If you're a Scot, disregard this month's log; you already know Did you know that Christmas was outlawed in Scotland until the 1950's? The ban was put into effect back around 1700, due to fear of Papish influence, and a lack of big box retailers. So the Scots came up with a bigger, better blowout; Hogmanay! The very word calls for an exclamation point. How is this ancient feast celebrated? First of all, by kissing everyone in sight at midnight, just as we kiss total strangers in Times Square (we don't, actually, but we've seen it happen). Then the real fun begins, as revelers dress up in the hides of cattle, and run through the streets being beaten with sticks. We can tell you, there's nothing more exhilarating. Then, it's time to roll blazing barrels of tar down the hillsides, after which huge fireballs are swung about by burly, kilted men. All of this activity is tiring, of course, and after a hearty bowl of haggis, it's time to retire to the home to await "first footing". The first person who crosses your threshold after midnight determines your luck for the remainder of the year. The tradition prescribes that if the visitor is a tall male with dark hair, bearing a lump of coal or a hunk of black bread (great with haggis), you will have good luck. This dates back to the days of the Viking invasions, when if the first visitor was a tall, blonde male bearing a sharp sword, your luck was maybe not so good. It all sound like lots of fun, although lacking a giant ball descending on 42^nd Street, or, in our case, a fun First Night concert in our own home town. You might even consider a trip to Scotland for the holiday some year, where these traditions are still observed. Don't forget your fireproof tam'o'shanter. Oh yes, our first footing? It was a medium height female, bearing a very fancy snow shovel. She very kindly cleared our walk, citing shoveling as her form of meditation, sort of like Zen woodchopping. Good luck, indeed, for a couple of momentarily lazy musicians. All the best, and may your first visitor bring you equally good luck. Happy Hogmanay! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) Kennedys new CD "Better Dreams" is released January 22.
