Pete played a set of his own in the first half -- Maura played a set of her own in the second half. Ever since April when I saw TK play the University of Hartford, I'd been looking forward to this Club Helsinki show with eager anticipation. P&M did not disappoint -- TK continue to be a thing of wonder to behold. Pete had his solo mojo working -- Maura wowed us with a whole slew of her own new songs -- and together they weaved the two-guitar, two-vocals magnetic enchantment that's so attractive about the Kennedys. Like the Walter Egan song -- "You are a magnet and I am steel -- " It's kept me coming back for more! Much more to follow. Years ago I walked into the Bottom Line in NYC to purchase my ticket to see TN at a later time. This was my Darlene Love moment. Darlene Love was doing a set when I just happened to walk in the Bottom Line at that time. (The ticket booth was in the lobby.) Boy could she sing! This time it was my Maura Kennedy moment. I was checking out Club Helsinki about 6:00 for a 9:00 show. Almost literally the moment I walked through the door, I was unexpectedly blown away by a most amazing sound. It was Maura singing, singing something strange and wonderful. That something strange and wonderful was the new song "Chains." I stuck around long enough to hear Maura run through 7 complete songs, 6 of which I'd never heard before. And all of them were great! Chains Sun Burns Gold Freefall Patience Time Will Steal Your Heart Some Kind of Life Make It Last "Make It Last"? Don't I wish? "Some Kind of Life"? The charmed one I'm living? "Time Will Steal Your Heart"? Maura's new songs will steal your heart. They're great! "Patience" has a timeless, almost a "Lady Jane"-like quality about it. "Freefall"? I thought I was tripping -- sort of another Dicky Chapelle out of the airplane experience! But "Chains" was the one Maura played when I walked in. I'd never heard anything quite like this from the mind of Maura Kennedy before. It's from a different place than most other Kennedys material. It has an eerie "Heart of Darkness," Psycho Killer kind of intensity about it that blew my mind, it was so powerful, just killer. I never wanted this song to end! You know the one that goes, "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right"? Sort of like that. If "Chains" is what it takes to blow my mind, then give me "Chains"! :-) More to come.
