"Camelot! Camelot! I know it sounds a bit bizarre But in Camelot, Camelot That's how conditions are." - -- "Camelot," Alan Jay Lerner A number of years ago I was thrilled when P&M moved from VA to NY. Silly me! -- I wanted to see TK more often. When a few years after that it became clear that P&M were moving from NY to Northampton, Massachusetts, I was positively gleeful with excitement and anticipation. Yay for TK, Yay for Northampton, and Y4Y!!! I had already been the king of Massachusetts Nields shows for quite some time, since N&K also live and frequently play MA. Now I foresaw the prospect of getting to see TK far more frequently as well. Dude --"Life Is Large" indeed! And I sensed that big things were going to come from TK's Massachusetts experiment. Even N&K were glowing with joy at the Joyful Noise Kennedys-Nields show in Lexington, publicly congratulating themselves on helping to lure P&M to the Pioneer Valley. And big things did come, exciting things, new things, as P&M in the Northampton years explored numerous new directions in a veritable lush growth of hothouse creativity. This "Camelot" period in the environs of the Iron Horse and the Academy of Music produced one of the richest treasure troves in the history of TK, including the Kennedys Songs of the Open Road, the Stringbusters Rhapsody in Uke, the Strangelings Season of the Witch, Meet the Snacks: Rock 'n Roll For Kids, the Kennedys Better Dreams, solo Pete and solo Maura songs on their respective Myspace sites, and now a crystallization of Pete's solo work in Guitarslinger, Pete's first solo album of the modern Kennedys era. In short, TK have been kicking major musical butt, and this all the while maintaining the near-frantic pace of their Endless Tour, workshops, mentoring at Summer Acoustic Music Week in NH, and continuing in their roles as djs for Sirius Satellite Radio. That's a lot of things to have on one's plate. But if anyone can do it, TK can! The Kennedys in MA -- and they all lived happily ever after -- yee-hah! "In short there's simply not A more congenial spot For happy-ever-aftering Than here in Camelot." This post-show reflection though comes in the wake of the discovery that this "Camelot," like the more storied one of another Kennedys clan, is turning out to be ephemeral, and is coming to an end -- glorious, yes, no matter how brief and fleeting -- as P&M apparently plan to move back to NY from Northampton after only a few years up here amongst us pilgrims in Pilgrim Country. The "happy ever after" that I imagined turns out to be the "Happy Ever After Afternoon" (TN) in the turn of the tides -- ! Ulp! Great for TK, and great for NY and points further south, but sad for me, as I ponder the future, think about what all this will mean, and think about everything Kennedys that has come and gone down these past couple of years. As much as I love TK, it's hard for me to have a "Life Is Large" feeling about the prospect of their diminished presence here in the Bay State. :-( "Now the world is smaller But our dreams are larger than they used to be..." TK have brought so much joy and meaning to me -- "Stand" -- "Get It Right" - -- "Life Is Large" -- "Half a Million Miles" -- "Evolver" -- there is no one else quite like them, and they're completely irreplaceable. As we revolve, the Kennedys continue to Evolve to a place of love, as they keep on dreaming "Better Dreams" and try to "get it right." I only hope I too can "get it right" in my own way and continue to stand on my own and "Not Fade Away." "Oh, pilgrim so weary, Oh, pilgrim be strong..." Who knows where the time goes? And what can we do with the time that remains? This is the whole theme of "Camelot." We can remember, and we can keep on dreaming "Better Dreams." "Don't let it be forgot That once there was a spot For one brief shining moment That was known as Camelot."
