I was probably this much or more in suspense about Jam For the Van, when on 6/13/98 at the Hatfield Pavillion, The Nields put on one for the ages, raising $20,000 for a new touring van, along with their friends Jim Infantino, Ben Demerath, Pete Nelson, Andrea Coller, and Amanda Roeder, who also played at the Jam. There was no suspense of this kind whatsoever for TN's Blizzard Show on 12/7/96, except the kind of suspense resulting from a blizzard in general, since the "lights-out," unplugged nature of that most famous of Iron Horse shows was completely unexpected, impromptu, and serendipitous, with Nerissa, Katryna, and the three Daves flying by the seat of their pants, along with their friends June Rich, who also played at the Blizzard Show. It's undoubtedly just me, but I can't dissociate the excitement I feel about this Strangelings show from the buzz and the excitement I recall of the two greatest Nields shows ever. And when several factors contributed this week to *discouraging* me from even going to see the Strangelings on Saturday, I knew that this would be a truly mind-boggling endeavor, raising the stakes even higher, like Bob Seger "Against the Wind" to gale force proportions! I first saw TK at the Bottom Line on 5/9/96, under a very similar dark cloud, another reminder as to how history repeats itself sometimes -- "This Happens Again and Again." This Strangelings show on the eve of Easter already was reminding me of the Good Friday Nields show 4/14/95 on the cusp of my conversion experience to TN - -- and the 4/14/01 Sounding Board show, also on the eve of Easter, that was my conversion experience to TK. There's just something uncanny for me about either TN or TK, in the fateful crack between Good Friday and Easter! There has been talk about a second suite, besides the Nuah Suite, being unveiled at the Strangelings' next shows -- and also the hope that a DVD of The Strangelings Live at PACE will be available at their shows. If that DVD doesn't arrive in time for the Acoustic Cafe, it will surely be available when The Strangelings come to Club Passim in Cambridge on May 2. If I'm in the pre-Resurrection jitters here in the week of Easter, it'll be the May Day Cafe next time for sure! "Against the Wind" to gale force proportions? My dictionary tells me that "gale" comes from the Old Norse *gala* -- "sing," "enchant," "bewitch." "Sing," "enchant," "bewitch" -- ? How appropriate to the Strangelings, with three soprano-Sirens Maura, Chris, and Meredith -- and those mystic chords ringing out from the twin electric sitars of Pete and Maura Kennedy! Someone else and I were discussing what folk-y action we could take to make our disappointment known to the organizers of Falcon Ridge....it seems like P&M will, in all likelihood, be at Falcon Ridge in 2008, but, despite what organizers have been replying to some folks, they have not been official guests since 2005, which will mean a 3-year hiatus. Most performers seem to be invited back every other year (with a few notable exceptions that are invited back every year). After all that Pete and Maura have done for this festival, both officially and as non-official attendees, it seems like they could at least be officially invited every 2 years! So, I have decided to "design" (term used very loosely and trademark infringement involved) shirts and hats on CafePress.com: http://www.cafepress.com/janglepoets I have not marked this stuff up and am not receiving a CENT for these shirts; you only pay CafePress's price for the piece of clothing you want to have printed up. This gives folks quite a bit of options when it comes to both getting something within their price range -- starting at around $9 -- and getting a style/color that they like. It also removes the need to find a printer, take orders, receive payments, mail shirts out, etc. If there are any other products on CafePress that you would like me to add to the shop (they have tons of stuff), just let me know and I'll do so. This is a private shop, meaning it won't show up on a search on CafePress's main page, but feel free to forward this information to anyone who may be interested. For what it's worth, Pete and Maura know of this endeavor, but are otherwise not involved in any way. If anyone else buys a shirt, we should try to get together for a group picture at Falcon Ridge!
