Of course, plans are just what you do while youre waiting for reality to happen, and this drawling Southern tour was not to come off in so simple a fashion. After playing the South Florida Folk Festival (a nice mid-winter gig, that one), we were holed up in a motel near the Miami Airport when Maura got the word that a family member had taken seriously ill in the Northeast. The tour was just kicking off, but there was no doubt in our minds what Maura had to do. A couple of hours after she hung up the phone, she was on the daybreak flight out of Miami. Lets see cell phones, laptops, everything needed to keep in touch, with Pete now traveling alone from motel to motel, searching for free wireless, and calling promoters in advance to let them know that, for now, it was a solo tour. This, of course, involved remembering the set list from his solo days. An interesting identity exercise: re-invent yourself as someone that you already once were. Its harder than you think! In New York, Maura took on the various jobs of nurse, counselor, live-in maid, dog-walker, kid picker-upper, and whatever else was needed, with the most important role simply being there for her family. It was one of those times in life when you do what you gotta do because that is, in fact, what you really want to do: the right thing for a loved one. A friend of ours once said, The happiest people Ive ever known are the ones who spend their time helping others. She aint heavy... Maura was able to rejoin the tour just in time for the Strangelings, all seven of us now, to invade Memphis. The home town of Al Green, Otis Redding, and Sam and Dave might seem an unlikely spot for a trio of mystic psych-folk sistahs, backed by a droning beehive of sitar and fiddle riffs, but of course, it worked. Stuffed with barbecue, we all boarded various modes of transportation for the journey home, except for Pete, who continued wending his way across the South, and Maura, who jetted back to NY to check up on things and offer renewed support. Well, Maura rejoined the tour again just in time for the next string of gigs, and as we make our way back up the coast, were anxious to get back to the land of diners and real Italian food, but hey, whats up with all that snow? ****************************************************** 2) Read about The Kennedys new CD, "Better Dreams" in these recent reviews: All Music Guide's review: http://www.allmusicguide.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:dbfwxzlhld0e NetRhythms review: http://www.netrhythms.co.uk/reviews.html#kennedys Also see "Better Dreams" reviews in the latest issues of: Goldmine magazine (2/29/08) Harp magazine (march issue) Dirty Linen magazine (March issue) "Kindred Spirits" from The Kennedys' new Better Dreams CD was played on NPR's Morning Edition, Tuesday, Feb 26!
