The Pilgrims survived, as William Bradford noted in his journal, on a meager diet of lobster. Some people revel in the whole affair, tromping down Main Street in snowshoes, whistling Winter Wonderland. Others hole up in their dens like hibernating bears, reading dusty books of arcane lore, by firelight. The Kennedys? We get in our van and drive South. This year we skidded through Pennsylvania, slippin and slidin through a Pocono blizzard, and turned in the magic direction on Interstate 81, doglegging over to 95 on the dreaded DC Beltway, and finally hitting 85 south, the road to the promised land of Chapel Hill, where Spring actually comes when you think it should. We dumped our bags at the hotel and headed straight for the Mediterranean Deli, a haven for musicians who tour the Southland. Great food, nothing deep-fried, the first tabouli and couscous below the MasonDixon line - its Nirvana for snobbish Northern gastronomes who cant live on waffles and Moon Pie. We were just settling down to our culinary delights when the front door swung open and in strode Peter Rowan. Peters an icon to the lucky ones who know his backstory. Plucked out of the Boston scene by none other than Bill Monroe, he traveled the back roads in a long black Cadillac as a Bluegrass Boy long before the rest of us first heard Foggy Mountain Breakdown on the Beverly Hillbillies. Hes the real deal. Of course, he then went on to front Seatrain, George Martins next band after the Beatles, and then there was Old and In The Way, sessions with Garcia and the Dead; the resume goes on and on. Peters been there, done that, and all sans the inconvenience of becoming a big star. Under the radar is the cool place to glide, and Peters a past master at it. Hes also a great storyteller, so of course we collared him for lunch. We traded Django tales over tabouli and Turkish coffee, and he invited us to his show, with Tony Rice and their great new band. Of course we accepted, and spring was starting to shape up nicely. Tony is, like Peter, a legend among musicians. The greatest bluegrass guitarist, surpassed only by the true godfather, Doc Watson, Tony modernized the sound, bringing the cutting-edge freedom of modal jazz into a tradition-bound genre. He also spawned a legion of imitators, but nobody does it like the original. To hear him live is awesome. Like his mentor, the late Clarence White, he doesnt make any attempt to ingratiate himself to the crowd, but he doesnt dismiss them, either. He just plays music. When I told Peter at lunch the next day that it was like seeing a shaman simply open up a channel, letting the music flow all by itself, he agreed; Yes, yes, thats Tony. Its funny, isnt it, that none of these guys, national treasures, would make it past the first audition for American Idol? Lucky, I guess. We finally had to head North, as all Northerners eventually do, but we were in for one more road-buddy sighting. Deep in the darkest depths of Mordor (the New Jersey Turnpike, that is), an SUV sailed past our pudgy, bovine-gaited Scion. That happens every minute or so on the Turnpike, but this SUV had Susan Werner sleeping in tranquil repose, visible through the smoked glass passenger window. We started beeping madly, like the Canadian geese that used to fly south for the winter, and now spend all year-round in the parking lot of the Admiral Halsey rest stop. Susan and co. responded, and we somehow exchanged signals that resulted in us all stopping at the Maryland House (Youve been there, admit it) for an impromptu luncheon and catch-up over crabcakes. Susans another prodigious, unstoppable talent. She doesnt accept any limitations, and has probably ignored a lot of bad advice over the years, leaving her also comfortably under the mainstream radar, napping the good nap of a true artist as she rolls down the turnpike. By the way, she wasnt driving! We feel really lucky to do what we do, and were bemused when we think back to a time when it was trendy for artists to complain about life on the road. We love it, both the anticipated meetings with our audience at gigs, and the unexpected roadside parleys with our fellow gypsies. Its a good life, and sharing it with you, dear reader, is the best part. ******************************************** 2) Upcoming Guitar Workshop: Creative Guitar Arranging for Singer/Songwriters, Sunday, May 6th, Northampton, MA Well spend the day unlocking some of the secrets of great songwriters like The Beatles, Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, and Roy Orbison.
