I don't know why the University of Hartford is in fact in West Hartford (it's just over the border) -- maybe it was a prime real estate deal, like the Anaheim Angels or the NY Giants playing in NJ, I dunno. Pete and Maura both looked tanned, hair-bleached, and fit from their recent cruise. Maura had a funny story from the cruise which she related during a song intro. TK played 24 songs, including an encore that had been requested during the break by someone, based on the funny cruise story, a song that P&M had never even rehearsed before, let alone performed. It was simply mah-velous. Pete and Maura each did a 1-song set during the show, as I'd seen them do at the 3/29/07 120-Minute Folk Festival in Titusville NJ, only I'd never before heard the one Pete did. It was great, a Pete original. After the show, Pete told me about 2 other new songs he's just written. Maura's solo song, "Make It Last," was dedicated to me! -- because before the show I had showed P&M my FRFF '07 wristband that I'm still wearing, and when I was picking at it Maura blurted out, "Don't pick at it, you want to make it last!" -- to which I replied, "Make It Last, sounds like a song I know!" :-) I spent just a few minutes writing this after coming home from seeing Chris at Stone Temple Coffeehouse in Quincy just now, the only show *ever* where I could literally walk to and from the show from my house. I was so upset about this "Let's have less bandwidth" discussion, I walked entirely the wrong way home after the show, 6 blocks out of my way, in a daze. I was very, very sad -- "Dazed and Confused." A bright spot was when Chris played the song "Prove It To Ya" with a guest guitarist, a song I still believe to have been written about me. "Prove It To Ya" has only been played 5 times -- 10/20/07 at the Sounding Board, 3 times 3/29/08 at Titusville (once for me only, once for Hungrytown and me, and during sound check, for me), and tonight. But Chris, alas! I fear in this list environment even the right information will always be Too Much Information, even when it's "Finding a Road That Leads To You." Her loss to the Jangle-Poets list I share as well, because it's my loss too. I probably posted "Yay For Yay" to the Nields Nook, although I don't know how to check this, since the Nook doesn't seem to have the list archives the way the Jangle-Poets does. There is a whole fan website set up by Jeff Lamicela of just Nields parodies, although "Yay For Yay" is of course a Kennedys parody and not a Nields parody. I sang "Yay For Yay" for Cadence outside the Acoustic Cafe at the 11/1/02 show, "Helplessly Hoping" for a Cone Head appearance that never came. That was a Cadence and the Kennedys show with Chris & Meredith Thompson opening -- also TK's debut of both "Raindrop" and "Pilgrim." Cadence, apparently, coined "Yay For Yay" as an expression from Rhiannon's original "Yay," and when I'm in a "Yay For Yay" mood, I still use it as an expression of glee in posts to the Nook and the Jangle-Poets, using the Cone Head shorthand -- "Yay for (x), Yay for (related y or x amplification), and Y4Y!" But this isn't about "Yay For Yay," but its evil twin, "Life Is Small." :-) I knew a man, his posts were way too long He posted way off-topic, and he was flagged as wrong Then one day, when he was feeling the blues He was given advice that he sure could use Made him an offer that he couldn't refuse Life is small Keep it to a palatable size Life is small Keep it short so no one rolls their eyes Don't be yourself And don't stand your ground Go with the flow and let them turn you around Life is small I knew a woman, she was loved by all She went to darkest Ethiopia, for two twins who were small She did the best that she could when the list peace was rent Now there's no need to pout, there's no need to vent There're kids enough at the children's tent Life is small Smaller than the best of us Life is small All you need is just a little trust An inner child is in everyone Who just wants to rock out and have some fun Life is small Mad Baggins Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Apr 2008 20:13:19 EDT From: Nieldsforever@aol.com Subject: [JP] "What a Difference a Day Makes" (Kennedys encore) Okay, at West Hartford Maura sang this incredible encore, with Pete comping flawlessly on jazz guitar, with no rehearsal, none, it was completely spontaneous, and it was utterly amazing. The things the Kennedys are capable of doing! :-) First though, the cruise story that Maura told during the first half, that led to this happening "happening." Apparently there was a shore leave at some point during the recent cruise TK were part of, shore leave at Newport RI if I recall correctly. Maura didn't want to go through the wicked long lines which this involved -- so she decided to chill out onboard instead, and spent some time in the gym. There was another woman in the gym, and at some point this other woman said to Maura or just generally said, "I feel like singing," or "Don't it make you feel like singing," something to that effect. Which resulted in her crooning the Gershwin standard "Summertime." You know, Gershwin? -- as in "Rhapsody in Uke"? :-) "Summertime and the livin' is easy..." Well, for whatever reason, not to be outdone, or in the spirit of the cruise, or whatever -- Maura followed that up with a little gym-singing of her own. She started to sing, "What a difference a day makes..." And the other woman chimed in after each phrase, with soulful responses like, "Oh ain't that the truth" -- "You got that honey" -- and the like. Based on this cruise story, someone during the break asked Maura to sing that song. So she did! -- for TK's encore, with Pete graciously (and bravely) helping out. I think Pete said, "Why not?" -- just before they did this encore. Talk about your daring young man on the flying trapeze -- flying in front of an audience without a net! "He flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that daring young man on the flying trapeze." :-) Maura said that this was a hit for Dinah Washington, although I'm not sure who wrote it. "What a difference a day makes Twenty-four little hours Brought the sun and the flowers Where there used to be rain My yesterday was blue, dear Today I'm part of you, dear My lonely nights are through, dear Since you said you were mine What a difference a day makes There's a rainbow before me Skies above can't be stormy Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss It's heaven when you Find romance on your menu What a difference a day makes And the difference is you." Pete and Maura are a natural, I tell you! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Apr 2008 21:32:40 -0400 From: russg24@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] Re: C&M Soundscience show & CD Could I be taken off this email list?
