The music industry is undergoing an exciting paradigm shift. Starting back with printed music, player piano rolls, Edison cylinders, and progressing through 78s, LPs, cassettes, and CDs (whoops, forgot 8-tracks), there has been a continual progression of delivery media, and with each new media, new hardware for consumers to buy so that they can play it. A few years ago, the music industry had the next phase already in the works: "High Density DVDs that play back The Who's Greatest Hits in amazing 5:1 surround sound". Of course, we would all have to buy The Who's Greatest Hits and the rest of our entire record collection again, plus a player to accommodate the astounding new technology. Now we could hear the tambourine behind us. Wow! This was set up to be a massive windfall, since everyone would be forced to re-buy all their old records again, and of course, the same companies manufacture the players. Not only that, but the artist's recording contracts were worded carefully. In small print, they read, "royalties will be paid at the rate of one-half for any new technology". Since even a major artist only makes around two dollars per record sold on a major label, this was a great way to knock that down to a buck, while charging the consumer even more for the amazing new version of "Won't Get Fooled Again". As it turns out, we didn't get fooled again, because this depressing scenario never came to pass, leaving a lot of High Density 5:1 whatevers gathering dust in warehouses. What happened was a groundswell started by a few college students who realized that people who love music just want to have easy access to it, not only their old favorites, but also new, challenging music that they seek out themselves. Well, in an Obama-like surge of unstoppable enthusiasm, it came to pass. What we have now is a lot of music legally available on-line, much of it posted by the artists themselves, without being filtered by marketing gatekeepers. That's a genuine wow. Now, there are some people in indigenous cultures who don't want their picture taken, for fear that the camera will steal their souls. Some of the early New Orleans musicians wouldn't make records for the same reason. With every new paradigm, there have been those who didn't want to let the machine steal their mojo. Fair enough. The music business has ripped off hundreds of artists, but this time there's a direct connection from the songwriter to the audience the song is just a click away. All you have to do is find it. So The Kennedys embrace the paradigm, and celebrate the shift to a new template. We'll be doing lots of new things as we continue to explore this digital candyland, including developing the scope of our on-line music delivery. Two examples: Maura is offering a whole separate stream of solo songs on her MySpace page (http://www.Myspace.com/MauraKennedy), including the original version of her very first recording, "Summer coulda Lasted forever", plus brand new songs, posted as they are written and recorded. Pete's MySpace (http://www.Myspace.com/PeteKennedyguitar) is also a "specialty recording shop" with an exciting bit of new merchandise his first solo CD in fifteen years. The title is "Guitarslinger" and it features his incendiary guitar work, plus a helping of his gritty, rootsy vocals. Why buy Pete and Maura's music, separate or together, on-line? First of all, you can sample any song, and then buy the selections you want, or the whole album. It's your choice. Then there are the extras that don't come with a CD, like the ability to comment to the artist, or to their entire group of fans. When it comes to liner notes, we all know that CDs are limited by the small size of the booklets. On a MySpace blog, the artist can post liner notes as extensive as any boxed set, and in fact Pete is uploading an entire guitar-centric autobiography, "Six Strings, One Life", in conjunction with the release of "Guitarslinger", on his MySpace page. So we leap forward into the new template, without fear that the laptop will steal our souls. On the contrary, the motherboard works in mysterious ways, creating a soul-simulacrum that you can download in the form of new songs, photos, information and midnight musings. It's all about direct contact with you, our listeners, and that's why we play, write and sing. See you in the next paradigm! ***************************************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for April 2008 Friday, April 4 - Pete & Maura Kennedy Present The Stringbusters (ukulele music) at the NY Uke Fest! On the bill are: Buffy Stewart (John's wife) & the John Stewart Band, Jim Dawson, Rosanne Cash, Dave Batti, The Kennedys and others. Our good friend and legendary songwriter JOHN STEWART passed away on Saturday, January 19, after a massive stroke. A tribute memorial show to benefit John Stewart's family will be held on this evening the night he was scheduled to return to The Towne Crier. Possibly one of America's greatest, but often overlooked, singer-songwriters, John Stewart was a member of the Kingston Trio from 1961-67, and author of some of their best material. His 1967 song, "Daydream Believer," was a million seller for the Monkees. In 1980 he had a #5 hit with "Gold," backed by Stevie Nicks. The concurrent album, Bombs Away Dream Babies, was also a smash. His stature rests on much other work, consistent in quality but not always as commercially successful. California Bloodlines, his 1969 album, is ranked among the best rock albums of all time by a Rolling Stone magazine international critics' poll. Stewart's release, "Rough Sketches," has received great response from critics for both its lyrical and thematic excellence, and for its fine musicianship. We will definitely work on tightening up your rhythm guitar chops, and do a refresher on modal soloing, a big favorite from last year. We'll also discuss some techniques peculiar to the Fender Telecaster, an instrument that by it's notoriously "unforgiving" nature draws the best out guitarists, and goes right to the essence of tone, no matter what axe or style you play. In deference to the hopefully nice weather, we'll limit this session to five hours, eleven to four, and knock the tuition cost down to 80 bucks.
