From "Beeswing" to "Scorpionsting"! :-( > >Fortune Teller Road > P&M recounted how this song was written during their Ireland trip, when they were opening for Nanci Griffith at the very beginning of the duo. When a venue that they were scheduled to play at was blown up amidst the troubles, they had some time on their hands, and got to travel to Northern Ireland, where they saw the Giant's Causeway, built according to legend by the national folk hero Finn Mac Cool. Now isn't "Finn Mac Cool" a great Kennedys-sounding name? Pete said that many oppressed societies the world over have legends about sleeping heroes, and as a true Irishman he believes along with many others that Finn Mac Cool will return someday. (This has all the makings of a great Kennedys concept album!) But there was more. TK have before made a pun WRT their Sumerian-rocker "Nuah" about a moon-goddess (Nuah's arc = Noah's ark). This time the pun involved James Joyce's _Finnegan's Wake_ (Finnegan's Wake = Finn again 's (gonna) wake). :-) > >Me Myself & I > >Minor Swing > They told how Django Reinhardt overcame having fingers fused in a fire when he was young, subsequently learning to play guitar with just 2 fingers on his fret hand and becoming one of the greatest guitar players ever. But Pete started a sentence about Django like this -- "He never learned to read or write --" Maura instantly chimed in, "You almost started a song there - -- He never ever learned to read or write so well, but he could play a guitar just like ringing a bell!" By this time both P&M were singing "Go! Go Django go!" I thought it was a hilarious moment of Kennedys "spontanuity." :-) > >Namaste > Pete said if everyone addressed one another with the word "Namaste" ("the divine in me honors the divine in you") 99% of the world's troubles would disappear. I've seen TK do their children's material at FRFF before, but never anywhere else. FRFF is also the first place I'd ever seen N&K do their own children's material (excepting the one-off at Columbia Folk Festival in '97), but I've seen many N&K children's shows at other venues too, since then. If I can make this Snacks show, it will be my first Maine Kennedys show since the Summer in December tour when they played Ellsworth in '02, where "Stand" was played during soundcheck. Last year's P&M FRFF children's show is the first one AFAIK where they called themselves The Snacks (and where the CD was released) -- although The Snacks show at FR also featured virtually every member of the Strangelings (P&M, R&K, Chris, Eric) -- almost a Strangelings show with an asterisk! :-) So! The June 28 show could perhaps be considered the first "pure" Snacks show, just P&M, for all you "purists" out there -- and, for such a venture as the Return of the Snacks, could it be so hard to imagine that the currently dormant Snacks CD might, like Finn Mac Cool, return from its slumbers? "Finnegan's Wake" -- Finn again 's (gonna) wake -- ? :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V9 #160 **********************************
