In late March, it had become crystal clear that TK had been shut out from the festival for the second straight year, and this time P&M were vowing to "lay down low" and not upset the cookie cart by barging in as they had done several times in the past. But apparently Dave Carter and the other transworld spirits who influence events on this earth from wherever they have gone had another friendly card up their sleeve. After Anne Saunders was wowed by the new-look Strangelings at the Acoustic Cafe on 4/7/07, TK (with a little help from their friends) not only aced the festival, they put on a real show of dominance, hosting 4 workshops, doing 2 Family Stage sets, and pulling out a gem for their mainstage set Saturday night. JRR Tolkien in "On Fairy Stories" has coined a word for this reversal of fortune issuing in the sudden joyous turn of the "happy ending" -- "eucatastrophe." If I may borrow an apt phrase from the Nieldish creators of the Happy Ever After Afternoon -- "What Are We For If Not For This?" The mainstage set featured the full monty of the FRFF Strangelings 7 -- Pete & Maura Kennedy on vocals and electric sitars, Chris Thompson on vocals, guitar, and flute, Rebecca Hall on vocals and guitar, Ken Anderson on vocals, bass, and percussion, Cheryl Prashker on drums, and Eric Lee on fiddle. Nuah A-Soalin' intro Matty Groves Johnny Come Down to Hilo Tanglewood Tree Didn't It Rain Season of the Witch Harvest Moon Sirens White Bird There was a very loud contingent of Eric's friends from the Loozer's Lounge right to my left in the front row of the tarps, who contributed very greatly to the excitement. Dave Carter must've been extremely pleased, looking down from wherever he is now. Considering that this was a festival appearance that almost didn't happen, beauty snatched from the fire of indifference, the Strangelings at the FR mainstage doing Donovan, Dave Carter, and Fairport Convention really was a dream come true and the stuff of fairy tale endings. Focusing on Gandalf Murphy and the Strangelings. "Our Roots Are Showing" workshop at Sunday 10AM -- Gandalf Murphy & Dust Poets Joziah sounded like he had just crawled out of an all-night howl of a barrel of monkeys with a hangover. Slambovians are very much nighttime people, hardly early risers. Joe always says he wants to start slow so he doesn't hurt himself. He was *real* low in the voice and slow, this time. But he managed to make it through 6 songs with Gandalf Murphy -- "End of the World," "Nani Wan," "Yodel Song," "Syd," "Desire," and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." GM's roots on display were the Ancestors ("End of the World"), a tour to mainland China ("Nani Wan"), South Philly hillbillies ("Yodel"), early Pink Floyd ("Syd"), the "ghosts" who inspire Joziah ("Desire"), and the Beatles ("Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"). Gospel Wakeup Call at Sunday 11AM -- Strangelings, Rowan Bros. & EFO I don't know about the nighttime habits of either P&M or R&K, but Chris Thompson is a morning person. More than that, Chris is a gospel-styled singer already, as is especially evident on the songs "Hallelujah," "Hand on the Plow," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Changed My Life," "Balm in Gilead," "Lift Up Your Voice and Sing," and "Amazing Grace," all from the CD Chris & Meredith Thompson Live. So who needs caffeine, when the Strangelings have Chris Thompson onboard for the Gospel Wakeup Call at FRFF? Chris was just wailing on "Wake Up Children," which the Strangelings wrote specifically for the Gospel Wakeup Call at the festival. Truth be known, the Gospel Wakeup Call is maybe P&M's favorite part of the festival, each year. And it really shows! When the Rowan Bros. weren't rocking and rolling and when EFO weren't tearing up the stage, the Strangelings were laying down righteous grooves on "Wake Up Children," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Stand," and the Mahalia Jackson song "I'm On My Way" as done on TK's album Songs of the Open Road. The mainstage was close enough to our campsite, the GFP, that I took a little jaunt up the hill during one of the Rowan Bros.' songs. I was all the way up at the GFP when I heard the opening chords of "Stand" ringing out so free, so loud and clear. I was able to make it back to the front row of the tarps by coming right down the center aisle, all the way from the campsite, in time to see Pete, Maura, Rebecca, Ken, and Chris all come to the mikes to sing the middle section -- "Allah Buddha Yahweh Jesus Brahma, people get ready, there's a train that's coming." Simply unforgettable! After an intense Saturday night and 4 straight hours of stuff on Sunday, I was laying back in the shade near the treeline at the workshop stage for a while, resting up for N&K's mainstage set at 5:15. "It Just Takes Two" featured Lowen & Navarro, Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines, the Rowan Bros., and N&K Nields, who played "This Town Is Wrong" and "We'll Plant an Oak." "Six String Summit" was hosted by TK, and also included Jimmy LaFave, Tracy & Jim, Lorin Rowan, the House Band, and two other artists whose names escape me, since like Joe Giacoia some years back, they seem to have been brought in specifically for the guitar workshop and their names were not printed in the festival program. P&M broke out of the six-string mold right away, playing "Holiday For Strings" on ukes from their Stringbusters CD. After that, there was a lot of good music going on, but not a lot of note-taking by me! :-) One guitarist was so amazing that I had to go see who it was. And lo and behold! -- It was Sharkey from Gandalf Murphy, who wasn't even listed as being in the "Six String Summit" at all. I should've known it was him! This was when I got my only chance to talk to drummer Tony Zuzulo and touch base with him about all things Slambovian.
