It was advertised as a triple bill--Sloan Wainwright Band, The Kennedys, and Greg Greenway--and I was going to say that it was three kinds of awesome, but there were many, many more than three kinds of awesome, and I'm not even going to try to count all the permutations of performers and instruments. It was reminiscent of a festival workshop stage, with joyful silliness in great abundance. The cast: Sloan Wainwright Band: Sloan Wainwright - vocals, piano Cadence Carroll - vocals, guitar, djembe Stephen Murphy - vocals, guitar Doug Wray - bass The Kennedys: Pete Kennedy - drums, guitar, electric sitar, vocals Maura Kennedy - vocals, guitar Pete Kennedy played *drums* for most of the evening, leaving most of the lead guitar work to the fabulous Stephen Murphy. Greg Greenway - vocals, guitar, piano Special Guest: Chris Thompson Lively - vocals, guitar Here's what they played: Ensemble: Run Run Rudolph (Sloan Wainwright on lead vocal "Let's kick it off with a whole lot of noise!" she said, or something to that effect.) Greg Greenway with ensemble: What Must Be Done (gospel-flavored a capella) Greg Greenway solo: Highway 4AM (new) Standing on the Side of Love In the Name of Love (with ensemble) Sloan Wainwright solo: I Believe (accompanied herself on piano) The Kennedys: Breathe (In his intro, Pete tied this into the Solstice theme of the show by comparing the birth-as-death/death-as-birth theme of the song to the death and rebirth of the sun celebrated at the Solstice. This is *such* a beautiful song, and it makes me very happy that they found a way to work it into the set list. It seemed strange to see Pete holding a guitar and not a sitar or ukulele, after going to a couple of Strangelings shows and a Stringbusters show in about a month.) The Kennedys with Chris Thompson: (how many must be present before we can call them The Strangelings?? ;) Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming The Kennedys with Chris Thompson, Greg Greenway, and Doug Wray: Go Tell it on the Mountain (traditional words set to Chris Thompson's rocked-up melody) The Kennedys with Chris Thompson and Doug Wray: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (aka Episcopal hymn #339) Matty Groves (introduction included a really bad pun, by Pete) Ensemble: Stand [intermission] Sloan Wainwright Band: Illuminate 2000 miles Ensemble: Blue Christmas Sloan Wainwright Band, with Greg Greenway on piano, Pete Kennedy on drums: Search the Sky Ensemble: Thank God it's Christmas (yes, the Freddie Mercury/Queen song!) Cadence Caroll, with ensemble: A'soalin' (her fabulous rocked-up version, complete with rockin' guitar solo by Stephen Murphy) Ensemble: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (yes the one from the Phil Spector Christmas album) Greg Greenway, Sloan Wainwright, Maura Kennedy: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Stephen Murphy, with ensemble: Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (in honor of John Lennon on the 27th anniversary of his death) Ensemble: Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You Encore, which was not quite an encore (the performers didn't leave the stage:) Silent Night At least I think that's how it went--if you think *this* is hard to read, you should see my notes! Oh, and speaking of Pete playing drums, everybody's seen the "Gotcha Hoop On" video, right? The one linked from kennedysmusic.com? It's *really* fun to watch!
