But apparently that was the concept from the very beginning. At the Passim show, Maura told the audience that the original idea for the name of the band was the Changelings -- reflecting the fact that the group would be be free to change over time, as it has actually done. Apparently though, there was another band who already laid claim to that other name, and so the Changelings morphed into -- the Strangelings! :-) Renaissance has a song "Forever Changing" -- The more things change, the more they remain the strange! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 22:20:27 EST From: Nieldsforever@aol.com Subject: [JP] Re: Holiday concert with Sloan Wainwright, The Kennedys, and Greg Greenway On 3/18/2007, _ksbeditor@gmail.com_ (mailto:ksbeditor@gmail.com) wrote: > > I saw Chris sing with Pete and Maura last night at the New Moon Coffeehouse > > up in Haverhill. > And 12/12/07, _amber.farwander@gmail.com_ (mailto:amber.farwander@gmail.com) wrote: > > Special Guest: > > Chris Thompson Lively - vocals, guitar > > > The Kennedys with Chris Thompson: (how many must be present before we > > can call them The Strangelings?? ;) > > Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming > Oh man, I hate when that happens -- I mean, when I miss it cause I'm not there! :-( Bruce trying never to do that since 6/25/05 Lancaster Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 23:38:26 EST From: Nieldsforever@aol.com Subject: [JP] SISTER SHOWS - Strangelings Holiday Shows > > Nuah > > Harvest Moon > > Tanglewood Tree > > ***O Come O Come Emmanuel (3 soprano harmony, SSS) > > Hard Way to Learn (Meredith lead vocal) > > Wildest Sea > > Season of the Witch > > A-Soalin' > > Matty Groves > > ***Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (3 soprano harmony, SSS) > > Didn't It Rain > > Wayfaring Stranger > > Reels > > Scarborough Fair > > White Bird > > ***Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming (3 soprano harmony, SSS) > > The Coo Coo > > > > ***Go Tell It on the Mountain (3 soprano harmony, SSS) (encore) > > > > More details to follow in later posts. > The 4 songs denoted *** were the Strangelings Holiday Songs, that justified the show's billing, "Special Holiday Show." Please excuse a digression into some background. C&M Thompson did a "Special Holiday Show" at the Ivy Chord In Reading MA 12/10/05, in which I heard them do "O Come O Come Emmanuel" and "What Child Is This" in their own arrangement, with 2-part vocal harmony, Chris on guitar, and Meredith on flute as only she can do. In my notebook I only wrote "wow" at "O Come O Come Emmanuel" and "great" at "What Child Is This." I remember telling C&M after the show how distinctive and impressive their arrangements were. How beautiful they were! Of course their 2-part harmonies were beyond description. It's difficult for me even now to realize that the 12/10/05 Ivy Chord show was over a year before the first Strangelings show, 1/12/07 at PACE. Talk about indescribable harmonies! The opening chords of the Strangelings' opening song at PACE, with the Maura, Chris, Meredith 3-part vocal magic on "Nuah," alerted me at once that the Strangelings had a sound like no other. It's also mind-blowing to me that the Strangelings have existed for only these 12 months, for one lone year! It's seemed like a much longer run than that. It was not so very long ago -- say, last year's First Night -- that there was, as yet, no Strangelings at all. I never posted a review of that 12/10/05 Ivy Chord C&M show. For one, this was before the Strangelings! P&M forming that group has opened up the floodgates for C&M, for Rebecca & Ken, and for Eric Lee, exposure-wise. And there was another reason I never posted that review. It was the awkward matter of why I wasn't at N&K's Passim show that night! :-) C&M have many, many arrangements that they've never recorded. One of those arrangements, "O Come O Come Emmanuel," got worked into the Passim Strangelings show the other night, but in a slightly different form -- with Maura (soprano), Chris (soprano), and Meredith (soprano). Chris and I have discovered that we share the same 2 favorite Christmas carols, "O Come O Come Emmanuel" and "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence." :-) I sang both of those 10/27/06 when I went on before Chris at Westford, and I'm doing the second of those 2 this Sunday, weather permitting. :-) As for the "Go Tell It On the Mountain" done by the Strangelings, this was a new arrangement, with the usual words but a brand new melody by Chris. It was like "Go Tell It On the Mountain" meets "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger" - -- soulful, and in a minor key, like "Wake Up, Children" also. This is how it was arranged -- Chorus - SSS (soprano, soprano, soprano) Chris verse 1 Chorus - SSS Chris verse 2 Pete - guitar solo Eric - fiddle solo Chris verse 3 Chorus - SSS I'm sorry to have never heard the C&M holiday arrangements again since the 12/10/05 Ivy Chord show -- and I'll be sorry, too, if I similarly never hear the Strangelings holiday arrangements again either. That's one thing that's kind of sad about the holidays -- for the rest of the year, so many great songs are stashed in the dust bin, like lumps of coal left in your stocking on Christmas Eve that no one really wants.
