1) Tour Diary: Enough of February already...
Heres our strategy for getting through March, when winter seems just a little too long.
First, go to the nearest cafi, order a hot beverage, and sit down in a cozy spot with a notebook, either the digital kind or the old-fashioned paper variety. Comfortable? Okay now, take a look around at the college students, bent over their Macs. You know what theyre doing. Theyre checking out hospices in Nepal, and Kyoto, and Bangkok. Theyre text-messaging their friends hiking in the Ural Mountains. Theyre downloading photos of their freshman-year roommate, the one motorcycling across the Gobi Desert. And yes, theyre buying Eurail passes. In other words, theyre alive! Theyre not sitting in front of the TV, reveling in the warmth of their mukluks. Theyre wishing, and hoping, and planning and dreaming. Okay, if they can wish and hope, so can we.
Make a list. Not a things to do today list, or a shopping list. Make it an endorphin-firing list, a list to make you jump out of bed in the morning, breathing deeply the rarefied air known only to those who have a list. Heres where ours stands:
1) Learn eighteen songs in every style of music that we like, and start a band for each style.
2) Put new strings on all the guitars.
3) Go to the garden shop and buy a bag of bulbs and a brand-new spade.
4) Plan an Italian herb garden.
5) Start doing yoga again.
6) Get some steel wool and polish the bikes.
7) Throw out a bunch of stuff.
8) Alphabetize those errant CDs.
9) Plan a cross-country train trip, reading a good book in the sleeper car.
10) Plan a trip along Route 66, photographing old motels.
The great thing is, once you've made the list, you cut yourself total slack. You dont have to do anything on the list. Just making it is a positive, proactive antidote to cabin fever, and if you gain nothing else, youve had a darn good hot beverage! So get to work, and well see you in the spring
