And this "retro folk" duo have played a huge role in the recent evolution of the Strangelings as well, as sort of a foretaste of what we may be seeing the Strangelings do on the mainstage at FRFF this summer. Huge huge huge! :-) But "Life Is Large" for Rebecca & Ken in another way as well. The full name of their performing duo, "Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson," is almost too long for the subject heading of an internet review like this one. If it were Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, one might've solved this problem by way of abbreviation or acronym, such as "Dave & Tracy," "Carter & Grammer," or "D&T." For convenience sake, on an informal basis. But apparently Rebecca & Ken have thought about this very thing, and are thinking of renaming their act altogether with a shorter name, yet to be disclosed, beginning with the release of their upcoming third CD (the first two CD's being "Rebecca Hall Sings" and "Sunday Afternoon"). So until that new, shorter name comes out, I will go on referring to these members of the Strangelings as "Rebecca & Ken" and "R&K," for now. Works for Pete & Maura (P&M) -- ! :-) Here's what Rebecca & Ken played today at the Wilmington Memorial Library -- Come Around Like You Do Rose or the Briar O Lord Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn Every Day Rosemary Lane Thanks Just the Same If I Needed You (Townes Van Zandt) Going North Hungrytown Road Lucille Lucille Rebecca sang dreamy lead vocals and played acoustic guitar while Ken sang harmony vocals, played harmonica, and alternated between playing acoustic guitar and electric bass. They mix traditional ballads with traditional-sounding originals in such a seamless way, it is often hard to tell the difference between the two, as to which is the original and which is "Memorex." :-) I had never heard any of these songs done live by them before (at the Guthrie Center, Rebecca sang "Hard Way to Learn," "Man of Poor Fortune," and "Sculptor's Song," all traditional-sounding originals) in this, my first-ever experience of the Rebecca & Ken "retro folk" duo. Although, as I told them after the show, Nerissa & Katryna Nields have sometimes been known to play "If I Needed You"! :-) It's not clear whether R&K will accompany P&M and C&M into the studio in early June to lay down tracks for the projected Strangelings CD. But it was clear after talking to them after today's show that they are psyched to be playing with the Strangelings at what will be their first-ever exposure to FRFF! :-) If we're really lucky, we just might see R&K with guitars in tow coming up to the GFP at Falcon Ridge on Thursday. I hope so! -- I've got all ten of my hobbit's toes and fingers crossed. Rebecca & Ken are a dream come true, and a really good dream at that. What a day for a daydream! Lucky stars, don't fail me now! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2007 20:42:57 -0400 From: Sheila Turner Subject: [JP] Kennedys radio alert Sunday, June 10th - 11:00am WFUV presents: 10th anniversary of John Platt's Sunday Morning Brunch "Sunday Breakfast Bash", with Judy Collins, Christine Lavin, The Kennedys, Little Toby Walker Joe's Pub, 425 LaFayette St, NYC Price: $200.00 SOLD OUT!
