Yet I can't recall thunderstorms blasting through Hillsdale ever cancelling Falcon Ridge. the differences, i think, are, most importantly, that clearwater is on a public site, controlled by westchester county parks, and they are very conservative when it comes to both safey (the lightening), and protecting the park lawns (which were underwater in many areas after the storm). (FR does not exactly have lawns). there were also very few dry areas for people to go - the performer hospitality pavillion was opened up, but it was not a very large space. the dance tent could proviude cover - if you wanted to wade thru 6 inches of water. most of the people at clearwater were day trippers, without tents and canopies, and were also a much, much older audience, in general, than FR. john r Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2008 19:24:42 EDT From: Nieldsforever@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] "Day Tripper" - TK 6/22/08 Clearwater In a message dated 6/23/2008 6:36:33 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Rozettj@aol.com writes: > >most of the people at clearwater were day trippers, > >without tents and canopies, and were also a much, > >much older audience, in general, than FR. > Day trippers. As it was, 5 members of the Strangelings (Rebecca & Ken with Eric, and Chris with Cheryl) had sets cancelled. This isn't the first time that they've had to cancel because of heavy rains: I haven't been in a while, but in 2003, the same thing happened. There were ducks swimming on the main stage (which would have been charming if it weren't so unfortunate for the performers who had traveled to play). I have a lot of nostalgia for Clearwater -- it's the festival that catapulted me into the folk world -- and I think that they've done a lot of things right that other festivals don't (the intimate workshops that Bruce mentioned are one such thing). But all things considered, I'm less inclined to travel to NY for a festival that might well get canceled, and there's now plenty of festivals competing for my attention. I have argued before that Solarfest is now what Clearwater was a decade ago: environmentally cutting-edge, affordable, attracting socially-minded performers, etc. Does anyone else feel that folk festivals in general (or at least in the northeast) have had a tough few years of late? ~'becca Who also has stories to tell involving interactions between park rangers and folkies at Clearwater On Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 7:53 PM, wrote: > In a message dated 6/23/2008 7:46:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > Nieldsforever@aol.com writes: > > All I know is that the weather improved remarkably after the > cancellation, > the sun came out > > > as well i know since i had to stay there and help take down the sound > equipment and load it. but the parks department evidently did not want > people > traipsing around the lawns which were under from 6 inches to a foot of > water in > places. a great deal of straw had to be carted in just to let us dismantle > the > rainbow and hudson stages and special tracks had to be set down for the > trucks. > > croton point is not a horse farm. it is a public park. you wondered why > clearwater cancelled and fr does not - well - one is a private horse farm, > the > other is a county park. it also began to rain again about 6. > > john r Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2008 21:25:17 EDT From: Rozettj@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] "Day Tripper" - TK 6/22/08 Clearwater In a message dated 6/23/2008 9:11:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time, je9183754@hotmail.com writes: I can tell you that I was monitoring WINS and WX and we were under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning continuing for the afternoon. Just seeing Pete Seeger at age 89 easily and flawlessly playing banjo and singing, not only at the Rainbow Stage on Sunday but also at the much more intimate Family Stage on Saturday -- well, it just can't be expressed in so many words. He's a national treasure. Reminding me that my first-ever date with the woman I wound up marrying years later was seeing Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie at Milwaukee Summerfest. Even people on these lists who know me very well, including the artists to whom the lists are dedicated, have a hard time visualizing that I'm even married, because Karen is never with me at any of the shows. Stephen and Peter are sort of the smoke in the air from the smoking gun, but the gun stays well-hidden in its holster. :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V9 #183 **********************************
