Originally a fab four, they have transformed themselves over time into a fantastic five, then to a swinging six-piece, and most recently into a magnificent seven with the addition of 18-year-old fiddle phenom Eric Lee for the goings on at FRFF. While the memory of this FRFF Brave New Strangelings septet is still fresh, I thought I'd do an overview of this ever-growing, ever-changing panoply of talent. Meet the Strangelings! Eric Lee on fiddle is the newest Strangeling. At FRFF, so many Strangelings songs benefitted from his deft touch! _www.myspace.com/celticrocker_ (http://www.myspace.com/celticrocker) Eric is also a member of the band The Thungs. _www.myspace.com/thethungs_ (http://www.myspace.com/thethungs) Cheryl Prashker has added expert percussive underpinning to almost every Strangelings song since she climbed onboard. _www.myspace.com/cherylprashker_ (http://www.myspace.com/cherylprashker) Rebecca Hall sings lead vocals on "Matty Groves," "Sculptor's Song," "Hard Way to Learn," and "Man of Poor Fortune," and harmony vocals on almost all the rest. Her other half, Ken Anderson plays bass guitar and percussion. _www.myspace.com/rebeccaandken_ (http://www.myspace.com/rebeccaandken) Chris Thompson sings lead vocals on "Matty Groves," "Tanglewood Tree," "Wildest Sea," "Wayfaring Stranger," and "Wake Up, Children," and harmony vocals elsewhere. She and her twin sister Meredith were half of the original Strangelings quartet. Meredith, the original Strangelings flute player, has since left the group, leaving Chris as the new flute player in the band. _CM Thompson_ (http://cmthompson.com/) Pete and Maura Kennedy are the other half of the original Strangelings foursome, playing electric sitars, glockenspiel, and other instruments, with Maura doing lead vocals on "Season of the Witch," "White Bird," "Matty Groves," "Johnny Come Down to Hilo," "The Coo Coo," "Nuah," "Didn't It Rain," and "Sirens," in addition to other harmony vocals. _www.myspace.com/thekennedysmusic_ (http://www.myspace.com/thekennedysmusic) The Kennedys also do old-time, swing, and ukelele music as the Stringbusters. _www.myspace.com/stringbusters_ (http://www.myspace.com/stringbusters) And Pete and Maura appeared at the Family Stage of this year's FRFF as The Snacks! _www.myspace.com/thesnacksmusic_ (http://www.myspace.com/thesnacksmusic) Together, all of these talented musicians making beautiful music together lend credence to the old adage, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. These Strangelings tarot cards actually exist in the real world as well, and were featured as part of a Strangelings tote bag that was sold in the merch tent at FRFF, with each tote bag incorporating all 6 tarot card Strangelings (Pete, Maura, Chris, Rebecca, Ken, Cheryl). Pete = The Magician Maura = The High Priestess Chris = The Empress Rebecca = The Queen of Pentacles Ken = The Fool Cheryl = The World There was no 7th tarot card for Eric Lee, since he was added too late. As an additional "turn of a friendly card," each of the 6 Strangelings had their own supply at FR of only their own card, to be given out by them to the public, and these cards could only be obtained by people like me by getting them from each individual Strangeling. I was almost certainly the first person at FRFF to get all 6 Strangeling tarot cards in this way, copping a full set of 6 Strangelings, one Strangeling at a time! These appearances constituted the debut of new Strangelings sideman Eric Lee on fiddle. Cheryl Prashker played drums at the Budgie Dome but was not present for the GFP set. It was an indescribable feeling for me at the GFP, sitting literally right at the feet of Pete Kennedy and Rebecca Hall, stage right, while the Strangelings played. GFP 5:00 Season of the Witch Matty Groves Man of Poor Fortune White Bird Budgie Dome 5:45 Johnny Come Down to Hilo Wildest Sea Hard Way to Learn Purple Haze intro Didn't It Rain Season of the Witch I had been saying to Rebecca at R&K's recent No. Attleboro show how much her song "Hard Way to Learn" with the Strangelings cried out for fiddle. And lo and behold! - Then came Eric Lee! Eric rocked on fiddle, even doing a Hendrix imitation during the Budgie Dome "Season of the Witch," playing the fiddle behind his head. Soon Eric, Pete, Maura, and Chris were all playing behind their heads, a lineup of 4 Hendrix wannabes, the usual suspects! :-) Apparently Eric was the one who helped Maura with the videography of the "Nuah Suite" DVD taping at PACE on 1/12/07, which was the very first Strangelings show with TK and C&M. Also, so it seems, Eric played both the GFP and the Budgie Dome sets without any rehearsal. So imagine what a fiddler like Eric could do with the Strangelings, if they actually practiced beforehand!
