What a great gig; a bucolic setting, the genial and passionate Doctor Joe hosting (and serving some killer cider), and a bunch of kindred spirits celebrating the end of cabin fever. It's a Spring celebration of survivors that probably reaches back to the most remote humanoids, (not that there aren't a few of them still in evidence, as well). We're looking forward to an interesting whirlwind of a festival season this year, a season with lots of variety. We return to the Clearwater Hudson River Revival, as the Kennedys/Strangelings/Stringbusters, etc., setting a pattern that we will repeat at Falcon Ridge and the Philadelphia Folk Festivals. The multi-format weekends will keep things fresh, and sometimes challenging for us, and will provide the audience with new and different material every time we hit the stage. To spice things up even more, we'll be doing lots of solo shots here and there, with Pete unveiling his brand new CD, "Guitarslinger", and Maura continuing her creative roll, with new tunes debuting at almost every show. So there's lots to look forward to, and we haven't even mentioned the jam-heavy New Bedford Festival! The organizers don't even tell us what we'll be doing before we hit the stage, but they always keep us on "the cutting edge of ourselves", as Neil Young once described that space on stage where you venture without a safety net. We're looking forward to all of it, and we're tuning up the ukes and sitars for some exotic and swinging esoterica. Some of the shows, including the big line-up Strangelings appearance, are pretty rare occurrences, so check the details below and plan a road trip! ***************************************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for June 2008 Friday, June 6 - 9:00pm Club Helsinki, 284 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230 Phone: 413-528-3394 Tickets: $ 18.00 http://www.clubhelsinkiweb.com/ Saturday, June 7 - 8:00pm The Night Eagle Cafe, 200 State Street, Binghamton, NY 13901 Phone: 607-217-7334 Tickets: $15.00 http://www.nighteaglecafe.org/ Sunday, June 8 - 2:00pm - 5:00pm Maura's vocal tune-up - 3-hr vocal workshop to be held in Union, NJ contact: kennedylst@aol.com Tickets: $75.00 http://www.kennedysmusic.com/vocalseminar060808.html Wednesday, June 11 - 8:00 Vic's Music Corner, Focus Inn at O'Brien's BBQ, 387 East Gude Drive, Rockville, MD 20850 Phone: 301-275-7459 Tickets: $12 members/$15 general http://www.focusmusic.org/ Thursday, June 12 - 7:30pm Gravity Lounge, on the pedestrian mall, 103 South First Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902 Phone: 434-977-5590 Tickets: $ 10.00 http://www.gravity-lounge.com/ Friday, June 13 - 8:00pm Coffee East, 517 Goldsborough Street, Easton, Md 21601 Phone: 443-786-2750 or order tickets online Tickets: $12.00 http://www.coffeeeastmusic.com/ Sunday, June 15 - Second show just added: matinee show at 2pm, dinner show at 7pm (come at 6pm for dinner) Sleepy Hollow Folk Club, Falls Church, VA Email: nstewart1@cox.net or the.mermaid@cox.net Tickets: $10-$15 http://www.sleepyhollowfolk.com/ Wednesday, June 18 - 7:00PM Madison Square Park, located between 23rd and 26th streets and Fifth and Madison avenues, New York, NY Phone: (212) 538-6667 Admission is FREE! http://www.madisonsquarepark.org/Home/Default.aspx Saturday, June 21 & Sunday, June 22 - 10am til Dusk, both days Clearwater Festival Great Hudson River Revival, Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson, NY The Strangelings and The Kennedys and The Stringbusters (all 3 bands feature Pete & Maura Kennedy) Phone: 845-454-7673 Tickets: Kids under 12 - FREE! Pete Kennedy's new release, "Guitarslinger" is his first solo project since 1992, a gap of sixteen years. Taking a different direction from the jangly 12-string lush harmonies of the Kennedys' acclaimed string of CDs, the new album is a stripped down, mostly acoustic project that focuses on his incendiary solo guitar work. Longtime DC fans will recognize "19 in Vietnam", recast here on a haunting electric sitar, and "Eldorado", a favorite from Pete's band Bound For Glory. The rest of the tunes grew out of his solo tour of the south, earlier this year, with a few tributes tossed in: Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me", Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy", and Pete's arrangement of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". Maura joins in on a raucous version of "Not Fade Away", previously only available to fan club members. There are also two jaw-dropping nods to the great Les Paul, with Pete recreating Les' patented tape speed manipulations, but in real time! In many ways, the album is an homa ge to the heyday of the roots music scene in DC, when guitar giants like Roy Buchanon and Danny Gatton were stalking the local clubs. Guitarslinger? Sure. That's the tradition Pete grew up in, and with this long-awaited solo CD, he shows 'em how it's done. See mercantile, below, for ordering information. ***************************************************************************** 6) Open Road recording gear goes on sale! Pete and Maura are offering the Yamaha 2816 digital recorder that accompanied them on their 2005 cross-country road trip. This is the machine on which they recorded and mixed the songs for the CD, Songs of the Open Road. It comes with a travel bag, documentation, and a software disc for the proprietary Yamaha OS. Its a robust machine that has never crashed, and the entire recording and mixing process takes place in the box, so theres never a software conflict, and no additional software or hardware needed, except a microphone. You just turn it on and go. Its basically a more portable clone of the workstation that Pete and Maura use for all of their studio recording, with the same specs and capabilities. Just listen to the CD for an audition!
