I was having issues with my car needing a jump for a dead battery besides, with me in the back of the church lobby trying to monitor the Nields and the Kennedys and watch for the tow truck to show up, at the same time. Without the benefit of a tape recording (which is always the surefire cure-all for a shaky memory), here is what I think Pete & Maura contributed as this year's version of the HaHaHa arrangement of "The Times They Are A-Changing." It was much like this at any rate, and it was a doozy! "Come senators, congressmen, Get off your butts! You can fire the President If you just have the guts! For it's clear that George W Bush is just nuts! There's a war in Iraq That is ragin' -- But for God's sake, Remember to impeach Cheney first! For the times, they are a-changin' !" Brought the house down, as only the razor-sharp P&M can do! Now if only the Congress could do as they said, and blow the man down, bringing down the house of cards holding up the House That Bush Built! This debut of the Strangelings! was the culmination of years of accumulating good vibes, a "Gathering of the Vibes." For instance -- Good Vibe One -- Both C&M and TK have recorded Dave Carter songs. C&M have recorded "Tanglewood Tree" (on Clearwater) and "The Mountain" (on Live). TK have recorded "When I Go" (on Stand), and both "Gypsy Rose" and "Happytown" (on Songs of the Open Road). Good Vibe Two -- TK and C&M have collaborated at shows before in the past, most notably in memory at the Acoustic Cafe, at Avon Baptist Church, at Lancaster MA (more on this later), and at FRFF. Good Vibe Three -- Both duos (like N&K Nields) strike me as "Pete Seeger liberals," folk musicians with deep and abiding roots in community, in family, in justice-related politics, and in spirituality in search of a more caring and peaceful world. The Dave Carter connection has been determinative for me personally. I remember thinking years ago, "Anyone who plays both "When I Go" and "Happytown" at shows is "All Right With Me."" And then I began to notice that another folk group was doing both "Tanglewood Tree" and "The Mountain" at shows. Way to warm the cockles o' me mussels! I'm still waiting for the Dave Carter Tribute Album, and I hope both TK and C&M will be part of it. It was made explicit during the PACE show that Dave Carter was maybe the biggest influence leading to the sort of collaboration that the Strangelings! represents. Dave & Tracy played shows with P&M, and apparently Dave made it known that he would've loved to have been an "honorary Kennedy," or otherwise tour with TK in some musical configuration or other, just for the love of it. I think many of us would've loved to have seen that. I saw Dave & Tracy with Cone at Appel Farm on June 1, '02, the same weekend as TK at the Bridgeton Fountain and at The Point in Bryn Mawr, a truly stacked Cone Head Weekend, in the wild days of road trip weekends of Nields, Kennedys, and cheap gas (still about 1.00/gallon at some stations). I heard a show boot of Dave & Tracy with TK in which both duos were falling all over themselves, praising the other. This taped show and this Appel Farm appearance completely turned me on to Dave Carter, and it was "When I Go," "Tanglewood Tree," and "Drum Hat Buddha" that completely dominated my car CD player during our family's Colorado vacation in the last weekend of June '02, driving through some of the greatest scenery in America listening to Dave Carter, nonstop. FRFF '02 was circled on my calendar as the FR of Dave Carter, as were Dave & Tracy dates in Larchmont, Londonderry, and Newton. That were not to be! FRFF '02 was indeed the FR of Dave Carter, but not in the way I had expected. Dave died on July 19, and July 27 was the Dave Carter Tribute at FR. I cried all the way to Hillsdale from Boston during the drive to the festival. Performers at the Dave Carter Tribute included N&K, C&M, TK, EFO, Erin McKeown, Mark Erelli, Kris Delmhorst, Christopher Williams, Chris Smither, and Tracy herself. Pete Kennedy accompanied Tracy on guitar in the opening song of the tribute, "The Mountain," with C&M and Maura singing vocals on the Sumerian ending. This is one of the indelible memories for me of the Kennedys-Thompsons-Dave Carter connection, a spiritual connection as well as a musical one. This is how I understand the spirit underlying the birth of the collaboration of C&M with P&M as the Strangelings! It's the spirit of making great music with friends who share some of the same experiences and love the same music. >The Strangelings! -- After the sets by C&M and TK, all of the performers came out dressed in black, like the "Man in Black" Johnny Cash -- only one "he" and three "shes." The group effect was really cool. Pete & Maura especially really know how to dress for effect! Too bad they didn't *play* Johnny Cash too! ;-) But maybe there will be more chances in the future for that. >Nuah Suite, incorporating >Nuah >Harvest Moon >Tanglewood Tree >Didn't It Rain >Wildest Sea >Wayfaring Stranger >A-Soalin' >Matty Groves >Anna & Magic Gown >Sirens >Nuah Reprise The Nuah Suite was Pete's idea, only a few days before the show. Each of the songs in the Strangelings! set flowed seamlessly into the next, song to song to song, without a break. This was facilitated by extremely clever intros and intersong bridges, crafted especially by Pete mostly, but with some additional bridging by Meredith on flute. Some of these musical connections had to change key to set off the tonality of the next song. It was very, very impressive. Pete & Maura played the whole Strangelings! set on twin electric sitars, the first time I've ever seen this configuration. Chris & Meredith both sang, with Chris on guitar and Meredith on drums and flute. Both the opening "Nuah" and its reprise featured 3-part women's harmonies and some flute from Meredith. It was just too cool! >Strangelings! encore -- > >Bend in the River C&M first played this at Lancaster in June '05, opening for TK, as a surprise treat for P&M. It was a surprise treat for me too, the eye-opener that changed the whole way I viewed Chris & Meredith Thompson. On this version of "A Bend in the River" at PACE, Maura sang the lead vocal on the verses, with all 4 performers, Chris, Meredith, Pete, and Maura, singing in harmony on the refrains. It was like a revival meeting -- three sopranos and a bass -- "seeking redemption, searching for grace." What an unforgettable performance. I thought the Strangelings! was the best C&M show I've ever seen, and the best Kennedys show I'd ever seen. I hope they can do it again sometime! It just doesn't get much better than that.
