However you do the math, there's nothing else that adds up to a Strangelings show. And I'm happy to say, every Strangelings show has been different so far. They continue to "Evolve." Nuah Harvest Moon Tanglewood Tree Didn't It Rain Wildest Sea Wayfaring Stranger A Soalin' Matty Groves Air Anna & the Magic Gown Pete solo Sirens Nuah reprise The Mountain w/ Sumerian ending this time Johnny Come Down to Hilo Scarborough Fair/Canticle Season of the Witch The Coo Coo Pete solo White Bird Bend in the River The second set was reordered from the one in Bridgeport, and it didn't conc lude with the Sumerian ending of "The Mountain" like before. During both of Pete's extended solos, the other 3 went out the door behind the stage, i.e. outside into the night air, while Pete played. Pete's second solo was on mando-guitar and incorporated a bit of Beethoven's 5th Symphony that I hadn't heard before. The mysterious 5th Strangeling, also decked out in black much like the others, was in fact Kathryn Lively of the Livelys. She sang some harmony, only on one song, "Didn't It Rain." As she did at the Acoustic Cafe, Maura related how, after a Makor show they did together, TK and Dave Carter once concocted the idea for a composite group, tentatively named Butterfly Conservatory. Dave's untimely death prevented this project from ever getting off the ground -- "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground." At the Dave Carter Tribute at FR '02, Pete played guitar for Tracy on "The Mountain," and Maura, Chris, and Meredith -- all dressed in black -- sang the Sumerian part at the song's conclusion. Now Pete, Maura, Chris, and Meredith -- dressed all in black, just as they were then -- are resurrecting the dream, doing joint Strangelings shows, always featuring two songs by Dave Carter, "Tanglewood Tree" and "The Mountain" -- both of which are on CD's by C&M Thompson. It occurs to me now that there is more to the all-dressed-in-black look to the Strangelings than just a fashion statement, like Johnny Cash, the "Man in Black." It takes me back to the Dave Carter Tribute at FR '02, when Pete played for Tracy on "The Mountain," and Maura, Chris, and Meredith sang the Sumerian ending. The Strangelings, black outfits and all, are helping to keep the music and the spirit of Dave Carter alive! Maura's explanation settled it in my own mind. The Strangelings = TK + C&M + Dave Carter's music and spirit. The "Power of Two" just became the "Power of Three" in my own mind. Truth be told, Dave Carter has really always been the 5th Strangeling. "Nuah" the moon goddess -- under a full moon! Full Moon Strangelings. Maybe Kathryn is #6. > > Pete's second > > solo was on mando-guitar and incorporated a bit of Beethoven's 5th Symphony > > that I hadn't heard before. > That was an inlaid F-style mandolin, from the same ebay seller who made their new inlaid archtop guitars, which Pete had strung as a Ukulele, with 4 nylon uke strings. So "mando-uke" might be a better name. It was a great show.
