But I did record them on the WXPN World Cafe Live show last Sunday night. Want a copy? If so, send me your address. I fit it on one CD. This was the first time this annual December musical extravaganza has come to the Boston area. Several years ago I saw the FR "Summer in December" holiday shows featuring Nerissa & Katryna Nields, the Kennedys, and Susan Werner, and let me assure everyone that Sloan's Kennedized Circus of Dreams behemoth is every bit as wonderful as those Nields-TK-Werner holiday shows were, a real juggernaut! This particular Circle of Friends Coffeehouse 12/9/06 Sloan & Friends installment at the Universalist Meetinghouse in Franklin MA featured the following performers: Sloan Wainwright Band, featuring Sloan Wainwright on vocals and piano, Stephen Murphy on electric guitar, Doug Wray on bass, Cadence Carroll on vocals and acoustic guitar Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, featuring Joziah Longo on vocals and (brand new) acoustic guitar, Sharkey McEwen on vocals, electric guitar, and mandolin, Tink Lloyd on vocals, accordian, and flute, Tony Zuzulo on drums, Chen Longo on bass The Kennedys, featuring Maura Kennedy on vocals, acoustic guitar, and ukelele, Pete Kennedy on vocals, ukelele, keyboards, and all manner of guitars The three biggest surprises for me -- and there were many, many pleasant surprises throughout the evening -- were the following -- It was a DVD release party for Gandalf Murphy, whose Flapjacks From the Sky DVD is hot off the presses! I snapped up that sucker faster than Dave Carter doing Highway 80 in a New York minute, making me ascertainably the first kid on my block to get one! And I had a really great chat with Chen while he was manning the merch table before the show, in the "Hush Before the Rush." (I knew the merch table would be mobbed at the break and after the show.) There were actually multiple merch tables set up, a veritable mall, for CDs and other stuff by Sloan, TK, and the Slambovians, including the brand new Slambovian Coffee! Cadence Carroll was featured lead vocalist on one song, "A Soalin'," backed by Sloan's band, TK, Tony, and Tink. And Pete was a major surprise on keyboard! It doesn't do him justice to say that he was unexpectedly competent, not only on accompaniments but on full-fledged keyboard solos, jamming with the others. He was downright excellent! If there were to be a fourth biggest surprise for me, it would have to be the amazing and totally ripping guitar solos by Sloan sideman Steve Murphy! Not even one of the "Murphs"! I can only imagine the delight of the "We Three Guitarists," featuring Stephen Murphy, Pete Kennedy, and Sharkey, since they did not play that trio instrumental this time around. But after the show I got the Sloan & Friends CD which they put out in '04, which has "We Three Guitarists" on it, along with a lot of the songs Sloan, TK, and GM did play last night. Boy was I late in coming around to this CD, but better late than never! Two whole years passing my notice altogether?!? "What was he thinking?!?" :-) Here's what was played last night -- The Kennedys: This Moment Common Bond How Beautiful Are the Feet Galveston O Holy Night w/ Sloan & Doug New York's a Lonely Town Ukelele Duo Stand w/ Sloan's Band, Joziah, Sharkey, & Tony Sloan Wainwright Band w/ Tony on drums & Pete on keyboard: Illuminate Run Run Rudolph w/ Maura (guitar solo Steve, keyboard solo Pete) Blue Christmas w/ Maura (guitar solo Steve, keyboard solo Pete) 2000 Miles I Believe (Sloan solo on vocals & piano w/ Cadence) Thank God It's Christmas (Sloan Band, TK, Joziah, Sharkey, Tony) Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams: Never Fit (break) GM&TSCOD (continued): Slambovia (Carol of the Bells version) Silver Bells The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) Suddenly It's Christmas Gloria Cadence Carroll: A Soalin' w/ Sloan's Band, TK, Tony, & Tink Tutti (Whole Ensemble): Happy Christmas (War is Over) White Christmas (guitar solos by Pete & Steve) Christmas Is a Time to Say I Love You (guitar solo Steve, keyboard solo Pete) Silent Night (Sloan v.1, Cadence v.2, Joziah v.3, guitar solos by Steve & Sharkey) What an amazing, unforgettable production. All of the arrangements were tight and thoroughly professional. Sloan & Friends have definitely got a party going on, a moveable feast, and in addition to that they have got the spirit of Christmas totally down pat. It grieves me that I won't get to take in all of the Sloan & Friends shows this year, as I was able to do with the Nields-TK-Werner "Summer in December" shows in 2002. I feel like now that I've seen the light, I've been expelled from paradise and prevented from re-entry by an angel brandishing a flaming sword. (sigh) Once having seen the light, one wants to live in the light always.
