For why else, some 40-something-odd years ago, would Divine Providence have seen fit to plant the tender shoot of the young Pete Kennedy in Northern Virginia? Perhaps it was written in the sky that fateful day, "Ye shall be booked by Brindley." And perhaps a similar swirl of predestiny visited Syracuse, NY as well, but I wouldn't know, having only been to a basketball game or two there. In any event, like the salmon swimming upsteam or Spock returning to Vulcan, Pete - along with Maura - is compelled to return at least once a year to his homeland, and reconnect to the land of his birth. And we homeland Kennedys fans are equally compelled to come to the show, gazing into the starry sky for inspiration, and tonight we spotted the scarlet orb over the horizon. Was it Mars rising? We asked the universe for clearer direction. Obligingly, the green arrow lit and we turned left into the parking lot of Jammin' Java. The warm and wonderful set we experienced was familiar like our old friends, but with just enough new wrinkles to make it interesting. The red Ricky ran rapidly this night, but Pete's red sitar was on holiday, replaced with Pete's brown sitar/guitar/autoharp - an instrument that defies description. Both Pete and Maura had beautiful Spanish scroll semi-acoustic guitars, although they never played them both at the same time (you'd think they could share). But the highlight of the evening was the unwrapping of a new gift: "Breathe" - a tune from the fortcoming "Better Dreams" album (which Maura said had just been mixed and would come out early next year). It is a beautiful tune discussing how birth and death and life itself are all in your point of view. She dreams good dreams! If this is any indication, we can look forward to a very good album. - -Jeff Epstein Note: errors and omissons are that of your weary but faithful rappateur THE KENNEDYS at Jammin Java, Vienna, VAOctober 5, 2007 Life is LargeDharma CafeGet It Right9th Street BillyHalf a Million MilesNamasteMe, Myself and IStringbusters instrumental - the Django Reinhardt tune.Season of the Witch (Donovan)Matty GrovesEight Miles HighRhapsody in BlueBreathe - from the new album - terrific!
