"Pete and Maura Kennedy Present--The Stringbusters--Rhapsody in UKE" includes 18 tracks of ukelele, running the gamut from Beethoven to Gershwin to Hendrix to Kennedy. I'll type in the track list if anybody rjust can't wait for it to appear on the website. Speaking of shopping opportunities, Pete's six-string Rickenbacker guitar is now for sale. It's somewhat more expensive than the new CD. :) (*) I had to check the dictionary to be sure I had the right homonym. But wouldn't "baited breath" be a funny thing write?? *** Pete and Maura Kennedy played a fine set at the Coffeehouse Off the Square at the Old Ship Church in Hingham, MA, on Saturday night, May 19. Opening were a half-dozen talented open mike performers, who presented three original songs, two covers, and an original poem. The coffeehouse had a guitar mike, but nowhere to plug in an electric guitar, so P&M lent their equipment and assistance to the open mike performers. One of the covered songs was "One Tin Soldier," and Maura said that, as an eight-year-old, she sang that song over and over and over to her entire family on a road trip from Syracuse to Montana(??? somewhere out west, anyway, and it was a long, long trip.) Set list: (songs marked with a * are on "Rhapsody in UKE.") Life is Large Get it Right, sequing directly into What's Goin' On River of Fallen Stars This Moment (by Victoria Williams) 9th Street Billy * Shot in the Dark (Mancini) (played on the ukes :) * My Old Man (they had recently played this for Maura's dad, in honor of his 78th birthday) Midnight Ghost Stand Sirens, sequing directly into Eight Miles High (Pete played the electic sitar on the former, uke on the latter) break Half a Million Miles Dharma Cafe Breathe (this one will be on the next new album. Maura said that it came from a dream, and it's about "following your breath into the next life.") When You're Gone (the old pop song, as in "I'll feel a whole lot better, when...") Namaste' (both P&M played the ukeleles on this one; featured a guest appearance by the MC (Eric ?) playing a sizzling Air Ukelele. Very fun.) Ukelele duet: two tunes (?), one was from the Red Skelton show (??), the other was by Django Reinhardt. ("Minor Swing" by Reinhardt is on the CD--don't know if this is it) Pete ukelele solo: * Tiptoe Through the Tulips * Beethoven's 5th (?) When I Go (by Dave Carter) Anna and the Magic Gown (with a bit of a ballad from Northern Ireland as intro and a very country-and-western flavored instrumental bridge) Encore: Eight Days a Week (Lennon and McCartney, accompanied by the open mike performers.) As always, the Kennedys seemed to be having a wonderful time playing together, and their joy was quite contagious. Respectfully submitted, Amber - -- Tempus fugit, baby boy.
