It is hard to see from the pictures-my cell phone camera isn't the greatest. Pete did mention Django Reinhardt was the one who showed him the guitar in a dream. I thought the guitars sounded great on lead and rhythm, a really nice clear amplified acoustic sound with great range. It seemed like the best of both worlds, the range of an acoustic with the full sound of an electric for the solos. There was no name anywhere on the guitar that I could see. The only other guitar he had was a Rickenbacker which he used for "eight miles high". Even though it was set in a municipal park, it had that great 'coffeehouse' feel, right down to the wonderful volunteers and the delicious coffee & goodies. After the show, I approached Chuck Drake, the manager of the facility, and told him about P&M. I tried to relay to him the powerful positive energy that they exude, the wonderful songs, the perfect blend of their voices, and of course Pete's amazing guitar abilities. He thanked me and promised to check them out. Sometime later I followed up with an e-mail with their website link and reminded Chuck about them. Well, I guess it helped that he finally saw one of the brilliant Sounding Board shows that The Kennedys did recently, and discovered that I really wasn't exaggerating! They knocked his socks off. Judging by the response of the sold-out crowd at the show Saturday night, this will be only the first of many visits. http://www.northwestpark.org/ I got a chance to talk with Chuck again Saturday night, and I thanked him for booking them. He was really happy with the show. As with any P&M show, there were numerous highlights. Their version of Victoria William's "This Moment" was luminous, "9th Street Billy" and "River of Fallen Stars" shone, and they even played a new song about the birth/death synchronicity that was beautiful. Their new hand-made (Taiwan) guitars with the in-lade mother of pearl did sound (and look) mighty fine. They even showed off the scrollwork on the backs of the guitars - holy moly! An older gentlemen seated next to me had just recently taken up playing the guitar, and it was funny to hear his "Wow!" "Oh MY!" "Goodness!" exclamations every time Pete did something stunning..... Thanks for yet another magical night, Pete and Maura! Pete said that they got them off of ebay, from this vendor: http://stores.ebay.com/Antoniotsais-Guitar-Mandolin-Arts They paid about $500 each at auction, Pete had done some amount of setup work to them. It's actually a fairly nice sounding guitar, It has a nice wide neck - to my quick measurement it was about 1 7/8". Like any other archtop the tone is somewhat more "hollow" (to my ears) than a flatttop. They weren't plugged in. It looked to me like had a Fishman preamp mounted in the side but my son says that it was a Korean copy of the Fishman. So I'd guess it's a fishman archtop pickup or copy thereof. Maura sez they are some no-name brand and will soon be switched out. I have no qualifications to suggest anything but with those guitars I'd think I want a dual system but Fishman offers this for archtops http://www.fishman.com/products/details.asp?id=4. Anyway, thanks for the link to the archtop pickups. I have an '64 Guild electric archtop, and I might add one of those to get a combination of electric and acoustic sounds.
