I of III - Sierra Grille 7/19/07 Northampton This is the first of three parts dealing with the Strangelings at the Sierra Grille 7/19/07 in Northampton. Part two will focus on the song "Johnny Come Down to Hilo," and part three will consider the three newest Strangelings. Part I of III - Sierra Grille 7/19/07 Northampton This was billed as an open rehearsal, in preparation for the Strangelings' biggest gig yet, next week's Saturday night closing set on the mainstage at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Both "billed" and "open rehearsal" require some qualification, however. It was also billed as a secret gig, but it was really more of a "blue light special." There were a few Strangelings flyers out and about in the vicinity of the Sierra Grille, and there was one day's notice of this gig on at least the Jangle-Poets internet list. So the gig wasn't quite as "secret" as all that, but like a blue light special, one had to savor the special while the blue light was still lit, or miss it altogether. And as specials go, was this one ever special! All of the Strangelings were dressed to the hilt in their full concert attire, so this was clearly very much more than just a rehearsal. The Strangelings have a stunning, even a sexy look, all decked out in black, sort of "The Man in Black" times however many happen to be in the group at the time. I've seen the Strangelings morph and evolve over time from a quartet (Chris and Meredith Thompson, Pete and Maura Kennedy), briefly supplemented by a fifth (when Kathryn Lively enlivened the group for just one song), to a full-fledged fivesome with the replacement of Meredith by two new members (Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson). Last night they added a drummer (Cheryl Prashker) and "Now We Are Six." Perhaps the group's evolution is not yet complete, but let me assure you that the Strangelings continue to morph and "evolve" to a place of love. Knowing her history with both TK and C&M, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Cadence Carroll (of the album "Evolve") join the Strangelings onstage someday. "Drums become her," and the Strangelings proved at the Sierra Grille with the addition of a drummer, they can rock with the best of them. Nuah Wayfaring Stranger Johnny Come Down to Hilo Tanglewood Tree A-Soalin' Matty Groves Sculptor's Song Wildest Sea (completely new arrangement) Season of the Witch Didn't It Rain Sirens Nuah reprise ***Wake Up Children (debut) White Bird The Mountain Scarborough Fair / Canticle Man of Poor Fortune A Bend in the River Hard Way to Learn Harvest Moon (Maura replacing Meredith on a cappella duo with Chris) ***I'm On My Way (Strangelings debut of song on TK's latest album) Stand If this was an open rehearsal, it was a rehearsal for the Strangelings' sets on the mainstage, the Gospel Wakeup Call, and the workshop stages as well. I was simply amazed by the depths of preparation, the professionalism, the power of the Strangelings. Maybe Darth Vader wasn't so far off-base when he said to Luke Skywalker, "If you only knew the *power* of the Dark Side!" The Strangelings are sort of an alter ego of TK -- certainly with additional musicians doing some of their own songs as well -- but a much darker side of TK than many of us have come to know up till now. "Anakin Skywalker, meet Darth Vader!" This is an alter ego that I like very, very much. This alignment allows not only TK but also all of the other Strangelings the chance not only to do their own songs with a much fuller band, but also to do great songs by their friends, with them helping out on vocals and additional instruments, which is maybe the greatest joy of all for a musician. Sort of a dream come true, or the NE folk music scene's answer to the Dream Team. Superhero Soup -- why, they even wear capes! I like the Strangelings so much more than I ever liked Cry Cry Cry, ISTM this inevitable comparison completely fails to do the Strangelings justice. III of III - 3 Newest Strangelings This is the third of three parts dealing with the Strangelings at the Sierra Grille 7/19/07 in Northampton. Part one included a breakdown of the show itself, and part two focused on the song "Johnny Come Down to Hilo." Part III of III - 3 Newest Strangelings Drummer Cheryl Prashker was unveiled Thursday night at the Sierra Grille in NoHo as the newest Strangeling. The other two newest Strangelings had played one previous gig as Strangelings at the Guthrie Center in Great Barrington 5/25/07, namely Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson. Together, the three newest members all helped the Strangelings turn it up a notch, on almost the cusp of their tremendously important upcoming appearance at Falcon Ridge. Every song sounded better with Cheryl Prashker on drums. As a longtime Nields fan, I know well what an important part has been played over the years by Dave Hower on drums, first with the five-piece rock band The Nields, and after 2001 as part of Nerissa & Katryna Nields' backup band, the Crackerjack Band. Cheryl Prashker brought exactly the same combination of professionalism and excitement to the Strangelings that Dave Hower always brought to the Nields. Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson looked and sounded much more confident last night at the Sierra Grille, in only their second appearance with the Strangelings. I've been tremendously excited and thrilled to see what the Strangelings have been able to accomplish with Rebecca and Ken onboard. The Strangelings before and after Rebecca & Ken has been like night and day, by way of a difference. The three-part vocal harmonies of Maura, Chris, and Rebecca are just incredible. And the full-band version of "Stand" last night, with Pete, Maura, Chris, Rebecca, Ken, and Cheryl, was simply the best version of "Stand" I'd ever heard, with all six of them either playing or singing their hearts out, on vocals, guitars, bass, and drums. I hope to be seeing much more of the Strangelings in the coming year -- beginning next week at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival! II of III - Johnny Come Down to Hilo This is the second of three parts dealing with the Strangelings at the Sierra Grille 7/19/07 in Northampton. Part one included a breakdown of the show itself, and part three will consider the three newest Strangelings. Part II of III - Johnny Come Down to Hilo The Strangelings first unveiled their soulful rendition of the traditional sea shantey "Johnny Come Down to Hilo" at the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport on 4/7/07 with Anne Saunders present in the audience. No wonder Anne was impressed! Impressed enough to hire the Strangelings, if not then and there, very soon after, to the closing slot of the mainstage at Falcon Ridge, Saturday night. "Johnny Come Down to Hilo" is like nothing I know of in the whole repertoire of TK, by themselves, with the Strangelings or with anyone else. It doesn't just rock a lot harder, it's a lot more down and dirty. In fact, it's the dirtiest thing I've ever heard P&M do, badass dirty, in the sense that when something is "superbad" it is supergood. The Strangelings totally get down, pull out all the stops, and "Let It All Hang Out" on this really curious song which they picked up somewhere from who only knows where. Here's a version of the words from online, though I don't know if this is how the Strangelings do it. Johnny Come Down to Hilo Never seen the like since I've been born An Arkansas farmer with his sea boots on (Chorus) Johnny come down to Hilo, poor old man Wake her, shake her Wake that gal with the blue dress on Johnny come down to Hilo, poor old man I got a gal across the sea She's a Badian beauty and she says to me Sally's in the garden picking peas The hair on her head hanging down to her knees My wife she died in Tennessee And they sent her jawbone back to me I put that jawbone on the fence And I ain't heard nothing but the jawbone since So hand me down my riding cane I'm off to see Miss Sarah Jane When Maura, Chris, and Rebecca were doing the part of the refrain that goes, "Wake her (wake her) shake her (shake her) wake that gal with the blue dress on" -- it was electrifying, like being zapped by a weird voodoo at some primal New Orleans native ritual, with dancers dancing, drums all drumming, swamp-lights shining eerily in the darkness, spirits coming down to take possession, shivers down the spine with the uncanny irresistibility of the moment. "Johnny Come Down to Hilo" as done by the Strangelings is one spooky boogie! Spooky -- like Screaming Jay Hawkins rising out of his coffin with a real human skull, and wailing, "I Put a Spell on You -- 'cause you're mine!" Shiver me timbers, mate! Pete & Maura are taking part in a "Six String Summit" on the Workshop Stage on Sunday, sandwiched between "It Just Takes Two" workshop with N&K Nields and N&K's Mainstage set. P&M play the Family Stage twice as "The Snacks," Saturday right before Annie Wenz and Sunday right after N&K Nields. P&M are great and well worth seeing in this rare format in which they do a completely different repertoire, some of their most endearing songs! A couple of years ago they did the Family Stage with Cadence, making it an absolute necessity for me to choose them over TN because of the direct conflict. They are *that* good. The Strangelings? Saturday night after Gorka, Gandalf Murphy, Dar, EFO, and Lowen & Navarro. Wow. The Strangelings are also playing the "Beatles Forever" workshop during the Friday dinner break, which despite the annoying inconvenience timewise, is always a delight. N&K are doing that one too, as usual. The Strangelings are also scheduled for 2 Saturday workshops, "Like a Rolling Stone" (Songs of Bob Dylan) and "Just Gimme Some Truth." I hope N&K get to take part in the Dylan workshop; they aren't listed, but they would want to be part of that! And the Strangelings are part of the Sunday morning "Gospel Wakeup Call," along with EFO and the Rowan Brothers. Dude. This is always a prime slot, a hefty slab of meat to sink your teeth into, featuring some of TK's greatest anthems to Love, Peace, and Hope for a Better World -- as well as some of their least-known gospel repertoire songs, upon occasion. This Gospel Wakeup Call will be even more of a treat than usual this year because Chris Thompson is a member of the Strangelings! P&M got C&M Thompson "in" to the Gospel Wakeup Call 2 years ago, and C&M knocked people's socks off with their amazing rendition of "Amazing Grace." That was a festival highlight moment for me personally. I think Chris is an undiscovered diamond in the rough and a master of the gospel genre, so her taking part in this year's Gospel Wakeup Call has me absolutely bubbling over with anticipation. Cheryl Prashker is appearing all over the place, with the Strangelings, with Pat Wictor, and who knows where else besides. I'm just as excited as I can be for the Strangelings at this year's FRFF. Now I could probably only be happier, if Rebecca & Ken and their counterparts really make it up to the GFP on Thursday, before most of the festival mayhem commences! :-) Bruce (in haste!)
