Out on the Interstate, the local pumpkin farmers haul their wares to the supermarkets and delis of suburbia down south, and the northbound lanes are interlaced with SUVs, signifying the start of the annual parade of tourists that the locals here call the leaf peepers. A typical leaf-peeping day might start with coffee and a tofu scramble at the Haymarket on Main Street in Northampton. Then, after some used book browsing at the Raven bookshop, its time to weigh options; get on the bike and head out on the rail trail, hike the Mill River path, or burn a little petrol and get out to a more challenging trailhead in the hills. For us, its a time to get away from staring at dancing colors and letters on an electronic screen, and take advantage of these last weeks before the first front blows down across Ontario. After an intense year of finishing up projects, we can, for the first time in months, take a deep breath and look back for a moment at all the hard drive space that weve managed to decorate with words and music. First was The Stringbusters CD, recorded while Pete was home-bound with pneumonia, back in February. Then there was the formation of the Strangelings, and their rapid evolution from a one-off video collaboration with Chris and Meredith Thompson into a full-fledged Celtic-psychedelic-folk-rock band. Right on the heels of the Strangelings CD came Meet the Snacks, a rollicking jam captured on plastic, and then without pausing for breath, we leapt headlong into the completion of Better Dreams, the next-to-be-released Kennedys CD. The new CD will be a thematic effort, based around the notion that dreams are a reservoir of creative energy, driven by auspicious symbols extracted from daily life, cobbled from abstract psychic impulses, and, especially, drawn from some larger well of unconscious knowledge that we all somehow share. Thats why songs derived from dreams can be intensely personal, and yet speak to a broad audience at the same time. Those songs seem to touch people in a deep place, so Better Dreams includes a number of songs that weve smuggled across that subconscious border, and also some songs that ruminate on the process itself, trying to get a clear picture of that ever-morphing muse who whispers to all of us in a thousand different voices while we sleep. There are lots of songs to be drawn from that deep well, and Better Dreams is, in fact, our first CD of all original songs since Get It Right, back in 2001. Of course, the dream muse is still elusive, but we managed to capture her in our net a few times this year. Now, its time to kick back a bit, grab a beverage, put on a pair of faded jeans, and do a little leaf peeping. *************************************************************** 2) Tour Calendar for October 2007 Friday, October 5 - 7:30pm Jammin' Java, 123 Maple Ave E, Vienna, VA 22180 Tickets: $18 Phone: 703-255-1566 http://www.jamminjava.com/ Saturday, Oct 6 - All day fest, Kennedys on at 9:00pm Del Marva Folk Fest, 352 Downs Chapel Road, Clayton, DE Tickets: Prices vary depending on age/student/camping, etc: $10-$50 Phone: 877-Del-Folk http://www.delfolk.org/Festival2007/fest.htm Friday, October 12 - 7:30pm Music for a Change, University of Hartford, Wilde Auditorium, 200 Bloomfield Ave, West Hartford, CT Tickets: $15.00 Purchase tickets at box office and pay no handling fees.
