It referred, of course, to a kiss, but in a larger sense, it captured the sense of wonder that permeated the world he saw from his wheelchair. A few weeks back, we crossed Doc's beloved Broadway and headed west to the docks. We were ticketed on a cruise to Bermuda. It sounds like a game show "tell our contestants what theyve won" scenario, but it was, in fact, a real gig. We'd gathered a group of friends to hit the high seas and enjoy a little R&R on the pink sand beaches. Oh yeah, along the way, we played a show on the passage over to the island, and another one on the way back, just for our seafaring pals. The intimacy of the small group and the rhythmic rocking of the waves made for a couple of truly memorable concerts. Well, we crossed the Triangle without disappearing into another dimension, and spent two days forgetting that the long, cold winter ever happened. We traversed the narrow lanes of the island on their intrepid bus system, and hit the beaches. On the voyage back, our band of gypsies relaxed by the pool, reading those novels they'd been meaning to read, and coming up with obscure requests to try and stump us at our next show. We all spent a wild night singing karaoke. Maura served up some tasty Patsy Cline, and Pete rocked the boat with a searing version of "Johnny B. Goode." As a bonus, we got a chance to hear our audience members sing, and heythey were good! The day after the great karaoke massacree, Maura was lounging in her bathing togs in the deserted sauna up on the Lido Deck. After a few minutes, she was joined by another woman, who sat silently for a while, as sauna-mates tend to do. Suddenly the woman spoke up. "You know what this makes me feel like doin'?" "What?" "This makes me feel like singin'!" Maura egged her on; "Well, dont let me stop you." The woman leaned back, closed her eyes, and started singing softly. "Summertime, and the livin' is easy." Gershwin's soul-deep melody poured out like honey. She took her time, and the phrasing was perfect. She took it back to Catfish Row. When she was done, the two women sat silently for a few minutes. Then Maura spoke up. "Okay, I've got one for you." Maura let the ship rock gently a couple of times, and then started. "What a difference a day makes" Her nameless companion answered, "Oh, yes it does." "Twenty four little hours" Maura laid down her own version of the Dinah Washington classic, with her shipmate supplying the amen corner responses. Once again, they sat in silence, and then the woman spoke up. "Music is a great healer." "Yes, it is." They were silent again until, still with her eyes closed, the stranger asked, "Do you singon the outside?" Maura answered, "A little bit, and you?" "A little bit." Maura was certain the woman was a professional singer, but this wasn't Broadway. It was the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, on the first nice day of spring, and in that magic moment, nothing mattered except the generosity of the gift of a soulful song from a stranger, and the joy of returning that gift in kind. Yes, indeed, what a difference a day makes. ********************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for May 2008 Saturday, May 3 - 8:00 pm show (doors open at 7:30) Black River Valley Concert Series, Lewis County Historical Society, 7552 South State Street, Lowville, NY 13367 Phone: (315) 376-8957 Tickets: $13 advance/ $15 at the door http://www.frontiernet.net/~lchs/concertseries2008.html Sunday, May 4, 3:00pm House Concert, 55 Old Forge Lane, Pittsford, NY To order tickets, email: tshulman@rochester.rr.com Tickets: $12.00 Saturday, May 10 - TWO SHOWS!!! 7:00pm and 9:30pm Turning Point, 648 Piermont Ave, Piermont, NY10968 Phone: 845-359-1089 Tickets: $25.00 http://www.turningpointcafe.com Saturday, May 17 9:00pm show, with an ice cream social starting at 8:05. I haven't been lurking, just not often online. The sad and tragic passing of our dear friend Andrea Coller wednesday night inspired me to reconnect with the janglies and the nook. I won't say i came here seeking solace, but the jangle poets have always been the Lothlorien of discussion groups for me, without the snide carping and downright rudeness i have seen on other lists. The Phil Ochs list is like that and you can tell from the tone of her posts how tiring it is for his sister Sonny to have to be part of it, which is sad, but true to phil, whose spiral of self-destruction was calculated to hurt those who loved him most by it's sheer senselessness. What did Galadriel say to frodo? "You bring great evil here, ring-bearer." Thus i come back to pete and maura's list to read all about bruce's latest cyber scathe, including an unfunny and small minded parody of our theme song! I thought it couldn't happen here. I guess i was wrong. Once and i hope it was only once, i heckled TK while they were playing (i was drunk) and conehead had to pull me outside to give me a talking to. Even though that was years ago, i still feel bad about it and am most careful to be semi-sober around them. After all, we adore them. So maybe, bruce, instead of being so overbearingly bruce-like, or not being yourself, neither of which is working, you could practice moderation and be semi-bruce-like. Love to all, - -bern, going to listen to TK now Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V9 #161 **********************************
