running with Pete improvising on uke) Rain Kilikilihune Air Guitar Twist & Shout P&M had a great rapport with the kids in the kiddie mosh pit in front of the stage. Maura ran around in the audience shaking hands with audience members during "Shaking Hands," a little like what David Nields used to do during "Blue Room" at Nields shows, for a zany effect. There was a running gag going prior to the show re: two particular kids' interest in biology, which Pete turned into a couple of memorable zingers, concerning hermit crabs and bloodworms. In the best friends context of the song "Half of Us," Pete remarked that the only animal that doesn't have a best friend is the hermit crab. Pete also fibbed that he had bloodworms in his pocket, but that they were invisible, leading to the conception of a future rock 'n roll outfit, the Invisible Bloodworms. A Kennedys cover band maybe? :-) At another point, Pete announced that he had a yellow belly in karate, "That means I can run really fast." Right after Pete said that, a couple of the kids started doing a wild circle run around the other kids, and Pete improvised something on ukelele until their parents managed to settle them down. :-) During "Some Kids," there is a line, "Some kids don't have (blank) like we do," and this blank was filled in by kids' called-out suggestions from the audience -- including fun, money, toys, scorpions, cute little hermit crabs, crayfish, pets, giraffes, music, dogs, and flowers. It was hard for P&M to get in the words on "Some kids don't have cute little hermit crabs like we do" -- ! :-) The parents got to whoop it up for a while too on "Air Guitar" and "Twist & Shout" at the end of the Snacks' show. Later that evening, TK shed the hilarity and the zaniness, pulling out their Kennedys repertoire for an older audience. I enjoyed getting to see TK from "Both Sides Now." :-) The Kennedys 8PM Life Is Large Speed of Soul I Found a Road One Heart One Soul Half a Million Miles 9th Street Billy Breathe River of Fallen Stars Air Intro Matty Groves Gypsy Rose Midnight Ghost Patience Chains You Can't Catch Me Alabama Rain Jesu Day In & Day Out (after unexpected request from the floor) Bouree Intro 8 Miles High Rhapsody in Blue Stand (with "One Heart One Soul" false start) Wall of Death (encore) As in the case of the Snacks show, Pete came up with some witty zingers during the show. "9th Street Billy" -- "Billy is a cross between Buddha and James Brown -- doing splits instead of the lotus position." "Matty Groves" -- "When you're out bringing the yearlings home, leave a spy." I was a spy in the house of love for both of these shows, loving every minute of it, and Longfellows was a great place to see TK besides -- very intimate, good sight lines, and with a balcony to boot, with a great view of the stage. It'll be an even greater place to see Gandalf Murphy when they rock the house there in November with their 6-piece band!
